HtcDialer and contacts - Wildfire General

This may sound like a rant but I can't help it.
HTC dialer is really bad. In fact, is so bad I wouldn't dare calling it an app. It's more like a piece of malicious code.
I've read the forum and tried to find a way to completely remove it from sense-based roms, no luck so far.
There are several problems I'd like to point out in case you're wondering why I hate the dialer so much.
1. Can't list through contacts cause it auto-dials whenever you dare to touch the list.
2. When it does that, there's no way to hangup that call cause proximity sensor won't let you.
3. There's no option to turn off the annoying haptic feedback, it won't comply with global settings.
4. There's no option to change appearance, except perhaps manually editing the apk.
5. Pulling up and down to answer or reject a call is a FAILED concept because pulling the phone out of the pocket will answer the call.
ATM I've decided to use a NON-sense based rom only because of the dialer.
I'm willing to give up on ALL HTC apps just to get rid of it.
Good riddance HtcDialer.

That's relative to the person using it.

10 things I hate about my HD2

Hi,
My first post - sorry about the agressive title, but I really am a little frustrated with my new HD2 which I have had for about 3 weeks now. Some of the things may be due to my ignorance and others are to me clearly errors:
1) Alarm clock does not always work. I set the alarm and set the phone to silent (I use that every day). The alarm goes of, but only displays a message on the screen and no sound (which reallly does not wake me up). I tried experimenting and turning up the ringer volume and setting a new alarm. The result is that the phone uses my e-mail sound for the alarm! If I turn the phone on/off everything works fine again for a while. I have set the flag is the settings specifying that alarm should sound even i silent mode.
2) Data connectivity drop outs/malfunction. I can have all signal bars on a 3G signal and the browser gives me "Not able to display page". I've tried Opera and IE and I've also tried closing all tasks, nothing helps. If I turn the phone on/off everything works fine again for a while.
3) Not able to delete multiple mails at once. On my iPhone I can click Edit, mark the mails I want to delete and then click delete. I get a lot of spam/commercials that I delete without reading, so its a nice feature for me.
4) Keyboard is just way to sensitive - I make so many typos on the HD2 keyboard and the arrow keys are next the space key, so many times I also end up pressing those
5) Speakerphone - the volume can wake up dead people and it is not possible to turn it down (enough)
6) Dropped network connections/no access - The phone seems to switch constantly between E/H/3G connections and sometimes inbetween I just don't have network access at all, e.g. I can't make/receive calls.
7) Video recording. If there is just a little movement in the scene - I get seasick from watching the recording
8) Freeze during incoming call. The phone just freezes and the Start menu changes to: "We're sorry..." - Soft reset required...sigh!
9) Mails deleted on the phone (OUtlook/Exchange account) is kept on the server and visa versa. On my iPhone, deleting a mail on the phone or in Outlook instantly (with the next send/receive) removes it from the phone/pc. On my HD2 that does not seem to happen
10) Charging via USB/PC - I use that a lot, also on pc's that do not have ActiveSync installed. On the iPhone you can do that and when you plug it in it brings up a dialog asking what you want to do - ONCE. On the HD2 I get a messsage saying "New hardware is detected" every single time I unlock the phone e.g. to read a new message, mail etc. That is so annoying.
I'm on 1.48 and applied all three released hotfixes (Camera, SMS and SD card). I've only installed Tomtom and Navigon (trial) and nothing else.
Any help is appreciated as I'm stuck with this phone for the next 6 months.
Thanks,
Jacob

