Dell Streak is living in stone age? - Streak 5 General

I think i wont be wrong if i say this " Dell streak is living in stone age"
coz Google's Android platform turns 3, Gingerbread due on 11 November
and where we are
Factory Shipment:1.6
Update:2.1
Dj Steve Unofficial :2.2
Official Update 2.2: Sorry i havent got my cristal ball with me today
cheers

agreed the software is behind. But the hardware is right on par. To me the more important thing is the hardware - because the software can be upgraded (as seen with Steve's Froyo).

I too was skeptic about not having a recent update to Android on this device. Regardless this device is miles ahead of my old Touch Pro 2. 2.2 is coming and I'm sure there's a lot of behind-the-scenes legal mumbo-jumbo responsible for the schedule. Dell is new to the smartphone game and I'm sure there's a learning curve.

Anyone on XDA is probably here for the same reason. We want the BEST for our phones, but, waiting on carriers to release updated roms is like waiting for paint to dry.
The suits in charge of the carriers probably have to have a dozen or more meetings before they release an update, if they even update it at all.
Another reason I think the carriers should get out of the hardware business and
just be a provider. Yes, probably more headaches trying to make everything compatible, but just look at the Asian markets, and the numerous options they have for hardware. What to the states get? A few phones a year.

1.6 came out about a year ago, the streak was probably slated for its release then. its amazing the small gaps between major software releases from google. im just hoping froyo for the streak comes out before gingerbread does. i like knowing my device runs on the latest and greatest, even if its only for a day.

I for 1 was happy it came with 1.6 it gave me chance to play with 1.6 and 2.1 and next is 2.2 and after 3.0 so in my eyes its like haveing 4 different devices

In fact if you change the launcher you can barely notice the differences between the Android versions.
I started with adw and have more recently been playing with launcher pro.
Except flash, wifi hotbot, new gmail in 2.2 ;-)

Do we know for a fact 2.2 is coming to the already sold Dell Streaks and not just the ones sold after the update?
Hi cirian75
Yes Dell stated before the Streak even started being sold that it would be getting an OTA direct from Dell to 2.2 in September. There is no way they would just put it on new Streaks and not upgrade those already sold especially as they will only be a few months old.
Marc
cool, just gotta track one down now for not stupid money.

Like Dogmann said they don't like to Affect there image specially at the moment of the launch of the new tablets running Android OS with 7,10 & 11.5 in screens.
Yup you have to remember that the Streak is Dell's flagship smartphone.
They have an entire ecosystem of tablets coming out all based on android.
To screw up and not put 2.X on the phones is not in their best interests.
on one of Dell's blogs (direct2dell) its been mentioned a number of times about an OTA froyo, even just a week ago about Dell and Adobe Flash
http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...0/06/23/dell-and-adobe-flash-player-10-1.aspx
As I mentioned in my Streak post, when the Froyo upate comes to it later this year, it too will have Flash capability.

Don't hold your breath for a September release; if it happens this great but prepare yourself for a Oct/Nov release so then they are can start working on update the Streak to Android 3.0 by Dec/Jan
can someone tell me has the streak go 512mb of ram program memory? i know it has a 512mb rom chip and 2gb flash storage what about ram some say 256mb some say 510mb whats the truth? if its going to able to run gingerbread 3.0 min spec is 512mb.
Yes 512MB, but like all such androids right now only 399/408 is usable to apps. I think its a software thing, so if we get gingerbread all 512 will be there in some form.
This is awesome so we know that the dell steak will capable of handing gigerbread man thingy majig.

I don't know when the next update is but I read they would have the "Gingerbread" update on the first of January... that is a lifetime away .. What would 2.2 give me that 1.6 won't? Came with 1.6 BTW .. I had Nexus One and I don't see any difference really. Maybe I am just not that well informed, plus I have only had this less than 24 hours .. Comes unlocked to ATT and T-Mobile. [those are the 2 cards I tried.]

2.2 is much better than 1.6 in many ways. Wifi hotspot, voice text entry to name a few!

Hi shEEEsh
Well 2.2 really is a major leap forward compared to 1.6 to 2.1 it is far more then just a few added apps or UI enhancements one of the main improvements is the Jit compiler i think that's the correct term. Anyway when they added 2.2 to the Nexus One with all the enhancements it brings performance improved by something like 200-500% which anyway you look at it is huge. The difference between 1.6 with the customised Dell UI and apps is hardly noticeable when compared to 2.1 the same won't be true once we get 2.2 and i just hope it comes early September or even earlier via Custom Roms.
Marc
... not to mention internet shaing via wi-fi tethering (without having to root and install an app) and USB. That, plus flash and the performance enhancements makes me very much look forward to 2.2!

