Switching from 3g to 2g...question for devs - Droid X General

Hey guys,
I work in an area where my 3g signal is really weak and cuts in and out. This really effects my battery quite a bit. However I have been using that # *#* number to get into the phone settings and change the setting to cdma only which seems to put my phone in 2g mode (is that true?)..and thn back to automatic to get 3g back. My question is is it possible for some of you to develop an app or a widget which could do this with a single click?
Thank you

Couldnt you do that with power widget plus? I do something similar since I'll in a bad area as well except I use it to reset my data connection so to speak.

Well I have extended controls installed all I can do with that is turn off data completely..from what I gather none of the power widgets support cdma devices when switching between 2 and 3 g

You don't want to go 1x. The data rate is pitiful at 153 Kbps max.

I just use Bettercut and make a data manager shortcut and just turn off manually the internet saves more battery than 1x connection

There is an app on the market, called Network which takes you to that menu with the push of a button. No need to enter in all those #*#*#*##* digits

Another way is to use AnyCut to set a shortcut to the field test menu where all of those settings are available.

Thanks

What is the full name of the app? There are multiple apps named "network"

App to monitor data usage ?

Similar to SPB Wireless on WM.
Any help really appreciated.
3G Watchdog.
I got a widget off the market called data counter, simple front end that sits on my home screen with lots of stats and options in the background, works good for me

NetCounter is also a good one, free on the market.

I use NetTraffic.

It seems some users said it does not work on HTC Desire.

Doesn't work for Wifi on mine, and the cell counter is WELL out as well. I've been downloading quite a bit via 3G over the last week, and it reckons I've only downloaded 1.24MB...
+1 for 3G watchdog - does what it says on the tin. Very pleased with it...
I just tried the "3G Watchdog", but I cannot see any option to "disable" it.
Once I activated by setting it, I saw the icon ets ... but I cannot de-activate / disable / turn it OFF.

Only way I know of to do it is to close it under running services and then open the app again next time you are going to use mobile data.
I just keep it on as I keep my phone on mobile data unless I need to browse the web at home as the wifi is crap for notifications, they hardly seem to work when the screens locked on wifi.
3G watchdog is great!

What's using my gps?

I just did a factory reset...mainly because I'm over the original excitement and wanted to get rid of any apps I don't really need...
Now when I turn on my gps it keeps showing in my notification bar that it's searching....I'm using the system app and I don't see any apps active that would be using it...it's really bothering me and I was just wondering why it might be searching??

I kind of noticed that also. I figured somehow if we kill all running app and I would receive a txt message some how att navigator would open itself. If my gps was on it would start searching.... Maybe you have the same o problem?

I noticed that as well, and I have no idea what was using it.
Did you turn "use wireless networks" back on in your location settings? I've found that if I don't, the GPS will keep trying to get a lock for any program that uses your location (weather widgets, etc) and won't be able to. So it will keep running and drain the battery really fast.

Data Toggle widget ?

Any widget to toggle the mobile data on and off ?
If you search data toggle in the market there quite a few widgets that will do this for you. Dcswitch gets some decent reviews and has a free version. I used to use data toggle widget but occasionally had some odd results.

The problem with others is that they don't work with CDMA.
EDIT: NM it didn't work

4G Tweak - Stop the hop/drop from H to E

No 4G in your area? This may get you on 4G!
Hop from H to E? This will lock on HSDPA and stop hopping to Edge
Why? Your phone automatically drops to Edge if HSDPA signal is to low to Android Standards. You can actually use HSDPA with a much weaker signal then they recommend. This tweak locks on HSDPA and prevents drop to Edge
Warning: If you get no reception, switch back to 'WCDMA Preferred'
Step 1: Open Dialer App, Enter *#*#4636#*#* (A menu will appear)
Step 2: Select Phone information
Step 3: Change Set preferred network type: to WCDMA only
You can also download Anycut app and select to make a shortcut instead of having to dial that all the time
...or download the app "Network" from the App Market
Old news is old. This still wont help if you get 2 bars or less of 3g.

Exactly what I did...however I can NEVER find it because it's such a generic name and gets totally buried in market garbage. I always have to rely on the fact it's in my Titanium backup. I had to send my friend the APK off mine cause we could not for the life of us find it in the market again.
I found search for wcdma and network

Omg this is great! Thank you for this!
Thanks! I'll try to give the "network" app a try now.
Thank you for the info!
Hmmm interesting will give it a go [email protected] bradley thanks for the app name, all works fine with New Z Radio.

Apps to control data

Hi. I just started using mobile internet but my telco only give me 250MB per month. What apps do you recommend that can control the data usage? For starters I've been using android firewall to block some apps from using my data. But I would like to know more apps. And how do I block the system update OTA from using my data to check for updates?
Why not just turn off the data radio until you actually need it?

Try This.

Just use Greenify. Best app and has really good response. If you try this you'll never go back. It hibernates lots of apps and stops them from draining batt/data in the background remember to disable notifications in the background for all internet-related apps.
Greenify also works for ALL apps. Just add it to the grenify list.
It's the only app you're gonna need and is gonna solve your problem.
Also in settings, set the Data usage limit so you don't exceed it. Good luck

I find that the built-in data usage monitor under Settings - Data Usage works really well.
