[Tutorial] How to maximize the value of your cell phone plan with a nexus one - Nexus One General

OK, I haven't posted in a while so here's a fairly basic tutorial for everyone and hopefully this thread can atleast spark some valuable ideas for everyone.
So we all have nexus ones here, and based on the unique sales strategy of the nexus, I would guess almost all of us have extra phones just laying around lol (I, for example, have a G1 that was basically just a paperweight).
What I did was sign up for an extra line with no contract (t-mobile), no data, no texts, and the minimum amount of minutes possible. This cost me an extra petty $30/month, obviously only a dollar a day which is nothing..
Advantages of this:
You now will be walking around with two phones like a boss lol.. Imagine walking into a restaurant/bar and when you empty your pockets and go to set down your phone, it's actually both phones. In my case, I actually use the other line as a business line, just call up your carrier and ask them to change the caller i.d. name to your business name. Your extra phone is basically a fully functional phone, just because you also have a nexus one. The wifi hotspot on our nexus is critical here. We now have internet, emails, and text (with gtalk? I'm not sure because I only text on my main line). You don't have to ever worry about a wifi because you will always have your main phone, the nexus, in your other pocket.
Disadvantages of this:
Nothing, besides paying an extra dollar a day lol

Huh I don't understand why do I need a second line?

I see what you're saying here but you gotta weigh out the variables

you can also use google voice and save those 30bucks.
or
you can upgrade your plan with those 30 bucks.

I don't get it...

I guess he doesn't realize that the Nexus One can be used to talk on. I too am guilty here to a degree, I have talked on mine perhaps 2 hours since I got it.
Otherwise, pass the crackpipe dude.

This tutorial actually made for this two guys:

I started this thread to spark new ideas for other nexus owners across the country

Actually your plan would only cost me more money- perhaps I am missing the BIG picture.

i like my plan better... 1000min + unlimited txt for $49 + tzones for $4.99 = $55 for 1000min,, unlimited txt, unlimited 3G data... been usingin it for 2 yrs no with no contract

I guess I don't understand why someone would shell out an additional $30 a month to carry around two phones? The Nexus already makes calls and has data, why do you need another phone to do the same thing? To look like a boss? Instead of sharing internet to the second phone, why not just browse on your Nexus? What's the point of this thread? So many questions...

How high do I need to be to understand this thread?

I understand what he's saying, get a second voice line, and be a cheapskate about the data. but if you want to look like a true boss, you lay two iPhone 4's on the table. and you pay $100/month for each. not a N1 and G1. geez!
And I bet nobody calls you on your business phone. Just saying.

The g1 was just an example because I had an extra one that was just sitting around.. Paying an extra measly one dollar a day is worth it to me to go from one fully functional phone to two, even if I hardly use the other one lol.

Paying an extra $360 dollars a year for something you don't need is kinda silly, unless you like to blow money on random things.
Hell, I can think of many things I'd rather put $360 towards.

To everyone who's confused:
The OP is trying to make a joke (which sadly failed horribly).
I guess it's funny to him, which is all that matters, /shrug.

How? Are you a T-Mobile employee?

Anyway: a better alternative that *everyone should do*:
A) Use Google Voice for free texting.
B) Buy a Gizmo5 account for $10 on ebay and set up free VoiP (works on 3G and Wifi), and tie it to your Google Voice number. This gives you unlimited minutes so you can downgrade your plan to the lowest amount.
The entire process takes about 10 minutes to set-up. I did it last week; it's very easy and works extremely well.

Yea this is what i have setup. I pay $25 a month each for 4 N1s on a family 1500 min even more plus plan (no contract) and $10 web2go data, blocked texting (use only google voice). If you just need a single line you can get a 500 minute plan for $29.99 and add the $10 web2go unlimited web for a total of $39.99 a month and no contract. All you have to do is change APN settings. This plan will expire before november 3, so those interested should jump on it today

cheaper Nexus One?

So i called tmobile to get the unlock code for the mytouch 3g, as i'm getting my nexus one on monday. I just started asking questions about it and the rep told me somthing interesting. He said the cheapest way to go for the nexus one is to order it through tmobile on a brand new line. Then he said when u get your phone call them and they will just add it to your existing plan(mine being a family plan). Then i would just be paying for a 3rd line for a few months(which is like 10 bucks more a month or somthing like that) and then can just cancel that line. yes you are paying for an unsused line but its a whole lot cheaper than buying the phone for $529. Any thoughts? has anyone done this?
Even if u kept a 3rd line on your account for 2 years thats only 120 more.thats 299 for the phone. still cheaper than 529.

im pretty sure that if you just wait til the 14 days are up and cancel, pay the ETF for that line it would work.