2.1 news

I heard today from a guy at a local store, that he heard from an inside source of SE that the reasons the update is takibg long is because they devepoperw are having lag issues caused by the increase in color denisity (65 thou to 16m), theyr working on optimizing hd recording where thyr trying to get higher fpses as well as optimization regarding 720p playback... other improvments that he mentioned where problems known in 1.6 such as low incall volume as well as the poor battery perfomance...and that the update might be posponed to late q4............ this is not an official source so its possible that some of he said if not all wasnt true i just hope the update will be worth the wait
I will be crushed if I have to wait till end of Q4
2.1 is outdated now , we need 2.2 like the rest of other devices
sony should do it fast there is lot of competition in the market like desire, xdroid etc
They should release what they have and fix any issues with updates.

Lemme tell ya, coming from a nexus one running 2.2 I was not impressed with it compared to 2.1. froyo was supposed to be such a big deal and to me nothing really changed. I'm Perfectly happy with my x10 now and ill be happier with 2.1....more so than I was with my nexus one with froyo.
That are bad news hope they will not come true. But on15.September HTC releases his desire hd. As soon as it is to buy here I will order it.
I'm wondering if I will get first 2.1 or the desire hd ?

Q4 now?
So I guess it's confirmed for release in early 2011. Can't wait.
Wow late quarter 4. Now sony is taking the piss if this is true.
They should skip SE customization in the first release and release with stock Android 2.2 without wasting more time to solve issues with their 2.1 release.
If this is true and 2.1 come end of Q4, it will only make SE look even worse than coming out with 1.6 now. By then all new Androids will probably already come with 3.0.

Not exciting. All hearsays. I'm already desensitized.
why are people bothered about the SE 2.1 when we have some of the best dev's known on the task of getting us to 2.2???
dont live your lifes waiting for a SE 2.1 as chances are you will get more and more wound up about it.
I think Sony Ericsson should just release a clean Android 2.1/2.2 for our device and then later on one with their custom UI and let the users decide what type they want on their device in the future.

[Q] Android 2.3 How Long Will It Take HTC ?

With Android 2.3 Gingerbread due out before the end of the year. How long do you think it will take HTC to push out the upgrade ?
IMO HTC are not the fastest of companies to update their OS the latest google offerings.
The new Samsung is rumored to be running 2.3 out of the box.
Whats your thoughts ?

when I see that my working colleagues with a HTC legend are still on android 2.1 I doubt a software update in the first year... :\ Although DHD may be (one of their) top phones. But lets hope HTC improves on that, I would even pay for Android version upgrades...
Isn't Gingerbread rumoured not suppose to allow for any overlays.? If so then I doubt it will come to the DHD.
in my experience owning HTC handsets with sense, there will only be 1 update during the life time of the gadget. being 2.3 or 3.0, don't expect it to be any time soon, especially when current DHD is not every widely available yet.
I say 6-8 month at least.
Its one annoying aspect of owning HTC sense phone, they are not a software specialist.
However, the fact that Samsung is getting Nexus Two with Gingerbread probably means HTC is under pressure to have at least one cracking phone with 2.3. We can only wait and see if they choose to update DHD or launch a new line.
Really hated Galaxy S and gutted that's what the Nexus Two will be based on
People always say HTC isn't the best with updates... but who is, aside from google with the nexus one?
I agree no one is quick in getting software updates so no reason to just slag off HTC.
I really hope HTC don't take too long. But then again i plan on rooting and loading a custom gingerbread rom, stock of course. Now about that root...