Throw it away, better yet send it to me!
I mentioned that in another thread, but I think it fits better here :
What I hate about the HD2:
1- Screen bugs. You must rely on your luck to get a good working screen
2- Voicecall quality: for some people it's acceptable but for too many others, the quality is one of the worst you can get for a 1000$ phone. Noise, crackle, distortion etc..
3- SMS loading time is miserable. HTC still is not aware of the problem or they are ignoring us because they know that their software code is buggy and needs recoding
4- Some if not most HTC devices have some hardware flaw like screen not evenly aligned with the frame that puts some question marks whether if it's going to put us into trouble in the future or not ie: top notch ( can leak water, dust, backlight, whatsoever ) or something like that http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...4&postcount=94
5- Mediocre back speaker performance. And when it rings, it really feels like a cheap phone.
6- loose keypad. That's not really a problem but sometimes it's annoying, it also feels cheap in hand although the build quality is almost excellent.
7- Poor battery life, I mean really poor. If I forget to charge it at night, forget about calling me the next day.
8- Very sharp lens frame. That's not a big deal if you keep your device in its case but if not, beware, this thing can scratch anything it touches.
That's for me, you must also note that what I wrote is subjective and based on a comparison with my old XDA and HTC devices.
Hope that clears up things.
Hi WB,
Yep - I've read most of the posts (that looked relevant) on the Leo forums for the last month or so. I'm also aware that I can e.g. install a different alarm clock, connect to the standard button/place on the screen (described on Pocketnow), I also know there is a sensitivity tweak, I can install alternative keyboards and so on, but come on should that really be necessary on a state-of-the-art phone like the HD2?
Best regards,
Jacob
yeah, I got f-****ed by the alarm clock twice .
blame myself for not testing out.
Funny, that I do not seem to have your problems in the even no. of your points 2,4,6,8,10
A question of each piece of HD2?

I gotta feeling you have totally different device man Seems this is really a question of each piece of device... E.g. I've no bugs with screen, keyboard, calls, alarm clock... Also after the official fixes and some additional patches (DAMIEN's camera fixes) the photos and video in mpeg4 is awesome (you can check out my photos on forum).
sorry for stating the obvious but maybe you actually still want an iphone. sell Leo and get an iphone 3GS mate as you clearly still stuck on iphone.I have many annoying things on mine but i am sure that customs roms will fix all these issues when we can flash them. its the same with most new devices mate, they are just not perfect and patience is needed. the raw power under the hood of this thing has not been tamed yet dude so hold tight. it took the HTC Rhodium to finally get a good blend of touchflo 3D and winmo. it will get better dude
OK, so let's try to help a bit, shall we?

Yes, that is a problem that Windows Mobile has had from the beginning. I've got no idea why they don't get that fixed, but whatever...
...there are good replacemet alarm programs, like G-Alarm and others, that are much better that the built in alarm. Try one of those.
2) Data connectivity drop outs/malfunction. I can have all signal bars on a 3G signal and the browser gives me "Not able to display page". I've tried Opera and IE and I've also tried closing all tasks, nothing helps. If I turn the phone on/off everything works fine again for a while.

Sorry, I can't help with this. Maybe it's a problem of the phone's radio firmware that doesn't work well with your carrier's network.
Watch out for radio ROM upgrades!

Disable Windows Error Reporting with BSB Config.
Error Reporting is responsible for several problems, including music player crashes and others.
9) Mails deleted on the phone (OUtlook/Exchange account) is kept on the server and visa versa. On my iPhone, deleting a mail on the phone or in Outlook instantly (with the next send/receive) removes it from the phone/pc. On my HD2 that does not seem to happen

Every change I make on my phone Outlook gets immediately synchronized with my Exchange account and vise vers, so maybe you just have not enabled push.

Hardware flaws? Not at all, the HD2 is probably the highest quality phone ever created. Of course that does not eliminate the possibility of production faults, but saying that 'most' devices have flaws is ridiculous.

Well, actually, according to professional tests, it's one on the better speakers among phones. Not the best, but better than e.g. the iPhone and lots of others.

True.
Okay, now to my own list (which is a bit shorter):
1) Storage. Most people who buy the phone probably don't have a clue about hov to free up the internal memory, how to delete Youtube caches, the Copilot executable files etc. That is a huge issue, because those same people also have no clue about how to get applications from outside the Marketplace, which doesn't allow installations to the storage card. This is a huge issue for non-powerusers, and given the popularity of the phone, there's probably lots of users running into it.
2) The music player: There is no search bar or (alphabetic) scrollbar.
3) UI flaws: Swiping through TouchFlo Tabs should be fluid, like swiping through pages on the iPhone's Springboard. Scrolling in TouchFlo is not optimized, can be made a bit better via registry (speed, friction), but still laggy sometimes. Pinching in Opera is much too slow, that's much better in Safari. RSS Hub lags a lot.
4) The messaging applications. I've not had any problems so far and I've turned it off in favor of the default one anyways, but HTC should not have created it at all. The default one was okay and similar to the Email one as part of Outlook, there was nothing wrong.
5) The radio firmware - buggy as hell, that's all I have to say about it.
6) The camera flash brightness and/or exposure should adjust according to the distance of the target, which is determined by the auto focus, to prevent overexposure.
Other than that: Great phone
No phone is perfect these days, unfortunately, but this one, I think, comes closest.