I read earlier that if u did that they would still make u pay full for the phone. or am i wrong here?
actually you are right. you probably do have to let it ride for a few months.
I thought you werent allowd to get it for $179 and add the line to an existing plan. Dont you need to have it as a Even More plan. I guess I dont quite understand how you would get around it?
after reading that line on my contract it says:
"for contracts of one year or more, I may cancel my service without paying a termination fee if I return all phones I acquired with my activation within 14 days from my activation"
hmm not sure but it seems that if you pay ETF you get to keep your phone, correct?
well its just what the tmobile guy told me that he tells everyone. He said u keep the plan until the phone comes in the mail. Then you call them and they can just add the line to your existing plan. As in my case i'm already on a family plan. so i only pay 10 bucks for a 3rd line instead of the 80 bucks of the even more.
Sounds like there might be an opening there to save some money. I guess this is why Verizon raised their ETF to 350 on smartphones (though is being questioned by FCC).

Highly doubt that works.
You can't merge accounts like that...
And I bet they'll make you keep the $80 plan no matter what, not $10 / month
talked to a tmobile rep and this definitely does not work, nice try though btw you forgot to mention the 35$ activation fee.
It may theoretically work if you give up not the line you've just purchased, but the older one that you had in your family for years. So you may need a line you had for years and it should be available for immediate termination (i.e. the previous 2 years contract has expired).
Keep us informed.
Data is required for all of the 2 years, you CAN'T have it removed.
The ABSOLUTE cheapest option ever is getting the phone unlocked + Even More Plus at $59.99, then remove the unlimited texting for a total of $49.99 / month, and no contract whatsoever. (Use Google Voice for free unlimited texting.)
$49.99 month vs the subsidized (and forced) phone plan of $79.99 a month is $30 per month saved. $30 * 24 months = $720 saved, MUCH more than the cost of the phone itself.
I had no idea you could cancel the text messaging part of the plan... good to know. Any idea how much it then costs should I accidentally send or receive an SMS?

If you really wanted to play it safe and use only Google Voice without the slightest possibility of ever getting charged for a text, T-Mobile actually offers a very easy to activate text messaging block. Just log into the website -> Manage -> Plans and Services -> Add Services:

Anyway, here's the standard messaging rates:
Domestic rates for text, picture, video, and instant messaging
$0.20 per message sent or received. This applies to messages you send to or receive from domestic numbers while you are in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico. This rate also applies to international messages sent or received while you are in the U.S and Puerto Rico. If you have a T-Mobile messaging bundle or a plan that includes messaging, messages received from international numbers are deducted from the allotted number of messages included in your bundle or plan.
The cheapest plan is $54.99, not $49.99.

How much does your data plan cost?

Not sure if this has been discussed before but I tried searching and nothing came up or maybe I used the wrong terms to search.
I was looking at my friends additional services on his phone in the My accounts app and saw that he had this plan called "Preferred Android Unlimited Web" for $20.00. I was curious as to how he got it and he told me they gave it to him for being a loyal customer of more than 12 months.
I been a customer for around 3 years or more and my unlimited data plan is at $29.99 so I called up 611 and asked what the deal was and I first talked to a woman and told her the situation and she said she couldn't see it. My only other option was to switch to the limited 200/mb per month plan. Then I ask to speak to a supervisor and was transferred over to a different department and talked to another woman. She looked up my records and confirmed that I was indeed a loyal customer and after explaining how I saw the preferred android unlimited web plan, she changed my plan to that without any hesitation.
The G2 is my first smart phone and I am wondering how come I wasn't informed of this data plan when I first signed up. Are any of you currently on this preferred android plan? If not, maybe you should look into it and save yourself 10 bucks a month. Just a heads up. I'm extremely pleased that my bill will be 10 bucks cheaper per month and that it took no trouble to change the service.
I'm getting the $20 a month for my data lines on my account..we had 3 but went to 2...my wife's BB is a $20 a month as well. I was told you had to have 2 or more data lines on your account to get the discounted rate. Granted I've been a customer for 10 years so they may have been doing it for me due to being a customer for so long too lol
The loyalty plan isn't something they offer you out of the blue, you usually have to get retentions to add it for you.
They can also give you myfavs for free, and unlimited family text messaging for $9.99
I pay $30 for my unlimited data plan...How many years you have to be with T-Mobile to be considered loyal?? I have been with them for 2 years now.

