RAM Test for the Focus.. - Focus General

So I know many have seen post after post questioning the RAM and the winning sentiment is that the Focus has 512 MB of RAM. This really comes from the Samsung web page Q/A.
So now that we have the phones, can we confirm this in any way? Is there an application or diagnosis code to show RAM? It would be nice to verify instead of taking this at face value.

Memory capacity question

Hi All,
I just wonder why most of PDAs including Hermes have a very little RAM. Is it because the memory for PDA is very expensive or because of something else? I don't mind to pay an extra $100 if they can increase the RAM to at least 1G. iPhone can have 8G, why can they made 1G PDA
hi mate...u can use 8Gb micro sdhc on your hermes you know...why pay extra 100$ for 1G???and with my experience, a memorycard + card reader is WAY FASTER than any internal memory...cheers....
Some of applicantions can not run in sd card or run faster if you install in internal memory. 64MB is too small. The latest HP iPAQ 110 still only has 64MB. Is there a reason why they can not increase the memory?
Note that the iPhone's 4/8Gb is storage, equivalent to the memory card slot on a PDA (which the iPhone doesn't have).
Several iPhone hacking sites put the actual RAM at 128Mb, which more than a few PDA's and smartphones already have.
They (HTC) and they will do it. Its just a matter of economics. They will increase the memory to get you to buy a new PPC.

[18 August 08] SmartPhone Wars 2008: Specs, camparision Thread and poll.

I saw that there was like 20 post on XDA that had to do with either how good or bad Xperia, Diamond, Raphael or iPhone 3G were. So i thought of starting a thread that would, basically layout a camparision of all the major comtendors of the SmartPhones War 2008. If you have a preference towards any of these phones or would like to add more information to the thread pr just comments, go ahead or just drop by and say why you like the phone you picked or something..
And ya, if you voted for Others, then please reply in a post of which phone, specifically did you vote for.
And by the way, Mods, if this thread belongs in another forum, then feel free to move it.
Some people are really stuck between phones and just can decide, so i thought Customer Satisfaction could become a deciding issue, so here you go. HTC isn't in the list, sorry about that and just remember just cause somebody else didn't like it, doesn't mean you have to feel the same way.

Even with all the buzz about the Diamond, there's really isn't anything that they Diamond has that's unique or better than everybody else, except the TouchFlo 3d INTERFACE, which the Touch Pro also has.
When can you officially get it? Q3 2008 for Europe and Asia, Late 2008 for US
What it's missing?
The Touch Diamond, like the iPhone lacks a micro-SD card slot, this makes it an undesired product for people who want to have more than 4GB of storage on their phone and the flexibility of a MicroSD card. Big bumper, this was one of the iPhone family's biggest downfalls, now the Touch Diamond shares it. Another downfall that the Diamond shares with the iPhone is the lack of a physical keyboard, this has been a problem with every phone in the Touch series with the exception of Pro and Dual. The keyboard is probably the biggest problem with the Diamond and makes it very Buissness and Texters repelant.
HTC Touch Pro (Raphael)
The HTC Touch Pro or Raphael is basically a Diamond with a some give and takes like keyboard and lesser ROM, etc. Read on for details.

Screen resolution upgrade from QVGA Screen to VGA Screen
Increased ROM from 256 MB to 512 MB

Included HTC TV-out
Data Speeds update from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps
QWERTY Keyboard changed from 4 rows to 5 rows.
More powefull processor from 400mhz to 528 mhz
What does it have over everybody else?
The Touch Pro, with a 288 MB, has more RAM than any other phone in this war, this can be a big selling point for people who wanna' multi(over)-task their phones. The TF3D interface is also a much-awaited and usefull software.
When can you officially get it? Q3 2008 for Europe and Asia
What it's Missing?
The Touch Pro includes a Keyboard over Touch Diamond but Touch Pro, lacks the extra 4 GB of ROM that the Diamond includes. This is a major bumper since the iPhone and several other competitors include upto 16 GB of ROM, while all the Touch Pro has is 512 MB.
touch pro
im voting for the touch pro, it has all the spacs of the diamond, traded the 4gb storage for a sweet micro sd slot and added a full keyboard!!! cant go wrong with that
Apple iPhone 3G

Improvements to the body materials

What does it have over everybody else?
The iPhone 3G, just like it's predecessor features a 3.5 inch screen, which is bigger than anybody else amongst the competition, big feature for those who wanna' use it as a Multimedia and Internet device. Also the iPhone, arguably, features the easiest to use, UI which makes it more desirable for people who want a smartphone but don't really want to spend a lot of time on customization etc.
The Omnia also is tied with the iPhone when it comes to internal storage, with both of them offering 8 or 16 Gigs of storage, unparreled by anybody else.
When can you officially get it? July 11, 2008
What it's missing?(Limitations)
Physical Keyboard
Micro-SD Card Slot
MMS Capabilities
Video Recording
Copy/Paste
Several other software related limitations
Has to be bought with a expensive contract
Sony Xperia X1

