[Q] Droid 2 World Edition/Milestone 2 Quick Quesiton - Droid 2 General

Hi all,
I have my Milestone 2 on pre-order and have a very basic quesiton. I have never owned an Android device before but am very much into using Linux etc and am quite keen to get stock Android running on my Milestone 2 when I finally get it.
My question is, will the ROMs that introduce stock Android onto the Droid 2 work without much trouble on the World Edition of the phone, or do you guys envisage a fair bit of work to get it rolling?
Apologies if this has been covered before or is in the wrong section of these forums.
Regards,
- Matt

Just so you know, Droid 2 Global (World Edition) is not the same phone as the Milestone 2.
Droid 2 Global has CDMA, GSM, UMTS while Milestone 2 is a different phone and has GSM and UMTS but no CDMA.
Verizon says the Droid 2 Global is Tri-Band UMTS, but I can't find any documentation on what bands exactly.
Droid Pro has Tri-Band UMTS, too, and according to some documentation it is 850/1900/2100 but that is not official.

Why is this happening with milestone?

Hello all,
i like XDA Forums for its master brains and respect it for all the support.
i used windows mobile and android on different HTC devices and enjoyed all the interesting things in it with the help of XDA.
now i wanted to try motorola milestone and got it and it was a sheer disappointment.
Motorola milestone users are ignored very badly by motorola without updating the buggy phone and not even caring to reply users queries. its even deleting all the users posts in developer forums. it locked down the bootloader with digital signatures when the same device in US "Droid" has got all the cakes with open bootloader and custom roms and device updates for issues. recently it has announced 2.1 for droid where milestone still didn't even get 2.0.1
i see ano place to report this and motorola wantedly deleting all such posts in their support forums. as this is common android section, thought i can post it here and see if any master brains can help us.
check here where a continent itself is complaining against motorola and there is no single reply or action for this
Thanks for understanding
its bound to happen really, the Droid is Motorola's gem now and it will be the one shown off and given what it needs ahead of other devices.
Same with HTC and there devices, there flagship one's get the bug fixes and new updates while lesser models dont.
I'm sure the Milestone will eventually get what it needs.
What do you mean by locked down boot loader?
as far as i understand the bootloader in milestone is little different than in droid. the milestone bootloader uses digital signatures everywhere to check for the software authentication which makes it impossible to put custom ROMs as we do with all other android phones.
even motorola is very slow in updating the issues with milestone. i don't understand why they are doing this but its like completely locked down and totally ignored fir the price everyone payed.
hello admins / moderators / master brains / everyone,
is it possible to check the Motorola milestone bootloader for bypassing the digital signature check so that we can install custom roms on it as its done on Droid.
please take this as a kind request as i lost hope on motorola releasing the open bootloader on milestone and they r very slow in releasing updates for this device and also ignorant in resolving most bugs.
i see that you are supporting non HTC devices like samsung, toshiba and Acer. so a little hope that its posible to look into this
please everyone
i am not a big techie to understand internals of the possibilities but you can see how many people want this on here http://www.facebook.com/motorolaeurope
Thanks to all for reading this
Motorola Milestone and Droid feature the same Hardware (while Droid is CDMA and Milestone GSM) but they did not get the same software build.
Droid = with Google (Maps Navigation etc.)
Milestone = Motorola Android (Multitouch, Motonav etc.)
Thanks to TI, M-Shield is available on both devices. With M-Shield it is possible to control booting and flashing.
While the Droid does accept every signature, the Milestone is locked to (probably) one.
So there we are.
Kernel without signature will not boot (blocked by Bootloader).
Flashing another modified Bootloader is not possible without signature.

all this has already been figured out. what they want to know now is how to un-fudge it so that they have the same abilities as dream and other android users. I have been reading EVERYTHING i can find on the matter, as i REALLY want a milestone. id just get a droid, but i HATE verizon and am staying on t-mobile no matter what phone i hafta use. so im stuck on g1 till the milestone gets figured out. what i have been thinking is that the signature is a key, so there must be a keyhole, right? if we could find and disassemble the "keyhole", could we not then reverse engineer a key?
All this locked/unlocked nonsense is making me want a milestone even more, just so i can help figure this out and give motorola a big "F-U" for what they are doing. because thats basically what they've done, they've told all their customers to go F*&$ themselves. well, just the ones outside of the US.
Honestly i dont see how motorola made it this far with a slogan like, "Go F*&$ Yourself", but whatever. thats why i HATE verizon, because they dont give two ****s about their customers, as long as they get paid. and thats what motorola is doing here...they dont CARE what milestone users want, as long as they keep selling milestones, and controlling EVERY ASPECT of them.
doesnt sound like an OPEN SOURCE attitude, to me...

