Many builds discontinued - I wonder why? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I can freely speak for everyone that we are more than just thankful for all the builds we have tested so far but one question tickled my mind in the last two-three days: why are all senior members giving up and discontinuing their builds? Do they know something we don't or it's just coincidence that they all have other stuff they are busy with?
I do not want anyone to think of this thread as ungrateful discussion but just simple question towards: is Android on HD2 becoming dead project or there is still some hope for NAND version that would possibly even get OTA updates?
I feel sorry to see so many good builders discontinue their builds
Once again, for the guys that are still here but discontinuing their builds, thanks very much on everything you did so far!

People have to study, succeed in life..
Later, in their free time (like usual) they will be able to do whatever they wants..
I hope you can understand my point of view.

There probably just getting bored with it to be honest.

^^
Most likely that. There hasnt been too many big improvements lately, theres only so much you can do with a build aside from several customizations.
Whats important is working on the kernel and optimizing it to get everything working properly. Hastarin just released R8.1 with several people saying its really good. I plan on updating later tonight. Im glad He is still working away and getting it perfect!
Things will pickup again once Gingerbread is out Im sure.

Plus there has been quite a few new cooks on the scene

Mdeejay is prolly kickin their @ss now hes also makin kernels....

It's because the summer holiday's is over, and ppl ave to go to school/college/university and have an increasing amount of workload - so they don't ave enough time to spend on this as they usually would.

And his new S1 kernel for his builds worked even better than Hastarin's v8.1 on my HTC.

Another reason to give what you can as an incentive to keep em working

so is that pretty much it for ROMS?

Before I rooted I would read all these posts about how great the roms would be after Sprint released 2.1. So finally I rooted this weekend, and as I look through all the ROMs they all have major issues, and a lot of the major players have moved on to the EVO. So is that it. As soon as 2.1 comes to us we are left with a bunch of roms that don't work any better, or worse, then stock? That is unless I'm willing to cut out all of HTC and Google software.
Please give me advice as to what I do with this rooted phone now.

Not all of the phones have major issues if u read a lot of the roms they tell if they have any. Also there r stock roms that can be overclocked. We've had three or four devs leave to the evo. That not the end of the world plus they left with final full working roms. If ur not happy with something then for it itself or realize nothing is perfect and that these devs spend a lot of there free time cooking there roms and get real tired of hearing people complain about something that us free. Be a little grateful. Read, search, to a little homework and then ask the questions u have inside ur head before u post a dumb question
Look around, no one here is going to hold your hand.

I would chalk up the majority of the "user problems" to user error such as not wiping between flashes or bad 3rd party software with memory leaks or preventing the phone from sleeping...
Sadly a good number of devs went on to the Evo, even worse is some left in the mid of new releases without fixing some bugs.
Even though a couple of the dev's have moved on, there are still some great ones working on the hero. There are at least 6 or 7 fully functioning roms built on 2.1 right now and there's even some movement on 2.2.

Lol, I have been a member here for more then a year, but I don't post because I know what you get here when you post, I had 2 people call my question dumb or call me ungrateful..
Anyways, I was not being mean to the devs. I think their feelings are still intact (those who have not left)
As for reading and searching the forums, which the "positive" posters repeat like a mantra.... well I have been reading, I've been reading like crazy, and All I see are problems with the Roms because no one ever posts positive feedback.
However, I gather from those more productive posts here that the ROMs are very good quality. So from here ill try them out myself, and refrain from posting again for the next year.
Thank you and sorry to all those with tender feelings who where offended by the simplest of posts.
Just an FYI for everyone Fresh just put out a 2.5.2 BETA to donors.
I assume he will leave this one in 100% working order before he dumps the hero for good.
I think he said in the email something along the lines of "last build before FINAL" but don't quote my quote.
I haven't run a damaged ROM in weeks - I went from him to Darch which I feel is the end all.

Aloysius 2.1 is rock solid, fast, chocked full of goodies, and did I say, STABLE. Blows any stock Sprint ROM out of the water. DarchDroid 2.7 is good and fast if you like AOSP. And I liked RegawMOD a lot too (use Honeybun OC kernel for extra speed). Plenty of others out there as well. I really liked the Blue ROM but my Hero won't load it. Just try them and quit worrying about it. Use apps2sd and then nandroid and you can go back and forth without losing your apps.

