Benchmark Tests on Legend 2.1 vs 2.2 - Legend General

Hi All,
Updated my missus's Legend to 2.2 today and ran a Quadrant Benchmark test on it..
best of 3 was 903 (avg is about 860)..
What are you getting on 2.1... and what sort of scores are you getting on the custom ROM's out there?
Post your scores stating which ROM you're running..

Clean Eclair, 2.1 = 4XX-5XX
Azure, 2.2 = 8XX-9XX
Cyanogenmod RC2, 2.2.1 = 8XX-9XX
Never benchmark a Sense ROM before so I cannot provide such information.

Best of 3 was 365 on unbranded 2.1 update 1

Constantly above 1xxx with CM RC1/RC2 and OC787 kernel...but that's normal since it's overclocked

Using a normal 2.1 legend, benchmarked three times... 377, 332 and 361. Even more anxious to get froyo now then!

Fixed....
Sense 2.1 was 3XX (4XX with OC)
However, even going from 3XX to 8XX (CM6.1) I did not see any speed improvements in games. OC DID improve the speed

First run on rooted Sense Froyo was 915. Second run was 870. Third was 927.

I'm sorry Sir, but are you ****ing-kidding-me? With almost stock 2.1 i had ~380. With azure 1.0.x now i have ~460.

I have not programmed anything in android yet, but I know programming java for some years and I think that I can tell you why those spectacular benchmarks doesn't apply in most games.
The improvements have been made in the dalvik virtual machine, which is responsible for executing the java code of the applications.
But if programmes want more performance, they can write part of the program directly in native code, developed in C or C++. This code cannot be optimized (more), thus applicacions using JNI massively don't see any improvement.
I suppose many games should be using JNI because of the advantages in performance, so they're already 'optimized'.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong

Go to the respected ROM's thread, or the OC thread and look around for other peoples results. That is the average result. 4XX on Azure? Seriously? Throw your phone to the wall and maybe that'll boost the Quadrant scores.

Raja, the avarage Azure scores are 4XX because JIT is actually disabled in that rom, even though the option present and checked.

Actually it is enabled. I asked Ali about it before. But then again that was few months ago, I might be wrong.

Sorry my bad.
Seems like JIT was disabled only until Azure 0.6.
However I can confirm that my Azure 1.0.1 quadrant score was 4XX (which is kind of low...), and as I now have 1095 with CM6.1 I don't think theres a problem with my legend's performance.

Sorry for the newbie question, but.. how do I run a Quadrant Benchmark ?
I know these numbers refer to the performance, and that the 2.2 scores a lot better, but in actual everyday usage - battery life, speed etc. what does this practically mean?

No worries mate. Seriously? The last time I used Azure I got around 8XX. That was version 1.0 I think.

Install Quadrant and run it. Well, technically it is just numbers. But most of the benchmarkers do admit feeling the difference between lower and higher scores. Some say those are placebo effect, but meh. I don't buy that ****.

Won't hardware benchmarks always be the same between all ROMs?
Is there a way to objectively benchmark resource management? Speed of the interface, opening apps etc.

All of the tests mean: The higher, the better.
The method of testing was the usual flashing, a couple of reboots to make sure every caching necessary was done and the average of 3 benchmark of each test.

And it's also 1.5 which makes it irrelevant for these tests.
Someone should come out with a rom, with JIT enabled.
Then they can claim they have the fastest rom.
I had it running on dc 2.7.2 without any problems.. Just cant use anything HTC, like lockscreen or sense.
But nexus or helix launcher and beautiful widgets, everything is normal again.
JIT is too buggy still, im looking foward to playing with compcache when someone gets 2.6.29 source working

Yea. We had some goodies starting to go in the .27 kernel but then the 2.1 stuff became the main focus so it never got finished. Ha.

I agree its not perfect.. But i can use it on my daily rom and run every app I would on a normal day without an issue.
Before dc 2.06 came out, i ran it on dc 2.05 for 3 days straight.'
I dont use bluetooth or some other random things. So it would probably start 101 problems for some people.. Like theres not enough already.

Linpack top ten

I was curious if one of the senior members could explain how people are able to achieve some of these crazy mflop and mhz when you go to the linpack site. I understand that the droid has a beefier processor so I get the 1300 mhz numbers - I just dont understand how you could hit 80 mflops.
Are these stable everyday devices or are they maxed out to hit the number and then dialed back for normal use.

The Linpack results are manipulable. If you know what you are doing you can get it to say pretty much what ever you'd like it to say.

No you didn't. That's fake also and was done well before Evil Eris 3 was done. I assure that Framework is not running a 1ghz overclock on an Evil Eris 3.0 rom. The 5.6 value is the highest legitimate value.

I and running XTR and hit about 2.6 - 3.1 @ 710mhz.
Anytime I exceed 710 I get boot looped.

Yeah I can confirm, I hit this number with Tainted Vanilla 1.4, JIT, overclock to 806mhz, and Airplane Mode enabled.

the highest i hit was 5.43 or something and that was white widow 3.2 767 overclocked and nothing running in the background... i should try airplane mode.
I faked them, linpack is worthless.
I put froyo on my wife's droid and it gets 9.8 consistently without messing with her everyday settings. It only has a 800mhz kernel too.

Linpack score

Just did a linpack scan on my JG1 flashed SGS running Lagfix and got a score of 8 Mflops. Is this is a good / bad score?
What are your scores?
8.2Mflops or so on JM5. I don't think anything other than JIT (in 2.2) is going to increase that; lag fixes certainly won't change it.

