Considering trading in my Nexus One with T-Mobile for an EVO with Sprint mainly becuase I'm sick of always being on edge with T-Mobile but I will be highly dissapointed if I face the same situation with Sprint. Anyone have experience with Sprint in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area? Is 3g coverage pretty consistent or will I contantly be forced down to 2g like I currently am with T-Mobile?

sprint is great in miami/broward i never have connection problems, i have only ever had problems inside my actual home because of the postions of the towers in relation to my actual house, but every where else i have between 3-5 bars, and when i use to work at dolphin stadium all the way on the bottom floor i had full signal so yeah.
sprint is great in miami/broward..and i agree t-mobile is pretty slow for us
S Fl is one of Sprint's strongest markets. I was in Hollywood/Pembroke, and got nothing but great signal from there up to Jupiter.
Sprint on average is very strong in florida. I wouldn't worry.

..that being said, I can't get a single bar of coverage inside this house. Getting an Airave delivered to solve that problem. Make sure you test whether you'll really get good reception in the area where you live, because I'm supposedly right across the street from one of Sprint's towers.
Sprint in my opinion, has better coverage on 3G in S. Florida than at&t and all their hype. I moved from at&t back to Sprint and gave up my iPhone because the service from at&t was so bad. With Sprint, I can be anywhere and I always get my calls and the voice clarity is second to none. Don't hesitate to switch to Sprint. If you can't get good signal in your home, you can buy a femtocell from Sprint that hooks into your Broadband and you get a solid signal. They'll help you out. It's not the Sprint it used to be years ago, that's for sure.

I live in Miramar too, and so far the only black spot is in my kitchen, lol other than that is perfect.

Crap, are you serious? On a side note I had my phones activated and delivered from Wirefly; do you think a PRL update would resolve this coverage problem?

I don't know man, since i flash android in my vogue, i haven't got in roaming anymore.
my mom lives in goulds (aka cutler ridge), i live in hollywood, go to school in boca, and work in miramar. not a single problem theres a single dead spot on 175 and weston for like 10 seconds lol but thats about it. ive driven to orlando and tampa nothing! my at&t phone tends to drop signal like crazy when i travel. and if your buying your phone from sprint pm me go to my damn store lol
Thanks for the info everyone. I went ahead and pre-ordered from Sprint's employee program (Save 10 bucks a month that way). Just got off the phone with the girl, looks like I most likely won't get the phone until Saturday unless Sprint decides to ship the phone early, crossing my fingers but not getting my hopes up on that one LOL
4g will be nice but I will be happy if I can just stay connected to 3g and not constantly be forced onto the older 2g/edge service like is constantly happening to me on T-Mobile.

I actually heard a rumor a good chunk of FL gets 4g come the first half of next year. Heard from a sprint rep that could actually count higher than 12.
So the magic question is when will Sprint light up the 4G towers in Miami? Do we really have to wait until next year? If so then it makes little sense for me to jump to Sprint now. Atleast in the North Miami/Aventura area, the 3g signal/downloads speeds were pretty bad compared to Verizon/ATT. This was using a Sprint Express card for notebook.
Though I think the Fascinate looks better and has a camera flash, the Vibrant seems to look better on paper: More on-board memory, HSDPA offers "potentially" fasters data speeds, Tmo can do voice and data at the same time while Verizon can't, no Bing or VZ apps on the Vibrant, and I can buy the phone out of contract at a reduced rate.
The only thing that makes me hesitate (besides the less-appealing design), is Tmo's coverage vs. Verizon. I'm primarily in L.A. / I.E. and do some occasional traveling, and have no experience with Tmo service. Should I be concerned or just make the jump?
i can't speak for 3G coverage on Tmo vs Verizon but can on voice call svc
Tmo seems to have partnered with every small carrier around the country - every year i make about 5-6 visits to clients or suppliers around the country with two other folks from partner companies - one is on AT&T and one on Verizon - and every time we're in a rural area, their svc drops out before my Tmo's does
Last Dec we were heading south out of derby, VT ((on the canadian border) and about 35 miles south you're heading into foothills - my bud with verizon lost his svc, and had to use my phone for about 20 minutes (my tmo was showing 1 bar signal) - he finished his call and about 5 minutes were were i the hills with no signal
when we started coming out of the foothills (they were really mountains but we were gaining elevation with numerous small rock outcroppings around us), anyway, when we started coming out, my Tmo was first to have svc again
they always notice my Tmo's svc is better than their's
and there's no roaming chgs with Tmo here in US or at least i've never had any
have had similiar experiences traveling thru rural S. Carolina, Georgia, Tenn, W VA, Kentucky and western TX and thru New Mexico
nice info above.. but yes.. T-Mobile is GSM/W-CDMA/UMTS/HSPA+ so u can talk-n-surf over 3G (21HSPA+).. also, our speeds dominates all US carriers (even Sprints 4G/WiMax).. T-Mobile will upgrade its HSPA+ data again in 2011 from 21mbps to 42mbps.. i live in Seattle and we have 21HSPA+, but real world results will be between 5-10mbps (also depending on your device limitation).. also, T-Mobile gives u more bang for your buck.. but yes, they do have a smaller foorprint (mainly in more rural areas).. no problem for me since i stay in cities, and not in the boonies.
Even tho Verizon ADDED flash, it gimped its I.M. to 2GB (also no FFC--only Sprint has FFC).. T-Mobile even packed the Vibrant with a few goodies like the movie Avatar.
The Los Angeles and Inland Empire area have good 3G coverage from what I hear. HSPA+ is growing too. 3G coverage when traveling won't be like Verizon so I would check to see if 3G coverage overall is good enough for you.

