Anyone has this problem? For example if I lay the phone down on my bed, I won't be able to hit the back button. The entire touchscreen responds done though...

That sounds very strange.
Well, I'd hate to say it, but are you "pressing them wrong"?
What I mean is, we all know the buttons are a little tricky, how the touch sensitive part is near the top of the button. Could it be you've trained yourself to easily press them the correct way while holding, but when it is lying down you end up pressing it lower? Due to the angle of your finger when you touch it?
I've never had any trouble when the phone was laying down, and just tried it out again right now. I do have to touch them in the exact same spot (shifted a bit higher) as when holding it.
When I first got my N1 I noticed the same. Just hit it a bit higher

Odd, I always had this problem, never considered it much of a problem. Mainly cause I hold it 99% of the time, but I did find that if I touch it lower, as in touch the bezel at the same time as I touch the button, no problem.

This! I thought the same thing as the OP when i first got mine, but you get used to it.
I've also experienced this... but as the others would say just hit higher or you'll get used to it.

Having vibrate on for button press helps a lot because of the issue with having to hit the buttons higher.
It does get a little annoying but small price for such a good phone really I'm loving it regardless. It does seem like a strange thing though I've not come across it on some of the other android phones I've had before.
Had never happened for me. Its the same if i hold it in hand or not.
does anyone here like the home button???....the button on my s3 seems very loose and clicks.....it doesn't feel right....anyone else notice this or is my button defective....not only does it feel loose, but I hate it....its to low, and is almost hard to get to with a case on......

The button generally is fine, it really sounds like your is defective, it shouldn't click as far as I know

I hated it at first since I had gotten so used to not having one but, now I LOVE it.
Mine isn't loose or anything, Maybe you should go back to store and see what they think?
It is kind of low but I use the rock quicksand case which leaves the bottom area open so no issues there.
The physical home button is pretty annoying. All capacitive like in the One X was much better.

mine is the same.. the right side is lose compared to the left side and it clicks everytime i favor clicking the right side..
Rogers is sending me a brand new one in the mail..
and my phone gets MAD hot.. temperature says 48degrees C right now
I love it! Mine is solid and silent; yours is probably defective.
Capacitive buttons are MUCH better than physical ones.

For the people who don't like it: did you know you can wake the phone using it instead of the power button? That's something you can't do with a capacitive home button...

If you don't like the home button, you can use this program called Task Changer to put a virtual home right above the physical one:

Given the great placement of the power button in Samsung phones, that's nothing to write home about.
The home button works perfectly. It has a positive feel you just don't get with the capacitive buttons.
Simple Question I think:
How to reboot a LG Nexus 4 when it freezes. You can´t pull the Battery out. Is there a Key combination to do so?

Does this also apply when flashing roms and kernels ? I am thinking about scenarios where you have a boot loop after a bad flash, does holding down the power button still work ? This is the only thing holding me back from buying a Nexus 4.

nipe it doesnt work. i tested that on HOX. the only sollution is to go to fastboot and to choose recovery?

That is a completely different device.
Worked on the Galaxy S2 also this way, you can hold the power button while booting (bootloop) after several seconds it completely shutsdown.
It's different on different devices. On HTC it's holding +vol,-vol and power button together. On others it may differ. But any phone with non removable battery has a hard reset button combibation afaik.
I was under the impression that if you have a small phillips screwdriver nearby you can unscrew the two screws on the bottom of the device to access/pull the battery.
Works fine on HOX.
Holding power button has #1 priority.
Holding power whilst in a bootloop will turn off the device, hold it a little longer and it will reboot.
Holding power + volume down takes you to fastboot.

On the G2x, holding Vol Up + Power does the trick, HOWEVER, there have been times when my phone has froze and that did not reboot my device and I still had to pull my battery...

Ummm, I wouldn't make that kind of suggestion to the people around here haha. The battery is NOT meant to be removed. Can it be? Yes. Should it be? No. Especially not for a reset. You risk damaging some things or wearing down the spring antennae connectors if you are constantly opening it up just to unhitch the battery. I think it is glued in anyways.
Holding the power button on my GS2 always restarts it even if it is stuck in a bootloop. I assume this phone will work the same way.

Many devices with the non removable battery use this - holding both volume up and down buttons and the power button - for performing a hard reset.

Can someone actually reply here who HAS a Nexus 4 and has actually tried whatever combination it may be to reset... rather than people coming and saying how it is on HTC or Samsung or whatever the hell... noone cares about those... the question is how to do it on the N4 and ONLY the N4 along for what IS the correct method, rather than what they THINK it is...