I agree with you. However windows mobile devices are not as "simple" as the Iphone that I believe you have just come from. I know I risk opening up world war 3 by merely mentioning iphone in this post so let's move on quickly.
Regretably, as an early adopter, you will have to invest some considerable time tweaking the device to get it to what you thought you had bought. Most seasoned winmobile owners are used to this, hence the existence of XDA-Developers.
Once innovations like SPL/Hard SPL are with us then you will, if you wish, get the opportunity to change your roms at will and customise your device ad-nauseum. If this is not the journey you wish to take then you will have to reconsider your purchase and go for something else.
I'm definitely not being arsey, just being a realist.
Hope you make the right decision for you.
Cheers

@Seed_al: This is really good stuff - thank you very much for taking the time to answer my post. I will give BSB Config a try and also G-Alarm (I really depend on the alarm to wake me up )
The tip for selecting multiple messages is also great. Another n00b question - how do you enable push for an Outlook account?
Thanks,
Jacob

In fairness, he's getting (mostly) constructive responses, so if he gets answers to problems then isn't that what this whole forum is about?
I do actually agree that there are too many "slagging off" threads, but as long as something good comes from it then it's worthwhile. If someone reads it and fixes issues they have with their phone, then who cares about the people that simply agree and flog their phone. That's 1 less person whining on the forums! lol

Excellent answer and you are right - the unmentionable (is that a word) puts much harder restrictions on what can be done and by whom.
You are also spot on with the earlier adopter - I'm always doing that, not only with phones Maybe I should just see this as a new opportunity to explore the WM world I just need to sort out the most basic issues, like alarm, keyboard, mail etc. I got a 6-month contract with the phone, so I definately keeping it and I really like the hardware side of it...

Well, with a bit of luck, you'll get to see a lot more within those six months... maybe we HD2 owners will be among the first to be able to try out Windows Mobile 7
But yes, I fully agree with wacky.banana. There is a relatively high learning curve with Windows Mobile and it can't be denied that there are/were issues with the first devices/software versions that we early adopters have/had to deal with.
On the other hand, we get some great advantages over the unmentionable phone, but of course also disadvantages - there is just no perfect phone - but I personally love the HD2, think it has a lot more advantages than problems. In the end, there probably will never be a perfect phone, and it will always be a personal decision.

Disagree. He has the right to say what he wants. Besides he is asking for help, not whinging.
The whole thread was constructive before you jumped in. Please don't act in such a way as to get this thread closed. The OP has the right to say what he is saying whether you agree with him or not.
That's democracy and is what free speech is all about.

In fairness mate, you should have just not commented if you felt like that. You can't promote the free speech of the OP whilst telling someone not to post what they think. It's gone already, and not many people took any notice. It's no biggie, so don't make it one
Edit:
I just re-read that post and want to make it clear that I wasn't trying to tell you what to do. I just want to keep the forums as friendly as possible, so offered an opinion.
@onkeldunkel
Tap the notifications bar to bring up the notifications screen, then tap the network icon to open the comm manager. There, make sure 'Microsoft Direct Push' is activated.
If yes, then go to Start --> Connectivity --> ActiveSync (or wherever ActiveSync is in your Start Menu). There, tap on Menu --> Schedule.
This is where you can configure the Schedule for syncing with your Exchange server.
If this is set to 'as items arrive', then every change on your phone should immediately be synchronized with the server.
Let me know if it works.
@those people arguing above
I also hate all those 'I hate/sold my phone' threads, but this one here is not of that kind!
This one is not a troll thread for whining/complaining, it's a constructive thread asking for help, so please stop the fighting and don't destroy it.