I live down in the high desert, and travel all the time between here and L.A. and San Diego, and have excellent coverage all over the I.E./L.A./San Diego area. So I don't think you have much to fear with transferring over to tmo

Before you do, find out from people using T-Mobile in the areas that you frequent how their reception is. I love T-Mobile. Their CS rocks and prices are very good, but I couldn't get reception at my desk in my office in Manhattan and had to switch. It's great that it works 35 miles from the Canadian border, but if it doesn't work where you need it, it doesn't work.

When was that and with what phone? T-Mobile is extremely good in Los Angeles, I don't think you know how good they are out there. There will be weak zones for any carrier but T-Mobile is great in Los Angeles. It's their core market. Also there are some sites planned later this year to go online. Not to mention when I took at look at compass.t-mobile.com, not only was NYC lit up with over 40 new towers (includes microcells), so was the Los Angeles area.. 20 new sites in one zip code earlier this year. So, things are always subject to change.

can't say anything about manhatten, but worked fine in queens when i visited the inlaws last thanksgiving
I live in the same areas you metioned L.A./I.E. and i have tmo the service is great in L.A. I had verizon and went to school in west la and the service was patchy but with tmo it was at minimum 2 bars all over same area with 3g. the only problem i find with tmo is going to events with a lot of people/cells phones, the phone has service/3g but i couldn't text, make a call, or use the internet. i have problems with this at dodger games and i had problems during the summer at coachella but i love tmo and will definitely be getting the vibrant!!

The Pre-HSPA+ network was pretty limited in terms of how many calls and data it could handle but HSPA+ should alleviate that until the site runs out of spectrum (slots for calls/data).

Not about to get into an argument about it, just going by my own experience. I used several HTC phones, a MDA, Touch Duo and Diamond. I found the reception great where I live near the Empire State Building, but really crappy in my office in Flatiron and under Grand Central. Even A/B tested with borrowed iPhone SIMs to make sure it was a carrier issue and not a phone issue. I switched to AT&T in Nov of 2008 and haven't had a problem since using a Fuze, Omnia 2 and Nexus One. (Meanwhile T-Mobile went from having only crap phones to a great lineup and AT&T went to becoming a one-trick iPony)
My point wasn't that T-Mobile sucks. I rather like the company, but the service didn't work for me in the places I tend to be a lot. My point was that you should try to actually confirm the reception yourself in the places you frequent rather than just going by others' experiences.

