I'm also using Barnacle. Works great...

+1 for barnacle...super easy and works awesome

Cant find Barnacle in market wtf? and im rooted already

no
first root
then get barnacle from market or google barnacle tether.apk
then install it
then go to its settings and in the LAN part put athwlan0
now it should work

I never had to specify any LAN/WAN interfaces for Barnacle to work. Weird that some have to that.

In 1.6 firmware, I had to change the interface. In 2.1 firmware, I didn't.

Excellent, that there is a thread regarding barnacle, right now!
I have installed barnacle yesterday and it was running nearly wo. problems (sometimes it does not want to connect, but another try will do it ;-) ).
But the connection I have with my notebook is very bad. Tested on speedtest.net said 200kbit/s down and 30kbit/s up...thats good in emergency case, but too slow for smooth surfing I would say!
How is the connection when you use barnacle?!?!
Btw: I use Wifi Tether! Also tried Wifi Legacy, but no difference spotted...
Sent from my X10i 2.1 using XDA App

Now im really confused can i downgrade back to 1.6 and update to a a diff version of 2.1 i cant find or access alot of things help

I'm also using Banacle. Unlike 1.6, you don't need to assign interface name in Android 2.1, just left it blank.
Before press the start botton, ensure that wifi is turn-off and you have connection to 3G (or EDGE)

does barnacle tether offer bluetooth dial up networking like PDANet?

The wifi tether app from the market should work though right? Everyone that's rooted so far seems to indicate that is the case

[Q] How do you perform WiFi Tethering on Wildfire?

Hi!
First, I'm a total newbie regarding the Wildfire and Android. But since there are more people like me and there is no straight-forward answer in this forum, I thought I could ask the question.
How can I make my Wildfire emit a WiFi signal so that I can access the internet on my MacBook and my iPod Touch?
I have already rooted my Wildfire, following the steps explained in this link: h t t p :/ / rootmydroid. co. uk/guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/ using unrEVOked.
I guess my Wildfire is now rooted, because I have the Superuser app.
Then I started to download some apps with which tethering supposedly should be possible, but they're not working:
-Android WiFi Tether: ht tp://code .google .com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Aria
I can emit a WiFi signal, which is picked up by my iPod and my MacBook (running in OSX as well as in Windows XP). But when I try to access the internet it cannot get a network address (MacBook) and on the iPod you see that there is a connection, but internet does not work.
-Barnacle Wifi Tether (see the market)
When I try to establish a WiFi signal, I get the following errors:
Failed to set AP_SCAN
[1] Terminated ./dhcp
[2] Terminated ./nat
Stopped unexpectedly
I got USB tethering working using EasyTether. Install this on your computer ht tp://www .mobile-stream. com/easytether/drivers .html (Windows only) and download the app on your phone from the market ht tp ://www .mobile-stream. com/easytether/android. html.
But since I would like to have WiFi access to the internet and it's just for Windows, this is not an option.
I've heard about PDANet, but I cannot find it in the Market..
So... can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Why do Barnacle and WiFi Tether not work? And what can I do to make it work?
Thanks in advance!
PS The links don't work, remove the spaces. I'm a newbie so link posting is prohibited.
Am I the only one with this problem?
get pdanet from appbrain, just install it and also install fast web installer on phone, and go on the appbrain website and it will dl straight to your phone when your mobile net is on. you have to be signed into your gmail account.

Thanks for the input.
PDA Net is not what I want, because I want to get internet on my iPod Touch..
And, @Bluedragon, I'm a noob So what do you mean with Wildpuzzle and where do I get it?
But what I don't understand is, WHY does that Android tethering app not work? I just seems like my MacBook does not get a valid IP address to access the internet. The WiFi network itself is visible..
There must be a solution without installing another rom.
I found after a couple of hours of trying a few months ago the the following version of wifi tether works with the wildfire. 2.0.5-pre8. You also need to also need to put the file fw_bcm4329.bin into a folder you need to create called android.tether . I would not try to change the ssid name or passphrase either as both seem to corrupt the program. Hope this helps I use it to connect my IPad to my wildfire and it works great. All the files you need you can find via google.
Thank you very much! That works!
The app seems to use a lot of power, though. But that's probably normal?
I tuned down the transmitting power. See if that works.
And I can't even change the SSID. Every character I try seems to be "corrupt".
I have a stock HTC WIldfire ROM 2.1 rooted. Installed Wifi Tether pre9 release using a custom SSID and WEP key no problem.
I've used easy tether from the market place. Works great.
Easy tether won't work with an iPod though.
Seems there is not much information on wifi tethering on the wildfire.
Installing a custom rom looks to be difficult but maybe that's just me
It's not - just copy the file, root , boot into recovery , DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!!! and install the rom. If you hate the rom you can restore from the backup

It's not working because you have to root the phone. You can use the Visionary app in the Market (thanks MoDaCo) to do a temp root, and then run tethering app. I haven't found the temp root to be damaging, but you're doing this at your own risk.