No nand on hd2

I know a lot of the devs on irc, and i have just been told by a respectable dev that cotulla is no longer continuing his work on nand for hd2 and has moved onto other projects. I myself wishes cotulla all the best and thanks him for everything he brought to the hd2 scene.
Shame that nand will be discontinued but lets not forget he did a lot for us in the early days.

Wait & see.. ...
There's been too many false rumours so I'll only believe it when there's an official statement.
CHANGE TOPIC TITLE!
Just because one dev is no longer involved in NAND doesnt mean no one else will couninue his work!
um....
the understanding I had was that cortulla was moving on to do meego for hd2, that he had already done most that he had to for nand and that now others were doing the little stuff and ironing out the kinks and what not. I truly hope this to be true and also agree title change cause nand can still go on without him.
I hope this to be the case.
LOL it's funny how a single internet issue can create stories like this one
Last I heard from Cotulla is what was said above, he has internet connection issues and nothing more.
Or who knows... maybe he's been abducted by aliens (they want NAND on their starship) and that's why we don't see him around!!!
From what I read so far is that Cotulla has finished his part on the Nand project. He already released his MAGLDR to the devs, it is a tool to flash Android kernel to the nand(internal memory) of our HD2. Now there are a few developers trying to iron out some of the bugs of this new nand/kernel.
Cotulla probably now has moved on to a new project, many says meego but from the last video he posted we saw WP7s booting on HD2.

Quite honestly I am not even sure if I would switch to NAND version as I am sure would be imperfect as the first android builds were on our sd cards before... pretty happy with my setup, speed, how it works - therefore, my fingers are crossed for the rest of the xda brothers that are expecting NAND version

This isn't the first time cotulla disappeared for a while. After he released the first hspl... while he was working on USB host drivers for hd2 winmo, he vanished from this site for a couple months and no one knew what happened. Some of us were even worried that something happened to him. Then as suddenly as he was gone, he was back. Never went back to his USB host drivers for hd2 winmo, but released hspl2, then hspl3, then worked on android. Hopefully he won't be gone as long this time and hopefully he goes back to his projects for the hd2 ... but he had his own life... and has done a LOT for this community for free, so even if he moves on to a new device and doesn't finish the projects he started, I am still very thankful for what he has already done for this community. Hopefully if he leaves hd2 development behind, he will release the code for magldr so other devs can work on it, as he kept that project closed sourced and it can't really be worked on or released by other devs.

Unless they can carry forward the work done from SD Android to NAND?
Can we please, for the love of jesus have this thread closed.
Or atleast change the title.
All OP has proved is that he had no idea what cotulla's role in the NAND development was. That, and the fact that he clearly has not kept upto date with the NAND news.
This topic, is bull****, the devs are intelligent people, and they just will make the up, in the end of 2011 , to dual core devices.
They know, that just have to gain, staying with HD2.
I'm not make this year any up, to G2, DHD, Nexus 2, WP7s....or something else......I'm happy with HD2 like I think Devs are.

Thanks for making this waste of a thread worthwhile...........
Wow, just wow. /facepalm.
If you're not a developer, don't read 2 or 3 lines in the irc logs and think you know what's going on. (Hell, I'm sure people on here don't even realize that he has more than one name on irc)
Plus, chances are they told you it's not happening so you'd stop bugging them! BE PATIENT! It'll happen when it happens. Would you REALLY like it rushed so half of the users on this forum permanently brick their phones?
to be fair it can't brick your phone since it's flashed over magldr which is flashed over HSPL so worst case is you'd have to reflash winmo over hspl,
but the rest of your post holds true and valid and anyone thinking they have learned something from this thread is sadly mistaken.

MrBobrowitz's CM7 CrackFlasher Builds

Well here we go!
After what I saw today with Protekk (sad to see him go), I am offering up my services and time for building daily builds of CM7 for the Mecha a.k.a, the THUNDERBOLT.
I will try my best, as he did, to have daily builds, but for me it will most likely be nightly only because of my current schedule.
I am currently cleaning out my build environment and re-syncing as I am writing this so hopefully by tonight I can have a build up if not tomorrow
I will be hosting my files from here:
Http://www.onix-android.com/cmcrackflashers (Nothing here yet do not worry)
Here's to the Android Community!

