Gingerbread - G2 and Desire Z General

Gingerbread suposely came out yesterday?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

i thought i heard that too,i was so pumped and then nothing...

I wonder what new goodies they are baking into the new gingerbread update. And us G2 users will probably get it sooner than a lot of user since we are running stock vanilla android. SEE, it can be a good thing sometimes. (i prefer vanilla over samsungs touch wiz and motoblur but i do like htc sense alot)

I hope we get gingerbread

I love vanilla android but I really liked moto blur on my Charm but touch wiz felt like samsung wanted to make their phone as close to an iphone without actually being an iphone

TouchWiz IS iPhone wannabe which is very lame and Samsung fails at it. Look at Samsung’s support for its android phones. Shame

His join date is also a few years before Android phones even came out, so my guess is he could be rocking any number of phones. Not everybody on the XDA forums posts in the one they own in particular. It could have just been a Gingerbread curiosity in general and it came up in a search.

Going to trade out my Vibrant tomorrow for a G2.
I can't stand the lack of support from Samsung, the stupid GSP, no accessories...

Lack of support? GPS issues? Umm they just came out with an update that basically got rid of all the lag and makes the GPS a lot better... Lack of support... yea...
They are actively testing Froyo also so that should be coming very soon. Good luck with that G2 though. I wouldn't go anywhere near it.
Can we all just agree to not post here so this thread dies soon... I hope this is the last post in this thread!

JI6 got me an initial satelite lock but once I was moving it was still horrible. I am really glad you all will be getting Froyo months after it has been available but Samsung chose to ship with an outdated OS.
This is the first phone I have ever owned that I literally hated. Even though the G2 isn't rootable ATM, I'll take an HTC on its worst day over any Samsung on its best day.

I like Samsungs hardware but the customer service SUCKS... My 2 friends got the update and both of them got stuck on vibrant logo (basicly bricked phones) this should not happen with a little simple maintenance fix. I can't imagine what the problems will be like with froyo. Look at HTC for example they updated their phones to 2.2 long ago with no problems.... Its all Samsungs fault, they're lazy to work on the updates..

No, we're getting Froyo ... beta has already leaked if you haven't noticed. Official version from Samsung / Sprint should be out sometime in the near future. Don't get your hopes up with Gingerbread because we won't see that on the Epics for quite a while.
Yep. Like I said in the froyo leak forum, any person phone-geeky enough to be hanging out in XDA will probably have a different phone by the time Gingerbread hits the Epic.
However someone did make a good point in that the Nexus S will have gingerbread and since that's a Galaxy S phone it will hopefully be easy to port over to the Epic.

That was me who said that, and I haven't yet seen anyone argue that it wouldn't be possible....
While the coming update is undoubtedly Froyo, I think it's only a matter of time before we'll have 2.3. Considering the new Nexus is the "Nexus S" from Samsung and looks to basically be another Galaxy S variant, I think ports will happen.
The Nexus S is not a CDMA phone so the port will take a bit or time, unless the 2.2 kernel works out of the box with 2.3.
It's possible but don't expect instant gratification.
Also shouldn't this be in general?

Honeycomb is going to be 3.0
Epic experience + Phoenix kernel + Emotionless beast = Great functionality, Exceptional battery life, and Sweet eye candy.
2.3 would have to be released to the devs at the handset manufacturers so they could customize it for their phones (load it with their crap bloatware, custom interface, etc.....). As we have seen, that takes time (2.2 has been out for a while now). If we were to see 2.3, it would probably be 6 months from now, about the time 2.4 or 3.0 (they should call it Poundcake.....good name, and good Van Halen song) is coming out.
I don't think our handsets will ever see 2.3 at this rate. It will be another year into the future before we see it, and by then our phones won't even be powerful enough to make phone calls.
Oh we will definitely see 2.3 on the epic even if it has to be unofficially brought to us ;-)

This is exactly why I am so excited about the Nexus S. In the same way that the Nexus One gave the Incredible, the Evo 4G and the other HTC devices amazing hacking potential, the Nexus S will make our Galaxy S phones way way better.
More developers will be working on this platform, and we will have all the google stuff working on hardware that is 99% the same. Really, the only thing different will be the CDMA/4G radios, but that is just minor stuff since that is the only difference between the Nexus One and the Evo. Also, the Epic Experience ROM is full of stuff taken off of other Galaxy S devices and it all works great.
Also, I'm going to say that this phone is not dual core. It might have a 1.2ghz hummingbird, but thats the only thing that might be different. It might also have some filesystem stuff that is different but we can hack around all of that. Hopefully it is using the same GPS chip though, because Google will then really light a fire under Samsung to make sure they fix it once and for all.

looks like quite a phone! i've had it out against samsung since i first bought the samsung moment for my wife and i (and had both of them swapped 3 times because of random data disconnections and no gps locks), but perhaps they've changed. what are your thoughts?
Because we talk about the EVO here.

this is the general section. and the nexus & evo3d or any future phone that will dethrone the evo is worthy to talk about here. it's upgrade time for most of us and probably most of the devs including toast. nothing wrong with having a discussion.
Knowing Sprint, we will probably get a keyboard variation of that phone. Epic 2 or Epic __, maybe a new name entirely. EPIC 3D would be funny lol (1st Qwerty 3D phone )
It does seem impressive, Samsung seems to be cleaing up thier updating track record too. The only excuse I have of not buying it is the weaker XDA backing. Not to say there will be none but I prefer HTC + XDA.