Changing the Froyo default dialer

Ok got the update woohoo! and felt a tiny bit dissapointed that some Nexus issues still haven't been addressed boohoo!
I like the new browser and dialer buttons at the bottom now how do I change that default dialer into the far superior "Dialer one"? Is it possible?
I would like to do the same thing. Hopefully someone can figure out how to do it.
well i am just waiting for launcher pro to get that feature and will replace the default one anyways
Well, that is something I would like to do too...
Yep, weakest stock dialer I have seen in about a decade. Will be installing the first fix that hits.
The default android dialer is an embarrassment, I installed Dailer One and set it as default.
It is free from the market place and has full smartdialer functionality seen on the HTC Dialer. However, by default it doesn't search numbers, only names, so you will need to change a few settings to get everything right.
But once you do, it is perfect.

right, thats what we use the problem is linking the phone button on the froyo launcher to open dialer one instead of default google dialer
Yeah, I should have been more specific. The first thing that allows me to replace the stock shortcuts. I use dialer one also, have been since about 15 minutes after I turned the phone on for the first time and figured out I had a better dialer somewhere around 1995 or so. Whoever designed it, had anything to do with approving it all the way to Andy Rubin should be fired. And I mean kicked in the nuts, dragged across the parking lot, thrown in a ditch, and pissed on fired. In order to be an epic failure it would have to get better. Calling it crap would be an insult to turds everywhere.
Wow lot of exaggeration here
The stock dialer is not bad at all, it just doesn't suit your needs
I could go on about how craptacular Dialer One is after trying it, but I realize it just isn't for me, stock works just fine for my needs
What problem linking to the Dialer One app? Just replace the stock dialer link with the Dialer one link on the desktop.
If you use Launcher Pro, it will then ask you what dialer you want to make the default.
My LauncherPro Phone link opens Dialer one just fine on FroYo. No Special tricks involved.
Not exactky wht I meant, what I meant wa, the default icon, left side from apps drawer, when clicked to summon dialer one and not stock dialer, got it?
yea. launcher pro is a lot better than stock launcher anyway.

Launcher Pro is really good, and I used it with 2.1, but I prefer the layout of the Froyo launcher. I would also like to know how the change the phone shortcut to open dialer one instead of the default phone app.
While yes the default phone app does look better than dialer one, it is no where near as functional. Being able to type names to search for them on my phone is important to me because all my HTC phones since the wizard could do this. Long time smartphone uses should be annoyed by this, but if you are new to the game you just haven't experienced it.

Wow lot of exaggeration here
The stock dialer is not bad at all, it just doesn't suit your needs
I could go on about how craptacular Dialer One is after trying it, but I realize it just isn't for me, stock works just fine for my needs

If your needs stop at pushing ten numbers and hitting the dial button yes the stock dialer can meet your needs but smartphone users are used to more functionality. A lot more. I wasnt kidding when I said I had better dialers somewhere around the mid nineties. I did. That doesnt take much though when you need only add speed dial to have a more fully featured dialer than the stock android dialer. This is a smart phone, I have the expectation that my dialer will be similar to what has been in smartphones for years. That means, speed dial, t9 search of logs and contacts, intelligent search (brings the most frequently called numbers to the top of the list of numbers meeting the search criteria), and more. Does that sound much like the stock dialer? Are you actually aware of what dialers can do for you or how to use the functionality in dialer one? Because it doesnt sound to me like you understand what you are using or what can be done with those tools.
Get real, you don't have to dial 10 numbers to use the stock dialer. Just use the address book and hit dial. Besides most of my calls are already in my call log so It's super easy. Then of course there is the favorites tab.
I used dialer one and went back to the stock dialer because I like it better. You can't speak for all "smartphone users". You can only speak for yourself.
I cant speak for all smartphone users and should only speak for myself, true that. Lets examine further. Anybody think I'm pals with Jon Rubinstein? Bill Gates? Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo? I wish because I would be living in a big fancy house and drinking champagne on a corporate jet. Nope, just an ordinary joe like everybody else here and I'm fine with that. Now despite lacking my direct influence all these people have seen fit to put far more functionality into their smartphone dialers. Think maybe it was because millions of other peoples wishes shaped smartphones into what they are and what features are standard fare? I mean no one here thinks they did it because I asked right? Features vary among all the outfits but android dialer has NO features. None. Thats a pretty weak resume when compared to what others bring to the party.
Lets look at the specifics. Contacts is much slower than T9 when your contacts run up into the hundreds. Nor is browsing through a very long call log easy or quick without a means to search it and this is best done in the dialer itself because it means less clicks which equals less time to get where you are going. Going to faves is again more clicks than simple speed dial for the most frequently used numbers, I dont use it at all.
I hate to break this to you but getting work done is a core smartphone usage and not because of me, I'm just one guy out in the grind. Millions of other people in total are what got advanced dialer features into smartphones and they got there because they needed them. The stock dialers shortcomings are why there are so many dialers and other enhancements that add speed dial and search on the market. I am aware that smartphones are now going through a fundamental change in user base and they are not just for work anymore. A lof of people are using them and for many different reasons. I dont think my usage is any more imprortant than anyone elses but I dont think it is any way singular either. The stock dialer may work fine for you or anyone that doesnt need more capability but that doesnt mean that it is up to the standard of the segment. Its not. Thats a fact. Get real? lol

