So I just checked my account to see my data usage and I have used 230MB in just 8 days.
The strange thing is, I really haven't been using it much on the go except for exchange email.
Whenever I download apps I make sure the Wifi is on.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Have you checked any apps you've installed. Maybe one of them is using your data connection ALOT. Also, you can turn the data connection off (I think) Under "All Apps > Settings > Cellular > Data connection slider. I think that turns it off. You can also set the Phone updates to only use Wi-Fi. "Settings > Updates? > uncheck use data connection.
I didn't even think about that.
I uninstalled a weather app that I had (and rarely use actually).
I also unchecked the updated over cellular option.
It got me thinking and I looked through the other options and noticed "Feedback" was turned on and checked to use cellular data.
Thanks for the tips, hopefully that will stop the data monster.

I've had the same problem with data being UPLOADED to my carrier without my knowledge and I dont use email or messaging and have only downloaded thru marketplace when i am connect via WiFi. It's not the feedback option becasue I've had that turned off. Something is causing this on my HTC Surround. Spent some time with AT&T tech support and they don't know yet either. In a short amount of time 60 MB of data was uploaded for which I am charged. 99% of the time I am connected via WiFi. If you turn OFF data, located under settings/cellular, it will stop this from happening. You can leave data turned off and still use your Wifi. So DATA refers to info being sent or download thru your cellular network, not Wifi. The tech guy thought that maybe the data was being sent during brief periods when the Wifi connection dropped which is possible so leaving the DATA setting off will prevent that from happening. If anyone figures out which app is responsible please post here.

I just unchecked both options under updates too though I dont see how checking for phone updates could use so much data.
There are a few things that may use up so much data. Many applications, such as weather apps or news apps as mentioned, use a lot of data if left unchecked. Also, turn off the feedback option at the bottom of the settings menu, as that can send quite a bit of megabytes flying in the air, especially overnight. Bing maps, as well as the "find my phone" applications use data as well, and the severity of the uploads can be lessened if you turn it off or do not turn on the constant check....

My phone constantly transfers data eating up the battery. I manually turn off data on the comm page. It stays off briefly then begins again. Any ideas?
Try this file, unzip, transfer over, install, open NO GPRS from the programs menu and hit toggle.
That should do it, just hit toggle to re-enable.
This is posted elsewhere, try using search first.
go to activesync, menu->schedule
and set "peak times" and "off-peak times" to "manually"
I once had this when I had an MMS trying to download. Delete the MMS header from your mailbox or specify the network/connection which should be used for downloading MMS.

Check the MMS...
But the big question is... do you have push mail or perhaps a weather program?
Push especially will keep your data connection on as it is constantly polling your email...
The good news is if your are connected it doesn't necessarily mean that you are using data. If you are in a 3G area then an H icon will appear instead of the 3G icon while there is a data transfer...
If you want to stop it alltogether check out MoDaCo's NoData or the GRPS above..

I have my personal email on 30 minute retrieve increments other than that I have no other data services. My phone is just on this constant data call although no data is being transferred. This subsequently drains my battery awefully fast.

More details.
The phone is engaged in a constant data call represented by 3G with the left and right arrow, however, no data is actually being transferred. The battery is draining within 8hrs on standby because the high transmit to receive ratio. Although no data is transferred the radio constantly interrogates the cell site thus throwing out unnecessary power. If I manually disengage via the communication manager, the phone will hang up the data call for a brief period, but will reengage fairly quickly. I can't find any settings that would create this situation. I downloaded the program in this post, but the phone still continues the data call. This has never happened on this phone until a month or so after installing the ROM flash with WM6, but I can't be sure if there is a direct correlation with the new flash. Thank you all for your help.

try turning off this 30 min email and make it manual to see if this is the cause...
not sure if u have htchome weather, because it will also auto update every few hours...

have you checked the activesync schedule time?
furthermore goto commmanager and disable direct push. if your commmanager does not show you the icon to disable direct push, install schaps advanced config and activate there the icon.
i am pretty sure that one of these two options causes the problem.
what other apps have you installed?
if all this does not help, hard reset your device and install/config one app after another.

