Anyone know if there is a dev emulator(software type) for windows that I could use to test an tweak with, as I like the stability of my phone. I am just trying to start doing some work myself, so if I'm totally off as far as this even being an option let me know(nicely please ))

Closest thing you'll find is AVD which is android virtual device that we use to debug programs we write. Its part of the android sdk and gets integrated Eclipse when you set up your environment. Personally, I doubt it would be worth a damn for ROM making or tweaking. I am not sure how you would load any software on it other than vanilla android. Also its painfully ef'ing slow. I can't believe with my i7 and 16 gigs of ram it still takes 3 minutes to boot, and on my old laptop it takes 7 minutes. I really think big G could have done better with it, and its due for an over haul.

There is also the route of being able to run in vbox that I have heard, but my guess is that you would need an intel x86 kernel compiled for it....just a guess though.

so, i've been thinking..since there has been a successful Debian port for webtop, would it be possible to create a port of openSuSE? I've been using openSuSE for a while, and it's much, much better than Debian (at least in my experience). I'd love to see this happen! i don't have much dev experience, so i'm not sure how much i'd be able to help..

Last night I spent about 30 mins setting up backtrack, it was a lot easier than I thought. I did use the free app backtrack installer from the market, it provides all the links to everything you need.
You do need to be rooted though.

Lol didn't mean to thank you, twas a accident.
But anyways, Widows 8 for ARM uses a module called a Trusted Platform Module. Afaik, it is a hardware chip that basically locks the device to Widows 8. That is on top of the signed images and secure boot type of stuff.

we might be able to run windows 8 given that the surface also uses tegra 3, so there could be a possibilty there, just saying, but windows is a pretty good os not that bad like you think, actually not bad at all.

Did nobody read what I wrote? This is not an issue of drivers/compatible hardware/supported hardware or anything like that.
This is an issue of Microsoft locking Windows 8 for ARM to certain tablets using secure boot implemented in the UEFI. They are also using TPMs to lock the tablets to Windows 8.

You don't want a windows 8 device. I have the HTC Titan and I've tried to live with a really limited app selection but it just doesn't work. There isn't even an official Pandora app, and a lot of others are glitchy as hell. The os is pretty bad ass but with JB being as smooth as it is wp7 loses a lot of appeal. My NGex arrives tomorrow.

Actually what your talking about locks windows to the surface tablet, not the other way around. You can easily emulate an insecure UEFI instance, after all that's how hackintoshes work

Actually, I do want a Windows 8 device. I'm using a WP7.5 HD2 now. It's not as bad as you say, and as I don't use Pandora, it's not an issue for me. Also, most of the apps I use are not glitchy at all. What are you using?
I'm also not crazy about having that many apps on my device, so I'm totally fine with it. WP7 is a wonderful OS, please don't put it down just because you prefer something else.
Okay, I'm using windows 8 release preview x64 on my gateway desktop, and I need some help with a couple things.
First of all, metro apps will not load. I have tried several tweaks around xda and other sites and cannot get anything more than the app preview screen coming up for just a second, then closing. I have an ATI Radeon 5450HD graphics card, running proper amd catalyst drivers for windows 8, and all settings are correct.
Second, has anyone been able to get dfs tool working on windows 8? I've tried installing it in compatibility mode for windows XP, Vista, and 7, all with no luck.
Any help with either issue would be greatly appreciated... And sorry this isn't in a Q&A section, but I couldn't find Q&A forum for windows 8. TIA...

I have my Win 8 running in a VMware virtual machine. I noticed that Metro apps will timeout loading if it is taking too long.
The app eventually loads but does so minimized. Check your left side to see if it is running.
If you are seeing a lot of your apps doing this, you may need to upgrade your computer to something faster.

I understand that... But not a single one of the metro apps will start. They just bring up an app preview screen, then it drops to the background, and the app never actually opens.

I'd just reinstall. You have something wrong. Did it ever work? Maybe go back to a better point in time with System Restore.
You are logged in with a Live account, right? You can't load Metro apps with a local account (to my knowledge). You have to log on with a Live account.

It's a fresh install, I've tried on two different machines, neither of which have ever had metro apps work... And yes, I'm using a live account...

Theyve never worked, even on my laptop, which has Intel integrated graphics. But, I've not tried the guide you linked... I'll try that and report back sometime today...

The guide is for and graphics only.... go to Intel driver utility And install the latest driver then try.... I had the same problem it has something to do with hardware acceleration.

Windows 8 didn't run properly on my laptop too, had some papercuts as well. The specification requirements for Windows 8 are equal to those of Windows 7. If you can run Windows 7, you can run Windows 8. So, it's all just a bit of patience before RTM and the final release become available.

While we wait for official Ubuntu on our phones, we can experiment with other ways to get it running unofficially.
There are numerous guides to running Ubuntu using a chroot and VNC but VNC is often considered slow.
I will suggest using this app (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14816535/AndroiX-debug.apk) instead of Xvnc. It's X window made into an app.
Start your terminal and chroot normally, then launch AndroiX. Now type in your terminal:
export DISPLAY=localhost:0
xinit
and switch back to AndroiX running your Ubuntu desktop.

If you really want to make us a favor, you should add more information. Just posting an APK from some Dropbox account is not going to help users.
What is needed:
1. There is this "AndroiX" project with a Google Group at https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/androix-users , which does not have a delivarable yet, and probably the APK you are refering to, has to do with that project. Can we get a proper picture as to what exactly that this APK support? Yeah, it's an X server, written in Java, that supports some X protocols. Can we get an APK from some official page?
2. Is what you mention related to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxats9ejrG0 ? It has even fewer information.
