From what I understand, AT&T uses the 850/1900 GSM bands, which the Omnia 7 supports. I've heard conflicting reports on whether or not an unlocked Omnia 7 will work on the AT&T 3G network though.
I'm a little new to this smartphone business, so was hoping someone with a greater understanding could confirm whether or not it would be compatible. Thanks guys!

The Samsung Website lists the following frequenzies:

I believe I am primarily in a 3G 850 area (with smattering of 1900.)
I have had great 3G connectivity on the Omnia 7. In fact, the notification bar often says 3G+ (which I assume is HSDPA.)
Here is an interesting thing. I also have a Samsung Focus, also on AT&T.
The Omnia 7 gets markedly faster download times than the Focus. Like 25% faster. If I launch two data-centric apps side-by-side, the Omnia 7 always loads faster.
It could be that the lack of 850 is causing my phone to hit 1900 instead of 850 and it is somehow faster?
Or maybe the docs are wrong and the phone can do 3G on 850.
But the speed difference is palpable and I have had 3G or 3G+ everywhere I've gone in Seattle.

Funny thing, that's where I would end up using it. How much did it cost to get from T-mobile UK / how did you do it, if you don't mind me asking?
There's a thread on Modaco; I paid around 19EUR and got an unlock code in less than a day.

Does this means that Omnia7 have tri-band 3G: 900/1900/2100 by default and "1900" was lock away by the Euro carriers? The network unlock code also unlock 1900 band as well?
By any chance does anyone in the Boston area have an Omnia 7?
Sorry for the newb question, but I can't seem to get a straightforward answer - does that mean an unlocked Omnia 7 can get 3G on TMobile USA? I'm in the Chicago area, and ATT is not an option for me.

Ok so I was looking online at the HTC site and see its says:

I honestly do not know what everything means but I know that ATT's 3G runs off of 850 and 1900....am I correct?
If I am then the ATT 3G should work correct? I am trying to figure this all out because I may pick a G1 up tomorrow with my little brothers account seeing that I am with ATT as of now in order to get the Touch Pro.

No dude, get a phone with 3G. Honestly when I'm stuck in an EDGE area with my G1 it's too slow for me to do much more then IM and stuff, I almost always switch to my Sprint rev. a pda when out of 3G. Also, more and more services will come out that use 3G and you don't wanna get stuck behind the curve.

I've had my G1 for two days now and I am in an edge area (no 3G). I'm sure it is alot slower than 3G, but my phone is fully capable of doing anything that it is suspose to. Loading a webpage takes less than 10 seconds. Loading apps from the Market have taken me less than a minute. I'd say this phone is very capable if only on Edge.

I am also in an edge area (3G starts a few miles away). I cannot stream podcasts, but tbh the only time I find myself doing that is when I'm stuck at the airport. Websites load up quick enough...
Right now 3G coverage is only absolutely required if you are tethering or streaming media. I have wifi for my off time at home so no biggie. Now I know there will be some apps that will require that kind of bandwidth, but hopefully tmo will have expanded 3g to my area by then.

The G1 is dual-band UMTS; there's only one version.
A tip though, NEVER use frequencies to refer to UMTS bands; they're confusing and ambiguous. Always use the numbered bands.
AT&T uses bands II and V, T-Mobile USA uses band IV, and Europe uses band I.
The G1 supports bands I and IV.
All AT&T 3G phones support II and V, some support band I in addition.

There are NO phones to my knowledge which support BOTH bands IV and II or V.
What that means is that you can follow a simple rule, at least for the time being:
If it supports T-Mobile USA 3G, it doesn't support AT&T 3G.
If it supports AT&T 3G, it doesn't support T-Mobile USA 3G.

I live in Toronto, Canada and I have phone with Fido. The 3G frequency for fido/rogers are 850/1900. I have found the phone on ebay unlocked that supports HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100.
I heard many posts here about that. I just want to confirm If rogers/fido support 850/1900, however the phone only supports HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100.
Will I still get 3G network or not?
No 850 MHZ available yet. You'd get 2g, but not 3g. I'm sure the 850 Mhz version will be popping up soon.
Yes, but The phone support 1900 and rogers list 1900 as one of the two band frequencies for 3G, so it's should get 3G using 1900 frequency in some areas, right?

It should work on the 1900 band. You just need to make sure that you have strong 1900 band coverage for 3g in your area. Check gsmworld. Com for the maps.

1900 is the secondary band. you'll only get it in certain areas.
and by certain, i mean very few.

I think that if we don't get an 850 mhz US one right away they'll probably get one in australia or somewhere else where 850 is used. Same deal with people who want the HD2 on AT&T.