I've got the same problem. I'm using the default HTC WWE ROM. At random times, sometimes twice a day, my "Rogers Internet" data connection (GPRS, EDGE or 3G) connects automatically and doesn't disconnect. If I catch it happening and click cancel, it tries again. It will not give up until the connection has been established for at least 10 seconds.
I've gone through every program I have, checking to make sure the auto update option is disabled (if there is an auto update). I do not use the direct push and therefore, activesync schedule is greyed out.
Any ideas?
I'm suprised that it drains your battery so quickly. My phone stays connected at least 90% of the day, and I usually have at least 70-80% battery when I get home from work, usually more. The only time that it gets drained quickly is when I'm browsing the web too much on NetFront 3.5...a notorious battery drainer.
Sorry I couldn't help...but maybe it's a battery issue? Since I'm connected so much and have no battery issues? Or maybe a radio change could help you?
I don't have any abnormal battery drain, just weird auto-connect problem.
are you sure you have checked every single program? there has to be something that's trying to connect to the internet to grab data. weather apps, time sync, quickgps (i know, ridiculous, i'm just throwing it out there). try looking at what processes are running in the background using a task manager. that might help you eliminate suspects.
I have Spb GPRS Monitor on my phone. I've been looking at the logs. There is no pattern to the connections and they seem to be never more than 20k connections. I've installed NoGPRS and will use that while I'm sleeping. Just weird that it connects at all.
I had a similar problem, so I installed KaiserTweak and changed the setting to disconnect from 3G after use and that did the trick for me - no more constant connection and the battery stopped heating up and dying quickly.
I have noticed my Xperia has turned on the data connection a few times without me requesting it to. I was not doing anything, so hopefuly i will not be charged (i don't have any web usage in my contract).
Is there anything i can install that will password protect the data connection or at least stop it acciedently turning on?
Had the same with my Prophet - in the end I installed SPB GPRS Monitor which gave me an idea of how much it used (could also set it to warn you when it went over limits, cut connection I think, etc)
Next to that, whenever I wanted to disable it (e.g. roaming, etc) I changed the networks used (settings-->connections-->select networks) to something without settings, that way programs that connected automatically didn't find the right settings and couldn't connect (for when the phone was in my pocket etc).
Not sure if there is an app available now to PW protect the data connection - been on an unlimited plan for a while now (internet/rss feeds etc).
I had a similar issue until my data plan became active.
There's a free program on the modaco website called nodata that allows you to turn off/on the data connections when needed. It worked very well whilst I was using it.

Was having a debate elsewhere and a few of us have realised, that we are not actually sure what this does and if really required?
I turned mine off a while back for example and my widgets would still update as I wanted and I still received emails etc.
Therefore can anyone actually explain what "Always on Internet" is actual for?
I read a somewhere on Google that the G1 users in the past who used the "Always on" option, found that when they went abroad, they were getting charged a fortune in roaming charges. Is this a sneaky reason for it being included maybe?
There's another setting which enables / disables data whilst roaming.
Personally I have found that it is better to have the Internet Always on as it is quicker for any app to use the data connection. With it off, sometimes apps failed but since enabling it again, no probs

I think what the option does is leave the 3G or whatever connected so that when apps need it your phone doesn't need to reconnect each time.
Without it checked i imagine apps will connect the 3G, download the data they need, then disconnect the 3G connection.
Makes sense anyway, ive never had it off.
If you turn on the always on internet, your device will stay connected to the intenet so you dont have to keep connecting, if you turn it on, you can still connect to the internet when needed but it will turn it back off after x amount of minutes idle i think lol

I have been using HD2 for a week now and I have noticed that the data connection with my mobile operator (O2 UK) starts automatically each time.
I notice this when I see the 3G or H or E symbol on top, then I have to go to data connection and switch it off.
If I call someone, hang the phone down and then lock it and if I unlock the phone after sometime I see the data connection turned on again.
Anyone know why this happens? Is there any way I can only turn it on when I want it and not all the time? I keep my wifi connected when I am at home.
As far as I know the apps I have are configured to not connect automatically...
metal675, couple of places to check. On your device, open activesync->menu->schedule and make sure the schedule for both peak and off peak times is set to manual. Next, go to the settings tab in manila and select location and untick HTC location service. Not sure if you've already done these or not, but these are the two things I know. Hope that helps.