I took a look at dialer one, and, while it probably offers good functionality; it's nothing I can't get by having google gesture search & gesture bar installed; Stock dialer's fine for me and I have over 800 contacts. (facebook, twitter, Gtalk, last.fm, phonebook)
Gesture bar's intuitive too; so you can say G for example and if you've used it previously for grandmother, then it'll bring it up with just one. Quite sweet.
Saying that the stock dialer's crap though is kind of over the edge IMO, it's simple, usable, just like most of the default apps. That's why the market exists: for improved functionality. For the general user; stock's fine. For more advanced needs; see the market.
The address book has the drag bar on the right where you can get to anywhere in a second with just a drag of the finger.
So you're saying the stock dialer is fine for you but you dont actually use it except to tap 10 numbers and hit dial right? Not that you could do anything else with it but thats actually kind of funny.
It remains that you compare things with similar things and then make an objective determination about how something stacks up against those comparable items. Thats how I make a call on something. Isn't that kind of how its done? There is no dialer available which does less to my knowledge. Is it unfair to say the least capable tool of its type is crap? I'm honestly asking.
Dialer one itself is not the best dialer I have used. I had a better one over on winmo. The functionality was similar but it was more prettied up and had deeper integration. It is about the best I have tested so far for my usage on android though. I want to make it clear that I am not selling a dialer. My post from the start was that in my opinion that stock dialer is a turd and I want to use that shortcut for something else. Not a dialer one ad. This will be my last word on it since utilizing that shortcut is the real point of this thread. I will gladly respond off-line for those want to verbally *****slap me for being mean to the stock dialer.
Lol I don't even use the dialer application anymore, I just hit the search softkey - and type in in a small amount of the name I need to dial.. I've gotten use to this.
HTC does make their dialer application nicer than the stock Google experience, though.. I can really see why people would want to complain about this. HTC Sense for Android seems to have the implementation you people seem to urge for :/