Milestone 2.0.1 had been released before you wrote that post actually (it was released on feb 4th).
if you didn't get the update OTA yet you can even get it through their website
I assume you're in Germany so try here hxxp://direct.motorola.com/GER/SoftwareUpdateSummary.asp?country=DEU&language=GER&web_page_name=SUPPORT&strCarrierId=&strPhone=MILESTONE

now the hope is gone and i decided to sell my device. its such a dumb company which doesn't care about end users.
HTC is far better in these things without putting hard restrictions.
You must have missed the hooplah that surounded the era of phones HTC put out around the Tilt. Crap video drivers etc....
HTC is just like Motorola. They go where the money is, although I say Motorola went a little overboard with the signed bootloader, it still runs rings around the Hero and most other aandroid devices short of Desire/ Nexus One.....

[Q] MIUI

Hey ive been seeing this MIUI floating around and just seeing if there one for the droid 2? if not can some body get this thing rolling??
Even I had a clue on how to go about this I'd give it a go, but I'm too new to Android to have a clue on how to port roms.
droid 2 roms
I would love to see the zen miui rom for the droid 2. Also, I see a lot of themes for the droid 2 but not many in fact hardly any custom roms. I am spoiled though because I am coming from a droid 1. Verizon replaced my defective Droid 1 with a Droid 2 but I think my Droid 1 was better because of the unlocked bootloader and all the custom roms. I have rom manager and it only has 2 listed and they don't wok. Any help would be appreciated. thanks. Mike

the phones only been out a few months, and there are several custom roms....and people still working on bootloader.
Personally running epic 2.7 atm, but there's also all the motoboy star wars stuff & green rom, and there will be lots more in the months to come. Have to realize the d1 has been out for a long time, so of course there's going to be a lot more custom stuff out.
Glad to hear they are still working on the bootloader. It would be nice if they can unlock it.

Because Droid 2 is a CDMA-phone (Verizon) and Milestone 2 is a GSM-phone (Europe e.g.)! Both are based on different chipsets. That's why this phones are technically not the same phones, they just look alike!
The Droid 2 Global is both: CDMA and GSM! So there are 3 different phones with the same look out in the wild.
Oh, I see. Well it's look bad, no ROM avaible now, only ROM Fission test. I am wondering to buy something different
Do you think some ROMS will come?
And themes for Droid2 can be used for Milestone2?
I tried to deodexed my milestone 2 rom yesterday, the process is not hard but a bit boring. I have different goal than theming, but it appears easy when everything is deodexed.
The Blur phone framework seems quite different from AOSP, so building AOSP ROM like Fission requires much more time than theming... If you want big changes to MS2, you got to be either very patient or well skilled in hacking
So i can't flash on Fission ROM (for M2) this THEME: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914196
try metamorph: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329
not sure if they had that steel theme u want but they had a nice black one so it made me happy..
OK, no DesireZ, I will buy Milestone 2. I heard only positive comments for Fission ROM and I hope, new ROMS will arrived before I will buy the phone (next several months).
Only what I am scared is locked bootloader, I am affraid of brock

If i would be you id buy the Desire HD way bigger display and no bootlock... i wish i bought it.. i cant get rid of my ms2

What's bad and what i shouldn't do with locked bootloader? I want only flash ROM and THEME, no more customizion
And that wont work.