This is what crApple is suing Samsung over:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samm...n-Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-units-this-year_id18520
The interesting part is the rumor that Eldar Murtazin spread this week in regards to the Apple-Samsung lawsuit, about a Samsung Galaxy S3 upgrade that is coming late fall, with 4.5" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED Plus display of high resolution, and no hardware keys. These same features Apple is said planning to introduce in the iPhone 6, which will appear many months after the SGS 3, which must have annoyed Cupertino to no end.

Essentially, Samsung developed features for the Galaxy S3 that Stevie boy wanted to release in the iPhone 6, so Apple is trying to slow/stop Samsung in court, so Apple can be the first one to release those features.
I'm sure Sprint will get a variant of this, its the successor to the Epic 4G. I just hope that this time it doesn't have a hardware keyboard. I think this phone would be the best choice for the next Nexus phone.

[Q] So the Nexus S 4G comes out May 8th

How will this help us epic users on may 8th?
The answer is still: We will have to wait and see how the source code from the Nexus is useful, which depends on which hardware elements it shares with our Epics.
Uh, well is someone going to supply an epic dev with what they need?

Or someone who's happy with they'd phone but hates the bugs. Hardware wise both phones may share the same cpu and gpu but everything else is better in the nexus s. Like the gps chip for one. While I do prefer the epic 4Gs looks the nexus a is a better handset in the end. I'm tired of constantly searching for that "perfect" rom. A pure google experience is the closest thing I can think of.

I don't see why you need to be insulting people who want to get a Nexus S 4G. It seems like a good phone for someone who wants to have the latest android releases immediately available to them. My wife is probably getting the Nexus S 4G as an upgrade from her HTC Hero. The main reason is that she loves CM7 on her Hero and I can't guarantee her CM7 (or future CM releases) on any other phone for sprint. You calling her stupid or in your words "nobody smart" is pretty ridiculous on multiple levels, but mostly because her reasons for getting the Nexus are sound.

When I get a new phone....hopefully...soon, I'm not real sure what it will be. The Nexus just feels AWESOME in your hand but I'm used to the slide out keyboard. The GSII sounds awesome as well but we saw how the support was on the Samsung side plus TW makes development SO much more difficult.
The Nexus S 4G isn't really a step forward like the GSII or the EVO 3D will be. It would also be hard to leave the SAMOLED screen for Super LCD/TFT. Decisions...Decisions...
Been using a 3 years old Palm Pre and have been amazed at how it just works. The specs of the HP Pre 3 look to be pretty solid. I love how emails works correctly on the Pre. I hate the unreliability of email polling on Android in general.

Thank You Crucifixion......Nothing Special about an IPhone. NOT A DARN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't get me wrong.. the iphone5 is going to be really sweet. But idk, i have an ipod and an ipad.. the UI can get boring as all it is a is a big app drawer ui. The apps are DEF an advantage, but I see more and more ios apps coming to android.
Pass. But if it's good for Sprint and not bad for their network, hope people are happy. An iPhone right now would actually be a big step down from my Epic, for all kinds of reasons. Android forever (translated from Geek: for the foreseeable future until they **** us folks ;-) ).
Its way to early to tell if this is a bad thing(maybe not, since they're raising prices allready) but I really hope its not and it gets sprint some needed leaverage.

Very nicely put. I fully agree.

You know what would be VERY cool? An iPhone5 running Android. Its undoubtedly going to be miles ahead of Android phones with regards to hardware, as the new iPad's are every time one is released. Getting Android on one would be amazing, but probably impossible.

I have casually tried both iPhone 4 and iPads and never received the impression that they were better spec-ed than the latest Android or even Windows equivalents. Now that Apple is at war with basically anyone who isn't them in tech world, I think they will consistently lose any raw horsepower race (Samsung may not want to sell to them anymore for one). Maybe they will retain an edge in usability for some people, but they are the design kings, as long as you don't despise iTunes like I do, and price gouging.
I'm jumping with my wife. I started on AT&T and iPhone then moved to sprint because cost of the plan. I've seen both sides and so far you can't beat the stability and battery if your willing to drink Steves koolaid!
Looks like I finally made up my mind about what my next phone is going to be. Iphone 5 is it. I was gonna get the Epic Touch but quickly remembered the fact that my phone is on 2.2.1 in an era where Android is at 2.3.6, and how frustrating the Gingerbread leaks have been so far. Not to forget the fact that Samsung doesn't even have the courtesy to share their source code or drivers so that we can create our own up to date roms. I'm never dealing with Samsung again. It's been a nightmare.

Yeah, Samsung leaves a bad taste in your mouth about updates.

As opposed to how up to date Apple keeps their phones. With Apple you don't even have to worry about late updates. Ios frees you from that hassle. You have great, fast, stable, low latency audio software, and you can jailbreak your phone and customize it as much as Android in terms of appearance and functionality. Plus you have much more games and apps. Can't lose.