Not to say that your efforts are useless, but aren't we basically going nowhere without a kernel source? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm really grad that you picked this up if I'm wrong. I'm just wondering if your wasting resources compiling something when we won't have radios until a kernel (like I assume, but can be wrong). In either case, thank you and will be flashing as soon as I see that we can call and text, even if there is no data at all!
You are correct...somewhat.
Since we do not have source (yet) there are some things that will not work as well as they could be. That is not to say we wont get source soon.
HTC is usually pretty good with this.
This thread is also aimed down the line as well, being a crackflasher myself sometimes buildbot will go down and we still want out nightly build
thanks for stepping in.
Well in that case, thank you very much. I have to admit I was a pretty bad/good crackflasher. 3+ builds a day on my inc. I've been hearing that it'll be between 90-120 days from reports and emails coming from HTC regarding the kernel. Hopefully they won't keep holding out on us. I'm eagerly waiting to rip it apart and start patching my own kernels. You have a dedicated flasher as soon as we get that. If I can get vmware running and my dev environment back up I'll help you and compile opposite to you and get more builds out for those that want.

I remember mine quite well. Had it for 3 months and loved it to death. I sold it to my friend as his old clameshell broke, and he really had an eye on my phone. I knew it was well tested, and exactly what he wanted, so I reluctantly upgraded. I still miss it very much, but I know it's in good hands. CM7 can't come fast enough though...

Or the Droid Eris. A lot of the devs here (jcase and I among them) got their start on the Eris.
It was an actually just an "HTC Incredible". The phone was in no way a droid. Verizon dumped so much advertising into the droid name and it is so well known they only marketed it as a "droid" to boost sales.
Check the box, the phone settings about phone, and the htc website. Verizon is the only place you'll find droidn linked to the icredible

Fascinate development, dead?

Update: development is not dead, JT has resurrected it...Cm7 is amazing!
Forgive me if upset a few people with this post, but is it me or has the dev scene for this device died?
I remember the old school days when I had a G1 on T-mobile, we had a new rom practically every other day! I would hate to not to give credit to the amazing devs we have for our devices like JT and company but as of late things seem have died .
I remember a few months back devs were saying, we cant do much because we dont have froyo source...now we do and the scene looks identical. I pruchased this device because of its "raw power" which back in November was unrivaled, but looking at the vibrant forums and the epic there's tons of roms to choose from, VZW gets no love.
Before you guys get upset and some of my remarks, please understand my POV. Lastly, I realize that devs dont get payed to do this and do it as hobby thus I have no reason to complain, so this is just an opinion....let me know if you guys feel the same or not......
There's still a ton of development work, just nothing totally new recently. Everybody seems to be working on what is already there, just fixing and updating and whatnot.

What we are waiting on now is GB source.... LOL
In short you are pretty much right. Mostly everyone has moved on to bigger and better things. Now that all the spring goodies are coming out there are less people here to develop.
What we are waiting for really is someone to step up to the plate and take over. The devs that we did have provided a great foundation for someone else to work on.
That being said... the phone is still overpriced for what it is and Samsung has provided some practically unusable code to start with, from my understanding at least.
I can see the Vibrant forum being busy, as they have CM7 now, and likely other AOSP and AOSP based ROMs now, plus TW based ROMs. Not sure about the Epic, but I think they have a semi-functional AOSP base as well, and the Nexus S going the Sprint probably helped them out significantly. However, we're stuck basically with what Samsung gave us. The source did help out significantly for kernels, as it gave us something to work from that we didn't have before. However, the platform source did nothing. Also, there are only so many ways you can configure a ROM based on the stock software. If jt and kaos can get the last few pieces of CM7 fixed up, I'm sure you'd see development take off again, but until that happens, or until we get a new release or source, it will likely be semi-stagnant around here.
JT is working on cm7 I assure you. Latest build was today released in irc. Based on .35 kernel. Everything works but radio and sensors. So that's really good work if you ask me. He'll get it up to speed, jt is a very clever Guy.

Yeah, if camera and MMS work, and he gets the sensors/radio working, the man is a God, a MACHINE. Well, I look forward to that.
Evil fascination came out with a new build today, he is also planning on a bunch of themes for it (2 released already, 5 more to come I think)
well this phone technically is out dated in terms of whats come out since. and we finally have workjng froyo roms which is what all the hype was about. even with home computers you cant keep updating, eventually things dont matching up. just like with these phones. im happy with my fascinate and everything thats been released.