Also, keep in mind that Linpack is a synthetic benchmark and doesn't accurately reflect real performance. In fact, code like Linpacks will probably receive the biggest gain from JIT (more than real programs).
I'm using the I9000XXJP2 firmware and I think JIT is broken but I've been getting scores of 13.9 mflops with the lag fix installed!
I don't think it is broken but the dalvik files are not compiled to use ARM v7, cortex a8, or neon optimization.

HD2 SetCPU limits?

Hey everyone!
I was wondering...
So far, the HD2 in Android is able to run at a maximum of 1190Mhz. Is there a way to remove this limit and allow Android to increase the CPU clock frequency?
It'd be awesome to see what the Quadrant score would be if speeds of 1.3Ghz were used And Android would be blazing fast

No, in order to reach a higher clock speed the Kernal would have to be modified. But even then many other variables will also need to be considered. Vcore will need to be adjusted, and since at 1.2GHz it's already been increased they would have to increase it further in order not to hit a ceiling causing the CPU to become unstable under load.
Modifying code will also mean that other parts of the Kernal or OS might not play well together. Bugs can be created and would need to be fixed.
Sometimes even doing this will reduce performance rather than increasing. There is a reason why they havn't gone above that speed for now or ever.

"My build get's 3 more points in Linpack than you" big fat hairy deal.
It makes no difference, the only thing that matters is whether your build is fast enough, stable enough, and that you are happy with it. Why melt your phone just to say you've got the highest score in a completely arbitrary set of tests?

Search my kernel thread. I posted benchmarks at 1.3Ghz. There is really little point to it. I am back running at 1Ghz again.

I can validate this. I have been using many different kernels and for my money Hastarin's r8 (maximum cpu speed 998mhz) runs the smoothest and most stable, while giving me 6ma in standby (with 3G on).
Overclocked at 1.9ghz I saw some minor speed improvements but not really all that much and the battery drain was horrendous. Clock speed is overrated, there isn't really anything available on Android that requires more than 1ghz anyways. I have been playing IQ and Final Fantasy 8 with my wii remote on my current CM6 ROM with Hastarin's kernel and everything is smooth as butter.
Benchmark scores are useful to compare kernels and cpu governors, and I really only use Quadrant to look for big changes (+/- 200 points or more). I just updated from an Elbartome kernel to Hastarin r8 and saw an immediate 200 point Quadrant boost using an interactive governor at 1ghz and bettery battery drain.
The real differences are in the kernel, not the clock speed and as kernels get more and more efficient, you will see higher benchmarks from the same clock speed.
Remember that first Cotulla ROM we got on our HD2s in the very beginning? That was 1ghz and it ran like crap (actually amazing for a first ever port) compared to what we have now.

Again, it's the kernel you are using.
Has nothing to do with the phone, WinMo ROM, or Radio or anything.
All the ROMs in the dev section tell you which kernel they use. If they use Hastarin kernel you will not be able to OC it, I think everyone else uses an OC to 1190mhz kernel, so using their ROM or their kernel will give you the higher clock speed.

The OP asked a question and I answered it. I have run at 1.3 just fine but have chosen not to do so. Not everyone could of course. I have been lucky with my phone.

seems to me the ultimate kernel would be the r8 with undervolt under 1000 , and overvolt above 1000 to maintain sability .. i dun care about battery , i carry 2 with me

Did you happen to notice that out of every reply to this thread, yours was the least coherent and offered the least amount of useful information?
The one nugget of information you tried to give wasn't even accurate. It IS possible to release a 1.3ghz kernel, but one has not been publicly released because, as hastarin pointed out, it doesn't really improve performance.
hastarin is a kernel developer, he knows more about this stuff than any of us and I am sure the OP could use the information provided by him and all of us who actually use different kernels and either OC or don't.
Thanks everyone. While it is true that all I wanted to know was if it was possible, a little exra knowledge can't hurt anyone Hastarin, I use your kernel, and admit it's amazing! Guess I don't really need 1.3Ghz as long as the device runs smooth, right? Quadrant speeds aren't totally relevant but I like to show off sometimes, like we all do
so hastarin's kernel allow speed up to 998 mhz?

He's also got a point. He's not meaning everyone, especially not hastarin, but posts #4, 5, 6 and 7 are pointless, uninformative and even wrong.

ok, i know that is different score on Quadrant... but let say why old Android phone like one year ago Xperia x10 always got lower score than samsung s2? tat y in fact samsung S2 is powerful than before phone... i was able to score more than 4000 points with my old hd2. and the builds in that time weren't even running stable. so my old hd2 is as good as your s2?

i was able to score more than 4000 points with my old hd2. and the builds in that time weren't even running stable. so my old hd2 is as good as your s2?

these were the first builds that were running from sd card. i don't have these versions anymore because they were not stable and lot of things didn't work and i don't have my hd2 anymore. this should just show you that quadrant isn't reliable. the gpu isn't tested at all.
and who the hell does care about stock settings on xda? nobody here has a stock phone. antutu or smartbench if you care about numbers. they're at least able to test dualcore cpus. but a higher score still doesn't mean that your phone is better.

first of all, you are using a wrong benchmark to test. secondly, you are not comparing apple to apple. what i meant was your G version is most likely running on update3 source code. when i flash a kernel with update3 source code, my stock rom is able to hit more than 4300+