Does anyone else's Nexus 4 have a power button that feels "mushy" and doesn't have a pronounced "click" like the volume buttons? It might be the S-Line case that's amplifying the issue but even with the case off, the power button doesn't feel the same as the volume ones. The click is there but it's just not very strong and it feels like something that could be pushed in and stuck there someday...
Use showp1984's Bricked Kernel in the Original Android Development forum. It has a feature called Sweep2Wake where you do not need to use the power button to wake, the phone.
It's truly amazing. Try it out. Make sure you flash the Stock kernel in the thread through fast boot before flashing it or your ROM most likely will not boot

To be honest, compared to the buttons on the iPhone, every android phone I have ever used feel lousy. They are hard to feel for, frequently obstructed, and are not positive by any stretch of the imagination. While this one is better than my Nexus One, I doubt they could have made a worse one than that if they tried.
For a button that will be pressed hundreds, if not thousands of times, it is a fail.
I'm annoyed because of the position, it should be lower IMO.

Well I use the volume buttons to unlock, so functionally it doesn't really affect me but just like to know if this is a standard or defect.
I like the fact its harder to press so I don't accidentally press it. I've found on other phones I press it while watching videos and have to unlock/enter pin/press play multiple times because the button is too sensitive.
My power button is a bit harder to press, not mushy though.. The vol+/- have a crisper button mechanism... It does spring back quickly though, I don't think it'll break.

After using my Galaxy Nexus for a while, it actually took me a bit to get used to the higher location on the 4. I thought I was crazy.

Yeah that's what I mean. It still has the "click", though not as audible as the volume ones. It just feels inferior to the volume buttons.

So I got the HTC One today and I have to say the build quality is out of this world. But I have a few gripes about it and I was wondering if anyone had the same opinions. First the feedback from the softkeys is really weak. I barely feel the vibration when I hit the key. This is especially an issue when I have to double tap the home key for the multitasking screen. I'm also getting incredibly irritated with the location of the power key. It literally could not be further for me to reach when I'm using the phone. I came from an S3 where the power button was on the side and feedback from the soft keys is always a good intensity. Maybe I'm being too critical but I'm wondering if anyone else is getting bothered by these issues.

I too am not the biggest fan of the power button being at the top. I have my screens set up to be used one handed, but the power button ruins it
I switched to Revolution HD ROM, which has a feature to use the volume up/down keys to wake the phone up, but I am slightly concerned about performance. I might be wrong, but I think the stock ROM was smoother (especially when opening and closing the apps draw). I will compare it with a friend's phone today.

OK, had a look at the stock rom and the same lag is there. Will stick with Revolution HD Rom.
Either they fix this or I don't feel them unresponsive. They are working good enough for me.
You can use the HTC logo or the menu buttons to turn screen on and off on alot of the custom kernels. I don't even use my power button any more

I got used to the layout in under an hour when I first got the phone. Now I have no problems using either my sensation or my h1. People always find stuff to.complain. The button and power button layout is the least of worries tbfh.

I'm loving that the development community unlocked the HTC symbol. I use Logo2Wake and Logo2Sleep and use it as a power button. Faux kernel seems to have the most responsive that I have seem so far

I might be in the minority but I think the power button is designed just right. I have no trouble pressing it with my other hand of course. But yeah, the useless HTC logo at the bottom is a big faux pas.

The power button is at the top so that the you can point the phone straight forward when using the IR blaster. Not sure why everyone is overlooking this. As for the buttons, I don't see a problem with them. The lack of a menu key annoyed me but I re-enabled the long press back for menu and it's been fine.
We could have one more button yes. But there are phones with power button on the left so that's not a "mistake"

I was about to say the same thing...it would have been great to have the power button on the side about two-thirds up (Samsung Galaxy style) and the IR blaster on the top. It would have also been cool if they had put a second wide-angle IR blaster on the back of the phone (for example somewhere near the camera lens). The gyroscope could determine which IR port would be active...when the phone is horizontal, it would use the IR port on top, and when the phone is upright and in the normal viewing position it would switch to the IR port on the back. This would permit you to hold your phone in a normal manner and push the remote app buttons without having to swing your phone horizontally and point it at your equipment like a traditional remote control, which is kind of silly when you think about it.

Exactly. Everyone needs to stop complaining about where the power button is, pick up ya damn phone and turn it on and then everything you need is well within reach.
For me personally I don't care I like the button where it is, I usually leave my phone on a flat surface and when I pick it up or turn it on my index finger is already in the general area. NBD.

I prefer the power button at the top. Having previously owned the S2, Note, S3, Note 2, I am glad the power button is not opposite the volume buttons!!
