[Q] Trouble with rooting and wifi tethering-HELP! - HTC Aria General

Hi, New here and have been trying to root and get my phone to wifi tether.
Ive read over many, many pages and like my user name suggest. I have become more confused. Im not very good when it comes to computers in fact the computer Im using for this is a 2003 with windows XP. A dinosour and not a strong one.
I have the unrevoked 3 on my the computer. I went through all the steps. And the unrevoked said waiting for root (can restart if this doesnt work) at this point it restarted it self.
So am I done with this part or did it not finish? Is there something I should see on my phone after. I'm lost. I really need this rooting and wifi tether.
Please someone help me.
Okay, Ive got it to go all the way through until it said it was done. Now what I still dont see any differance is there a place I should look to see this?

You can tell you are rooted by looking for the superuser app in your app pantry. Unrevoked should also have flashed clockwork recovery onto your phone. You will have to flash a rom to get tethering on your phone. I don't feel like typing out everything here, so come into the IRC sometime. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#liberatedAria

Okay I'm rooted now.
Do I have to install a file Manager now? I have a Wifi app. installed now I cant get it to work though. Am I missing something?
If I have to install a file manager which is the best?

Astro or Estrong
first thing you should do when you are rooted, is make a nandroid backup.
And then install the Free Wifi Tether app, or install the latest Liberated Froyo rom,
which has tethering over USB, and Wifi hotspot built in.

Have it all done. Thank you very much Anthony1s and the people at IRC. Very helpful and patient. Im pretty much new to computers and this phone stuff. He made it simple.
I have a few questions still. When the new latest ROM comes out is there a easy way to find it? Like a place to look ect.
When turning on Wifi tether I assume that it uses my megabytes from my phone plan even though the simbol on the top is not there when tethering. Am I right about this? Or is it free? Can At&t find out and give me a tethering charge?
All help has been greatly appericated. Thank you

You just check the official thread for the ROM you are following. If its one of attn1's - he updates is good about updating the first post.
As long as you aren't having any issues and are happy with the way everything is working, there isn't really a need to check for updates. Unless you're obsessive like me.
Currently AT&T does not check to see if you are tethering on your own accord, so at the moment - the built in tethering is free!

Yes, a little obsesive. Now more so because of being able to do this. I want the latest and best ROM. I'll admit I liked some of the original ROMs features and smoothness a little more, but all the extra stuff greatly out weighs this.
So, when I use the wifi tether connected to my laptop or another phone its not using any of my megabytes from my data or internet plan? It just seems to me that it would.

depends how you're keeping track of your data. I know some apps that track your usage - don't even see tethered traffic.

i would imagine that data use is kept at at&t's end so teathering would use data same as you surfing the net from the phone.

Tethering built into 2.1 RUU for the Sprint Hero has

Hey guys I rarely, if ever, post anything, but I made a discovery yesterday that I just tested and wanted to let everyone in on it. I have the **Leaked** but now **Official** "RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release" installed on my phone. My phone had not been rooted and I decided to upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 yesterday (just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger sooner). While I molesting the new features I went to mount the phone as a disk drive and noticed there were some additional options. Once you plug in the USB into the phone, access the pull-down menu from the status bar and press "Charge Only". You will be greeted with another menu that, among other things, has an option for "Internet Sharing" select this and the phone will install some software on your computer. After that your computer will be able to utilize your phone as a modem. Now I haven't tried this over just a 3G connection as I live out in the country and my service is terrrrrible out here, but what I was able to confirm is that this works over WiFi with no problems. I turned off the Wifi card on my laptop and enabled the Wifi on the phone. A few moments later I got the connection indicator on my laptop (Windows Vista) and away we go. I posted this using the connection. Can anyone confirm this works over 3G?
Screen shots posted below. (Sorry about the blurry pics, I don't have the steadiest hands)
did you update with the RUU?
FYI, this is not "wifi" tethering, it's "wired" tethering.
good to know internet sharing was in the final!
If I understand your question correctly, yeah I updated with the RUU but I wasn't really interested in rooting the phone.
Yes it works, but you need to change your PRI

In other words, no it does not work if you ran the RUU. You would have to be rooted, flash an Eris based ROM, and then update using the SprintUpdate2.zip Damageless posted.

Aside from "Flashing an Eris ROM breaks your PRI" he wouldn't find much. Sometimes you just gotta let it slide and lend a hand.
Are you guys talking about the same thing he is? He said he ran the RUU and is not rooted. He said he doesn't get good 3g where he lives but what he did was turn off wifi on his laptop and enable it on the phone. He enabled internet sharing and it shared his internet connection with the laptop.
This isn't wifi tethering like we usually describe it, but he is describing a different situation than the one you guys are talking about. Unless I missed something in the posts.