I can comment from personal experience here.. I'm going to hedge a bet that there will not be an 850Mhz Galaxy S... If there were going to be, it would have been submitted to FCC by now, but I could be wrong.
I bought an OmniaHD last June, which is also 900/1900/2100 and it's never hooked up to 3G in Canada.
I can scan UMTS (using service menus) but cannot connect. I always get an unauthorized access message.
The real issue is that Canadian Carriers are making THE CORRECT business decision by using UMTS on 850Mhz.
850 gives you a larger coverage area, with the trade off of less subscribers per radio. this fits Canada's geographic demographic to the tee.. vast area, not many people.
It could be argued that 1900 should be enabled in metro areas, but Rogers is reserving the 1900 for additional voice capacity (is what I've come to learn).
I guess 1900 would be enabled if 850 became flooded.. so here's to iPad causing conjestion on the 850... iPad being pure data.. Hopefully this will be the case and 1900 will be enabled.
FYI there is an approved 'Tmobile' version of the Galaxy S. Tmobile uses 1700/2100.. and so does WIND

page 4 indicates that the application is for WCDMA 1900Mhz.. GSM will operate both 850 and 1900, however 3G is 1900. (also 2.4Ghz application for BT and WIFI..
So you're out of luck if your carrier has enabled 3G on 850 only....
Hope Rogers enables 1900, because I WANT THIS PHONE!
ps. Page 12 is neat-it looks like they radiate Brain and Muscle tissue equivalents to see the effects of rf The details on test configurations and results are there as well.. I wonder if they'll come out with a corded version....

I live in Richmond Hill. I have been all over including downtown, and it seems to be working so far. I bought it off a seller on eBay that is located in Markham.

@bigbuffalo, thanks for the tip about the guy in Markham, I met up with him yesterday and bought the Samsung Galaxy S. Man What a device!!! I replaced my Motorola Milestone as I had enough of the Motorola BS. Don't get me wrong, I still think its one of the best 2.1 devices in Canada but if you read the Motorola forums you can see what my frustrations have been all about.
I can confirm that the Galaxy S does indeed have 3G coverage all over the GTA (South Eastern Ontario, Canada) including Milton on the 1900 MHz band but if you drive 5 minutes west of Milton it goes down to EDGE. Oh forgot to mention that the 3G is 3.5G as I see an H (HSDPA, HSUPA) more often then I see 3G. I hope this helps.
The device is a work of art, smooth,thin, light, sexy and packs a punch. I would recommend this device to anyone over the Nexus One, Milestone and the Sony X10. The Samsung blows them out of the water in every way.

Glad you were able to get one. It is one superb piece of software. Not sure if your device has the Singtel firmware on it (Asia), but mine did and I found it to lag quite a bit. When I did my research, apparently that firmware really slows down the device. I since updated to JF2 firmware, and rooted, and now it runs fantastic. I would highly recommend to get rid of the Singtel firmware. Enjoy your device.

hmm...i'm pretty much sold on this phone. Just gonna wait until Tuesday to see what they officially unveil in terms of US carriers (AT&T in particular). The (possible) removal of the front facing camera on the Captivate really ticked me off..but apparently they added a 6 axis sensor for gaming etc. Hoping they root the Captivate soonish after launch in the event I opt to go that route and save some $$. Decisions...decisions.....

Anyone else getting really slow data on Telstra? I have tried telstra.wap telstra.corp telstra.internet telstra.iph all of these AP's give extremely slow data, and the phone symbol at the top flicks between 'H' (assume HSDPA) and 3G at times. I'm talking 0.4mpbs.
My friend is on Optus and his *cough* iPhone is getting 4.45mbps, in comparison my speed is nowhere near this speed. I am in metro Melbourne.
Anyone else have slow Telstra experience or know a trick or setting to help out - would be much appreciated!

i could be wrong, but i dont think the galaxy s supports telstra network very well, if at all. dunno, not real tecchy, but its what ive heard round the traps. something to do with the bands the phone supports (900/2100 or 2200ish) and telstra is 850 something or other. smarter people than me will be able to clarify.
Correct, Telstra uses 850mhz and 2100 (apparently). But, only some variants support 850, and Telstra are releasing their own for that frequency. So I'd imagine that 2100 simply has lower coverage (Optus on the otherhand uses the more standard 900mhz frequency).
If you already own the phone, you may wish to consider moving to an optus based network (such as Exetel for Virgin). However, it is also entirely possible/probable that the galaxy S ships with a chip that supports 850mhz, and it simply needs to be enabled (I have seen threads which showed a way to apparently enable it).
Or, it may be just reception probs

It possibly does, but which country did you purchase it in? Remember, some countries might have had it disabled (because they don't use 850, or have other services on those frequencies).

