[Q] No Internet over 3g and Edge but with Wlan - Trophy General

hi,
I`v bought my HTC Trophy this week over ebay from Austria (I live in Germany) and it arrived yesterday
Last night I startet to configure my new phone and did all over wlan cause of the speed, everything worked fine. But this morning at the trainstation I tried to surf over 3g and Edge but it couldn't load any page or make anny connection to the Internet. But the mysterious was it showed me in the left upper corner the connection as 3g. It didn`t worked for me since then but wlan is working fine.
I also tried to reset, reboot, change every option nothing helped...
Is anyone having any Ideas how to fix this error or how to handle it??
thx

is it possible that you have an branded device?
I got mine through vodafone, but i'm using Hi (kpn)
To make my internet connection work, i had to manually add an apn.
The 3g logo could be there to let you know there is an 3g network available.
you could also try htc connection setup (to be found in the marketplace) to setup your setting.

thx you man you`ve made my day!
You where absolutly right, I had to add the tmobile apn by hand and it worked right in the same moment.
For anyone who has the same problem:
go to Settings>mobile communications and click on edit APN and enter your APN data manualy you will have to search the internet for this data or call your provider.

Thank you, guys!
I don't like very much my new Trophy anyway (I have a HD2 ...) but without internet connection it was orrible!

Additionally if you go to marketplace - HTC Apps and then select Connection Setup you will have the opportunity to do this automatically.

Orange 3G - stopping GPRS ?

Hi
Just got an Orange 3G. One annoying feature is that if it drops a WiFi connection it goes automatically to using GPRS without any indication (which thens starts to cost !!!)
Orange say you can't stop this happening. Does anyone know any trick to stop this (there is no way to keep the GPRS off as there was on my old Touch)
Be grateful for any help
As I said to the person who asked the same question a few days ago *sigh*, google nodata

You need to check how your phone is connecting.
AFAIK the orange ROM uses the unique manager not the normal HTC connection manager.
This means you dont really have a WiFi connection. Orange unique is their VOIP(??) implementation.
If you have a livebox and orange as your ISP your phone will automatically switch to using your WiFi connection for phone calls saving you money, the downside is you cant use wifi for anything else.
The only way to sort it is buy flashing a different ROM.
Orange Unique ----http://www.business.orange.co.uk/services/broadband/unique-for-business/
Hi
Thanks for the info. Been trying to sort out with Orange and same answer - disable GPRS and the WiFi stops as well !!! (One of the Orange guys even admitted that it was because they don't make money on voice now, only data). The 'nodata' fix doesn't work as it also stops the WiFi. Any thoughts on which ROM I might flash?
Thanks for your help
I'm actually an Orange employee, working for Handset Faults, and looking to solve this for a customer.
There is a rom update available from HTC, which apparently fixes this, however the customer I'm trying to resolve this for, has tried updating and his serial number shows as no available ROM.
I don't think the No-data resolution will work, so hoping if theres any other solutions you guys could suggest?
I know on my current HS, which is a Hermes, I've the communication manager, which i believe isn't available on the Touch 3G, unless debranded.
Really, I'm just trying to get more advice, so would appreciate anyone's tried and tested work-around, as i've to call said customer back tomorrow, with hopefully a resolution, but if not, then he'll have to wait till a ROM update becomes available from HTC/Orange for branded handsets.
I found a solution to this problem last night that works for me on my Touch 3G with Orange.
Enter Unique Manager - Advanced Settings - Network Adapter - My Network Card Connects to - and ensure they're all set to connect to The Internet.
I have also setup a Block GPRS connection under Settings - Connections - Conections which stop GPRS connecting and can now connect via Wifi no problem.

Thanks for this - going to give it a try but when i go into Settings - Connections for the second part of your fix, where do I go next (I can't find Conections which stop GPRS connecting)
Thanks
Thanks Bob,
Will copy this and put it on my phone somehow!
Thank you very much for the advice!

Did you manage to make it work?