Some ridiculous problems with HTC touch HD

Greetings.
I just bought me a new HTC touch HD and although overall seem a decent phone,it has some "features" ( or lack of it thereof) that I find awfully annoying to say the list.
Condisering that I am a noob regarding smart phones ( this is my first) I would REALLY appreciate if any guru's here will take the time to answer to my questions,as idiot proof as humanly possible ( I'm a retard... :/)
So here it goes:
1. I syncronized my e-mail account ( hotmail, windows live ) with my PC and that brought in all my e-mail contacts. In addition to that,I also have the phone contacts from my previous phone.
My problem is that now I have TON of contacts of all kind ( whenever I tap the "contacts" key) and I find it VERY annoying that it wont let me decide which contacts I'd like.
I mean,I will only like to see the contacts from my previous phone not ALL 160 e-mail contacts. Further more,I would like to have those contacts in my new HD but if I copy them from the sim card, then I will have ALL the contacts in double.
HD just wont let me "hide" either of them. Solutions if any please?
2. There is a ton of problems with syncing music files via WMP. They keep dissapearing ( shown with a ! in the library) and re-appearing but they wouldnt play etc. This isnt really a problem but I'm sure there are some geniuses out there that fixed that.
3. I would like to determine my own ( at least given the freedom to choose among a list) how my HD should sound like when I get an SMS. Ofcourse, there is ( as far as I can tell) no way in hell I can get anywhere NEAR such settings. Maybe someone could help out ?
4. The enormous clock display.I already read something about installing a 3rd party software but due to several reviews,it's a gamble. Since in some cases it didnt work, other got really slow and others down right screwed their HD's. So I wonder: is there any tweak ( some file that can be modified/erased) to fix this without having to install any additional soft/app?
5.Sometimes when I take my cell off the table ( after being "inactive" for several hours) the clock wont display the correct time ( I have to tap it for it to update to current time) and sometimes the upper half of the display looks as if the graphic card was damaged/smoked. Though as soon as I tap home ( or whatever it turns back to normal. Any ideas? P.S. I have gyrator2 and fingerkeyboard 2 installed)
5. I apologize for the wall of text and my poor english.
I would also like to thank to ALL members here for their absolute amaizing ability to help the community as well as the dev's for their amazing tweaks and app's for our smartphones.
This forum/site is the ABSOLUTE best I have ever seen in terms of help, support, development etc.
You guys are awsome. A big/giant/enormous/gianormous THANK YOU from me and my friends here in Norway. Your site is bookmarked and subscribed to since the first 3 min we found it.
Thank you!
Hi
I can help you out with a few points..
1. I had the same problem not only once...there is a little utility called DupeDeDupe which removes duplicate contact in your phone and is free (as far as I remember)...
There is also another app, which is much much much better - it lets you customize cleaning of your outlook, therefore the name OutlookCleaner...this one is not free though as far as I remember, but there are ways how to obtain software....just google...
use google for everything you need....anywas, I recommend using OutlookCleaner as the results were far more satisfying in my case..
2. I advice never to sync your music...I also do not like listening to music via phone - choice is yours though...I recommend Nitrogen Player instead of WMP...it is very simple yet much quicker, customizable and what not....just google the app, it is definitely here on xda somwhere...dont remember if its free...I never had problems with nitrogen player.. (of course we are talking about audio, not video, right?)
3. Go to settings -> sounds and notifications -> notifications tab -> for event choose Messaging: New text message -> below you have different options to choose from....
4. I dont know what clock you are talking about
5. this might be the manila flip or whatever it is called issue...it is built in in the system so whenever you go home, or wake up your phone, system flips the clock so you can see the epic animation google manila clock flip fix or something like that...you shoud defeintely find the fix here on xda..
Hope I helped you...google if you need anything else
Well,first of all,thank you.
You fixed at least half of my problems
Second,I dont have outlook on my HD. I got hotmail/windows live and that's it.
So...maybe you have alternative solutions.
The SMS alarm tone: fix'd. Thank you! Much to learn I have obviously.
The WMP thingy: downloaded and installed Nitro. Havent tested yet but I'm sure is better than anything else Bill Gates came up with. Again, thank you. How do I unninstall WMP btw?
The clock I'm talking about is the enormous one that covers hald the display. The one with animation you know? I want that GONE if at all possible.
Manila is an app that allows you to tweak your HD. I dont have it installed because there was a sufficient number of forum members that had bad experiences with it,everything from ruining other gadgets on the HD to completely rendering useless.
The vast majority was satisfied but however, the ones that werent were enough to matter. At least to me
So yeah, all in all you helped me a great deal and for that I thank you yet again.
You're a good man
as for the big clock at 'home'..you can flip upwards for the clock to disappear(like how you do scrolling)..hopefully it helps..if that's what you wanted...

If you are looking for alarm clock, I use G-alarm. Google it
For music. Try cut and paste or drug and drop from your PC to your Phone