Arc slider instead of the Tilt.
Data Speeds update from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps
More powefull processor from 400mhz to 528 mhz
What does it have over everybody else?
The Xperia has the best resolution screen out of all the reviewed phones, with a 800 by 640 screen it features an unrivaled screen resolution prefect for watching movies or browsing the web, overall Look and Feel will also be better with a higher quality screen.
It also features a Arc slider design with will make the screen more easily viewable when the sliding keyboard is in use.
When can you officially get it? Mid September for US (Unlocked)
What it's Missing?
The Xperia X1, like the Touch Pro lacks a respectable amount of internal storage, with only 512 MB it makes a very weak case against iPhone's 8 and 16GB or the Diamond's 4GB.
The Xperia, like most of the phones with a physical keyboard, is not very "Slim", so if you do care about your being silm and pocket fittable then Xperia loses the battle to phone like Diamond, Omnia and iPhone.
Samsung Omnia
A lot of people have shown enthusiasm about this phone on the thread, sorry for the long time it took to put up the specs put here it is. Samsung Omnia
Website: http://www.samsungomnia.com
Alternate Names: Samsung i900 and ATT i907
Manufacturer: Samsung Inc.
Predecessor: Samsung i830

Processor Marwell 624 Mhz
Camera: 5 MP with geotaging, auto focus, image stabilizer, face detection etc etc...
GPS Included
User Interface TouchViz UI
Data HSDPA 7.2
Major Improvements over predecessor
*NOTE: I'm not aware of any official predecessors of this phone but chronologically i830 was the last one in line, name wise, so we'll consider that as the Omnia's predecessor
OS Upgrade from WM 2003 SE to WM 6.1
Resolution upgrade from QVGA to WQVGA
ROM(Internal storage) upgrade from 128 MB to 16 or 8 GB.
Data upgrade from EV-DO to HSDPA 7.2
Increased Physical screen size from 2.8'' to 3.2''
UI change from Standard WM Interface toTouchViz UI
Weight depreciation
Slimmer and Sleeker Design
Wi-Fi included
Included Accelerometer (or some other means of Auto-Rotation)
Processor upgrade from Intel 520 MHz to Marwell 624 Mhz
What does it have over everybody else?
The Omnia is tied with the Blackberry Bold for the most powerful processor with a 624 Mhz Marwell.
The Omnia also features a 5 MP camera, which is by far the winner when it comes to Camera resolution.
The Omnia also is tied with the iPhone when it comes to internal storage, with both of them offering 8 or 16 Gigs of storage, unparreled by anybody else.
When Can you get officially get it? No Official Word yet.
What It's missing(lacks)?
The Samsung Omnia has the least resolution screen out of all the phones in SmartPhone wars 2008, this is a major bumper and a shame that a 3.2 inch screen gets lesser quality than a 2.8'' screen, and this means that the picture compared to the Xperia will be 1/2 as good.
Another major feature the Omnia misses out on is a Physical QWERTY keyboard, this is something that it's predecessors all had but i900 fails to inherit.
And there are also reports of the Omnia, not being a full touchscreen phone but uses some sensors, this is a super setback and can pausibly be a navigational problem.
The Omnia, unlike the Diamond and Touch Pro, lacks a magnetic stylus infact it lacks a stylus in general, some people consider this a drawback, since some find a stylus more comfortable than finger.
BlackBerry Bold (9000)

Predecessor: Blackberry 8830 (chronologically)