You're both right and wrong.
I was assuming that he rooted his phone before updating to 2.1, thought he just made a mistake by adding the ruu part.
And he was asking about 3g tethering since he could do it over wifi.
To answer his question: You cannot tether that way if you ran the official RUU...that is until an exploit is found and you root your phone.
PDAnet will still work for you though
He probably has one of the few Sprint PRI's that allows MNS....bastage.....
Thanks guys, I'll take my laptop to work tomorrow and give it a try with and without PDANet. Thanks for all of the feedback.
What is you PRI number?
Pri version: 2.20_003
I have the same PRI number. How did you get the network sharing to work? Did you download any software?
yeah we need to find out if this new PRI will allow wired tethering, but I don't want to lose root
we need a few people (read: guinea pigs) to test it out
Ok, I got the network sharing via wired tether to work with WIFI. Now if I can get it to work on 3g.
Edit:
I tried to use the 3g network and it will not allow you to wire tether. It will keep popping up error 67 which "Data Call Failure". Boo.
I'm currently trying to figure out where exactly the PRI is stored in a ROM, so I can make update.zip's of different PRI's, to allow tethering.

I've been digging through for a while now, off and on, trying to find this myself. I PM'd flipz and asked, but haven't received a response, but i'm sure he knows how/if this could be done. I'm very interested if you do find something out, let me know!

The hero has always been able to share wifi using the usb tether. The 3G sharing will be disabled for you as always. Sorry to burst your bubble this is not something new. In fact, way back before we had root you could use a trick to tether the 3G over usb by turning off mobile network and then enabling the MNS while turning the mobile network back on. It was just a bug that someone found to bypass the 3G sharing lockout. After we got root no one really needed that trick anymore.

Question about USB Tethering

Yea I just got the Tmo Vibrant the other day and I can't get the usb tethering to work. I tried with the pda.net app that came with the phone and had no luck at all. This is a stock phone, it hasn't been rooted or anything. Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get this to work, or point me in the right direction. I been searching for the past 2 days and came up with nothing. I know about wifi hotspot but that looses connection on me after 5min. Im looking for straight usb tethering. Appreciate it.

you're in the USA on T-mobile, when you say wi fi tethering but you aren't rooted, what program are you using? Rooting should solve this problem, it is very quick and the instructions are in the sticky thread in this forum.
then install Rom Manager (in same thread as rooting)
then follow instructions here for the Mobile AP software that samsung wrote for the galaxy S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760243
as far as I know, this is the most versatile wi-fi tethering program since it doesn't create an ad-hoc network, it is true access point. be sure to use clockwork recovery (available in the rom manager app from the market) to install it since it is a .zip not .apk
I was using the wifi hotsoot on my hd2. That phone is gone now though. It would only hold a connection for a couple of secs though. Im not too sure I want to root my phone though. What I really want to know is, does your phone have to be rooted to be able to access usb tethering.
PDA.net does work fine on your non-rooted phone. Allow the computer side of the installation install the drivers and it will install the phone side too. I used it on my Samsung Moment before I got my Vibrant also. But the rooted path is a much better solution if you want to give it a try. Always plenty of people willing to help here if you have any questions.
Thank you guys for your suggestions. I appreciate it
Do you guys use pda.net or another program. Because correct me if I'm wrong don't you have to pay for pda.net?
I use PDAnet and it is free, but for it to work, you have to install the software on the computer as well and the drivers for the phone. I love PDAnet because when you are browsing the internet on the computer and you get a text, the message will pop up on the screen of the PC and you can reply from there, no need to pick up the phone...
I use easytether. It does the job but I'm not sure if you have to be rooted. I don't think you do.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
A friend uses PDANET on his MyTouch Slide since he doesn't want to root.
I do recommend the rooted method though.
I wirelessly tethered today (home internet went down) for ~1 hour on 3G and it was almost as fast as our internet normally is. Nothing special to install on the computer & it's always ready for you just in case you need it.
You can always unroot later if you don't like it, pretty simple.
All you need is either Behold II USB driver or having Samsung Kies installed and it's 100% free, or just change USB mode to Kies and plug it to Cradlepoint CTR-500 router and you're hooked.
I rooted and used mobile AP (see post 2). This has been, for me, the easiest and most reliable solution.
I'm in the "I've rooted and am using the WiFi mobile Hotspot" application crowd. Honestly, the ability to have the phone become a mobile AP was 80% of the reason I rooted the phone.
My phone seems to continue to receive emails and txts while acting as an AP and while I' haven't tested it I wouldn't be surprised if it still received calls...
worth rooting for imho...

