Hey guys i'm thinking of getting the surround and wanted to ask people who already have it what happens when you play music/phone rings when the phone is closed? Does the sound come from the hidden speakers? won't that sound muffled? or what? thx!
From what I can tell, even when the phone is closed the sound still comes from the same speakers. So the sound does seem muffled by the front plate of the phone. However, the quality of the sound is still great for a phone even with the speaker closed. If I'm listening to something, I usually leave the speaker slid out though.

and on a related note, why is there a speaker grill on the back of the phone too? (see attached pic)
I like the weight and feel of the phone compared to the other thiner/lighter models. It feels like a solid well made phone. I definitely use my phone more for music now and really like the Zune integration. The large speaker bar provides crisp clear sound that remains clear at the highest volume. There are three different sound modes (changed by pressing the silver square button on the speaker bar): Normal, Dolby Mobile, and SRS Enhanced.
Overall I like the Surround, I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of customization (true for all WP7 devices) but I expect that will improve over time. I'm also looking forward to some more great apps.
As for the back cover, that appears to be a vent hole as there is no speaker (at least visibly) behind it.
If you are going to get a WP7 and enjoy using your phone for music/media then I think the Surround is a great choice.

You don't really notice any muffling of the sound until you slide the speaker out, and even though, I wouldn't say it makes a HUGE difference - a difference yes. I think the phone, while it has a nice solid quality feel, is a bit thick for my liking. Coming from an iPhone 4, then Samsung Galaxy S (super thin), and now this, the Surround almost feels like the Tilt 2. I just ordered the Samsung Focus (I think the HD7 is awesome, but I wouldn't be able to enjoy 3G since I'm on AT&T). I hope the Focus is thinner.
That speaker looking grill is just that, it allows the sound to have an alternative venue to escape in the event that the speakers are covered. Thats what helps keep the sound crisp and clear when the phone is in the closed position. Think if it as a ported sub-woofer box... Well at least thats what the HTC rep told me

I thought that's what it was for too, but I don't know if it's very helpful.
If you get this phone and use the alarm like me, just get use to leaving the speaker open. It's not really a big deal.

The speakers sound FINE whether open or closed. There is a grill on the back that helps when the case is closed. I think all this stems from a couple of dim witted no talent reviewers who trashed the entire phone on this one caveat.
Despeite what a few of them say, the phone has great audio, great video, great everything, the phone is NOT bulky, the screen is plenty bright with good saturation, the zune software does a great job of converting videos.
The only limitations of the phone are those of the OS and that will certainly improve over time. In fact there are already 2500 apps available, many for free, that extend the abilities of the phone and you can bet your whiskers MS is working on upgrades right now. Someone just put out an app where you can vote on what improvements you want to see next. There are new apps appearing every day so having the phone is fun....that's what we do here...tinker and maximize our toys until the next one comes out ))))

Not to be a pain, but can you stay on topic? We are talking about the sound when you do not slide the speaker out. No offense intended, just saying...
I failed to mention that the sound is definitely muffled when closed. Is it still loud? Yes, it's fine, but definitely better when slid out.

Hey all, watching some flash videos today made me notice how poorly the N1 puts sound out the back speaker, even compared to my old G1. I remember back in my Blackberry days that people used to mod the backs to "let more sound get out", and so I started looking into this...
First off, the speaker is GINORMOUS in relation to the slit. If you look inside the back where the speaker is, you can see a little internal grille, and the small slit for sound to escape. There's also a TON more room where that grille isnt attached to the back (same shape as the slit, only about 5x the size) that could be milled out pretty easily, and still retain the "keep crap out of the back" feature of the grille.
So, this leaves me with a few questions:
Where can I get a replacement back, in case my mill catches a bit more than I anticipate?
Anyone else interested? I figure if I set up to do one, I might as well bang a few others out instead of setting up multiple times.
Once I get a second back, I will be going at this with pics and hopefully notable improvement in projecting sound into my hand, and back toward my face!
I might not be a software hacker, but when it comes to this sort of thing, I figure its the best way I can give back to the community!
Give HTC support a call and tell them your cover doesn't line up properly(I don't think any of them do) they'll send you out a replacement. If they don't they can sell you one for ten bucks I think.
Hope to hear good results from your mod, might do it myself.

Yea, I think the OP should test and see if there's even a noticeable difference without the back cover. I would think not...
Try removing the cover, sounds WAY worse.
Yes, I completely realize the back sounds bad off, its acting as a resonator, or isolating front from back waves of the speaker, which causes phase cancellation. Thus why im not removing the cover, just making the one hole bigger. It SHOULD not lose the "low end" that it has with the back on (if you want to call it that.
Either way, Im hacking at least one up, Ill post results!