User Interface (New) Blackberry UI
Data HSDPA 3.6
Screen Size ???????
Screen Resolution 480 by 320 Pixels HVGA
Major Improvements over predecessor
OS Upgrade from BB OS 4.2 to BB OS 4.6
New Blackberry UI
Screen resolution doubled from QVGA Screen to HVGA Screen
Software updates for RIM applications
More powefull processor from 312 MHz to 624 MHz
What does it have over everybody else?
The Bold is tied with the Omnia for the most powerful processor with a 624 Mhz Marwell.
And eventough it's screen is only HVGA, it looks great on a it smaller physical size, so good that CNET called it the best looking screen ever on a cell phone.
When can you officially get it? Summer 2008
What it's Missing?
This is, according to many, the biggest bumper in the Bold, lack of a touchscreen, this closes the door to a lot of functionality and possibilities otherwise present in touchscreen phones.
The Bold, like the Touch Pro lacks a respectable amount of internal storage, with only 512 MB it makes a very weak case against iPhone's 8 and 16GB or the Diamond's 4GB. The Bold infact has the least amount of internal storage of all the major 08 smart phones.
The Blackberry Bold also includes a front keyboard, widely considered as a eyesore, this also means that it has the smallest screen size of all the major 08 smartphones, big time bumper.
those phones with a full keyboard in the front like that never seem to get that popular outside of usa and blackbarry country
personaly i think it's an eyesore
Samsung Omnia
I voted for the Samsung Omnia: http://samsungomnia.com/
Notice the speed of this device in opening applications from youtube videos. The screen may not be as responsive as we like, as it takes 2 to 3 taps for an application to open, but the processor speed makes up for it. If you are to compare it with the speed of the SE Xperia, it just blows it away. The Xperia needs MAJOR improvement in speed, it would have been better if they put in a 624 MHz processor in it. It is so disappointing to see such a nice device crawling like that in opening applications.

eventough i didn't vote for it, the Omnia does have it's stregnths, like the 5 MP camera and the real powerfull proccesor. Sucks for me, it's CDMA and not availble in the US. By the way, both SE X1 and Omnia, descriptions are coming up, currently reaserching more about Omnia.

really, do you have a link to this????
In both the Touch Pro, and X1 reviews, you said the bad points were that neitehr could stand up to the iPhone's 16GB, or even the Diamond's 4GB.
For me though, the thing is, you can get an 8GB card for less than £20, so for £20, you nto only have removable, but a larger amount of memory than the Diamond. Plus, I dont need anywhere near 16GB of the iPhone, because I have an iPod.
Thats why I voted X1 and Touch Pro, I'm really torn between the two.

ya, i know what you mean, and that's why i also said in the Diamond and iPhone reviews that they did'nt have a microsd card slot and that was a very weak point on their part, plus not every body had an iPod(I don't). I personally didn't vote for any of the phones with the huge internal storage, beacuse they didn't have a mc slot.
key boards
id go with any with a keyboard and definitly not the iphone apple sucks for programming, and it may be thicker for a keyboard but atleas then u can actuall use all programs instead of just special touch screen programs that have buttons on the scren then u can use ur keyboard for things like emulators and is alot faster for typing and still has touch screen so yeah, and why do u need a massive 16g storage anyways u can just get unlimite with sd slots,
Harvard Professor Warns of Apple's iPhone Strategy
I haven't used any of the phones listed, but have been a long-time advocate of the WM platform. In my years, I've seen many PDAs come and go - Sharp's Wizard, HP's 100/200LX, Psion, and the like. And at this point, it looks to me like the Palm OS is dead. So when I read this in CIO Insight, it didn't surprise me at all:
http://www.cioinsight.com/c/a/Strategy/New-iPhone-Danger/
Many people lust after the iPhone, but Jonathan Zittrain sees danger in the device. Zittrain, a professor at Harvard Law School and co-founder of its Berkman Center for Internet and Society, worries that closed appliances like the iPhone and walled gardens like Facebook will stifle the creativity that has fueled the development of the Internet. Tools such as PCs and the Net itself, which are open by nature and allow people to hack and tinker, are “generative,” he says—capable of spinning off new capabilities from unexpected directions. Tightly controlled devices and services—not so much.

I agree, and from the post where there is the disassembly guide, the RAM looks totally different!!
And 509$ is a big challenge.
apparently, the Fujitsu UMPC that the RAM is for uses 214 pin Micro DIMM Ram. All the info I've read around the internet says this, but I haven't been able to find a disassembly guide (of the Fuji UMPC) to confirm this visually. As to the picture on the Fuji website, all of their ram upgrades use the same pic. Am I willing to be the first to drop the cash to find out? No sir, but hopefully someone will be able to show a pic, or actually pull the trigger and buy one.
I have no idea. I just did a search for 2GB MicroDIMM and got this result in google. Hardware experts should say if it is compatible. But if within MicroDIMM, there are different pin types then it is not good. It just leads to confusion for the consumers.
i've send a email to the support for information about this memory module
to be continue
Pic of the shift RAM attached.
You'll see that the connector is on the side, and it lays flat and clips on to the mobo.
What we need is a picture of the RAM from inside a fujitsu p1610 UMPC. Anyone find a pic, or know someone who has one?