Unfortunately, the customer cancelled their upgrade and got another handset before trying this.
Shame really!
Thanks for the help though!

Still haven't been able to work out the second part of the fix - can you help?
Thanks
I've no suggestions tbh, cause I don't own a Touch 3G, I personally run a Hermes.
I'm actually trying to follow this up, and check what Bob meant by blocking GPRS on it.
Also, would you chaps be so kind to advise me if GPS under the HTC Touch 3G uses GPRS to connect, or does it use Satelittes like a normal GPS?
Just another question my customer asked today.
Thank you,

The GPS will use the satelitte to get a signal (just like proper SatNavs), but if there's an A-GPS feature, it will use a tiny bit of GPRS to speed up the process.
It'll then use the GPRS (if enabled) to download maps for the local area if it there isn't a map already installed on the handset.
That's why it's always a good idea to disable GPRS when roaming, at £8/mb- it's a pricey thing to use.
However, you can normaly download maps using WiFi before you leave (if you know where you'll be going), which will save time and money on using the network for data.
I get asked that question alot too (I work for them too, in NT1- First Impressions)
It will use the GPRS for the GPS locator if you leave A-GPS selected. Fortunately you can disable A-GPS to stop this happening.
Interestingly, I can't find any real difference in the speed of 'finding' satalites between standard GPS and A-GPS.
Thanks for the advice guys.
So any ideas how to fully block GPRS traffic outgoing, unless wanted? So its WIFI only when my customer is at home?
No further movement on this one...
Anyone got any ideas, how to utilise the WIFI facility switching the Unique Phone part off, and blocking GPRS traffic?
Thank you,
NoData works on fone.......BUT
Hi I got my touch 3g couple days ago its on orange contract brilliant fone apart from cannot connect to wifi as you all know it still connects thru gprs so I downloaded Nodata installed on fone disabled gprs with it. So good so far switched on wifi thru unique manager then checked that data connection was still off and it was BRILLIANT I shouted.
My wifi was connected to my hub and data connection was off woo hoo
Started web browser and lo an behold Get the message "cannot connect with current connection settings"
As far as I am led to believe at the present time there is no way round this problem apart from installing a clean version of windows but if I am mistaken please tell me how to get around this problem.
Cheers Biggles
HTC touch Dual An a HTC touch 3G
I have the Touch 3g with Orange - but thanks to the guys on this forum I got rid of the Orange branding/mess by using a 'stock' rom and I am not now using Orange Unique. Then I did the following........but not sure if it works with the Orange Unique stuff.
As far I as I can see there is no explict way of turning GPRS off - if it is set up then it will connect to it when a program requests data. I have unlimited internet on my home network but I need to turn GPRS off when roaming abroad so I don't get charged silly amounts.
I found that the only way I can guarantee to stop the phone using GPRS is to change the name of the Access Point Name - then it cannot connect to the service. On my phone (a Touch 3g) it is under Settings, Connections, Connections, Manage Existing Connections - then edit the connection details. On mine it is Orange Internet - so edit this and get to the Access Point Name - which is orangeinternet in my case - i just take away a few letters at the end and save the settings.
At this point GPRS will not work because the Access Point Name is not correct and you will get a message from any program trying to access the internet if wifi is not enabled. To get it to work again just edit the Access Point Name back to what it was. In my case I do not have to switch the phone off/on - I can just change the Access Point Name at anytime and it works or dosn't as I require.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
With Orange Unique there isn't any "Manage Existing Connections" that I can find - just addding new modem or VPN? Am I in the right place?
Thanks
for the benefit of people who may be subscribed to this thread, I think I have found a fix for the orange rom using data connection instead of wifi, read on here:-

post back to that thread if it works for you!