I would suggest to replace the speaker with a Desire one, some people who have both phones pretend it's way louder on Desire, and yes it's the same form factor and size so it should fit
It is quite a bit louder without the cover but sounds bad due to the lack of resonance.
Shouldnt be too bad with just an enlargement, make sure you put something to block out dust. Let us know how it goes.
I've found that attaching one of these to the back quite useful...
or try a vuvuzela
I think the engineer who designed that whole was well aware of resonance qualities. If you make that whole and turns out better, you should apply to HTC job hehe...

hah, I've never seen anyone else do it, but I do this all the time if I'm showing people a video or am in a noisy setting (ie. party)

Nah, everyone does it.. I mostly do it when I want to listen to something quiet, I can turn it down and redirect the sound towards me.
I actually have a really good pair of earphones. I prefer that the main speaker is in the back, instead of in the earpiece like some phones. Prevents earspeaker blowout and call quality is damn good with this phone so far.

I try to put it up against a wall. Your hand can work to absorb sound waves, thus deadening sound and lowering overall quality; but drywall bounces the sound waves back nearly impeccably. Desks, etc, any hard surface should do the trick.
Yes the phone is real fast, has all this cool stuff like 4" Super AMOLED, GPS, Wifi, HSPA, 1GHz processor, etc., but beyond what they list on the spec sheets, there are many compromises, bad design choices, and cost-cutting for the physical portion of the phone and its usability as a "phone" phone. I am still sticking with the vibrant as it performs well for a smartphone, but it does bother me that I am sort of downgrading in other respects.
For one, Samsung made a bad design decision by using a cheap, thin, shiny plastic back cover that no one likes. It is basically the entire phone aside from the glass front, and becomes a slimy mess very quickly. It's also not very secure and creaks at the edges where it snaps on the side, or at least mine does. The way it tapers back like an iPhone 3G and has a thickness of less than 10mm makes it hard to hold and unpleasant to use when talking on the phone or using it as a camera. The cheap plastic buttons are also difficult to press because of the thinness, are jittery and not very firm, and the power button should be bigger or on the top because I use my phone with either hand and the power button is made for left hand usage only.
If the Vibrant had not wanted to be a me too of the iPhone 4 as far as thinness, it would be much better to hold like the Samsung Wave, which has actual sides (not chrome edges) that are rounded and comfortable to hold, along with a real shutter button. A thicker phone would have also allowed for a bigger battery and better sensor/lens for the camera if they cared to place one, and who knows why they took out the flash beyond just being cheap. It would also help with the toy feel of the phone by adding some weight to that 118g.
When the screen is off, the phone is definitely not a looker, accented with a cheap chrome trim that has been used on old phones for ages. And I've already said enough about the back. I guess you could say the front can look cool if wiped clean and used as a mirror.
For telephony, I can't say much about call reception, but the actual earpiece and speaker isn't very good. The earpiece is muddy and not very loud compared to all my previous phones. The speaker is terrible for placing people on speakerphone, because their voices sound like a garbled mess that goes in and out. Same with using it when someone calls me. The ringtone can't get very loud and has that same garbled mess for sound. I've heard way way better like the stereo speakers on Nokia phones and it seems on par with some of the cheap diminutive fashion candy bars that Sony Ericsson has. I wonder if its the thinness that is making both the earpiece and the speaker sound so bad, or if Samsung has gone cheap again.
I'm not sure what to tell you other than you need to run to the store and swap yours out.
Mine sounds way better than any other phone that I've ever owned.

I think there's something wrong with your phone, bro. I can hear my ringtone very loud and amazingly clear over my car stereo (Pioneer HU, Infinity Reference 6.5", 10" subwoofer w/600w).
I couldn’t care less what the phone looks like. It could have a 'scratch and sniff' picture of a rotting cow covered with maggots on the back. That’s what they make gel covers for! I just want it to have an awesome screen, CPU and GPU. It has all that. Qwerty would have been nice for emulators.

Well the back cover of all phones aint worth a damn. But i dont care because mine ALWAYS have a case of them. I have a skinomi screen protector on it so i dont have any fingerprints. I am right handed and press the power button with my thumb or if its in my left hand i use my index finger. Maybe you need practice. I can care less about how the phone looks when its off.

TMo's reception works fine for me and the comparison between the Evo and the Vibrant stops at they are both Android phones. Vibrant is far better. But to each their own.

might be the phone but, its far to jumpy, i travel between LA and Portland weekly and only get 3g for about 15 minutes in 3 citys in those 1000 miles. hopefully 2.2 fixes some of the issues.
I guess to each his own, but I love this phone. I've had it next to an EVO and even though the Evo's screen was bigger the Galaxy S screen was definitely more vivid.
I hope you're still within the return period...

