How to combat T-mobile's 5GB soft cap - G2 and Desire Z General

so as everyone knows knows T-mobile started to throttle speeds once a user passes 5GB of data. Well here is how to go back to unthrottled speeds.
Simply click menu-> settings -> Wireless & networks -> mobile networks
then you are going to want to click to use only 2G networks. Click back and wait till it connects to edge.
then go back and uncheck Use only 2G networks
(must repeat upon reboot)
You should now be connected to an throttled 3G network. Personally i was getting about 60 kbps before i did it and after i get around 2000 kbps.

Good to know. I haven't been too worried until lately. Started using tethering at work to watch a lot of Netflix and Hulu when things are slow. I may be giving this a try very soon.

This is a great tip, thank you for it. I attached a pic of my results:

Sorry if I'm necroposting, but this helped me a lot, thanks so much!

Lol... guys, you do know there is already a thread about this in development, right?
You guys really need to learn to use the search button before posting duplicate threads.
I already had someone steal my work today but this looks unintentional and is a far inferior method to disabling the data cap (aka throttle). Check out development if you want a more permanent method...

How many bars do you have? Have you done the fix to get rid of the proxy? Possibly start running script manager with the turbo 3g script. Let me run a speed test and ill let you know my.speeds.
Edit: speed test isn't connecting right now but ill try later and get a screenshot of my speeds

I get between .8 & 1 mbps down with one to two bars on MIUI. I assume that's average, but I rarely use 3G, I'm usually on wifi.

I use get almost 1.5 Mbps near my home. Since last Nov, I'm lucky to get 200Kbps down and 480Kbps up. That's right, faster up then down. I guess Sprint thinks my EVO is a server. In the same area I have 4bars.
I'm not looking forward to the IPhone stooges looking for unlimited data.
Speed test app is being stupid and won't locate a server for me. However, at home in the boondocks with an airrave I get 1.3mb down and like 350 kb up. When I'm in town (20 miles from home, lol) I get probably 600-1000 kb down and 150-400 kb up.

As we all know, HTC and Sprint borked downloads for apps like Rhapsody, Mog, Thumbplay.
I recently ran across the subject and i found a fix. It is very simple.
1. Get your MSL, There are many ways, call Sprint, Download the app MSL Reader from the market, CDMA workshop
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode
4. Click Advanced
5. Scroll down to HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address
6. Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to 0 (zero)
7. Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
8. Go enjoy Downloads and a .20-.60 mbps increase in 3G speeds!
-All credit to original finder of this fix, i am just passing it along and found the speed increase. Also when you flash a new rom it will back to old settings so remember to re-apply and it wont make you more vulnerable to anything.

funny thing is i tried that and only to find out my evo already came with those settings. just unrooted and got s-on again so i could return it to sprint. ever since i got my evo about a week ago reception been fine then all of a sudden for the past two days its been on 1x it hardly ever gets 3g now, and when it does its just for a split second. is that normal for sprint, only reason i ask is i mainly use my verizon phone for calls and such.

This comes to show me just how little data one gets with Verizon and AT&T. Wow, one large download or 3 Netflix movie and you're done for the month!! No thanks I'll pass. You guys could show off all your network speeds all you want, at the end of the day who gives a **** how fast you go if you can't really use it for anything without going over your limit. I'll stay with Sprint and my unlimited data. Being on the list of the first to get LTE also helps my decision to stay with sprint.

It's impossible to support millions of customers on a network without it straining. They prioritize quality of the network over unrestricted access. So it works great for as long as you're allowed to use it, or pay overages.

Phone signal in basement

Hey, I'm currently working with a HTC HD2 with a Froyo Android on it and having difficulties in the basement.
I've recently moved into a new rental house (am a University student) and was given a room in the basement (not much choice there since I signed up late for housing). Anyways I've noticed I get 1-2 bars in the basement which is fine (so I thought) but I'm not receiving any text or phone calls! Whenever I walk outside with my phone there's multiple texts waiting for me and whenever I meet my parents they question why I never pick up the phone (I dont even have missed calls showing).
Now with my closest friends I have whatsapp/fb chat/google talk which is fine but for employers who I give my resume to, or friends I occasionally meet up with they have no way to contact me :S so was wondering if there's any way to boost my signal in the basement?
I've read about a few signal boosters and repeaters but they are costing hundreds of dollars which is out of my price range but really do need to fix something or my social life is going down the drain next semester :S
Thanks in advance
forgot to mention, it wont even send texts as well at two bars... so sad T__T

Go outside. Solves both your social life problem and signal problem.
Maybe AT&T will have better signal and you can just switch to like Straight Talk.

Signal booster apps are a scam. I hope you didn't pay for it.
You should connect it to a strong wifi network and use wifi calling.

Hey, no didn't pay for it but I personally disagree. It feels like it does help (although the difference isn't very much)
And yea was debating on going pure WiFi but seems like a lot of hassle to have two different numbers, or is there a way to keep same number?? Sorry not very sure how WiFi networks work, if you could recommend a good one that'd be great

Most T-Mobile smartphones have built in wifi calling. No porting or different numbers. You just connect to a wifi network and enable it in the settings.

[Q] How much data do you use per month? (heavy users)

Didn't know where else to put this so mods please move if need to. Only found older threads, just looking for more current usage.
This is just a general question to all heavy data users regardless of carrier. I'm just curious because when I called to check on my plan the customer service rep was flippin out and said I'm in the TOP 1 percent of data users. I have service with Verizon wireless and thankfully I have unlimited data still. Just looks like I'm not upgrading anytime soon
I use between 10-20 a month on AT&T unlimited plan.