Calls work as well.
I will drop T-Mobile for the first carrier that has a non-locked down Android 2.2 phone with comparable specs to the Vibrant that doesn't remove the tethering app and/or charges an arm and a leg for tethering.
I think I'm going to start looking around.
Also, are these phones starting to sell more than they were before? I'm still waiting for a replacement on backorder and it still hasn't even shipped to me yet. It's been a week. Last one shipped the next day (off backorder).
If I have to use this HD2 for another week, I'm killing 8 kittens.

Did you flash android on the hd2
is there a way to tether without rooting? i read the thread and i am getting mixed responses. everyone says rooting is better but is it possible without a root?
bump, any information i search on google seems outdated
Xda search is like ten times worse.
Kies for usb tether is an easy solution free and doesn't require root access - just look for the various ways to download kies and look for the USB drivers that should be searchable.
I've been using android-wifi-tether (requires root) for wifi tether and it does a good job - might have to check out mobileAP since most seem to have good success with it.
Appreciate it

sprint hot spot is free?

Hey everyone,
im new to the android OS. i rooted the phone and today i decided to mess with the sprint hot spot feature. i wasnt prompt any error codes or have any fee agreement pop up. i simply click activate and bamm, wifi. so the question is, would i be charge the $30 since nothing was prompt or is it a sneaky thing sprint do and bill me later? or maybe it was a feature one click root did. thanks for the answer. i tried to search but couldnt find a solid answer.
I'd be careful with that! Might be getting that $30 fee added on as a surprise. If you are rooted, you don't need hotspot, just download Wifi tether from the market. it's free for sure. no surprises!
I also second that, I would stay away from the Orig Sprint Hotspot feature if you are not paying for it. Dont be surprise if you see a $30 charge on the bill, like stated above from jirafabo just root like you did already and use the wifi tether program if you really need some sort of wifi tethering. It operates on the "N" 802.11 network so as long as your laptop can see a "N" network you can connect.
alrighty. by any chance anyone figure out how to make the phone tether over usb by using the option already available once plugged in? i dont have wireless N and just want a one click system.
I don't think wifi tether uses N. It should work with the usual a//b/g channels
Sent from my Epic 4G
you can try wifi tether and see if you dont broadcast on the "n" network, but when I go over the wifi icon on the laptop the epic is running radio 802.11n adhoc network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804 <----now you can install this, it run on the 802.11g radio infrastrucrture mode. This is what I use since my companys laptop will not connect to wifi adhoc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803335 <-----found this for you, it is a kernel what will allow usb tethering if you will like to try.

Did you try using it as a hotspot? Mine starts up without any prompts and I can see if from the computer but I can't get on the internet. I noticed that as soon as I activate the hotspot it kills the 3g signal. I assumed this was Sprints way of protecting it. I didn't think it was a problem on my end.
I have been using mine rooted for a while with the wireless tether app 2.0.9pre5 (i think). I think this is just because of the signal quality i'm getting, but my 3G speeds are only around .5mbps down and .3mbps up (if i'm lucky, lol). Anyone else getting anything faster? I have only been on sprint for a couple months now and prior to that, i had AT&T, which seemed a bit faster. I realize there are differences between the networks, but i would have figured EVDO to be nearly the same speed.

The built in USB tether doesn't work for me (I don't have the PAM/hot spot add on).
But I use Easy Tether for USB tethering. It works fine. Google it.

Okay, just installed this on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a charm.
Wifi Tether is a nice app, but the solution above is hands-down superior and the way to go. Very simple, works in infrastructure mode so it will act as an AP for anything, and is nicely integrated in with the rest of the software through the settings panel.
This is DA BOMB!
One question from a noob, though: I applied this MOD through clockworkrecovery, the same way I flashed the MixUp kernel. This didn't replace the kernel or anything, right? I'm not running a different kernel now, am I?

No it didn't...recovery flashing = just replacing the files in the zip to the ones in your system...in this case it replaced only the MobileAP.apk and a few other files..and thats it. The kernel should be fine.

Questions About WiFi Tethering With The G2

I have the opportunity to buy a Sprint LG G2 but would like some input from this community about the WiFi tethering capabilities of this device. I currently have an LG OG and there are issues with the WiFi tethering on it but I also have an LG Nexus 5 that runs WiFi thethering flawlessly. Since this device is said to be similar to the Nexus 5 I was hoping the Wifi tethering worked well on it also. I use FoxFi WiFi tethering app on most of my devices. It does not work on the LG OG however. I just basically want to know which tethering app works and which one doesn't.
THANKS!!
Sprint completely blocks all tethering access. Even through foxfi and open garden etc. You have to pay for the tethering service. The mobile data is indeed truly unlimited but the catch is its LIMITED to there mobile. As far as I know there is no way around it unless you root the device your wanting to tether but I'm not even positive that will work.