I am rooted... or it would have said it can't gain super user rights.
Anyone else had any luck with this? I can get it to run, start the network, see the SSID, etc. But I never get an IP address on my client device. Worked fine on my G2, but doesn't work on the myTouch 4G.
Nevermind, I downloaded the newest version and it works perfectly:

This thread is talking about apples and oranges.
I'd like to see the "official" froyo tether work. The Google code one will work with or without the tethering plan, as will PDANet and other apps.
Once we see the "hotspot" feature working, we can reverse the setting that enables it without T-Mo's permission.

BTW, where did you get this info? When I launch the built-in app, I see the SSID but dhcp doesn't seem to work. There's no agreement (like most other trial-ware junk like Tmo TV) - so what gives? If it's free, it certainly isn't working so far.
You guys are aware of the native wifi hotspot app already installed on the phone?

Anyone know whether the MobileAP from the Samsung phones, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804, works on this phone or the G2, or is it only for the Samsung phones?
I know there is 'Wireless Tether,' but I need infrastructure vs. ad-hoc.
had somebody any experience with download speeds after the 5gb limit has been reached?

i can't get preinstalled wifi hotspot on my mytouch to work. can anyone help?

(FYI) Barnacle wifi tether

Just to let you know that you can use this instead of changing apn settings, i tried that and seemed to freeze, used barnacle the first time this morning and its been working flawlessly all day.
Agreed... Barnacle works perfectly.
The APN route is cleaner, but unreliable.
I also agree, I am waiting to get on my home wireless before the market will allow me to download Barnacle thanks to AT&T market filtering, but I have been running a google tethering app for the time being and it is much easier and faster to use, just not as "clean" I guess.
My Phones:
Motorola MicroTAC Elite
Nokia 7160
Nokia 6340i
Nokia 6230
Nokia 6682
HTC Tilt
HTC Fuse
HTC Tilt2 (custom ROM)
Samsung Captivate (custom ROM,rooted)
Motorola Atrix (rooted)
I'm using "wireless tether for root". How is barnacle compared to that? wpa is the only difference i noticed in their features.

I don't see it listed on Android market anywhere.
You won't - ATT blocks it. Google search, they have a website to download the .apk. Have to be rooted of course to sideload it.
To get blocked Apps on in market, just turn your phone on without the sim. Download and install all you want without sim.

You do in fact need root access for this program and also if you use MarketAccess you can trick the market into thinking you are on T-Mobile and get Barnacle.
strange..
I rooted and tried it from app brain, but I keep getting the requested item could not be found. Is there another way i need to install it?
thanks
Of course it works, we have been talking about it since the 19th....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961365
Search is your friend!
To get it to work you need root. Also you will need market enabler..which just tricks the market into thinking your phone runs on another service provider..as att blocks alot of apps

Ahhh, no..... while I can't say I know this for an absolute fact, DG said he's been APN tethering the crap out of his Atrix for the past week and AT&T hasn't "caught on," or nothing. With Barnacle, I'd say it would be even harder to "catch" someone wirelessly tethering - they never caught me or anyone else I know when I was using my Captivate!

I've used barnacle for the last 5 months and no change in my plan.
I have my Atrix rooted and have installed Barnacle but I get "Permission Denied" from Barnacle and then "Stopped Unexpectedly". Then the ATT hot spot validation comes up in the task bar and says account not setup. Any idea what I may have missed here?

How To Enable AD-Hoc Support

to get AD-Hoc working you first need root and either root explorer (paid app but worth the money) or es file explorer (free but you have to enable root privaleges inside the app. its under the settings menu)
1. navigate to system/bin and copy wpa_supplicant
2. past this to your sd card as a backup
3. rename wpa_supplicant to wpa_supplicant.old
4. extract the file from the download and past it into the system/bin folder. (should be wpa_supplicant)
4. Long press on the file once copied
6. select Permissions and set to User: RWE, Group & Others:RE only
again a big big thank you to the original poster/fixer the original thread is

Ad Hoc through my Windows Phone
Just followed your procedure and I am now wirelessly connected to my Samsung Omnia using WMWiFiRouter. Thanks. This alone was worth the price of admission to rooting.
sorry I'm a little down with the lingo, would this allow me to tether to my droid x using wireless tether?
Ad hoc solution did not work for me...
Followed everything to the letter - got WiFi error - would not connect or even turn on WiFi...
I renamed the old file - got rid of .old and all was back to normal...
I did notice the the Group the file belonged to was NOT the same as the old file. Going to look into that...

got the same error. Solved it by typing "chmod 755 wpa_supplicant" in a terminal emulator, so that it sets the right permissions, dont know why using root explorer didnt work for me(but i didn't follow this tutorial).
This didnt work for me with my evo,
Hmmm... I have a Thunderbolt and I'm rooted with Android Tether. My Iconia sees and latches onto my phone without having to edit the WPA supplicant files like I needed to on my Galaxy tab. Am I missing something or maybe have a rare Iconia Tab that does this where most don't?
