How do you root the MyTouch 4g? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can we use SuperOneClick Root to root this device? Any ideas?

No, that's for the Galaxy S phones, to root your phone download "VISIONary" from the market, that will root it for you

There is no root yet. Have to wait

visionary works but it will unroot itself the second you reset the phone, it will be fine if you leave quickboot on though

This is crazy, but why would someone want to root this phone?

Custom Roms, Free Wireless Tethering, Overclocking, Undervolting, that kinda stuff.

for me it was to use titanium backup

What app do you use for Screenshots? I used Visionary and ShootMe says it can't get permission.
EDIT: I ran Visionary a second time and got it to work...

I've rooted every Android phone I've had, only to add features that it didn't have, but this phone, no thanks, no need for root - it has everything I've ever rooted for ready to go right out of the box!

same for me.

Can't you already do that? I don't really see the need with this phone though, seeing as it has 1GB of internal space.

I use titanium backup with tem root OK. However, I want to do image backups, and need permanent root to be able to restore them.
Alos, currently using a cleaned up base ROM on my Nexus. I would really like to see a TMO cleaned-up-cleaned-out ROM someday - they loaded this up with way too much junk.
Will fiddle with the work-arounds in the meantime, but permanent root and cleaned up ROM is the only way to go.

Root or wait for Android 2.2?

Hey guys, I'm new to the Android community and I'm completely in love with it now that I had the phone for several weeks. Like every other phone I get, I'm always eager to customize it in all the ways possible.
So here is my question, rooting seems simple enough with the great guides you guys have here. However, I've heard that Android 2.2 is right around the corner with new great features. I read that if you upgrade your firmware, it will un-root your phone back to stock.
I'm already hungry to try the new features that a rooted phone can do but I'm thinking that this update is worth waiting for since this phone is new anyways.
Any opinions?
Steps for success:
1. Root phone.
2. Wait for 2.2.
3. Download a 2.2 rom with root.

Not sure how rooting your phone is going to solve your battery issues? All that rooting does is give you root (superuser) permissions on your phone. You can do this to remove the bloatware that came preinstalled on the phone, run various apps that require root. But I can't think of any way that it's going to allow you to save battery life that you couldn't already do non-rooted.
My only reason to root was for wifi-tethering...
I know the newer version of Facebook is a battery eater. I switched back to the older style and my phone is happy again.
Root is great.
1. Remove bloat apps
2. Remove the annoying T-mobile jingle
3. Root Explorer is fun to play with
I think thats all I've really done so far. Well I should that I've wanted to really do so far.
Rooting isn't working for me otherwise I would have to agree :-(

Unrevoked...what will it do?

Okay...I am curious. I what will of do to my HTC Evo? What will of allow me to do and what problems will it cause? I see people writing about having problems when they root. Is the Unrevoked way a "safer" generic way of rooting?

I'm new too flashing roms and all and I just rooted my evo yesterday from Unrevoked it was kinda easy I only did it cuz I wanted the free wireless tether app.my take is u get seamless options.I'm hoping I can install a custom theme to my stock rom.gl
Is it does it give you an option to unrest in just in case you have to take it into Sprint for warranty purposes?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes you can unroot if you need to. You don't do it through unrevoked but by running something called the stock ruu. Its an .exe file. Its pretty simple and once you start reading threads and flashing roms and such you will understand more.
I used unrevoked a few weeks ago and have no problems. Only good came of it. I have free WiFi wireless tether, removed unwanted bloatware, and get to use some apps that only work with rooted devices.

you just use unrevoked 3. the forever radio s-off exploit is included. people have gotten bricked phones from it, but not many. i'd run it on mac because it is by far the easiest (one click versus windows driver install, more drivers, instructions, one more driver, then one click).
then again, i would use the zikronix method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
it is much more difficult, but once you are done, you are an android expert. you know everything there is to know (almost). with unrevoked, you know bubkus...

Roots and NAND Unlocks EVO for rom flashing and updating firmware components as well as the bootloader,
I used Unrevoked to root
Unrevoked-Forever to NAND unlock,
and a restore to stock via a RUU + Unrevoked-SON will basically undo EVERYTHING and get you back to an Out of Box configuration
weehooherod said:
Unrevoked roots AND nand unlocks. FORGET ABOUT UNREVOKED FOREVER. You DO NOT need it. Unrevoked forever makes your phone easily rootable even if you install an over the air update. But it unlocks your bootloader forever which permanently voids your warranty. Root your Evo with Unrevoked and just don't accept an over the air update. So if you even get a screen saying there is an update available just click no and carry on with your life. Easy enough. Head over to xda once you see that update notification and there will be a pre-rooted version of the update for you. This way you'll still be able to unroot when you need warranty repairs.

Unrevoked Forever is included in Unrevoked3, and no, it's not permanent. Flash the S-ON tool and run a RUU, and you're back to stock and your warranty is good again.
my favorite part of uv-forever is if you run an ruu but dont flash s-on then you can easily re-root.

Gingrerbread & Rooting

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

I agree but i guess thats the price you pay to get the stock 2.3.4 right now
I spent most of the weekend researching what to do about this very thing. I was rooted but stock rom. I figured I needed a decision on what I was going to do before the OTA arrived.
After a lot of research I decided to go full S=off and install the Virtuous Unity ROM. I like Sense and it is a 3.0 ROM. If you wait for TMOB you'll only get 2.1.
EVERYTHING in this ROM works. None of the
"YOU GET THREADED TEXT MESSAGES!!! but the camera doesn't work"
Like in the bad old days of windows rooting.
I only wish I'd done this 6 months ago.

Is it your intention to return to stock and run the phone unrooted with the 2.3.4 update or are you just concerned about having 2.3.4 on your phone? If you are looking for the most recent version of of Android OS, then MIUI is currently running 2.3.5... If you havent tried GenerationX mysense ROM, it is the newest update with bloat removed and i think there isnt anything broken with the faux's .7 kernel. Try it if you like stock, I bet you will like it.
I just want to get this straight, if someone can give an answer. My wife's phone currently has iced glacier and I want to go stock GB. If I take the phone to a Tmo store and ask for the update, it will take the phone back to stock and unroot? If so should I at least uninstall super user?

You could go to the store or you can download the same T Mobile sdcard update that Gr33nF0x posted http://megaupload.com/?d=N8XGHXJC (IF YOU ARE ROOTED YOU WILL LOSE IT)
1. Download the PD15IMG.zip file posted
2. Put file on the root of your sdcard (don't put it in any folder)
3. go to settings/applications make sure fastboot is unchecked (on 2.2.1)
4.power off
5. push and hold volume down and power till you get into hboot
6. it will scan file when its done it should ask you to update push volume up

To be honest I don't have much expreince with this phone as you can tell by how old her current rom is. That and they don't understand how this phones works. Anything that is done in a "Temp rooted" state will be returned to an OE fashion once the phone is turned off. So even if you do delete it. It'll come back.
I want to temp root because im scared to downgrade and perm root.
Well, looks like you're out of luck. Temp-rooting won't get you anywhere, since the system is protected by the bootloader lock, and without perm-root you won't be able to do anything. As already stated, all you do under temp-root will not stick, and will be lost on first reboot.
So you either give up the idea of messing with the stock OS altogether, or grab the balls to do a downgrade and perm-root. Nothing left in between...
Rooting this particular phone is what makes it really worth having it, IMO, so long as you're comfortable with the process.