I wouldnt blame it on Samsung. Since there are many variations to the Galaxy S lineup.
I would blame T-Mobile for ordering a glossy backed phone from Samsung. What Samsung does is they take the order and customize a phone for their customer (T-Mobile) to meet their needs.
Captivate has a different back, Fascinate has a different back, Epic 4G has a different back.
So your argument that it is Samsung's fault for making a bad design decision is fruitless. I like fruit by the way.

The phone is real fast, has all this cool stuff like 4" Super AMOLED, GPS, Wifi, HSPA, 1GHz processor, etc., AND beyond what they list on the spec sheets, there are many great compromises, great design choices, and awesome cost-cutting ideas for the physical portion of the phone and its usability as a "phone" phone. The vibrant as it performs well for a smartphone, but it does'nt bother me that I am sort of upgrading in other respects.

It is basically the entire phone aside from the glass front, and its easy to clean with one swipy. It's also very secure and does not creaks at the edges where it snaps on the side. The way it tapers back like an iPhone 3G and has a thickness of less than 10mm makes it hard to hold my mouth closed in amazement to use when talking on the phone or using it as a camera. The comfortable plastic buttons are also easy to press because of the thinness, are very firm, and the power button should be applauded because I use my phone with either hand and the power button is made for non complainers.
If the Vibrant had not wanted to be a me too (huh?) of the iPhone 4 as far as thinness, it would be much better to hold like the Samsung Wave, which has actual sides (not chrome edges) that are rounded and comfortable to hold, along with a real shutter button. A thicker phone would have also allowed for a bigger battery and better sensor/lens for the camera and also more expensive if they cared to place one, and who knows why they took out the flash beyond just being cheap (the flash that never existed you mean?). It would also be adding some weight to that 118g. but who wants a heavy phone?

Humorous, I find the case of the phone to be a mute point as in my case the phone is sitting snug in a rubber body glove with only the screen exposed. To each his own.

Funny post. Complaint about everything but the GPS. This phone has the biggest capacity battery I have seen for a phone, yet that's too small. The nicest back cover yet. I must be deaf, because I can hear my phone quite well in a 100db engine room. Cheap plastic buttons? There is buttons on this phone? What is he doing, typing the Morse Code on the power button? Or is there some great phone I'm missing?

I know it sounds a little odd, but I kinda wish the phone was a little heavier. When I was holding the Evo yesterday it felt beefy and really solid.
However with that being said, I really like the fact that when I wear cargo shorts and my phone is in my pocket its not cracking me in the knee like my G1 brick used to do.
I guess you have to take the good with the bad and the bad being its rather light I suppose I can live with unless of course I decide later to duct tap some lead to the battery cover.

Everyone here is probably familiar with the DHD speaker volume issue.
The GSM Hero also suffers from a similar problem except that hardly anyone complains because the battery cover acts as a passive diaphragm which amplifies the audio from the tiny speaker. Removing the cover makes the Hero sound just like the DHD.
That got me thinking... a properly designed or modified case may be able to do the same for the DHD that the battery cover does for the Hero.
I'd be interested to hear feedback especially if someone has a DHD case that they think would make a good candidate. Mods might include patching the speaker hole and etching a speaker port.
if you have the design and wanted to make it happen. Why don't you try kickstarter? I am sure there are a lot of DHD owner will support you (if your case really works)
I've experimented with several materials but am unable to reproduce the effect seen on the HTC Hero. My best guess is that the Hero's plastic body transmits speaker vibrations efficiently to the large battery cover diaphragm whereas the DHD's solid unibody construction dampens vibrations needed to produce sound from a case.
Another solution may be to build a larger case with a thin film speaker via the headphone jack. A juice pack and kick stand might be cool too.
Has anyone noticed it is twice as loud when laid on its back on a hard surface, like a table? Probably the same idea of reflected sound that Bose engineers dine out on.

It's made to be placed screen down when using the speaker, for music anyway.
I use Tasker to turn off the notification sounds at night when phone plugged in (so I can sleep).
I too have very low/bad speaker sound but noticed something weird yesterday and today, if I remove the power (therefore automatically reverting notification volume to 100%) BEFORE dismissing the alarm then the alarm temporarily got very much louder (for maybe a second).
This makes me think the issue is actually software/firmware, particularly as some people seem to think the speak volume is OK. I've tried turning off pocket mode etc, so far no good
Yes, I too observed the same. if i start any game, the initial sound for may be 2 secs is very louder and then fades away to usual self. It might be a firmware issue, but no one from HTC seems to be acknowledging this or trying to provide a fix.
This hasn't got anything to do with the 'make my phone louder when it's in my pocket ' setting has it? Perhaps it knows its on your desk so doesn't crank up the volume?

