[Q] Question about secondary microphone - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed in all of the promo videos for the mt4g that there was a little hole on the back above the speaker. I can only assume this was for a secondary mic. When I went to the store to play with the phone, there was no hole. However, on all the official cases at the store, there was a little cutout for this mic hole. Anyone know why the production units don't have this hole?

The secondary mic was probably cut as a cost-cutting measure, sadly.
And you're right, the cases do have a hole for it.

Heh you're right. I just noticed the cutout on my case extends to that area.

There's a little bump on the battery cover over the speaker.
I assume this is so if you lay the phone on a flat surface you don't totally muffle the speaker - good idea.
They should have done this on each side of the camera, to protect the camera lens. Ah well, good reason to guy a case I guess.

They should put a speaker on the front too so you can hear clearly what music you are changing thru on the screen, which IS on the front. I've been wondering when I'm going g to see a phone with a speaker on the front also

[Q] whats that little (gold plate) on the back of the MT4G!?

Hows it going guys!
After many days of using this awesome forum, I decided to finally join!
So to start things off, I will be asking you guys a question....
Anyone know whats the little gold plated thing on the back, behind the batt. cover of the phone, wondering if it has anything to do with the battery, or some sort of sensor???
There is also a white area on the back of the actual battery cover of the MT4G which I think is the contact point for the gold plated thingy!?
Thanks guys...
Regards,
blackeye
I think it has something to do with grounding, maybe for the screen. I could be way off.

sounds possible!
the reason I ask is because I decided to run my glacier without the battery cover using a case then i noticed my battery started acting funny, it didnt hold its charger very well and didnt charge fully......wondering if the 2 are related somehow!?
"Little gold plated thing" = contact point.
If it's behind battery cover, and battery cover has a matching "window" of bare metal for this contact - look for more contacts that touch the battery cover.
If you only find one - it means the battery cover is used as one of the antennas for this phone (cellular / WiFi / BT).
If you find several - it might be used as grounded shield.

thanks man appreciate it!
So the glacier theoretically should get great reception then...I'm guessing!

The little gold contact on the battery cover has been discussed here before, probably in a thread that is buried. The conclusion: the ground contact point for the screen. Pic attached to show what the OP is talking about.

I couldn't find such thread in 10 min of googling, so I did what was probably done back then - verified the location of main antenna (which is on the plastic cover with camera glass), checked WiFi and GPS reception. None of those changed. It leaves either BT (which I can't check) or, indeed, grounding.

Just a thought but I could have to do with the sensor for temperature.
Temperature sensor can't be embedded in the back cover, and the point is for electrical, not thermal contact.
Upon further review, only 1 of the 3 mt4g's that I have has the gold plate at all. It's possible it could be nothing significant.

The thread I referred to earlier is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205155.
In the first post, in the update area at the bottom of the post, it points to a thread in the sensation forum. The pics in that sensation thread show that they have a silver colored plate on their cover almost identical to the mytouch4G's gold plate. The plate is conductive paint that creates contact between the metal of the back cover and a gold pin between the sim and sd cards on our phones. It is located directly above the main board of the phone, near the bottom of the device. The pin can be bent or fatigued to no longer create a good, solid contact with the plate.
The main solution proposed in both threads is to gently lift the pin with a pick to raise its height and create better contact with the plate and is done to have better touch screen response.

That is interesting!
So if true then the concept would be useless if we have cases on our phones...since our hands won't make contact with the back cover anymore....right!???

No, it isn't using your hands to complete the circuit. The phone chassis is mostly metal, but the main board is surrounded by plastic. It looks like they found it more cost effective to ground to the cover than run a wire to a part of the chassis. Looking at the sensation cover, this makes sense. The sensation cover is metal and plastic and they put a contact point on the metal of it too. If it is anything like what I deal with at my work, then they are just trying to provide the phone with a system wide consistent ground. Without grounding the back cover, it could induce or conduct a static charge and possibly shock or create interfere to the main board. When the ground has bad contact, we notice a lag in screen responsiveness, but other things may be happening that we don't notice.
Someone mentioned that the antennas are located near the camera, which is true for at least the WiFi antenna. You will see a drop in signal if you hold the phone near the camera. They also mentioned that the top area of the phone has metal readily available. I would suspect that the other antennas are there too.

Having a case in your phone will not be an issue. The grounding happens using a self-contained circuit. The back plate may just be used as part of that circuit. Additional static from being in your pocket will be grounded with or without a case on the phone.

Crap in speakers

I do construction for a living so at times I'm exposed to metal shavings and what not. Is there a way to clean the ear pice and speaker out on my evo cause at times its terrible. Sprint store will replace speaker but they don't do a thing about ear piece. Any help would be sweet.
Mine is the same way from locksmithing, unfortunately I never found a fix just a work-around. I got a bluetooth headset.
There is another thread about this already for evo 4g. You need an earth magnet and it requires taking apart the phone. It does work, it did for me at least. I thought I kept blowing the ear piece speaker and it turned out to just be metal shards in the speaker (I work in construction).

Making a phone holder headband to record a concert. Where's the mics that record vids

I am going to try to make a phone holder that I can strap onto my head so I can record a concert so I don't have to hold it the entire time. Since the another s4 can be used as remote viewfinder, my friend can make sure everything is in focus and in frame. Does anyone have any good ideas how to do this? I bought a s4 armband that I could modify. Where are the mics that are used to record videos? I want to make sure the sound is as good as it can be so I need to cut out some holes. Can anyone else think of any other types of solutions to record an entire concert hands free?
The two little holes at the top and bottom of the phone.
Also if you install faux/ktooz kernel and then buy the faux sound app you can turn down the gain on the microphones

Thanks for the advice. I see two holes at the top, one of them is very tiny and the same size hole as the one at the bottom. I covered up all of those holes with my fingers and recorded a video of me talking loud near my phone and I could still hear the sound. Are you sure that these are the only holes that are used for recording sound for videos? Is the larger hole at the top one of the holes that records sound or only the identical super tiny holes at the top and bottom? Thanks again.