That should be more than enough. Just call up 611 and ask them to change you to the preferred android plan. If the rep says it doesn't show up for you, ask to be transferred to a supervisor or the retentions department.
I pay only 20 a month for data and Im bearly on my 3rd month and this is my first account with tmobile which I opened specifically for the G2. Wow I din't know some people payed 30

yes the the preferred data plans work on family plans, I have it on all 4 of my lines (2 preferred mytouch, 2 preferred android)
They usually don't have a problem giving that plan out to anyone. They only ***** about the $9.99 unlimited family messaging and the free myfavs. Just call in and get to retentions to have them added. A regular csr wont have access to add those options.
I have the family time 700 plan for 59.99
my data plan says "T-mobile Android unlimited web + 400 messages"
for 24.99.
I will definately be calling them up....tomorrow...after my bill is paid

$10.."unlimited web for phones" on T-Mobile. I had it added onto my plan before I switched to my G2. They just recently updated their data plans so it no longer exists.
I recently renewed my contract and the loyalty department put me on a cheaper plan they no longer offer that includes $20/month data and my faves. I saw the promotion for adding an extra line for $5/month on their website and now can not take advantage of it without switching to one of their current plans They tell me it will cost me $10/month instead with no way around it.
When I got my G2s, the CSR at retentions told me that due to my tenure (4 years but I'm kinda spotty on making payments sometimes lol) that the best I could get was the $24.99 android data plan (and thus, I have that x2).
OTOH, they put me on the $49.99 family 500 plan to make up for it.
I think after I pay my bill I'm going to call them and ask about myfaves
If I remember correctly, you must have been a customer for 18 months with no late payments on an auto-bill account to be automatically granted loyalty status. The other way to get it apparently is to whine to retention department.

That makes sense. I was never late on my bill so I guess that's why they changed my data plan without any questions.
I just wished I knew about this preferred android plan when I got my G2.
lol, I can assure you that no whining, begging, or acting like a "I've been a customer for 4 years!! I demand the best deals!" happened.
I have no complaints My family (overall) has been with T-Mobile since 2001 (my account however has only existed 4 years), so that may.. help slightly (although I doubt it).
Sometimes, it just helps to be really nice (and get lucky!)
$25 for T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web with FlexPay. I ditched Sprint to get a Nexus One in January.
I've got a question though. Are any of you able to view how much data you've used on the T-Mobile website? Mine is always blank. Does that mean my data usage isn't being tracked?

Good bye Verizon!

Since the WiFi only XOOM has been officially announced, I just requested my return label from AmazonWireless. I would just like to thank Motorola for doing the smart thing and releasing the WiFi only version in a timely manner. I never had service with Verizon and didn't plane to since I have a Perfect condition Nexus One with unlimited AT&T data. It's a shame that Verizon forced Motorola into that ridiculous price point for a new/unproven product. Don't get me wrong I love my XOOM and thought the $799 price was some what justified, but now that the WiFi only version is about to be available for $599.99 I don't think the Verizon XOOM will sell very well. Also I completely understand that some users want/need built in 3G/4G and more power to you, but I would definitely tell you to consider a WiFi XOOM with a MiFi or a Smart phone with wifi tethering if your trying to save some bucks. Well I guess my little diary entry is over.
P.S. I think it's funny how over the past 2-3 weeks all the post where like "I'm returning this POS XOOM it cost to much and I didn't want data and when I want to look a 5 HD porn streams it freezes and I can't play my MKV movies on it but my iPad plays them in 1080p just fine sarcasm and it doesn't have flash and I need the Micro SD card to work now!" - To these people I say "F*CK OFF!"

First of all, let me say that it's more difficult for me to agree with you since I got $100 price matched off my purchase and used $465 in gift cards to begin with when I bought mine. That said, I have to ask you if it's really worth a couple hundred bucks to lose out on the ability to pull up 3g/4g down the road if the need arose? I have been in 3 specific situations to date that had me out in the boonies and when the AT&T network was in the can the Verizon network saved my bacon. I live and work in the greater Houston area and there are a few places where service is spotty.
I think Verizon will ultimately remove their head from their rear end and kill activation fees alltogether, and being able to sign up for 3g in a pinch and then use it for a few days and turn it off effectively costing you at most 30 bucks would be something I think I would greatly regret.
Just my opinion
Oh I have to mention that I too own a Google Nexus one on the AT&T network, and quite often I am a walking hotspot

If I thought we could rely on Verizon to do this, I'd keep my 3G/4G version as well. We can't today, however, and we have no idea if they will, and so I'm returning my 3G and getting a wifi-only as well. I'll use the $200 (or $250 if the Sam's Club rumor holds true) to pay for 3G/4G as I need it--on-demand--via my Sprint Epic hotspot.
FYI, no, I'm not into rooting, and so I'm not going to go that route to get tethering for free. I'd love to see someone like PDAnet, though, make a solution that will work with the Xoom.