Unfortunately it is incompatible with the Shift.
Sorry
It seems like some other suppliers also has 1 gig, with 214pins connector.
But unfortunately it seems like no one has made a 2 gb which fits.
Found these 2 types, but they are still 1GB:
http://www.memorysuppliers.com/mi1gbpc214pi.html
http://www.techshout.com/hardware/2...for-notebook-computers-released-by-transcend/
I guess we just have to wait for some of them to release a 2GIG
Hello,
as almost everyone in this forum, I'm eagerly waiting for a 2GB memory module to install in my Shift. I'm sure that a 2GB memory module would make Vista really fly and take a lot of the disk-swapping out of it.
I just emailed a good friend who works for a memory company, asking if/when they will be selling a 2GB part, based on the specs that were published above.
Let's see what he says, and I'll update then.

[Q] fake or real?

So, here is the thing, i bought my father a phone from one of those chinese imports, at the time i didnt quite check the autenticity of the product, i looked at the price and purchased, well, my father will never figure it out ir its real or not, im just asking out of curiosity
Here is the link of the item i purchased
www . aliexpress . com / snapshot / 100404380 . html
(remove spaces)
Sorry, it seems i cant post links, but its sort of necessary for this question
Its funny that even the box looks real, what caught my attention were the sound holes in the back
Anyways, looking for some expert eyes on it, its payed already, im not going to regret my purchase or anything, its just out of curiosity, the link above is filled with imgs of the phone.
Thanks in advance.
By looking at the 6th and 8th pictures (bottom of the phone; open back of the phone) in the description, you can easily tell it's fake. The 3.5mm headphone jack is missing from the bottom of the phone, the hardware Home Button (should be between Call and Start) is missing, and the back of the phone does not have that layout. Heck, the provided battery is 1500mAh, whereas the stock HTC HD2 battery is only 1230mAh.

The internal storage and RAM are pretty low. If I was buying a clone, I'd at least get 1024 storage and 1024 RAM. And preferably the snapdragon CPU.
EDIT: But the key thing to realize is that it will probably NOT work with the standard custom ROMs in these forums; it has different hardware. So whatever you get is what you have for an OS.

So 2GB RAM are only 1,8 GB, Sony uses its own values for marketing and counting?

Just seen that.
They advertise the compact as a 2GB RAM device, knowing that they only deliver 1,8 GB.
Anyone else seen that before?
I do not think it s a way to free up to full 2GB as advertised?
Other brands deliver 2GB if they tell their devices have, why not so z5 compact?

Where's the source on what you're talking about? The RAM is always going to be used up by something - the OS, launcher, etc. You're not going to turn the phone on and have exactly 2GB of RAM available.
Sure, but it says 1,4 out of 1,8 used, 3xx free.
That means Limit is 1,8 as shown under Memory, not 2 as advertised. Never noticed that on a phone before.
As soon as the device is running memory is used, but it should say out of 2,0 not 1,8?
@punkrockfan
you're a little late to the party

Also - not sure why you'd want to specifically blame Sony for this
Coming from the technical, developer background:
you have to consider that device drivers also eat up quite some memory/storage (best example: the Galaxy S, GT-i9000: 512 MB advertised, at best 300 [384 at best] available)
it's only the device drivers, it's the kernel (system) itself that also needs memory
so you'd basically have to advertise e.g. 2 GB but plug in 3 or even 4 GB to have full access for e.g. apps
All companies define a gigabyte to be 1000MB, and a megabyte to be 1000kb, etc etc. In reality it's 1024KB per MB, and 1024MB per GB.
You never fully get 2GB, just check your computer eg. your hardrive might be 1tb big, but in reality its only somewhat over 900gb? 16gb ram might only be 15.9 gb!
Well, nice, not sure since when vienna is germany?

derailing the topic like a pro
Home Country vs. Service Provider vs. City
you'd know that if you had taken a look at your own profile
(I moved back some time ago)
Thanks for the notice though
The topic is...that in Windows the full RAM without any convertings of bits and bytes is shown.
Only Hard Disks have that "exchange" from 2TB to 1,8 e.g.
So I was not awaiting that on mobile RAM too.
Really ?
I gotta take a look next time I booted into Windows,
Android sort of is Unix, Linux - so that is more to be expected
yep
BIOS: 3096MB a 4GB Bar
Windows too
But I got an explanation somewhere else as smartphones use flash memorys equal to SSDs so its the same 1000 isnt 1024...thing there )

3096MB ?
that looks more like a 32bit OS limitation though

Plus, on android some ram is reserved by GPU. Unlike dedicated graphic card on PC/Mac which got their owned ram but our GPU shared with system memory.
Same thing as onboard GPU on desktop systems so?
Well 3096 per slot, using several 4GB bars, no 32 bit limitation)