November 2008 is far too long ago. HTC/Apple (especially Samsung) phones also really don't offer good reception regardless of sim swapping. A phone with crap reception will be even crappier on PCS and less crappy on CLR (850). I already stated that I've seen over 40 pink "T"'s on compass.t-mobile.com in NYC earlier this year which ultimately means coverage has improved since 2008. ATM there are over 7 new sites showing and that's within the last 90 days.
That doesn't mean the coverage isn't weak, but the phone matters greatly and the ones you listed are all average or below average. I can go out to a warehouse and have my Samsung phone lose coverage, but not my Motorola? If I only had Samsung phones I'd probably think there was no coverage in that warehouse when there actually is coverage, my Samsung just didn't pick up the signal.
I will say this about T-Mobiles service, about 6 months ago the best signal I could get in my house was edge, now mind you the only carriers getting signal at all in my house were Verizon and T-Mobile. AT&T and Sprint could not get a signal whatsoever even at a window.
Well I woke up one morning and saw a full 5 bars of 3G and thought I was dreaming. Well low and behold now I have that all the time just about anywhere I go. For the record I only live about 10-15 minutes from Boston, so it's not like I'm in the middle of nowhere lol.
Just waiting patiently for my HSPA+ now, which the Boston market is confirmed as getting it soon.

I think you're basically illustrating my point. All the reasons I switched are irrelevant to anyone that is not me in Nov of 2008. They were highly relevant to me in Nov of 2008, considering that I couldn't get service in a place I spend 1/3 of my life on weekdays. It didn't matter how good the reception would be once they finished the AWS rollout, how good it was in LA or 35 miles from the Canadian border or the fact that the phones I like have sub-par reception. The decision had to be made based on my own experience not someone else saying that it was good.

Because this is a phone forum and not a (no offense) network fanboy forum. The phone I want and the phone you want are basically the same and there's more activity here. A root update was posted in the Vibrant dev forum that answered a question on the Captivate forum. Our phone drops 3 days after yours and there's going to be a lot of experimentation going on and the results will benefit both of us.
That and I thought I had something to add to the conversation and couldn't keep my trap shut. Personal failing.

I doesn't really matter whose on what carrier. Each person is going to have different needs and different carriers will support those different needs. I think we can all agree this will be a kick ass phone and blows the iphone out of the water.
I thought engadget did a piece on data rates of carriers & ATT came out on top. Was this incorrect?
I am in love with this Nexus-S, my fav Android phone by far, and in the past I have owned; MyTouch 3G...Nexus-One...EVO 4G...
I really like the compact size and lightweight feel to it, but still feels like a solid device to me, and it is super thin for a powerful smart phone, plus of course the S AMOLED screen is drool worthy. And battery life is way better than the EVO. And to top it off, being a Google developer phone, comes with no carrier bloatware, or manufacturer UI's, and is a "pure" Android phone with the latest OS.
But...T-Mobile is a deal breaker for me, compared to Sprint for connection. In Chicago it is pretty good, just sucks once inside houses or buildings. I own a Millwork supply business for custom home builders, and I am in and out of new homes a lot, and it seems to drop signal once I go inside a new construction building. Same with my own home, I have my Office in Basement, and it is like 90% loss of signal down there. I can never make or receive calls down there, but texting is good. Where as my EVO on Sprint, worked pretty good in the Basement, not perfect, but much better than the Nexus-S, and going to job sites, my EVO never dropped calls. And Navigation on the Nexus-S, I have had a few slight issues, just having hard time locating me, that has only happened three times so far, had to restart phone each time. But my EVO the 6 months I owned it, I can remember maybe once it not locating me. Again I blame this on T-Mobile not the Nexus.
But T-Mobile monthly is approx $30 cheaper per month which is nice. But then what good is saving thirty bucks, if I drop signal indoors, and somewhat spotty navigation service. Not sure what to do...I bought the Nexus-S on launch day Dec 17th, at Best Buy Mobile, paid cash full retail for the phone, not sure what my return options are ?
Is your nexus on 3g mode? Have you tried to put it in edge to see if it helps?