setting up Droid 2 for my blind sister

My sister lost her vision last year at the age of 24 due to diabetic retinapothy. She is missing be able to text message, facebook, celeb gossip... you know, the important things in life We initially bought the Droid X for her, but It's going back in exchange for the Droid 2, which should be here on 9/9/10.
Problem with the X is the Android Eyes Free Shell and the Talking Dialer make use of either a trackball or a directional pad. The Droid X has neither. It's also difficult to navigate pretty much everything blind without a d-pad. Should of thought of that earlier. Oh well, the exchange process is very easy. The Android Eyes Free team developed the software around the Nexus one i assume, which has a trackball. Personally i think a d-pad is better for a blind person, as you can press down once to go down once. A trackball you might go down 2 or 3 depending on how much you rotate it.
I'm going to be updating this thread with our progress as well as what steps we took along the way. Hopefully this will end up being helpful for someone else in a similar situation. Blind people DO use the internet (even youtube!).
Here are the initial changes I want to make:
Locating Touch Sensitive buttons
I will go to a craft store and find something to put below the 4 touch sensitive buttons on the front of the phone, this way she will be able to find them. Im thinking 4 drops of some puffy glitter glue or something to that effect. Being diabetic she's also lost somesensitivity in her fingers, so something with texture will be needed.
Removing the Lock Screen
Slide to unlock is basically an impossible task for a blind person. The Droid 2 uses the stock vanilla lock screen I believe, does anyone know how to remove it? I could potentially replace it with a "shake to unlock" or whatever, and ideas here are appreciated.
Answering the phone
Again, here slide to answer isn't going to fly. Does anyone know: If you slide the keyboard out while the phone is ringing does it answer the call? Most slider phones I've seen operated like that, I'm hoping the Droid 2 does too. She will also have a bluetooth headset which should make it easy to answer, but if your blind trying to find your bluetooth headset in time to answer the call can be a problem, so i'd like her to be able to answer the phone without a headset as well.
Hanging up the phone
Can you slide the keyboard shut to end a call? What happens if your on a call and you slide the keyboard out and then closed, does that hang up the call? Another solution would be to make it so the power button hangs up the call, surely it can be remapped do that. Or is there an end call button somewhere on the hardware qwerty?
Ok, those are the first major things. Actually dialing a call is no problem once we get past the lock screen issue. She can double tap the home button to launch the voice dialer, or she can use the Android Eyes Free "Talking Dialer" to dial a number with her finger using swipe motions. It's pretty neat actually, give it a try if you haven't already. The Eyes Free Shell and the Moto Voice Command will take care of pretty much everything else.
Thanks in advance for your help!
I can confirm that the Droid 2 does NOT answer when sliding the phone open and does NOT hang up when sliding closed. Just tested this.
Edit: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762101
View that thread and search the app "no lock" in the market. Seems to do what you are looking for in the marketplace. You may also want to contact the developer to see about source code or see if it was a .apk that was removed.
Also in response to the glue idea:
I would test on another device because the screen has to be able to sense your impulse as well because it wont trigger unless it has a touch by a human hand. My guess it it reads the electronic pulse by the skin and that is how it picks it up.
about the unlock screen, I can say is once you do it enough times you know where is on the screen, I usually unlock mine while its not even all the way out of my pocket, also it vibrates when you touch the unlock area and it vibrates again as you pull it to the right...hope this helps
I don't have an Android phone yet, but I've seen a nice replacement for the stock locker, called WidgetLocker. You can modify it a lot (add your own apps, widgets etc.) but the most important thing for you is that you can move the unlock slider down to the bottom of the screen so it would be easier to unlock it.
Of course, the best solution is to remove completely the locker, but I don't know whether it's possible, so I'm just giving you another option

This page has been a big help: http://eyes-free.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/documentation/android_access/basics.html
Above link talked about No Lock, an app on the market that removes the lock screen. Although it turns out she is actually able to unlock the phone blindly, but it usually takes her a few tries. For now we are going with no lock...
Also the Droid 2 has an option in the Accessibility page to enable "use power button to end call" so that has been a big help.
So far the biggest problem with the Droid 2 is the keyboard really sucks for a blind person. The navigation keys are kind of awkwardly placed, and the keys are very flat. I wish I would of known about the LG Ally, as the appears to be the best Android phone for a blind person. Has physical buttons on the front to start/end calls, and the keyboard is WAY better (for a blind person anyways). Unfortunately Verizon only lets you exchange a phone 1 time, and we already bought the Droid X. So looks like I'd have to sell the Droid 2 and buy the LG Ally on eBay. Not sure if we are going to go that route.. might just try and make the best of it with the Droid 2.
I have a LG Ally wits a protective rubber case, invisible shield screen protector, and 2 batteries which I'm not currently using. I'll do a straight up trade for your Droid 2.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Made my account to reply to this (And because I got my Droid 2 2 days ago). Will be watching this thread. My son is 2 and nearly blind. We are exploring any and all ways to work around it. I'm currently learning braille so I can teach him, and looking into how to make phones and computers more usable for him. Hopefully your sister handles what's happened well and finds ways to keep up her life, goals, and hobbies
Thanks for posting this. Good luck with the project and keep us updated, please!
Need some help here too
Hi there,
This seems to be the only forum that I can find on this subject. I will definitely be checking out the LG Ally but I'm also looking at the Droid 2 Global (which my partner has bought for himself and I have been testing out).
I am a blind person with little vision and I have to find a smart phone that works for me, as I have hit the point where I need to access my work email, work calendar, and browser functions do be more efficient and effective.
The blackberry is out, as it doesn't work for blind people through Verizon.
The IPhone, though just coming out from Verizon, does seem to have a great VoiceOver application which works great for a blind person. However, I'm not sure I'm patient enough to type without a keyboard--though it is possible for a blind person to use it.
Your points about the LG Ally are helpful for me. Does it have an accessibility application like the Droid 2 Global?
In testing out the Droid Two Global, I have enabled the "accessibility application" and checked the read out checkbox in the settings. It has abled me to see most stuff and some of the pieces you put up on the post will help. What I am struggling with is the following:
When I access any part of the browser application, it doesn't read the page of the web site or any of the links. I'm wondering if there are key combinations I am not femiliar with that would make this work or does it do it at all?
Also, the calendar is not reading things to me as well. Any ideas?
In general, is there a button that I can press, that will get it to repete something or to read a screen. I currently am just arrowing back and forth to choose something. I also can hit the OK button when typing a message to read what is in the edit box.
The last issue, though I think it would get much easier as I used it, is that to dial just a phone number seems to take a bit longer. But, I just tried using the voice dialer and it quickly got much easier. lol
I also wonder if the Accessibility application is the only one you are installing. Should I be installing something else to give me more functionality
Sorry for the long-winded questions but I really can't seem to find other assistance on this.
Thanks,
Jeremy Grandstaff

