[Q] How do you change the default camera app? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just downloaded a new camera app, how do I make it open when I press the camera button?

What camera app?

Vignette. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it open when I press the camera button. Any ideas?

Ditto for camera 360.
Much better then stock app. It is set as default, but does not really function as the default - and not just the from the button.

Any new info on making another camera app function as the default including the ability to use the dedicated camera button?
If this is not currently possible, would the ability to add this functionality come from an update by the camera app people, or would this be something the devs might work on adding?

I don't know about changing the default app for the camera button, but it's definitely possible to map the button to shutter from within an app. Retro camera has an option to select a hardware key for shutter, I have it working with the camera button.

Sorry to rehash an old thread, but I have the exact same question as the OP and was hoping that someone had found a solution in the last few months.

Can't find this app - looks like it was removed...? Can anyone point me to the app, or suggest an alternative for getting the side cam button to point to a non-stock camera app?

Bump...I still haven't been able to find the button shortcut app anywhere. Could someone who has it post the apk? Or is there another way to remap the camera button now?

To me, that sounds like the current rom doesn't have that option. When I had the MIUI rom, I was able to change the default camera to camera360.

............. why are you bringing up such an old thread again??

I don't see your reply anything of helpful?
because this thread was brought up while I was doing a Google search for changing my camera button default(application shortcut) and it so happens if it wasn't for this thread I may have not known about button shortcut.apk as someone here mentioned then several people here claimed they could not locate. so if someone else google searched the same issue at least they come to a solution. and not just a bunch of people claiming they don't know what to do. who cares if its old you bumped the thread with such a useless post? what's the point in that.

[App Req] Hardware Zoom In/Out

Hi,
by now we all know that we aint getting any multitouch, but the necessity of multitouch still remains. If you are using default browser/skyfire then you have to find a spot in the website to click (where there are no links), then the Zoom In/Out comes up. If you are using Opera, then if you double tap it zooms out to a default value (nope, you cant change the zoom out level).
Both of the above methods are not that great. I was wondering if it is possible to make an app that would use the volume button to zoom in/out. So when you are in browser or map or pic viewer, you press the volume button, it zooms in/out.
I think this app would be awesome
The only problem is I dont know how to make it
So can any dev work on this PLEASE. I am pretty sure lot of us and also people with other phones could use this app.
Thanks in advance
Bikram
PS: Non devs pls back me up in this (might bring some attn)
I'd be interested in an app like that.
EDIT: Not a dev, but I see a problem with that...wouldn't that mean an entire browser needs to be made? (Unless SkyFire or Opera made an update for their browsers)
EDIT2: Another thought, do any of the Android browsers support add-ons? I'm going to figure this out tomorrow
it could be possible though you need the source code of one of the apps weather it be skyfire or opera.
I think the devs have the source code for the default browser. Right??
Hi,
there are APIs for Creating Browsers (its not very hard actually) but i dont know if the same APIs allow adjusting of zoom level, if so, the second question is if we can get the events of the Volume buttons.
Lets see
I am not sure what you are talking about, but I am sure there are API's for volume. Even if not then we might be able to find it in the decrypted ROM.
What im saying is that i dont know if it is possible to block Volume Adjusting and instead use it for Zooming.
My guess is yes though.

App idea: Volume button used to take pictures (HTC Evo)

i'm not a developer but i had an idea for a tweak/app that would be useful to me and hopefully a lot of other people. I just came home from a vacation and took a ton of pictures with my Evo and grew frustrated by the lack of a dedicated camera button. i was wondering if it would be possible to make one of the volume buttons take the picture. I would want this only when the camera app is open of course. I know the volume buttons can be re-routed because of how they are used to scroll up and down through web pages in the Dolphin HD browser. Can anyone tell me if this would be possible or if its already been done? i've done some research into this and didn't come up with anything. I thought i would ask the great group of developers we have here at PPCG. Thanks everyone!!! (HTC Evo)
+1 Was just looking for something like this.
Searching everywhere for this. Alot of people would appreciate it!
This is a great idea! I'm surprised it hasn't been done on the EVO yet. At least I haven't seen any App/hack that can make the EVO do this. I hope it's possible and I hope someone can make it happen. Fingers crossed.
I like the idea...but have a slightly different motive. I'm on an X which has a dedicated camera button, however, when I'm using it as an audioplayer in my pocket, while it's possible for me to turn the volume up and down with the rocker, I can't actually pause the audio...so I plan to find a way to re-route one of the buttons somehow to be a play/pause button...