Tried that this morning, more for battery saving. But then went to make a call, and it screwed up. It was calling my client, but no ringing tone, and I clicked end call, and it just hung there, so I had to restart and tried again in 3G and it worked fine.
I was driving near O'Hare airport at the time, and that area is know to kill cell signals.
ya T-mo has horrible building penetration but other than that, i love em, great customer service, great speeds, and they are always improving

That is my only beef with this phone. "horrible building penetration", too bad that can't be upgraded by T-Mobile. Other than that I LOVE this phone.

the building penetration has nothing to do with the phone its the frequency that T-mo uses the higher the frequency the worse the building penetration.
Kinda sucks but T-mo is coming out with one of those Cellphone base station signal thingies (forgot what they are really called) so that may help you out
I'm with the OP; best damned phone I've owned in terms of appearance, feel, performance right out of the box...but T-Mo just doesn't deliver in some areas I need it to. When it delivers, it's the best out there, but too many places that indoors it kills the service. When I've got full 3G service it's at least 25% faster than AT&T, and 3-5 times faster than Sprint.
One office building I work out of is T shaped. If you're on the left side of the T, great signal, but go anywhere on the right side of the T and you're in a total dead zone. AT&T's not much better in that building, but in most places of town (Los Angeles SF, SG, SC Valley areas), it's better than T-Mo. Verizon works well there.
To the OP, if you're willing to shell out the dough, about $300, you can buy a cellular signal booster, I did when I got a Nexus One, it allowed me to actually get a T-Mo signal inside my house; I'd recommend one for your basement office if you can run the antenna coax line to outdoors. Voice and EDGE only, though, there's only one brand that claims to do T-Mo AWS/3G right now, and their device is $450.

Do what I'm doing. Month to month in at&t no data... buy a clear 4g wimax ispot...hack it to work on any device. Only $25 a month works great. I couldn't stand edge but know how crappy tmobile is

Thanks for the link, reading the user reviews, makes this sound like exactly what I need for my home Office. But still won't help when out at job sites, and losing signal inside.
So now I need to decide, keep the Nexus-S which I LOVE, but have iffy service inside, or just go back to the EVO with near perfect indoor service ?

I understand that the 1700/2100mhz spectrum has harder time penetrating buildings but it should not be THAT bad...
I come from Europe where most of the networks only use 2100Mhz and i don't recall seeing such a penetration issue.
It has to be T-Mobile's lack of towers which results in such poor indoor coverage.
at&t is also 90% 1900Mhz in the SF Bay Area and they have no problem with indoor reception, at least not as bad as T-Mobile.
That's my only main issue with the phone.
I ordered a signal booster from JDteck.com (which are the only ones who are providing a 1700/2100Mhz boosters). I'll report back how it works.

As of 2009, AT&T moved most of their 3G spec to the 850mhz band, so indoor reception should be EVEN better, or at least battery life should have improved a bit. I remember this was a big issue back in the iPhone days. I'm pretty sure they're entirely on 850mhz.

Whatever happened to that TMo [email protected] thing a few years ago? I remember they did a pilot program and then expanded. It was pretty popular. Too bad they stopped that.

Agreed on T-Mo needs more towers, if they weren't so far spread apart, we'd get better penetration in more areas.
Not sure about the AT&T in San Francisco part, though. I've listened to Leo LaPorte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose and all that ilk ***** and moan about AT&T poor signal/reception on the iPhone in San Francisco for a couple of years until AT&T started rolling out the 850mhz on the 3G side. New York City the same thing - poor AT&T penetration on the 1900mhz side in and amongst all the tall buildings.

I'll be very interested in your report back on that. This is the one I referenced, but not by name, in my earlier post. It didn't seem worth the $200 extra premium to get the AWS service repeated, since in my home I have WiFi anyways, but when I bought the unit I do have, this JDteck one wasn't available.

What part of SoCal are you in? I'm in the San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley most of my time. In the North part of both valleys T-Mo data is EDGE only in large areas, and even voice has a hard time getting into buildings. It's really a bummer when I have to spend time up in Santa Clarita.
My house is actually in a little dead/poor coverage area spot even on T-Mo's maps...it's right on the edge of three different towers that don't quite fully overlap their coverage circles. I can get a signal outdoors, but inside not very good without my cellular extender.
I've still got my grandfathered iPhone SIM for one of my Androids (i9000), $30 for true "unlimited" data, no caps or throttles on that one. Someone told me they're using the unlimted data for non-smartphones on their Galaxy S with AT&T because AT&T can't recognize the IMEI and that it's a smartphone. I think that data is $10/month.
PS. SimplyMobile sounds intriguing. Read some good reports of it in another thread. Uses T-Mo's voice and data service, everything unlimited (voice, text, data (3g)) for $60/mo.

you have to realize that tmobile's 3g network is still very young, so all the gaps are not filled in which is required for higher frequency networks. since towers need to be spaced closer together for bands such as 1900mhz and higher, i'm sure tmobile only laid out the bare minimum during their initial 3g roll out just to get SOMETHING out there. over time they may fill in the gaps.
and we all know how stellar the coverage is in UK even using the 2100mha band. however its the same story, less physical geography to cover, in addition to better government regulations over there "forcing" one technology standard and set of common frequencies. that makes it much better for ubiquious coverage in general.