Google account connection / Market connection

Ok, I prolly worked myself in to some troubles. The htc hero was launched 2 days ago in netherlands...but was delayed in belgium for another week.
This for the youtube application that cannot exist on the htc hero for Belgium.
So I just went to netherland and bought a htc hero with the youtube application.
After playing with the htc hero I marked a quite big problem
1) I cannot connect to my google email.
With that I cannot connect to the andriod market for apps etc...
Could this be because I'm using my phone in Belgium? Where actually you should have a other phone? I remember reading something about regioblock?
Someone with info/solutions?
I've got the same problem with my Dutch Hero, but I live in the Netherlands (Vodafone NL)
edit : Tried to add hotmail manually (true email apps) works
edit : tried to add gmail manually (true email apps) works!
connecting before market...fails
check in settings > wireless > mobile networks > access point names
select the one for your network and check to make sure there is no proxy listed.
make sure it is just PROXY that you delete, and not MMS PROXY, as otherwise your MMS will stop working.
hopefully that will help.
I get the feeling that some of this stufff i blocked by the network proxies the same as MSN and youtube are blocked by proxies on WinMo handsets.

No I saw that more ppl have this problem.
It's not connecting using UMTS or WiFi, so it's not a network problem, it's a Hero problem.

Their was only the base mobile internet (gprs.base.be) and base MMS.
The base mobile internet was not marked on,so I did that but stil not working...
Just reset your phone to fabric settings and fill in your gmail account when the phone bootes (in the phone setup wizard) and everything will work fine.
Shut down the phone and press home button + back button + power button to start the reset, follow the screen for insructions.
They told me you have to have connection true 3g with your sim card...
To make the first connection you need this and no wifi...
I copy from the android forum :
I'll say it again.
You CAN'T set up Google Sync through an unprovisioned data package.
Now I though you could use wifi to set it up but you can't. You HAVE to set up Google Sync through 3G and it has to be through a Mobile Internet add-on!
Once set up you can use wifi/2g/3g/hsdpa
I know it doesnt make any sense but Google Sync doesn't use WiFi for the first set up and the Service Provider blocks Google Unless you use one of their data tariffs... Really Google should be provisioned to set up through wifi but probably part of this anti piracy malarky...
Yet again awsome phone, shockingly bad service providers.
Just wait till the data is provisioned and restart your phone. No luck then reset to factory defaults and try again.
(I had to do the same thing)
I had problems with connecting to Market then I did a hard reset on the phone and setup google account during initial wizard and it worked ok.
If your 3g network has restrictions you can always try wi-fi at your local hotspot
I still can't get wifi to provide a data connection, has to bephone network. Have tried several factory reboots :-(
if you are willing to experiment you could maybe flash your hero with WWE R3 rom release (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533808)
However, be prepared to accept the fact that USB might not work until newer edition of ROM is available
not sure i believe that, as i have one at work and have signed in multiple times to google after a hard reset without a sim even being in the phone!
It even asks you if you want to use Wifi during the intial start up process, so it definitely CAN use the wifi for the initial set up, or at least the one we have here can!
just received hero and this misfunctionality is really irritating.
Does anybody knows how to reinstall this applications new?
it should be gmail, market and gtalk.
thanks in advance-
very odd.
Had a friend in NL that had this problem, but when we looked, it turned out that only the Vodafone MMS APNs had been set up (or were the only ones visible) and creating one manualy fixed the problem. He didn't have WiFi to try with at the time.
it was very strange as again, he could browse over 3G!
just checked....the settings are OK: Vodafone IT, but still can not get in.
tried also without a sim, only wifi, same result no connection...
should i really reset it? any other ideas?
thx in advance
I did the reset....
I made sure I was directly at my wifi spot...connected to gmail went ok...market now works perfectly...
Strange tho...
could there be some sort of automatic check in with the google servers the first time the handset is ever turned on? maybe if that fails, it could be linked?
reset, first config done, now it works great, some things are real mistery....
thanks to all
hi guys
i dont know if this the right pleace to ask but
does the hero have AUTO SETUP CONNECTION ??
that when you first time put a sim card or go to other network the phone auto setup your data connection . like htc diamond
I guess the network branded ones may not, but the unbranded one i have been using at work certainly does.

internet access problem

Hello there, i finally got a 3g sim(by TIM Italy) for my topaz..i use it as a modem for my laptop and it works very well..but i don't have internet when i use the phone standalone Any clues?? I used the automatic config and i got a correct connection, in fact whe i want to update weather for example icons on the top bar start to change as if the data connection was correctly invoked..but i get a connection error pretty soon, same for Youtube or opera!!please help
hello,
I have a different problem. My sim card was broken so i got a new one.
I have the 3G account but i'm unable to see the 3G sym. Allways the E is shown.
How can i get the 3G symbol?
Check that use proxy is not enabled in connection setings for your internet.