Evil Fascination had an update tonight. It runs fantastic and the theme is awesome. Im sure the community rom is going to have a nice update soon to.
The devs for this phone have been fantastic, they made this phone worth having even when it seemed like 2.2 would never see the light of day.
After the experience I have had with the fascinate my next phone will for sure be a nexus. Even if it means jumping ship to a different carrier.

If anyone is wondering EVERYTHING is working, including hw/sw codecs, Bluetooth, wifi, etc. As stated before RIL functions and sensors are no worky, but JT said that radio was his messup and should be a quick fix. ;P

development is relative...we never had a ton of kernels/roms/mods etc because we have a relatively small community
we still have several source built kernels, 2 versions of cm7 (one of which sounds like its advancing nicely) and several touchwiz based roms
if you want to really step back and look at things, we have mods from sbrissen no other phone has (or at least had first as they kang him quickly)...
we have miuiwiz which is a feat never done before (getting miui launcher working on anything but miui)
so for those that just sit around and wait for stuff to be released so they can flash every 5 minutes...too bad...go get a more popular phone so you can flash the kanged rom after kanged rom every day
or you can actually learn to do stuff for yourself like many have

^^^^exactly.
If you sit back and enjoy your phone with the new roms when they do come out, waiting for updates and new stuff comes quicker than you realize. Hmmm, I wonder who told me to enjoy what I have a while ago.... and in all honesty, do you really think the fascinate is out dated? My phone STILL runs circles around my bro in laws tbolt. And if anyone questions our devs ability....have you herd of punk kaos? Or jt1134? Or adrynalyn? Or sbrissen? If you are tired of waiting, go back to stock....you will realize what they have done for our phones.
I never once doubted their ability. Like I said in the OP , we a are lucky to have what we got. My point was that things seem to have died down, not sure if its the phone or the lack of interest. Back in november this was androids flagship device, and, I purchased it thinking that with its hardware and our bright developers, it was going to be a beast. I'm proud of the work done but until a fully working aosp like cm7 comes out, I dontt think ill be fascinated. All the touchwiz roms are fine but slow down eventually. Just expressing my opinion fellas.

Just expressing my opinion fellas.

what do you mean "slow down eventually?" ive never noticed this
and was there ever a time when tons of roms/kernels were coming out aside from immediately after an ota/source code drop/leak?

@Nitsuj17 this is a classic case of something that all people struggle with: a selfish nature. We, as people, are never really satisfied with anything. I doubt even a FULLY functional CM7/GingerMIUI would please people. It's just our nature. We are insatiable. This is not a flame or an attack of the OP, it's just simply an indictment of all people, myself included. Just my $0.02.

JT and I were talking earlier and it seems like Coolya and the gang helped with some kernel fixes that seemed to have helped a lot. So if all goes well, we SHOULD have official CM7 support coming soon.
If anyone is wondering EVERYTHING is working, including hw/sw codecs, Bluetooth, wifi, etc. As stated before RIL functions and sensors are no worky, but JT said that radio was his messup and should be a quick fix. ;P

So if he can get the radio working, we can get official CM7 support? JT is the man....
When we all probably switch phones we will still have a beast mp3 player if you ask me.

just one last thought...as for what is/isnt being worked on and released
jt and pk are still working on cm7 and seem to be getting closer and closer to a very polished product
imnuts and nemesis still work on kernels
com rom and miuiwiz are still being worked...and will have lots of new features when they are out...these things take time though, we could have constant updates or less updates, but of more substance

Things getting a little stale???

From the development side of things, I'm thinking that just about everything that could be done with the Evo, has been done as far as porting and builds. I know ICS is the new hot ish, but I don't think the Evo has the hardware to run this thing to its full capacity. We struggle squeezing new Sense roms onto our phones and there are always issues with something...even with AOSP, there are limitations. I love rooting and romming and flashing as much as the next guy, having done so for a year. I'm stuck on Sprint for the next 2 years, thanks to emancipating myself from my girlfriend's contract, I had to sign a new 2 year agreement and lost my upgrade til next October, if I didn't do that it would have cost a $120 termination fee...so I'm stuck with this Evo for almost another year and not happy....I wanted to upgrade to the Galaxy SII, was told there is no way, and I don't have $600 laying around. The EVo is an amazing phone, but I think its time is about up. Thank you to the Devs for all their hard work in keeping the EVO as relevant as possible...catch you on the flip
Sent from my Evo, there are many like it, but this one is mine....
Dude, ICS ports, 3.5 ports, Cm9, MIUI ICS....
There's a lot going on still
One should not give up so quickly many tricks can be learned I can tell you there are a few kitchens warming up