Yeah I looked into that too (since the Vibrant has Att's 1900 3g band built in and Att won't recognize the IMEI) but I believe the $10 data is only available on a family plan and only if they have the unlimited messaging already on their plan, an extra $20 per month.
So say you do this family plan trick the savings are kind of washed out compared to T-mobile:
$70 per month for 700 minutes
$25 per month for 2gb of data for iPhone
$20 per month for unlimited messaging
$10 per month for "dumbphone" data

$125 per month. Yuck!
I'd rather just stick with T-mobile even more plus contract free:

I've seen some posts where they're saying that "unlimited data" on Simple Mobile actually means 1GB cap. I'd check that out before switching.
I love Sprint. I always have. For what I use them for, which is primarily internet, they are the fastest. Great prices, great phones (now at least) and the fastest 3g, and though not in my area, now 4g. Plus my laptop now has 4g built in, though I'm sure you need Clear for that and not Sprint. But I digress. I don't like ATT nor do I like Verizon. I used to have T Mobile under my brother's old employee plan and though I didn't have too many problems with them their coverage was still not as good as Sprint's. However, they do have HSPA+ and they always get the newest Android phones. Plus, HSPA+ is in my area. Now, my contract is up in October some time so i'd wait till then most likely but what is everyone's opinion? Since Verizon DSL sucks ass and I work from home I need an internet connection and some 4g WiMax would be real nice when DSL kicks out on me (besides, my 3Mbps connection I pay for only yields 1.73 Mbps at the most so WiMax would be faster anyway). So the question is, especially to those who have WiMax right now and, preferably, those who have tried TMo's HSPA+ network, if WiMax is not in my area by October 2011, do I stay with Sprint and just go month to month or upgrade my phone or whatnot or do I jump ship to Tmo and get instant, multiple mobile megabit (say that three times fast) gratification?
I'm sure most of you will say Sprint and generally I would too. Especially with the unlimited mobile to mobile regardless of carrier and since my girlfriend has Sprint, Sprint is the most attractive option. But is HSPA+ right now, LTE in the future and the prospect of the coolest Android phones (and most importantly, dev phones) first worth it or is Sprint and their blazing (hey, King of Prussia, PA, after the first or second WiMax firmware update, had speeds of 7+Mbps!) fast WiMax network (which will be more mature than the others by the time they are widespread) worth waiting for? Even after Sprint gets WiMax over here, is it worth keeping or should I switch? Such a hard decision that I have 9 months to make
Unless Sprint comes out with a bad a$$ phone (and I mean really bad a$$), I'm probably going to jump ship and go to t-mobile or verizon once my contract is up.

I left T-Mobile to come to Sprint for exactly the opposite reasons you're thinking about going.

T-Mobile does have HSPA+ but it is far slower than Sprint's Wimax. Granted, you don't have Wimax yet, but when you do and you're getting less than half the speed on HSPA+ you'll understand why it was worth the wait.
Secondly, Sprint introduced the Evo in June of last year, not in January like everyone else did. The result? T-Mobile got the Moto Cliq (gag), ATT got... ... ...something and Verizon got another sequel to the Droid series. What did Sprint get 6 months later? The freaking Evo, a phone that's still a top of the line device even now. Can't say that about the CES releases from last year from the other 3.
T-Mobile does NOT get the newest and greatest Android phones. Keep in mind that the Galaxy S series went to every carrier, we got the Epic and T-Mob got the Vibrant. T-Mob got ripped off. The G2 seems like a nice device but I owned one and let me tell you something, the Evo kicks that things ass twice (twice because the G2 has two pieces...meaning 2 asses that must be kicked). The MyTouch 4g seemed nice, but it runs Expresso, not sense, which means it gets less attention than Sense will. They started Android with the G1, but Verizon and Sprint have the best Android phones (and coverage) to date. Since everyone hates Verizon because they're so damned expensive, Sprint is the clear winner when it comes to Android and service.
T-Mobile, ATT and Verizon seem like attractive choices because they're pumping out phones with new technology and things like that, but keep in mind that in the 6 months until Sprint releases their phone of the year, that technology is only going to get better...and that's what we'll be getting.
Patience, I jumped ship (yeah, paid the early termination fee and everything) from T-Mobile for a reason. They suck, their phones are AT BEST the top of the mid-range class and their "4g" is 2nd rate.