Thanks for your reply but apps like FoxFi allow you to tether without being detected for tethering. You still are deducted for data usage but not tethering. I was mainly asking if tethering apps work on this device because the one I'm getting is on Boost mobile, its not 4G but their 3G is good and for the price its actually great. So, if someone with this device that is rooted would kindly install Foxfi and tell me if it allows you to tether it to your PC I would appreciate it very much....Thanks..
Right I tried it on a unrooted Sprint g2 and I couldn't find ANY workarounds at all. That's what my input was on so yea. Someone else will chime in for you your welcome.
In order to get tethering working on the G2 for Sprint you must be rooted. Instructions are in the sprint develolment forum. Tethering apps do not work. The method is to modify the stock tethering app. Its the only current method available.

I know how to root this device and understand that it needs to be rooted to use wifi tether to make it work. I had a feeling this device had the same problem as the LG OG on tethering....I have TrevE's WiFi Tether on my OG and though I can get internet connection and download regular files, for some reason I can't download torrents and I've tried every setting combination possible. I was hoping this device had the same system as the Nexus 5 and not the OG..
Its titled "native hotspot" cant post links right now. short on time. As far as torrents go all sprint has to do is block torrent sites, and ip addresses associated. If you have tethering and cant do torrents... its likely blocked on sprint's side. Btw, downloading torrents via mobile data is a bad idea and I strongly advise you dont do so for many reasons.

Thanks, I'll try to find the post...I've used wifi tethering on a few different Boost Service (sprint) phones with no problems what so ever....if I used FoxFi Tethering App. I can usb tether using PDAnet and it will work but most of the time I need to be able to use WiFi.
May I ask exactly what your concerns are about downloading torrents via mobile data? I've done it for a couple years now without any problems...
Update: I looked it up and it looks good except that I won't be able to update the Rom at this time...
I dont have concerns about torrents, but you should. Frankly, if you dont know why or havent researched it, Im not one to tell you. Good luck.

Well, I appreciate all your input anyway....I just have to believe there is someone on this forum that has their device flashed to Boost that knows what I am talking about.
I do know what you are talking about. I have a G2. Ive used pdanet and alot of other tethering apps. The thread I pointed you to is the only way to tether on the G2 right now on Sprint, period. There are no other known mods or.apps for tethering on the G2. If that mod will work on Boost I have no idea and I assume there are very few that have a g2 on Boost, if anyone does.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was saying you didn't know what you were talking about, I apologize if it sounded as if I did. I was just hoping someone here had theirs on Boost and was familiar with how tethering worked on it. From what I can tell reading that thread and the thread on the Rom you have to have for the tethering mod, its pretty stable and the features are good too. I have been trying to figure out what to do because I have the opportunity to get a G2 or HTC One for the same price and am having a hard time making up my mind on which one will work the best for me. I prefer the G2 for its hardware but the development is better on the One. I really appreciate your help though, as I have said before....

So, there is still no way to tether a non-rooted Sprint phone?

If you wonder if it sucks to have 5-6 years of no-hassle tethering then go to 1.5 years of no tether because the root community fragmented out your phone model/build, then you are right, it does suck, a lot.
Never EVER getting a phone with a locked bootloader again. Ever. Jesus why did I get this phone. Sprint wants 10-20$ dollars to use my existing data on another screen? ooo that frosts me.
Please tell me that, no Blakestr, you are wrong. Here is the easy solution. Don't worry if an OTA snuck through your phone, this will still work.
PDA net has not worked at all, it doens't generate an SSID, even though I downloaded the apk from their website. Don't have option to use USB tether (this is for one of those chinese android units (atoto) so I can have internet from my phone when I drive.

I'm pretty sure there is a hotspot hack that works on the current rom.
I'm still on the original rom,
I blocked updates to prevent my hotspot hack being 'fixed' via OTA ROM.
But, I keep seeing threads about hotspot hack after ota updates.
I'm on my phone posting this,
So linking kinda difficult.
Search this GS7+ sprint forum
And the GS7 sprint forum.
This Thead for NON-ROOT methods for root tricks.
This hotspot hack should still work.

This one still works on my S7 Edge with the June 22 update. I believe if your Sprint phone is UICC unlocked by Sprint, you can also edit The APN setting, at least I could after I had them unlock it.
i can confirm the same. My APN section is completely accessible. Is it maybe because I had already modified the radio entries as in the post above? My hotspot is open and my phone is completely unlocked. Strange