Hi Andrew Purchased in Australia from Allphones "unlocked". Tried the 850 band turn on and various other fiddles in that debug/phone settings area relating to 3G and HSDPA - unfortunately the max I've seen on Telstra is 0.40Mbps, my friend gets 4.45Mbps on iPhone/Optus
Coverage in my area is usually great, I'm in Melb metro area and normally full bars.

mate it might be worth a look over at whirlpool forums, they seem to have a fair bit of stuff about telstra and the galaxy s over there, so you should hopefully find some help
Hi, thanks for all the information, heres the low down:
Telstra has WCDMA 2100 and 850 bands, but the Galaxy S badged versions of this phone only support quad band in GSM, it is triband on WCDMA and unfortunately 850 isn't supported Telstra will be selling a different version of this phone shortly ("Captivate" badge!?!?!?) which WILL support their 3.5G 850 network at full speed.

Multiple times ive looked up this phone in the past. Multiple times my dreams have been shut down because the frequency bands arent the same as Telus Canada. Multiple times have people told me, no, its impossible, wont happen. Then how come both the Windows Phone 7 and the dell venue pro site both have 1900/850 MHz EDGE? i realise EDGE isnt the fastest bug around but its much faster than GSM and its still is by definition 3G. and i was led under the impression that only GSM would work.
So what im wondering is that, ive heard that a new model for US is coming out in January, would the GSM/EDGE frequency be the same, just with 850/1900 UMTS difference?
And basically all i would be waiting for is a bamp from 3G to 3G+?

Telus in Nova Scotia HSPA+ network runs on 1900/850 (PCS/CLR). Its probably the same frequencies across the country.
I'm a new user, so I can't post links yet... however if you look at the telus mobility page and go to the Coverage tab, it'll tell you that they use 1900/850 for their 3G+
the wikipedia article on UMTS frequency bands also says telus uses 1900 and 850.
HSPA+ is part of the UMTS family. The Venue Pro lists UMTS 1900 and 850 as bands it can get... I'm assuming that means it can handle HSPA+
I'm just making assumptions, but it seems like the Venue Pro will run the HSPA+ network on Telus/Bell in Canada.
I sure hope it can, because I want a venue pro on telus myself!
Dont make a mistake, EDGE is NOT 3G and the frequencies the DVP uses for 3G, 900/1700/2100 will not give you 3G on the 850/1900 frequencies, that is for EDGE only.

That is correct.
Only 3 providers in Canada will enable you to get 3G with the Dell Venue Pro.
Those providers are Wind Mobile, Videotron and Mobilicity.
The phone supports AWS 1700, not UMTS 850 or 1900.

Ah! you're right. I looked at the phone specs again, and it listed GSM 1900, not UMTS 1900
well... that put a serious damper on my fun ... I really wanted one, but not if it can only do 2G around where I live.
Now to see what bands the omnia7 supports... I hope I don't have to settle for one of the ****ty phones released in canada. Seriously, we got all the worst ones.

I cannot get any network other than Edge to show up, and my speedtests are incredibly slow! On my Galaxy Nexus on Tmo's network I had to have the IMEI number updated somehow when I started my account, but it appears Tmo is closed today. Is there a way of doing this, or something else I need to do to get my Quantum to speed up, or is it hopeless?

That's because AT&T and T-Mobile use different bands. AT&T phones are only compatible with T-Mobile 2G. If you're lucky, T-Mobile will be refarming spectrum in your area, so you can get 3G, but apparently this isn't the case for you.

Are you positive about that? I have a Galaxy Nexus that worked just fine once they updated the IMEI number, and now I have full use of Tmo's network on it. It was an ATT phone initially...

The Quantum supports the italicized bands.
The Nexus supports the bolded bands.
As you can see, the Quantum's supported bands are used for 2G.
That is unfortunate... so everyone else using this phone is using it on ATT's network, not Tmo's?
Also incredibly disappointing since I was told that the networks were the same and that a phone that worked properly on one would work on another...

Yes, most users are on AT&T. And as to your second point, I've never heard anybody say that...
I'll go ahead and bump this with one more question. With the announced merger between MetroPCS and T Mobile, is it safe to assume that MetroPCS' frequency spectrum will work with T Mobile phones? I believe I saw at least one band that the Quantum would be able to use.
I get Tmobile 3g on my Quantum, I'm in an area where they have 1900MHz coverage though.