I also just jumped ship from t-mobile. They were expensive, coverage wasn't great and the customer service was heading down hill fast. I agree with the above post...they dont get top of the line phones, they get medium phones for teeny boppers. I had the vibrant, the g2 felt flimsy. I was going to get the mytouch 4g but it didn't blue me away either so I paid the etf and got the hell out
One thing to keep in mind is that T-Mobile is planning to upgrade 2/3's of their HSPA+ network to 42 Mbps. They are claiming real world download speeds of 25 Mbps. IMO, nothing beats getting a off contract, unlocked Nexus 1/S and paying something like $5-10 for unlimited data. They do however throttle after 5 GB, so something to keep in mind.

G2, MYT4G, Nexus S - all top of the line phones when they were released. Not sure what you are talking about.
For me personally there is no better carrier in my area. (Baltimore) and that is the most important factor for me. I have friends on BigRed and TMob and when they come to my house and were hanging out in the basement, they can't ever get a signal while I always have 3-4 bars in my house. Plus wherever I am I have great Wimax coverage when I want to use it....avg 7-8 mbps. And there is no comparison of the price factor so I dont even need to discuss that. Im on a family plan (Wife has a EVO too) and noone else can compare to the value of what im paying, so I could care less about what others are doing. Sprints on top of the game in this area.

LMAO 500 minutes?!? have two teenage daughters who both text +6000 texts a month plus gab on the phone when not texting. I had Tmobile for the same type plan but without data on two out of three lines I was paying $30 more a month than I am now with sprint. And they said I was on my own when T-mobile pushed a bad update on my cliq that bricked it, even when I had insurance. I was left without a phone, sprint wouldnt do that either.
Sprint is building in a positive direction. T-Mobile isn't too bad but there service is extremely spotty. Verizon & At&t both shot themselves in the heart by locking into iPhone's.
Verizon won't hold the top spot for long with the addition of the iPhone. It really destroys customer service and Apple will limit what other smartphones they can carrier.
T-Mobile actually isn't too bad phone-wise or plan-wise but there service coverage is just tooo spotty. I believe T-Mobile and Sprint will be fighting for the top spot in the industry soon (Or might have a union planned). Reason being, they got the HD2 then Sprint says "Ohh Ohh look at me, checkmate, we've got the Evo!!"
AT&T = lost cause. I hope there cable tv can help them survive. They have too many devices and pretty much nothing that stands out. They were the last to come to the 4G party and won't be up to par anyway.
Now we have little old Sprint. I've been a customer for over 10 years. There customer service has grown leaps and bounds over the past year or so and they have proved they want to be industry leaders. They were the first to 4G, they were the first in the US to upgrade a device to Froyo, and come February 7th they will be the first CDMA carrier with a WP7 Device (And it'll be an HTC Device too). And even with the tiny $10 addon (that I've had for 6 months anyway), I'm still $20-$30 lower than I would be for the exact same thing at any other carrier.

Here's my comments to this:
HSPA+ on T-mobile? Cool. Except for the fact that my friend has a G2 with it and I can download apps from the market faster on Sprint's 3g than he can on HSPA+
T-mobile gets the best phones? Not really. And there's no indication they will be getting any of the CES talked phones anytime soon.
I think you're considering leaving Sprint at the wrong time.
Things are looking up. They're adding new customers for the first time in years.
They are getting real good phones that are comparable or better than the other carriers. [The Epic and Evo were considered the "best phones in the world" last year, for example]
Sprint is hands down the cheapest.
Their network coverage is second only to Verizon, and allows for free roaming on Verizon as well.
WiMax will come to your area, eventually.
I'm telling you right now though, HSPA+ is slow.
Sprint's 3g is better.
And no, I don't care about some study taken in the perfect settings, I care about reality.
HSPA+ on T-mobile with full bars is slower than Sprint's 3g with half bars.
I did the test myself.