Hi Jeremy,
I think you will get the best answers to your questions on Google's eyes-free group (I'm not allowed to post outside links on this forum, or I would have given you the URL).
On that list many blind Android phone users report accessibility issues and workarounds, and the list is monitored by Google's Android accessibility developers. Android web accessibility is indeed still very limited, as is text editing support.
Best regards,
Posted my question also to the eyes-free group
Thanks for the reply. I did post my message to the Google eyes-free group, but felt I would get a fuller response here as well.

Slow Dialer, Contacts and phonebook takes more tha 10 secs to load!!!! HELP

Just got my S$ upgraded to the lates version in my country which is 4.2.2 when I click on the dialer icon the screen freezes for 10 secs and it shows the numbers but when you press the numbers notheing happens and I guess when the program completely loads suddenly all the numbers pop up and aside from that whenever I type in a name in the messages or the contacts menu to look up someone to message or call it takes to long to load that my screen turns black and which I need to go back until I get the proper contact to be able to do some action with.... I know how to lenghten the time before it goes into energy saving mode or for screen to turn back but this is the exact problem I was staying away from since opting to get the Iphone 5... Since this has the best hardware as of the moment but to lag and freeze and sometimes even crash the phonebook or message app is ridiculous..... Sure you can do a lot of cool stuff but if it can't do this and the answer to my solution is to wait for an update just for a simple task of calling or messaging someone Samsung really brought out a half baked product. Hope you guys can help me with this because everytime I want to call or text someone I just do it on facebook a nokia 5110 would do better than this as far as calling and messaging.... Have they focused to much on the advanced features that they didn't fix the most basic elements of the phone. I had the HTC sensation, iphone 3 before that then this.. Since I'm into computers and pro open source I opted to stict with the android... but this is really pushing me to switch to Apple (who I hate but is really efficient at doing things its supposed to) or windows 8.
Help me with this problem so I don't give up on androids for my next phone I'd rather have a phone that is working lag free than the latest phone with the best specs that can't even do what it's supposed to do, basically reducing it to a bar of soap....

Hey this isn't an issue with the phone....its a problem with the update....there are a few things you can try out
1. Go to settings and go to application manager in the last tab....scroll to the 4th tab in the app manager...which is All.....and find your contact and contact storage apps.....clear their memory (note this will delete all your contacts....so backup) and retry accessing contacts as usual.
2. Usually the first step helps...if it doesn't... try to do a factory reset of your phone.....(This will delete all your app data....so backup)
3. You could also try to reflash the same firmware or a better update via odin.... Google and XDA are your friends so search the forums....there are many good tutorials.
4. Finally if you still feel like this isnt the answer...i suggest you to root your phone and install a new custom firmware....lots of good tutorials and roms on the XDA forums so check it out. If you dont know about rooting....approach with caution as this will void your warranty....
So try these out...hope it gave you some idea good luck!!