I went to Best Buy during the sweet period of time that a promotional coupon worked online, and talked a floor manager into allowing the price match after showing him the checkout process up to the point of entering the coupon. It was iffy, but in the end he did it. To me, that was the right move because I try to show loyalty even to big box stores in my area. My brother works for Best Buy in another location so I feel good about buying there for that reason too.
In response to the OP, that's really a good enough solution for you then I guess... the nexus one does wifi hotspot without any root required btw.
I for one got nailed with the 35 dollar activation and once again with a little sugar and honey (and persistance) was able to get that credited off my 1st bill.
3G is a must for me. Even if im paying $600 for a mobile device...damn well better have internet/email access when im not on wifi.
Now, some will say they will just tether to there unlimited Android phone. But come on...that gets old, kills your battery, drops in and out, kinda slow..etc. So no thanks.

the up front cost is minuscule when compared to $20 a month for only 1gb of data.... but yes I agree the 3G shouldn't be an up-front premium of $200 just to enable the connection.

But if you're as connected as I'm gonna assume most folks around here are, that's the perfect plan for the few times you don't have WiFi; I've got 10 days left on my month and have used about 300MB.
Yea I'm picking up the xoom wifi on day one here. I already have a sprint 4g overdrive mifi so with unlimited data and aan att nexus one too so in certainly nit gonna pay verizon for data on top of that. I currently have a sprint galaxy tab and I just use the mifi to get data on it when I'm not on home or work wireless.

Sure. Different people have different usage. But if I'm using 2gb+ per month on my phone, there's no way I can stay under 1gb on my tablet.

Interesting. I (used to) use my EVO for everything (web, calendar, E-mail on two accounts, updates, etc.), and I checked my usage with Sprint before signing onto a VZ data plan to see about what I was using for that, and most I'd ever run up was ~450MB.

Wow. I don't understand how you use that little data lol. I easily use 2gb-3gb a month.
This is my data usage for my Nexus One on AT&T. I didn't even have a smartphone for like the first 5 months on the chart. Even the 4GB month I had a Samsung Impression with unlimited internet for $10 a month.

Ah! That is more like it. Hesse just did the whole "not believing in data caps" promo. Also the only reason I am still on Sprint.
Do you BONSAI?
If this is TRUE. I will jump ship. Everyone I know is with Verizon and their network here is much larger, than Sprint. I stayed with them because of the unlimited Data Plans. I use data for work, CC, Navigation, Pandora, Weather, etc. You get the picture.

If it applies to smartphone users, and you seriously use more than 10gb/mo:
A) Verizon has no plan for you.
B) you are less than 1/10 of 1% of Sprint's data consumers and they will NOT miss you.
What will be the prices and limits for Verizon's tiered plan.
Was bound to happen....all the users on bragging about their data usage and wifi tethering

The thread should be closed after this. The rest is just irrelevant.
From what I'm reading, this will be a really good thing, as it will give us the option to perhaps switch to cheaper plans. I would not touch anything near 10GB, and 5GB would be perfect for me....
It seems like no one is reading the article including the original poster. This only applies for non-smartphone devices. This thread title should be revised or this thread should be closed.
Where did you see that? I saw no mention of this being for non smartphone users

No where did I read its only for dumb phones!!
Sprint better tread carefully,Dont want to piss pf consumers with more charges.
As they become more like Verizon, what would be the reason to stay with them?
As stated its for non smartphone customers but how long before they touch us in the wallet too.

Ah, but will this take me out of Premiere status if I drop below $90? Save a few bucks here or get a new phone every year...decisions, decisions.
And here are the other "rumor" articles that state it's for data cards only:

When I think of Sprint, the first thought that comes to mind is CEO Dan Hesse standing on a pier talking about being truly unlimited. I’m sure that he really does like the idea of being truly unlimited… but only when phones are concerned. You see, Sprint is reportedly going to take a different stance when it comes to data connection cards and embedded devices, such as tablets and netbooks.

