[WANTED] Camcorder/Camera Advanced Controls - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hello. For some time now I have been getting frustrated with the standard camera/camcorder for my SGS.
I will point out some of the main things I dislike
Lack of features
It's hard to take pictures or start recording unless you look at the screen to see where the button is located to initiate it
Camera closes after idle for too long
Screen controls are too close together
Files do not save if you accidentally press the back button while recording
I have searched Google, forums and the market to try and find a replacement with no success
I would love to have camera/camcorder replacement that has the following
The biggest feature for me would be to have the ability to use either of the Home/Volume/Power buttons to use the camera/camcorder at least for Record, Pause, Stop and taking pictures
This would make it so much easier to use it without having to always look at the screen to make sure you are pressing the right area and will also eliminate accidentally pressing the wrong button
For example
Home key could be used for taking pictures and start recording video pressing it again will pause it and long holding it will stop the recording and auto save.
Volume will be for zoom and power button could possible take pictures and long holding for toggle night mode or something like that
I dunno about you but I find this configuration to feel natural
In the menu there should also be the option to exit camera/camcorder as some people use home key for this instead of backing out and the home button will already have a use
All settings can be controlled via touchscreen such as:
Option to toggle the camera/camcorder from closing on idle
Image/Shooting mode
All other general settings
If anyone else thinks this is a good idea or has any further input on making this better please post something
If there is a dev out there wanting a challenge please post Perhaps if enough people are interested in raising some funds there could be a bounty
P.S I wasn't sure if I should post this in Themes and Apps or here

Sould be possible i think, Power btn already done a thing : it lock screen without stop recording...
Also cyanogenmod as a great camera app, wait for it...

Surely there is something else out there other then the cyanogenmod one.

- i hate the factory camera

I'm shocked that I'm the only one talking about this. Shame on everyone lol

Ill complain a bit too
I dislike the focus of the samsung app. Even in macro mode, you take an object from a 5cm distance and tap to focus..
it's going to focus well then lose focus. Even if take the picture when the focus is correct, it's going to output a blurred unfocused pic
The only "solution" is to take pictures with at least 10cm distance, or 15. But the camera seems to be able to picture much closer.. so it's annoying

Wow. People actually use the onboard camera? Camera 360 is what I've replaced my stock app with. But sadly stock samsung app is prob the best camera app from any dev/phone maker. What you need is a decent small camera like a canon ixus

I have the same problem. While using auto focus etc depending on the distance/light it will hang there thinking about it

I have not heard of 360 *Checks it online* - To tell you the truth I don't mind the camera.... I guess I really just want to be able to use the home button to initiate take picture, start recording, pause and long hold for stop. Maybe there is a way to change something in the file hmmmmm surely a smart dev would know

I tried Vignette and Camera 360 Pro, well the 360 programs doesn't cut it, the interface is horrible and buggy.
Vignette is quite ok however - the focus works. It's missing the directional focus from the samsung app however, although I can live with it of course. Vignette also saves jpegs that are less compressed/higher quality.
To be honest i'd be just fine with Samsung's app if the focus worked fine in macro mode, and the jpegs were higher quality (maybe even make the pano mode high resolution )
Mostly because the controls/settings/etc are much better in the Samsung app.
Now since it's proprietary, not much we can do about these issues I guess xD (the button can prolly be hacked in tho)

Power button to take pics. Hopefully will soon be able to record/pause long hold to stop in camera mode soon if anyone else was interested.

Is a focus-free camera possible?

My pet peeve on HD is the camera auto focus. It's nothing to write home about, but OK for a phone, to my taste. The major problem with it is the autofocus which takes forever to work. Since it's difficult (for me) to hold the device steadily for such a long time, my guess is that a "focus free" mode (setting focus to infinity IINM) would make things way better for most uses. At least it work well on my Asus P750.
Does anyone know if it's possible on HD?
This is an interesting question. I havn't got my HD yet, but I can imagine, one of the things which stops this handset being used for quick snaps, is the auto focus.... I'd be intruiged to hear suggestions on this.
....Ib a n e
Problem is these camera units often have to be wide open apertures, to compensate for the tiny sensors. If it was F8 or something most stuff would be in focus all the time, but pictures in anything but bright sun would be just a huge blur because of the long shutter time needed.
Basically, camera phones will always be useless, regardless of how many megapixels they shoehorn in there.
Well, I can live with blur, actually. As long as there's something in the picture. But this 3 second long focusing just doesn't allow me to capture anything!
I don't want to live with blur at all, no point if there IS someone in the picture but they look like tom welling in smallville using super speed

Check the user manual. It might me a user defined setting let you change the duration taken to say 1 second?