I have to diagree.
HTC is the first and biggest androids producer. They made Nexus One which is great when it comes to software support. If anyone they should be setting the standard not dragging the progress. They said it themselves that they wanted to benefit from the "Google Experience", and frankly speaking they are the last brand on earth to have excuses for not keeping up with android progress.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but my point being people buying DHD shouldn't put too much hope in getting gingerbread immediately. DHD hardware is superb and the sense overlay on 2.2 has got lots of great features, and its probably just a matter of time before DHD get rooted and 2.3 be ported over anyway.
I f none of these matters as much as getting 2.3 straightaway, hold on for a couple more weeks and get the Nexus Two is probably a better idea(and wear the pain of a samsung phone, I m not falling for that again)
if i recall gingerbread was roughly estimated for december/janurary
thought there were still issues with oracle and google over android using dalvik vm?so I thought, yes me only- not starting a rumor- that that might have delayed it as dalvik is part of java and ISN'T open source?
anyways your device doesnt get 1 update only
look at the mytouch 3g? had android 1.5, 1.6 and 2.2 3 upgradeds in its life?
now look at the desire, htc call it a high end product. it was on 2.1 is running 2.2 and will definately get gingerbread when it comes out, but no time scale will be given for that.
HTC are better then any company in giving updates if anything compared to other companies.
when an company decides to put its own overlay is when things get delayed. if they keep it vanilla releases would be quick and easy, but how do you make your device unique? what features do you add to make you stand out the crowd?

Galaxy S to get 2.3 start of Q2?

http://phandroid.com/2011/01/22/rum...axy-tab-to-get-gingerbread-beginning-of-q211/
It's a rumor I'd like to believe. The overseas Galaxy S has had 2.2 for a while now, and it's believable that after so many months, they might get 2.3. This works great for us because...
1- we might get it
2- if we don't, someone could use the i9000 code to make a copy for the Vibrant.
With this whole froyo mess, I see Samsung getting us 2.3 eventually just to appease us and bring the best out of our hardware (optimization for Hummingbird). If they can pull 2.3 for us sometime by the end of Q2/start of Q3- It would redeem them for the froyo debacle.
Honeycomb/Ice Cream, whichever, I just don't see us getting officially.
Edit: nm

SamFirmwares, the originator of this rumor, is a site that has gotten us a lot of Froyo leaked roms. I don't think they would say this unless they know theres a GB rom out there that they are trying to get their hands on.
After flashing from stock 2.1 to Axura 2.2.7.1 I am enjoying a 2.2 ROM. I cannot wait until 2.3 gets out and the devs here play with it. The updates in it look promising, and the power management should definitely push the stellar battery life from these awesome ROMs.
Later than i9000
If history is any indication, we'll get Gingerbread when Honey Comb has been out for at least 3 weeks and thousands of hate tweets have been made.
I wouldn't hold my breath on it.
At this point, I'm just waiting for a new good phone to be released on t-mobile so I can drop my vibrant asap! my frustration has less to do with samsung updates and more to do with the failing GPS (even the latest version of Nero does nothing to alleviate my issues), lack of LED notification, and cheap plastic-feeling build quality

That would.be quite incredible since the Vibrant 4G is set to launch next month with Froyo. Their new flagship phone launches with Froyo and then the older, nearly identical version gets Gingerbread? I don't see it. T-Mo has every incentive to keep the original Vibrant a step behind so they can sell more new phones.

I doubt we will ever see Android 2.3 on the original Vibrant. 1 year is an eternity in the world of Android smart-phones. There is so much competition and the pace is so fast that manufacturers will opt to put their best & brightest efforts into optimizing code for upcoming devices.
For example, the Motorola Atrix probably has a lot of manufacturers trying to figure out how they can make their devices that come after it stand out.
The only thing the Vibrant has going for it is that it shares most of its innards with 2 other phones.

To the person who posted scores, Quadrant sucks, no use to test for real life performance. And the vibrant is not really that cheap feeling, would you rather have a few scratches on the backplate or a dent that cannot be replaced?
But sure, anything above 2.2 will probably be mostly theme overhauls for android, maybe a few optimizations for the hummingbird in 2.3 but nothing above that most likely.
for me froyo is the end of the vibrant. my only hope is the devs here who are working on it.

http://phandroid.com/2011/01/22/rum...axy-tab-to-get-gingerbread-beginning-of-q211/
read that, then read some of the comments.
"Everyone, this is possible. Keep in mind, they could be talking about Galaxy S, not the American Variants, or they could be. Two possible scenario:
One: They are talking about the European Galaxy S(has had 2.2 for a while, just got 2.2.1)
Two: It could mean 2.3 could finally be built and ready for carriers to add their bloat and send off as OTA(or Kies*shivers*)Remember, Froyo for the Galaxy S in the states has been ready for months now, it has been the carriers, not Samsung."
I still think the US Galaxy S phones will get at least the update to Gingerbread, at least sometime in the first half of the year. I think that'll be the last update the phones get though.