Yes they are definitely the mic holes. The reason you can still hear recorded sound is likely because sound can still get it through the USB port and headphone socket. Or maybe through the case itself.
Did covering the holes muffle the recorded sound?
The reason there are two mics is to do with noise canceling I believe

Speaker Defective?

When I was in a phone call, the earpiece suddenly became very fuzzy like there was a hardware issue. I have had the phone 4 days and this suddenly just started, or I just discovered it. During my troubleshooting, I noticed it was the way I was holding the phone. I was holding the phone with my pointer finger near the power button and by just applying light pressure, it caused severe interference with the earpiece speaker. I could actually feel the bass and vibration from the ear piece through the back of the phone.
Sadly, as happy as I am with the phone, this could be a deal breaker of this is a total design flaw. Can anyone else confirm this issue? Basically press with your pointer finger around the power button and see if it causes interference with the ear piece. Feedback would be appreciated.

Seems to be caused by, or made worse at least, by wireless charging. My initial guess is the magnet in charger is screwing up the earpiece.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
OK, exchanged my phone for another G6 and I'm having the EXACT same issue. When I'm on a call and there is the slightest pressure applied around the power button, the earpiece sound becomes extremely distorted. Having a cheap plastic case on it causes distortion, too.
Can anyone else confirm theirs does this, too? Make a call (voicemail or something) and while listening apply slight to moderate pressure various pressure points around phone.
I highly doubt I received two duds in a row.

My G6 also started acting up like that also a few days ago. The earpiece while on call was distorted when I press my finger at the back panel. The distortion doesn't happen when I hold the phone by the sides. Did you get to fix yours?

I have a camera lens protector from Nillkin. I have a Spigen Thin Fit case. However, I also have a DBrand-like skin at the back. I found the problem. I think the skin added thickness while combined with the case. When I removed the case, the distortion disappeared even if I press the back. So in the end, I just removed the skin. No distortion even with a case.
I still think the back plate of G6 was poorly made. It shouldn't be like that even if the phone is kinda squeezed.

So after experiencing just this, I did a little investigation. It would turn out the plastic causes interference with the speaker. The technology used is interesting, because the "speaker" for the earpiece is not directly behind the screen on the front of the phone. The speaker is actually behind the camera. The phone channels the sound internally towards the earpiece. The plastic causes vibrational echoes which disrupt this "channeling" or redirection of the sound from the speaker to the earpiece. The case is not the culprit, it is the plastic over the area of the camera. The case merely causes enough pressure to initiate the disruption.
Crazy, huh?

Having the piece over the camera only didn't cause issues, but any piece over the glass back of the phone did.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
I have a case and screen protector and have never had any of these issues.
Have you guys found a fix for this issue?
Yesterday I applied dbrand skin on my phone and noticed the same issue. If the back panel is pressed while on a phone call the ear speaker is crackling.
It doesn't matter if the call volume is high or low and it doesn't matter where I press the back panel. It seems to be in random places, like closer to the bottom of the phone or the power button.
While this is not a big deal, it gets very annoying when you are on the call and place the phone between your ear and shoulder to make both hands free. At that time even a little pressure from your shoulder causes massive sound distortion.
lg g6 ear speaker
Certain cases you use on the G6 will make the ear piece speaker sound like a buzzing bee. I can attest to this owning three of these phones. As one of the cases I bought will make which ever phone I move it to would make it sound like a bee. BZZZZZZ.
The one one particular has a soft rubber inside and has a hard shell outside that slips over the inner piece and then squeeze's
the the sides of the phone to hold on. When I switched case or removed buzz went away. So it has something to do with either too much pressure on the back of the phone, or is blocking something else. Not sure but just by sliding back the hard outer shell it went away. Hope this helps. Its probably not the phone. Thought I would re-edit after making some new observations with my G6's The phone earpiece will definately start buzzing if you apply pressure to back of phone just below the power button any where from 1/2 inc down. Let up and it will go away.
ohh thanks daredevil i'm not alone... My speaker start this issue few days ago(After water cleaning)buzzing like heaven fart... My first idea--: water kill but i read this topic not 100 water damage..
I couldn't stand that buzzing bee/crackling sound with my phone, so I sent it on warranty. They replaced earpiece speaker along with inner back cover (the one where wireless charging part is located in US models - mine doesn't have wireless charging). I got the phone, tested and.... damn that crackling sound is still there... So I sent the phone next day back to the service. Got it today and to my surprise the buzzing sound is gone. Even if I put pressure on the various parts of the back panel, including the area underneath the POWER button, there is no crackling sound.
Funny thing is that, engineers in the LG service couldn't reproduce the issue the second time phone landed on their desk.
This means the fix in my case is the mystery.

I had one on mine I had cut it out of an old protector. One piece covering camera and lenses. Phone was buzzing on earspeaker.
I cut it in half and left open the part so that the flash is not covered. Works better now.
I had the same problem with my phone. Whenever I had my hands full and I tried to hold my phone with my had and talk the sound would get distorted. I sent mine in for the repair, when I got it back it was partially repaired. I could still hear the distortion, but it wasn't as bad and more pressure was necessary to cause it.