[Q] other camera UI for x1

i believe the camera ui of the x1 really sucks bigtime.
in high res you can't zoom with the camera and video doesn't zoom at all.
also you have to dig your way through the menu to change settings.
i know the samsung omnia for example has all the settings on the side of the screen, which compensates for the overall sloppy speed of phonecams.
allthough the camera was only 2 MP, the one on my p990 had much better handling.
i'm no developer, so i was wondering if someone could tell me if it's possible to change the camerasoftware. and if yes, where can i find any?
the camera hasn't optical zoom, how do you think to zoom? the digital zoom is only a crop and scale actions
The interface is SOOOO SLOOOOW...
Once you press the camera button, the application takes like 10 seconds before you can start shooting.
Then, when you press the shoot/shutter button, it takes 3-5 seconds before it ACTUALLY takes a picture.
WTF. Sony makes good cameras... what happened here?!
i thought the interface is ok.
maybe i'm too used to winmo
zoom
i don't care about the lack of optical zoom. when making pictures with 3 mp phonecam i don't expect it to be crisp. it's useful to catch moments.
and also, if you lower the imagequality in cameramode all of a sudden you CAN zoom. so what's up with that?
and like johnchan notices, the cam is so f***in slow. if you get it running and then also have to go in the menu to select the right settings, you better decide not to make pictures and videos at all. before ur up and running a zillion moments to catch have passed already.
if there exists no other usable camera ui for the x1, i challenge the better developers to invent and design it.
that's why one of my biggest questionmarks is placed at the question if it is possible at all to change it.
i heard bob and obama say we can, so surprise me.
Come On Guys the Phone is practically Brand New give it a little time the bugs will be worked out.
bugs?
the ui is not a bug. it's a not well thought of interface.
and new ... come on. it was released in february.
not to be rude. but i'm not looking for a discussion. looking for answers. anybody?

you said: if you LOWER the imagequality you can zoom... what's your zoom? The phone raises quality and crop what are you targeting manteining your resolution
it's only logical matter
about interface, it's ok for me, not speedy, nor too slow
The thing that bothers me with the camera is, that the shutter speed is much too slow.
If the camera is held in hands it's nearly impossible to shoot photos that aren't blurred.
Maybe I just do something wrong, then please tell me, but for me it seems that the camera is useless in this state.
be more relaxed when make pictures
seriously this is an issue for me too, but I think isn't interface related.

Same here. The UI doesn't bother me too much, and I actually like the touch focus, but the shutter speed is absurdly slow, on the order of 5+ seconds. The result is that both my own hands and the subject have moved by the time the picture is taken and you either miss the shot or get a blurry image. Given that this phone can record video at vga, 30fps, I don't quite see why taking a single photograph would be so laggy?
Yea shutter speed is total crap compared to my old K800i. Or any other phone with a camera for that matter.
Not to mention its already hard enough to push the camera button while keeping steady (i keep sliding the keyboard a bit when i try to push the button =.=)
simply use the touchpad button... it takes photos much faster and u don't have to push it so hard.

Thanks for the advise -I didn't knew the joystick could trigger the cam too. Isn't perfect but works much better for me because the camera isn't moved while pressing the button.
yeah taking photos with joystick is much better but i had problem because i slide finger over it a little and been switching to videos etc. lowered sensitivity of the joystick and it helped a bit but still now its harder for me to use the joystick anywhere else :/

The first thing I did was to deactivate the joystick -it's very annoying when you want to confirm a contact but by pressing the button it switches to another contact/program/whatever.
I want this button to simply act as a s a button -works nice for me
sweet!

i started the thread complaining about the ui.
this tip of you is magnifique! it makes taking pictures so much easier.
and also the quality isn't so bad at all.
simple solutions. i like! even better than my suggested one.
thnx
I also can confirm that a sonyericsson user expects a better camera but for WINMO the camara is quite OK.
Just try sport settings with joystick and the camera will be blazing fast.
BTW: Does anybody know where to change the location to save pictures from internal mem to sd card ? Can not find it in ui. I am using cooked rom - using the original rom asked you whee so save when cam app was started the first time.

At settings screen, press the arrow at the lower right corner. In that new screen, press the upper left logo (if not selected already). It should be in the list.
Sport mode raises the shutter speed slightly, it's not great but it is an improvement..

Application Idea -- "Steady cam" using accelerometer

Disclaimer 1: I'm not a developer.
Disclaimer 2: I searched and didn't find a similar app
In searching for applications to improve the results from my wife's iPhone camera, I came across a few iPhone apps that cleverly use the accelerometer to assist in picture taking -- namely they wait until the accelerometer registers the fact that the phone has stopped moving before triggering the shutter.
It seems to me that a similar application would work on the Diamond/Touch Pro/HD -- once the "shutter button" has been pressed, the camera autofocuses, and then waits for a "steady" moment to finish taking the picture.
Again, I'm a UI/Tech Specs type of person, so I don't know how open the camera api is. That said, it seems, in theory, that this should work and wouldn't be to tough to do (hell, they managed to do it on the iPhone).
What do you think?