Tiered plans not so bad
My current phone data plan costs $80 a month for unlimited, and I only use a couple hundred megs a month at most. If I could drop that by almost $50 as a result of my being a light user, I'd love it.
I forgot where I saw an article about it, maybe it was for AT&T/iPhone, but the notion of variable rate based on your use seems like a good idea to me. Start out at a base (that $35/mo for 3gb isn't too bad) that notches up when you cross a line, and becomes more bulk friendly as you go, and every month it resets to the base. If I went really heavy on data usage for a month, my bill would be at that $80 unlimited point, but if I went sparingly I'd only get charged $35 for under 3gb, or maybe $55 for 8gb before hitting the 'unlimited' mark at say 10gb.
My phone is a tool, a convenience to make my life better in some minor form. It does not make me who I am as a person, and it would be nice to have that reflected in my wallet as a result.
Yes this only goes for non-phone devices. Only affects things like tablets, usb modems, etc. The article 2 posts above clarifies and even shows a graph for detail.
Note that the 450 plan will get 300 bonus minutes, so it is essentially 750 minutes, plus unlimited data for your phone.
EDIT: You get 300 bonus minutes if you get a tab, usb modem, etc. and one of the new tiered data plans.
2nd EDIT: It seems it would be cheaper and do it legit and only pay $30/month on Sprint's mobile hotspot for your phone (and get UNLIMITED DATA that way) instead of paying $34.99 for even the 3GB plan, since these new plans for the non-phone devices requires you to sign up for a phone plan anyways.

AT&T Family Shared Data

So I'm sure most of you are aware of this whole AT&T Data Sharing thats coming out near the end of august. I was just doing some math on the whole thing and had it confirmed by a representative on the phone...turns out, it makes no sense. Shocking.
For a family of 5 such as my situation, we have 4 smart phones and 1 non-smartphone.
As the charts shows (which I cant post since Im too new), it breaks down like this...
4GB
$70 base price
$40 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
------------
$54 / smartphone
$44 / normal phone
6GB
$90 base price
$35 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
-----------
$53 / smartphone
$48 / normal phone
10GB
$120 base price
$30 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
-----------
$54 / smartphone
$54 / normal phone
Past that point it actually starts making sense and getting more expensive, but as you can see, why settle for less unless your the guy with a non-smartphone who gets screwed.

Thanks for sharing! Saw these earlier today, still ripoffs but at least ATT doesn't force you on them like VZW.
Prepaid is cheaper.

I'm not trying to gloat here, but this just makes my decision to add the 'unlimited data' package to my service, of which is no longer available for purchase, a notably smart one. Thank goodness for "grandfathered" things, such as is mine. Albeit, knowing AT&T's business practices, they'll probably figure a way to forcibly get me to buy into a data package eventually. But, for now, the thirty dollars is well worth it. However, I have heard rumors of AT&T throttling down bandwidth once users such as myself reach a certain monthly data usage amount.

For sure, I'm jealous of my friends who still rock unlimited data since I got in the smartphone game a little late.
I guess the good part of these shared plans is unlimited calling is included.
But does the shoe fit?
Run the numbers. It's not really made to reduce anybody's bill, but to add flexibility. Everybody on the new plan gets tethering, unlimited domestic minutes and texts. I'm curious to see how employer discounts will be affected. I'm a veteran and get a 15% discount off some parts on my plan. If it works out for me, great. If not, I'll stick with my current setup.

My girl had the unlimited to until she bought a 4g phone. The unlimited is only for 3 g so they made her get the 3 gigabyte plan for a 4g phone they already have taken that out of the picture if you buy a 4 g phone

That can't be right. One of my buddies who has unlimited just upgraded to a One X and he was able to keep it.
Correction: He said that he missed that mandatory switch by two weeks-ish.

Just, sell the phones you get from them and get international ones. They see all of those as, non-smart, and unlim data is still there, for those. 10/mo too as far as I know.

Not even a week into this month. Rogers raider on $10 "non-smartphone" data plan
You don't get the HSPA+ speeds with the Media Net plans correct?
The new Family plans may offer flexibility but I'm pretty sure that the main point is the same as VZs, to make you pay more for data. You either jump up to a high dollar plan or you risk paying the pretty hefty new overage fees.
Man, their highest price tier is still more then the unlimited everything plan on sprint...man, so glad I'm not with true blue or big red, I'll keep sprinting away with my cheap phone bill

It should depend on whatever the phone is capable of which is usually not as fast as smartphones.
But yeah thats true and it seems like theyre playing it off as some great deal to those who dont read the fine print or bother comparing.