Also deactivate everything in data services.
If deactivating everything wont help, please check if you closed Palringo properly (if you use it at all). Had the same problem and couldn`t figure it out - which process is turning 3G on itself. Found Palringo making problem. Closing by X doesn`t help (even when it`s not in ComManager). You have to close it by Menu>Exit to make sure.

You can also try deactivating data connections using bsbtweaks. It's an option which should prevent your device from automatically connecting whenever it pleases.

I think it was the location service which did the trick. I had missed that one.
Had switched off automatic update setting for all the other apps. Looks like it is working now and I dont see data connection being started now.
if your planning on using the data services alot then it might be worth getting the unlimited data/internet bolt on for £7.50 that way you dont have to worry about it, thats what i do. keeps me updated on twitter, facebook and handy for the weather as well

Dont want my usage to be exhausted when I am not using the phone...I would rather prefer to use the internet when I need it for FB, twitter, weather etc
I am not sure if this is even a problem, but before today my data connection to t-mobile would only connect when needed. For instance, if I was home then I would be connected to wifi and my data connection would turn off by itself, but would still connect if needed by a program, or whatever, that can't use wifi but needed the data connection instead. Like when I sent a MMS message for example. Then after the message was sent or whenever the program was done with the data connection then it would automatically disconnect where I would continue to use the wifi connection. Also, if I left the house then I would automatically be switched to the data connection as the wifi signal went out of range.
This is the way I liked it. Today it had changed the way it behaves. Now, the data connection stays on no matter what and I have to manually turn it off in the comm manager. Also, everytime the screen turns off and the device goes into sleep mode, or whatever you call it, the data connection automatically turns backs on while it is sleeping. For example, when I go to sleep I press the red hang up button to put it in sleep mode then I go to sleep. When I wake up in the morning the data connection is on and when I go to turn it off it shows it has been connected for however long I was asleep for.
Like I said I am not sure if this is a big deal or not, I just don't want to be charged for going over the data cap for some reason. And I am not sure if maybe there is a program in the background that might not be showing up in the task manager and is downloading data that will eventually cost me when it goes over the cap.
Now I know that certain things automatically connect to download data like mail, weather, stocks, twitter, etc., but I always thought that they could use a wifi connection if available. And if not then I know for sure that it used to at least disconnect the data connection after it was done.
I am basically asking if this is normal because it used to not be like this on my phone and if it is something I need to.be worried about? Also, if anyone knows how to change it back to the way it used to be? I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know how to do it.

All I want to know is if it is normal to always have the data connection on. So does anyone else experience this? The data connection seems to reconnect by itself everytime the phone goes in standby and stays connected until I manually disconnect it.

Hey I just happen to have similar problem with the data connection turning on by itself when I check email on my wifi.
If you goto comm manager - menu - connections - advanced
Under "select which networks are automatically" - select networks
Change the connection type under "programs that automatically connect to the internet..." to your wifi connection from "t-mobile data."
Seems to work for me at the moment anyways. It's not connecting automatically to data connection when I check my emails.

It's actually the default behavior for the data connection to stay on once it's activated, until it's switched off manually. You won't pass significantly more data that way than if you just turned it off right after whatever app(s) are doing using it...the only downside to leaving it on is the speed at which it drains the battery.
There are some users who choose to leave it on, just to avoid the delay when they want to use it, and there's probably tons more who don't even have any idea you might want to turn it off when not in use.
Now I could swear there's a cab floating around here somewhere that will shut off the data connection once it sits idle for 60 seconds, but I didn't turn it up in a casual search the other day, so I can't point you to it right now
As for the apps using wifi when it's available instead of calling up a data connection, every one you mentioned should do that, and those all behave that way for me...so maybe there's something else you haven't thought of yet that ignores wifi when it connects to update or whatever. I would start by turning off auto updating for any and all of those services you listed, and see if the issue persists. If so, you'll need to dig deeper to find the culprit. Do you have microsoft myphone connecting to backup maybe? That seems to ignore wifi on my phone, I'm sure there's other apps that do as well.
Today it actually quit doing it for some reason. So I have no idea why it did that for awhile. Now I read that some people were having the opposite problem, which was that they couldn't get their connection to stay on. Now, this is actually the way I want it. Oh well, I hope it stays this way now.