Have you really noticed a difference on iPhone with this program?
here you go buddy
this may solve ur problem

That's an interesting app, but not quite the same thing. While it's nice that it lets you level the shot, it doesn't look like it uses the accelerometer to trip the shutter. So the hand shake potential is still there.
As far as the Steadycam app, it helps. It isn't going to turn the iPhone into a digital camera replacement, but it does assist low light pictures.
Here's a review of two of the iPhone Apps I've been playing with:

It is a good app if it exists. It is good for someone's hands are not steady when taking photos.

Any good camera apps?

One of my biggest gripes with this phone is that they gave it this great camera but with no image stabilization. Has anyone come across any good camera apps? Preferably something that allows you to take a picture via the touch screen (like you can in 2.1 but not 2.2) or provides some image stabilization. I tried camera 360, which seems decent, but FC's a lot.
PS. I tried a thread search to see if this topic is around but due to the numerous threads on camera related issues pre-2.2 OTA leak, they're hard to find.
Thanks in advance for any help.
If you place your finger on the screen and hold it there, it will take the picture.
To be more precise it'll focus where you put the finger and take a picture.
The best camera app I've tried is Vignette. The "normal" processing for the app makes much better pictures than the default camera, and it's got some excellent effects as well. It also has a "steady shot" option where it waits until the camera is still before taking the shot. The demo is low-res but you can use it to see the basic results you'll get. The full version was worth it for me.
Tried a few apps and I do like some features of Vignette but will say the stock camera app does the best in my opinion with settings at (8mp fine bright -1 contrast +1) can hold on screen and it will auto focus then snap pic
here are some untouched samples of mine of just misc things the other day

Hd2 wp7 Camera Autofocus? (not camcorder)

Hey i just wanted to know if there is a way to focus the camera in wp7 becouse it's all blurry?
Yes im having the same problem
camcorder is working fine
Unless we get a sort of focus implementation like in android then it's just like that. The camera was designed to have a button which could be half pressable to focus, and then when pressed in fully, takes the picture. Obviously we don't have a button like that so, a touch sort of focus needs to be implemented for us, until then, pictures will be blurry for now.

'double tap' amazing idea!
Solution to problem
Quick'n'dirty Workaround to Autofocus:
1. Before taking the picture, switch to video mode
2. Wait for the camera to refocus ~1 second - you will see the image sharpness change
3. Switch back to camera mode and take your picture
This works because the camera will simply retain the focus distance that the video camera set.
So, until Microsoft implements touch-focus (which they really should) we could just use this.

quick you have to be like lightning to take a picture as it starts un-focusing straight away.
By the time you press the button you have moved the phone so its blurred & camera is already out of focus.
Must be an easier way.
Please please please someone design a fix for the camera.
I loved the panoramic shot aswell on hd2 but everything is gone.
Video is great but camera is poor.
Thank you
Before taking a picture toggle between photo and video mode. That fixes the autofocus issue. Not an ideal solution but an alternative nonetheless
maybe its can help for developers :
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/151485/Hacking-the-WP7-Camera-The-basics.aspx
Maybe a possible solution could be map the focus function (the half click) in another button?
I think the solution is because we don't have a two position button is to do touch the screen to focus and then take the shot. But that probably requires a lot of coding.
Until this is sorted, I think its a major flaw with HD2 and WP7
Use the camera a lot, unless its bright sunlight the camera just will not focus.
Luckily I can dual boot, lets hope for a fix of some application that uses touch screen to focus
It's possible the focus could be mapped to one of the volume buttons within the Camera app.
This would likely depend on the half-press on native WP7 systems having its own key mapping, separate from the full-press, and the Camera app listening for each keymapping separately. We'd just need to hack the keymapping for the half-press to the volume button. This is, of course, if WP7 still deals with keymapping the way earlier versions did.
Also, if the Camera app treats the camera button as some kind of special case, and rather than 2 mappings for half- and full-press, it has a single mapping, it'll likely need a major rewrite to support focus on the HD2.
Fingers crossed it's just a case of searching the code for keypress 0xC1 and replacing it with 0x76 (for example).

640x480 is not good enough.
It will be unlikely we'll be able to map this app to replace the internal Camera app completely.
Will 3rd party apps, like barcode readers, be able to use this app?
Hexediting the native Camera app and changing the key mapping, and cooking it into a new ROM would be much better.
That app shows promise, though.
Dont know if this helps, but here is another solution that claims to fix HTC HD2 cam running WP7. no camcorder though.. http://aliwaqas.info/shcamera-fixes-camera-issues-on-htc-hd2-running-windows-phone-7-xap/

Autofocus works PERFECT!
For recording videos, just use the original camera app.

Well one solution if we are to implement focusing through buttons instead of touch, is that we have the call button when held down, focus, and then the camera will take the picture after we've released the call button.

That's the behavior I thought would be appropriate too.
A touch screen focus would be even better, cause it would allow, like on WinMo 6.5, to focus wherever we want on the picture. But it would require a more coding than just adding a press-to-focus/release-to-shoot behavior.
The SHCameraApp is nice, but its resolution is limited, and it would be nicer to have a single, integrated app to do the photos and videos. Nonetheless, it's a nice workaround for the time being.