It's ridiculous that I should be appeased by a 2.3 release 3-6 months after it's been released by Google. I want a new release on the same day that Google releases a new version and I want it from Google. Manufacturers can tweak and release it whenever they want to. At this point, I don't care. But Google needs to fix this. Make every manufacturer provide all the device drivers for all phones sold in the past 2 years available for every release and we should be able to get the latest Google experience for our phones.
The fact that 2.3 is not yet available for Nexus One shows that Google needs to spend some time making this their top priority.
I think a long as the carriers push two year contracts they should support the phone that long.

Seriously though... why did they spend so many resources putting lipstick on 1.6 (which was very cool / revolutionary / different) Such as the app drawer in the notification bar, power widget dropdown, etc.
I do like that the 2.2.2 releases of Froyo are AOSP enough that the UOT works without issue!
BTW: Softbank is a carrier (Japan?)
It was a minor update, but what it does say is that the team hasnt stopped working on the streak, they merely havnt been releasing any builds for whatever reasons. The update was built on june 30th and that was only a month ago. OTAs usually take about a month from building -> testing -> OTA
Whatever reason they are taking so long, if/when GB comes out it should be even closer to stock android then 2.2 just like 2.2 if you ignore stage ui.
Softbank is a cell carrier in japan, they sell locked US model streaks and were the first to semi-officially recieve 2.2. 301 was a softbank rom, but it wasnt officially released.
Not Exactly...

I am sorry but you are wrong. Dell is NOT putting out any more updates, including ROMS for the Dell Streak. You will not see Gingerbread.

Except the captivate is getting gingerbread.
So, that means it is up to Dell to fight the giant at&t and get them to approve an update. To me this stance, among other things, communicates that Dell is halfheartedly interested in mobility. I mean, they brought in a mobility guy then canned him and shut down his division at the end of last year. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703688704575621101353557126.html Dell either doesn't want to work very hard or they are exiting because they don't think they can compete.
Contrast that with Sony Ericsson, and Samsung updating their 2010 models. (Ok, so SE isn't updating their at&t version, but this is XDA so we know that doesn't stop ambitious modders.) Those companies are showing commitment to the customers who signed TWO YEAR contracts and are stuck with LAST YEARS (2010) devices on Froyo for another year. These guys are differentiating in the place we wish every company did... Their customer service. Bravo!

So, is it worth flashing this rom?
Thanks Nick and TheManii for the info regarding Softbank...... Strangely, Softbank's website shows their cellular network as being W-CMDA.... so there must be a non-SIM version of the Streak.... either that or my Dolphin browser "translate" add-on doesn't translate Japanese too well LOL Thanks again all !!
They are probably focusing on the 10.1inch tablet coming out very soon. From what I gather it wont be a consumer device and probably not a streak.... but then again who knows they just released new stage software to sync and be a remote.
According to fards who speaks to ttmhe devs in irc he is convinced gb is coming offically.
How can it not with the streak 7 being so new.
Sent from my Dell Streak

WCDMA and UMTS are more or less synonymous (at least from a user standpoint, they might not be the exact same thing from a techical standpoint) with GSM 3G.
WCDMA is the 3g family (i think)
UMTS is the first 3g standard
HSPA is a faster revision (though revision isnt the best word to use)
HSPA+ is '3.5g' by the old definition and '4g' according to current american carriers.
WCMDA and CDMA are similar in how they transmit over the air, but completely different in application. WCDMA is a specific GSM technology, CDMA is the superfamily for CDMA devices.
To muddy the waters even more there are a couple of CDMA carriers in japan, but softbank is not one of them

Until someone provides me with a clean nandroid of ANY softbank rom this update is useless as it's a patch on TOP of previous softbank roms and not a complete pkg like normal streak pkgs

I'm afraid hope is abandoning more people than myself. I mean, if Dell
finally gets GB to our Streaks, will it be before Ice Cream shows up?
Will Dell Streak customers really still be interested in a phone with
an OS that is one generation older than the present one?
I'm sure I won't...
Thanks for the clarification, Manll...... Also I do see the point in having the latest OS, but I also realize that a manufacturer will not provide upgrade paths for an aging product forever. At least with Froyo, I think we're at least on a sustainable platform that will remain relevent for some time to come... I just wish we had native video calling like Honeycomb. None of the 3rd party apps seem to work unless the recipient also has the same video call client installed.... and that's just not a realistic option for most...... Oh well, we can't have everything I suppose
so looks like we stuck to buy streak!!!! now i realize it was really bad choice to buy streak! wish i bought galaxy!!!!
"Fards" is alarmingly quiet these days. It would be very interesting to
hear if there are any news on the subject, from someone "inside".