PLEASE developers! evo users would love this!
Sounds Good To ME!
This would make things easier. Sometimes you feel you didnt touch the screen right or hard enough, this would take care of that. +1
Count me in... This is the only thing that prevents me from using the evo as a point and shoot
This is already available via the Camera Zoom FX app on the market. Not free, but is there. However I have found that it is buggy as hell.
Bugs I have noticed:
1. Pictures won't save. It's like they are stored in the cache. You take a picture, go to gallery to view it and it won't be there. If you reboot the phone it will be.
2. The "FX" don't always work. There are several effects that come stock with the app. They frequently don't do what they are supposed to or won't load at all. I have found that you can exit the program via the back buttons and then start it again to get the FX to load, but even that has stopped working.
3. It actually asks you to download Task Killer the first time you open the app. Going on about camera apps using memory and all. So in other words it has a memory leak and instead of fixing it they want you to manually kill the task.
It does what some in this thread are asking for. However I wouldn't suggest you buy it.

[Q] Front Facing Camera Question

I'm tying to figure out how to use the front camera for taking pictures. I can do the video stuff no problem, just not take pictures. Seems silly the native camera app would not offer this.
From what I read, there should be an option in qik to do this, but from the one I downloaded from the market, I'm not seeing this option. I'm running Frankenstein and have checked through all the various mod paqs and there is no qik app in there that may have this feature enabled. What am I missing?

Inside the camera app... Click the Top left icon on the screen and select Self-Shot.
Is that what you are looking for?
Perfect thanks so much! Guess the internet docs on this not working through the camera app are wrong.

Gtalk with Video function

Hey,
sorry for my English ... I've had Google translate.
I have a Legend with the CM7.2.0 and wanted to use Gtalk with video function.
But when I run Gtalk and connect myself I see everything, except for one button video function.
Can one do something that does work?
We don't have a front facing camera, and even if we did GTalk would not allow a rear-facing camera to video chat.
Perhaps there's some patched .APK on the web or on this forum that would allow for that type of functionality, but wouldn't you agree that conversing with the back of your phone be a little strange?
An alternate solution would be to use a computer, I'm sorry.
But try looking for that app file, that'd be cool.
Hey,
thanks for the answer
Edit:
Why i must typ the stupid capture?

[Q] Replace Stock Gallery App with Quickpic?

I really dislike the default Samsung gallery app and I'm wondering if there's a way to specifically make it so Quickpic can be accessed through the stock camera app by pressing the preview button in the top left corner. Freezing/disabling the Gallery app does NOT prompt you to select a default gallery app when pressing the preview button.
Instead, it prompts this message:
(Because I can't post links to external images, see the first attachment.)
I should probably add that there are no permissions for gallery to open as the default gallery, so that's not the issue. (Quickpic is set as the default).
(Because I can't post links to external images, see the second attachment.)
Is there any possible way to get the stock camera app to use Quickpic as the default gallery? I'm rooted with no custom ROMs, just default TouchWiz.
Thanks in advance!
Nope

I'm sure he would've preferred that answer when the last reply in this thread was made.
Please don't revive old, dead threads.
I'm not posting this for the sake of OP, I'm posting it for anybody who asks the same question, gets directed to this topic by google, and gets disappointed by the NO answer - while in reality the answer is YES it's possible.
And by the way I've had the same question several years ago, when I had a Samsung Galaxy S, then again more than a year ago, when I got an S3. Didn't hear about Xposed then, so I just accepted "it's not possible" as an answer. So even a year later, the answer is still relevant and might be useful.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work with my SGS3. From my understanding you should uninstall/freeze the default gallery app and next time you try to open the gallery from the Camera app, the phone should ask which app should be used to view the picture.

I tried freezing. It won"t work either. My problem is getting to albums from the Contacts app, when I need to add a picture to a contact. If I freeze the Gallery there will be no Image option in the Contact Photo window opened for selection of the photo source for a contact. It means I cannot get into my albums for photo selection. And since my contacts photo album is organized by name, I am having hard times when looking for a right photo for my contacts. QuickPic could solve this...
Don"t understand how this so basic and obvious feature is missing in such a complex and long time running on millions devices OS?

I feel your pain, I have similar idea. But maybe the blame is misdirected, the Contacts app comes from Samsung, doesn't it? They made some of their apps too tightly integrated with each other, not giving the user the flexibility to choose the gallery app. I'm planning to try another ROM (e.g. CyanogenMod) to get a look at the pure Android experience.