I just don't think our EVOS can handle these Roms ...and if they do, it wont be at the full potential...look at the 3.5 roms ...you gotta jump through hoops just to get enough memory to download an app. I like your optimism though HipKat....None of these devs even have an Evo anymore...they are just doing builds because they get bugged to death about and so many of these HTC phones are similar in hardware. Here's to hoping we can squeeze these things on our phones and they can run right! ^©][€€¶~

nah, give it some time. There are always peaks and valleys of development. Besides, the EVO has like 400 more ROMS than any other phone out there, it's safe to stay around for a while
I feel your pain at times man you feel like you seen it all man trust me sooner or later you gotta cure the itch by playing wit your own rom that's what I'm starting to learn playing with apps first theming then rom theming then full out rom build try it man this site has so much info and knowledge.....and flame wars lol but really don't just be a flasher become a contributor and your feelings will change

I have ran several 3.5 roms and never once had an issue with lag, battery life, or storage. I mainly run aosp, but I have flashed pretty much every rom available for the evo, and they all run just fine. I'm not too sure what hoops your jumping through, but evo development will be around for quite some time.
So i kinda see where you're coming from, but than again I kinda see where other users are coming from too. I think some devs have finally left the evo and gone somewhere else. I don't see many updates from the older devs myn, virus, azitio, but i'm also seeing new devs or maybe just new to the evo , are making some great some great roms. The ICS rom I've been messing around is really fun and fast. Makes the Evo enjoyable. So I wouldn't throw in your evo for a new phone quiet yet. Not to mention , i still think the EVO is a top contender than some of these new phones coming out. The Evo 3d wasn't anything special, and galaxy II wasn't that awesome either with all the hype. Duo core processors in phones are great but, are still NEW. I'm sure something special will come out eventually that will manually wash your car, but for now I'm happy with my Evo

ICS takes less space than stock sense. I don't think memory will be an issue.

Sprint for life. I'm working in a rom myself, just kind of playing around you know something for the girls, since I'm a girl and am totally into roms, mods, themes, tweaks, kernals you name it. Hope you stick around with us for a while, because you want to not because you have to.

That's totally cool, not many girls are flashers, and I've never heard of one dev'ing. I wish I had the time to mess around and build a ROM, but life happens. We'll see what shakes out with ICS and Sense 4, hopefully our Evos can handle it...Good luck with your project, can't wait to see it!

You sir must be the luckiest man in the world to have every Rom you flash work perfect for you...there are probably 50,000 posts just in the evo section that would dispute that claim....Umm lets see partitioning your SD card, everybody wants to know is a2sd baked in or supported, d2sd, finding right kernel for performance and stability. Having to run performance tweaks, scripts and superchargers....ponderous man..f'n ponderous

Yeah right now, how about when EVERYTHING in the rom is functional? Right now these pre alphas are nowhere near being fully capacitive and are already 20mb more than cm7 is...don't forget your 60mb gapps package on top of that, and then all your own apps, themes, pics, and music....

ICS is defragmented, meaning it needs less resources to run as it has a far better optimization than previous builds.

As far as I've seen, the HTC Evo 4G is the most modified phone ever. There's more ROMs, kernels, and tweaks than any other phone. I believe there will still be more cooking and developing to come, but with the new release of ICS, devs are knee-deep in code. So just be patient, when they get all the drivers sorted out and a stable public release, things will be booming again.

The Moment was the same way. Untold amounts of Dev work and is still being Dev'd to this day! lol
AS for jumping through hoops, A2SD is standard these days. A Simple flash of A2SD when you flash your ROM isn't jumping through hoops. Nor is moving Dalvik to SD Card. One simple command in terminal.... done!
I, too, have very very few of the problems that people complain about on any ROM. Very few have given me issues.
I was kind of feeling the same for a bit...I've been on Synergy for a while because I haven't really seen anything else worth flashing, and I absolutely HATE ASOP (AOSP? whatever.) ROMS. I don't understand how anyone could go from the amazing, fast, and simple Sense dialer to a dialer that takes forever to actually find the contact in your list then call. Now with ICS ROMS starting to come out, I'm excited again and hoping someone will make a nice Sense ICS ROM so I can enjoy my phone even more.
You could bite the bullet n pay the etf. It's cheaper then 2 years of contract payments...