I was referring to the crappy design of the g2(hinge), the nexus is top dog, but its a samsung and no sd card slot (wtf?) and the mt4g is great, but I was thinking about support and tmo's lack of timely upgrades. They are more geared towards the younger crowd and not towards tech heads...just my opinion

I too have been a long time sprint customer; you hit it spot on with this post.
Sent on the go from my HTC EVO
I just came from tmob as well. I for one was pleased with their coverage and service.... for the most part. I had the N1 and damn near cried when I had to hand it over to the Sprint guy for the buy back.
However, I was getting really tired of dropping calls with my wife. That's a local coverage thing but it didn't seem to matter where she or I was, we would get disconnected a lot. We had also started to go over on our minutes which was getting rather pricey.
The last nail in the coffin was when the wife's BB9700 took a crap on her just 1 month after the warranty expired.... big surprise right?
We looked at the Vibrant. Meh. Still on 2.1 (my wife is not into modding her phone or anything so rooted roms don't count for her).
We looked at the G2. Even the tmob salesman said that the hinge mechanism was a piece of crap and didn't recommend the phone.
We looked at the Mytouch 4G. Meh. Running that horrible espresso overlay and you lose the search button for that "Genius" button that couldn't even tell me where the nearest McDonald's was.
So we went to check out Sprint. I always knew that the EVO was one of the top notch pieces of hardware out there and I'm not about to pay the retarded rates that Verizon charges.
So far, very happy with the phone. It's still not my Sexy Nexy but I've got almost all of the same stuff going on it now.
So far, mostly happy with Sprint. No BS when I call with questions. Absolutely no BS when I took my wife's EVO in because the power button wouldn't click. Still worked, just wouldn't click... They replaced it on the spot.... not the button, the whole damn phone. Coverage in my area is so-so. That's to be expected where I live though.
My biggest beef with Sprint is that I can't use data while I'm using voice. That sucks but it isn't a deal breaker.
So, to the OP, I would take a long hard look at how the two carriers compare around the time that you are looking to switch. Then I would look at the hardware available at the time. Then I would make the choice.
T-Mobile has ****-tastic service in Chicago, they blow monkey balls here. The worst building penetration, good luck getting calls in an Basement Office on T-Mobile, or inside skyscrapers. And just random dropped calls daily. I had T-Mo for 3yrs on a few different phones, and all had the same crap service. I traded in my EVO for the Nexus-S at Christmas, ( I am a cell phone addict always upgrading ) anyways, and a week later came running back to Sprint and my EVO. Nexus-S was a cool phone, just not on T-Mo.
6 months I have been on Sprint has been fantastic. Sprint in Chicago is near perfect, never a dropped call, but like once a month maybe, and I get full bars in the Sears Tower, and in Basements. Plus their monthly plan is right there with T-Mo, very good pricing, much cheaper than ATT and Verizon.
And wait until this Summer, when the best smart phone on the market comes out = EVO 2, you will be pissed your on T-Mo.
Bottom Line; yes stick with Sprint. Sprint is the best deal right now, but to me the EVO line is all they got going, which is all I care about anyways, but not many other cool phones on Sprint, the Epic 4G = epic fail, and some other dog pile phones they try to pawn off. Would be cool to see Sprint get the iPhone just to help them get more sales and a better name.
I have been getting more and more frustrated with sprint and today, actually right now the best buy rep is setting up my account with tmobile. Speak with your wallets folks.

Wow i really do want this phone badly. But i'm just so afraid of sprints 3g coverage. I can barely watch a you tube video now. Anything that involves data sucks. What good is a phone if the coverage is horrable. Plus now they are really going to get hammered with to many people on the network for them to handle. Anyone else afraid of this?
I feel the same way. I live in phoenix and their 3g here (at least around my job and home) sucks balls. My friends edge tmobile phone gets better speeds.