Much like with the other Motorola phones, you CAN flash ROMs...you just can't change the kernel of the OS. Some functions not in the original kernel can be added by loading them as modules, but not all kernel features can be loaded that way.
If I had to guess, I'd say we'll get a few ROMs eventually, but given that much of the development scene goes on in the USA, we mightn't get as many as other phones...at least unless AT&T manage to get a version of the phone for their network. Unlikely though...Verizon seem to be going hard and exclusive on most of the Motorola gear...then again, Verizon are getting the iPhone after years on AT&T exclusive, so who knows what will happen in future...
To sum up...ROMs are coming, but don't expect the scene to be as vibrant for the GSM variants as it is with the CDMA ones...
if I had only known that before I bought a phone. Hmm, maybe it's time to play around myself a little bit =)
it's really disappointing that there isn't as much "hackery" going on in the Milestone 2 area compared to the Milestone 1.
Doshaska for example works so hard for getting the newest CyanogenMods on the Milestone 1, other groups released the 2.2 Froyo Upgrade months before Motorola did it (2 days ago they finally released it, but still not for everyone).
I think one of the problems is that the MS2 wasn't nearly as successful as the MS1 - but if we're lucky some skilled hacker will go on to our phone. Still hoping...
I think there will be better in the future - I bought this phone yesterday, with the hope for that . For now we've got the Argen2Stone. And look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870845&page=28 - Mikevhl would like to port the CM6 for us We must wait and help if possible

Time to move Droid 2/global/milestone 2 to legacy?

I think it's time to move Droid 2 / Global / Milestone 2 forums to Legacy as there is little to no support for these devices. Mostly everybody seems to have moved to the Galaxy 3 or One X :crying:
The only things that could possibly save this device is if Motorola add it to the list of devices support by their recently released unlock tool.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
The bootloaders are a pain, but the biggest problem is that we don't have ICS drivers for the camera and such which means devs are having to work that out on their own. Considering that in the last year we've gotten Galnet, CM9 with 10 on the horizon, MIUI V4, Gummy, and other Roms I wouldn't say these are dead devices.
motos bootloader unlocking tool is not compatible with older phone
requires fastboot mode
to unlock, moto would have to create a new sbf

Milestone 2 forums have been moved to low activity/legacy devices for above 6 months you know, despite them being quite more active than the D2/D2Global ones, and with CM9/10 releases pretty much more advanced than the D2 ones.
But yeah, D2/D2G should be moved there too, and should have been at the same time than Milestone 2 ones.

[Q] Planning on buying this phone

Hi all,
I am planning on buying this phone over an Xperia ZR, number one reason being software updates and development support (and because it's cheaper)
I have a few questions and if you can point me to the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
But first, please see below of what you can expect from me:
I am knowledgable in flashing ROMS, rooting, etc.
I like to read stuff, but this is the first time I've asked a question that I can read up on. Why? I'm gonna be very, very, VERY busy in my work schedule (I know, holiday season, then this) and I kinda like to be prepared first before going through flashing ROMS, etc. (Especially when I am groggy with said work schedule) I might not have time to read through dozens of threads (forums is saturated) and 20+ pages (or 200+ for that matter)
Now, on to my questions:
What is this about radios? I've had a Samsung Galaxy S2 and I've spent hours trying to get a proper modem/radio to work on my SIM (NTT Docomo, I unlocked it, sim didn't work, long story). In the end I can text and make calls but don't have 3g. Is the radios here the same?
I've skimmed the General Discussion and I saw a thread about LTE (hence my questions about radio) Can anyone tell me if it will work on my local provider? From my provider's website
Smart fired up LTE in the 2100MHz band officially making it the first multi-frequency service provider of mobile LTE in the country (Philippines) and one of the first in the world.

If I do a nandroid backup, then mess up my radio, I'm covered right?
Additional questions may pop up as answers arrive.
Thank you very much XDA community!:victory:

I've never had any trouble with the radios here on the Nexus 4. You have an OPTION to enable Band 4 LTE via some software mods but it's not necessary. Read up about this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358931
Also here is a master list of radios.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
You'll find everything to be very easy to set up via TWRP and the community is pretty helpful as well.

Samsung have many radios for their devices because of the many carriers. Google Nexus 4 is carrier neutral and there is only one radio version which usually gets updated with the next android version. This is the least problematic device you could get in terms of radios, unlocking boot loaders, flashing stuff and Roms and support. You are not going to experience any issues with the things you intend to do with it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Nandroid backups do not backup the radio. There really is no need for it.

I hated the S2 with all those modems. So confusing. Luckily, you don't have to deal with that on the Nexus 4. Any modem will work on the Nexus 4 as long as it's up to date with the OS. A hybrid modem with a combination of a older modem and new modem works flawlessly.

Ah thank you all for the clarification, my Nexus 4 is two days old and already updated to 4.4.2 stock. Thank you very much XDA community!