Just thought I'd add that I've been watching videos in bed lately. I prop it up by making a dip in the covers, which bounces the sound back. The sound, especially in dolby, goes from being awful to being really good. In fact I find it better than putting it on a hard surface...

Hey there, I got my Nexus 10 today and I'm overall pleased with the device but something caught my attention and I was hoping that other Nexus 10 owners would help me. The device is fairly big and seemed to have large speakers at both the left and right, but I noticed that when I play music or watch something sound only comes out from the top of the speakers. So what, is the large speaker look just for show or is there a problem with my tablet? I'd appreciate any answers
I think it's just for show. Pretty sure the "actual" speaker area is 2 small "squares" at the top corners of the device. Not entirely sure if sound is supposed to travel through the entire speaker area on the sides of the tablet or not though, but it doesn't seem like it does :/

Sound doesnt just bend and get routed all throughout the speaker grill, that's not how sound waves work.To do something like this would be massively complicated to do and probably sound terrible. The only practical way to do it would be to use 3-5 speaker drivers per side. and actually have speakers all throughout the grill that you see.

Thanks for the information. But the question wasn't how it would be practical but how it is right now and unfortunatly I hear no sound comming out from the whole speaker grill, only the tops.

Thanks for the reply, that helped ease my worries a bit. I'm probably gonna wait for a few more replies until I'll be 100% sure about this.
Yeah, played some music and the sound is coming from the top corners.
Ya, speakers only on the top, similar to the Gnote 10.1. The guys at Powerbookmedic did a full tear down, and posted photos as they removed each part. The photos show what the speakers look like in the inside.
You can muffle the speakers quite a bit if you cover the top of the grill with your thumb, but anywhere else, it sound is unaffected.

I have the same issue where only sound is produced from top right and left corner of the tab. Spoke to the google customer service and they state that this is a defect. Can anyone please confirm if you are able to here sound from all ends. Thanks.
The speakers we see are indeed for show. The actual speaker is just a square at the top. Somewhere on here there's a picture of the internal components of the N10. If I find it I'll post a link.

Wow. I knew they were at the top but I did not think that was where the speakers were located. Those aren't even in the area of the grills...
Not complaining though. I still think the sound on this device is just fine for my taste.
How loud is the sound outputted? I'm coming from Asus tf700 and the sounds so weedy on that tab - any better?
Yes, it's much better than the TF700t. I had to use equilizer on the TF to get decent out. The N10 is much better right out of the box. No apps needed.

As there is no similar topic specially for Loudspeaker I decided to create one.
I like the speakers of the phone sound good and bassy.
Although I had to replace the speakers (repair),
(cuz it got low by it self (hardware defect))
But I noticed the bottom speaker is thinner and more high frequency specialized in the other side the top speaker for low frequency (bass)
Idk if it is hardware fault or it is designed by Sony,
I want to know your thoughts abt the loudspeakers ?
I don't know about Z3, but in the Z2 the top speaker is more clear than the bottom one. I think it's probably some kind of technology. But in the other side, if you're watching a film in horizontal direction, you can hear that everything is happening on the left side and that's annoying.
if the phone gets wet especially the loudspeaker area the loudspeakers stop making sound and thd sound is emitted from some sort of loudspeakers internal to the phone which appears the be louder from the back of the phone.
i listen music in the shower, so thats how i found out. though it was interesting to share

That's kind of weird, my neighbor have the Z2 and he never had such problem, are you sure it's not hardware fault? If my neighbor find such problems he directly comes to me to ask me what's this etc, but I know he don't have this problem cuz u also use his phone to compare etc, so I guess for you its a hardware fault maybe?

Yeah I also listen to music when I shower and I can confirm that,
oh no dont get me wrong it's not a complaint, im suprised the phone knows when its wet enough to stop the loudspeaker, its a good thing =)

Hmm maybe the speakers feel pressure when it gets wet and it shows the volume down / stops the speakers ?
As an audiophile I will say that as a Mobile Loudspeaker it is quite good. Compared to anything else though it is still a low sound quality speaker.
But as a mobile speaker though, it is very good. It is loud, clear and doesn't "break up" that much. It got some bass, but not much.
I think it sounds better with the surround function on. :good:
Its pretty good, but not near the M8. Id say second best of any phone out. I don't get the left/right mismatch many of you have mentioned., I have been through 4 Z3s for cosmetic defects and all sound equal. Maybe its a quality control issue or I have bad ears.
When I go into the service menu and do a test of the speakers, I get the sound coming out of the top/left speaker on both. What's going on there? There is perhaps some sound coming out of the bottom/right but it's tiny in comparison.