I posted this in another thread but it applies here too. I get crappy 3G in my area and no 4G. They are so focused on bringing 3D phones but we can't even upload/stream regular vids to YouTube with their ****ty network. Why not roll out 4G in more cities and beef it up first? T-mobile is turning up the heat with 40mb in a few cities. This proves that sprint could turn it up as well if they wanted to.

I do wish that the new Evo did have the LTE radio, as rumored, but I get 5Mbps in my apartment on 4G, so I'm not going to complain too much. And I have no issues with my 3G in this area, either.
The thing of it is guys, is what are our options? AT&T-Mobile or Verizon. Both with data caps, sub-par customer service(at least from my experience with the GF's iphone) and high rates. There's really no other choice.
That being said, sprint absolutely needs to step up their network. My evo will never connect to 4G. i can be sitting in downtown Dallas, TX, right in the middle of the alleged 4G coverage area and never connect. Its worthless.
I've never had an issue with 3G. Wimax is another thing. It's mostly good but I hardly use it for anything. I'm almost always in Wifi when I want to download a big file anyway. Pretty sure they are going to eventually add LTE support to their towers since Wimax is ok for cheaply blanketing an area in Wifi-like coverage but isn't so great in big buildings and they are dependent on Clearwire's oversubscribed network.
For all the talk of "why are they worrying about 3D phones and stuff like that", they need to stay up on the flashy new handsets because that is what gets them subscribers. This is their chance to really make or break their company with the playing field narrowing soon. AT&T proved with the iPhone that folks will put up with all kinds of crap for a must-have handset so they need to keep putting out exclusives that stand out in the market in order to stay attractive to customers.
Moving to another company would cost me a lot more per month and add a data cap so I am not going anywhere soon. I used to have T-Mobile to fall back on if Sprint ever pissed me off but with them being bought up, it's time to double down on Sprint.
Since when does VZW have a data cap? And I dont mean some data cap that "may" come at some point down the road. At this point the data is still unlimited.
I live in KC, which is basically saying the Sprint HQ (overland park is a division of KC) and the service here could def be better. 3g is no too bad, unless you go to Overland Park. Which is funny, because your IN the campus, and service blows. 4g... you pretty much have to be downtown to really make it "better" than 3g. I too find it odd that t-mo can ramp up 3g speeds to topple our 4g. Co worker has tmo and he dominates me in d/l speed. Somehow for him that equates to his mytouch slide 4g being better than my evo, but then again he does have a wicked self idolize-ing issue.

what part of downtown? i can sit over by the opera house and get 4g.
Ok guys, relax. It's one of two things if you are getting slow 3g speeds.
First, Sprint is actually growing again. In some areas it's growing so much that the existing network is at capacity. It's being addressed.
Or, it's a bug with some phones on 3.70 or 3.70 based ROMs. It's being addressed in the next update (not sure if it's going to be gingerbread or not)

Not disagreeing at all with your points, but the max capacity is what the op is saying he's/she's afraid of. I've seen extremely slow coverage expansion of 4g in KC, while other carries have been going hard at it. It's doubtful they are expanding 3g much anymore since 4g is the "new baby." I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but if the op is more concerned with coverage, and the fact that we face $10 a month for 4g coverage, he may very well be better off with another carrier.
You all act like Sprint could revamp their entire network overnight if they wanted. I know for fact they are working on it, and I see signs of improvement all the time. I can get 2Mb downloads now on 3g in several locations in my city where 2-3 months ago I was lucky to get 200k. Maybe they could make people happier faster in the short term by taking shortcuts, but it looks like they're doing it right. So have patience or gtfo.

Supposedly Sprint also has a "cap." Never seen it myself, but that "rumor" has gone around a bit.
I feel the exact same way. My 3g is terrible, I get anywhere from 200-700 MAX DOWN and about 400 UP. No 4g at all. :/

Try growing up?? WTF??? Did you not click on the link to see that I was trying to provide some hope for people that are not in a good data area?
I did not even say it was ok in my city... I said there are signs of improvement and there are places that are great. I was just trying to help people out who think the network sux everywhere and Sprint is not doing anything about it anywhere... because that is wrong. They are working on it diligently.
Perhaps my "have patience or gtfo" comment was a little rude, but that sums up the situation here. The network sux. It's getting better. If you can't wait for the improvements, complaining on xda is not going to do anything for you.