Thanks for your reply. I tried but when i unchecked the "use proxy" thing, WM is re checking it again.
Maybe there is something in the band settings that i miss.
@opensea: i'm afraid pa49 was answering to my thread, your problem could depend on the coverage in your area.
@pa49: if your answer was for me i checked that, thanks anyway.
Ok, now i know it can work flawlessly doing a hardreset, so my fault..will have to put all the stuff (well not all,i guess) again. But gosh do i have to check if it works even if i put stuff like tomtom or sportypal back on? I'm sure it's either HDTweak or AndvancedConfig, i unistalled them but no use. I guess they leave "bad" settings for my purpose even if unistalled.
Well, bye

help please, connection data plan

hi guys. i have one big problem, my opera, nimbuzz and others aren't connecting on edge, 3g or hsdpa, while internet explorer, weather have no problem at all. at home on wifi there is no problem, but that is all about , portability, no? i do have a data plan, and i haven't got this problem on my topaz. i'm on orange romania, and orange guys give me some bull**** theory that i need fixed not dynamic ip, witch is payd. can someone please help me with that?
Had similar problems in the past and it was the "connection setup" sending me through a t-mobile proxy rather than "straight out"...
Try:
Settings / Wireless Controls / Menu / Connections / "Set up my Proxy Server"
Remove the tick box next to the proxy server and ok the screens - has worked for me in the past (i'm on t-mobile UK).
Just in case make a note of the proxy settings so you can put them back if you have too !!!
A bit off topic, but does anybody know how to disable 3g connection on the HD2. There's no slider in the comm manager like I had on my diamond.
Would it be possible to install a different comm manager.
still not
thanks for advice, but tried that and still nothing. very weird, opera mini works over edge
3g
there is for above question about 3g a prog commanager8 or something like that enables you 8 tabs in wireless manager, including 3g one
go to settings>connections>advanced network> and then choose the GPRS tab and choose either pap or chap. it might work that way.
no luck
no luck this way either. i don't know what this could be. i forgot to mention that i bought my hd2 from expansys uk, but i don't think this could cause a problem using it in romania, it is unlocked from carrier

[Q] HD2 T-mobile UK settings help

I've got a Hd2 which is having a few problem connecting to the Internet. The phone was originally on Virgin network in the UK (which is essentially piggybacked on the T-Mobile network but uses different APN settings) and now I've unlocked it to run on T-Mobile UK. I've never been able to send mms's, but have been able to receive them in the past.
That was until my brother came along and in his infinite wisdom thought he could fix that and now all my Internet settings have gone. I've tried countless times to send them from the T-Mobile website and no joy, cannot download the settings.
SO now I turn to you fine gents and ladies to help me get my phone back on the Intternet please! I basically need to start it from scratch with manual settings I think but if anyone has any other suggestions please go ahead.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Hi mate, what you need to do is:
In Manilla goto the settings tab > Menu > All Settings.
This brings up the standard WM Settings screen.
Then goto Connections > Connection Setup and select your country and operator then click OK.
If it doesnt work then make sure you are connected to a WI-Fi connection then try again.
Then when youve successfully done this, close Connection Setup and you will be returned to the Connections screen.
Now Click Connections icon and where it says: T-Mobile Internet or Web/walk etc, Click the blue link called: Edit my proxy server.
Now uncheck the checkbox that says: This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. (This has to be done otherwise Windows Live and Messenger wont connect.)
And you are done!
Thanks a lot, got it all sorted now
