Have EVO for testing. - EVO 4G General

Dropped my EVO, screen broke, bought a new one. Old one still works, not activated so couldn't test calling features, but still functions fine. If anybody would like me to test anything for them, I'd be willing to do so. I'm laid off with a lot of time on my hands, so whatever, let me know.

My exact intentions bro. Wanna keep the phone for the sake of development, and testing. Anything to make my evo and anyone elses better. Since I don't know how to develop, figured I could contribute this way.

here is something I would like to see..
turn off all radios and auto updates.. anything that makes the evo work when nothing is happening.
charge it to full..
and let it sit till it dies.
how long does it really last?

That will be cool

You must be Balling if you laid off and bought a new EVO full price after ypi broke your new one, wow

Aside of going into airplane mode, everything is turned off, including mobile network.. So far... 18+ hours, battery symbol drained one notch. Usage: 50% Cell Standby, 50% phone idle.

i am assuming it's unrooted. you will for sure get more than 1d 19h. (my previous test result) but i actually used it during the entire weekend for texting +calling

My daughter plugged the phone in, so it reset the battery time. But last I checked it was this morning, 5 days and a few hours battery time with about 25% remaining. Unbelievable... I'm gonna give it a shot again. I'll keep you posted.

UnOffical- Offical Battery Use for the Evo

I will be getting the Evo when it will be coming out and I and probably 100 other people are worried about the battery life of this monster. What we know is this guy has a huge screen, a WiMax radio and a 1 GHz processor that will suck up the battery life crazy. However, HTC has made sure to put in a 1500 mAh battery that is almost as big as the phone. Coming from the Pre this is comforting but I am still kinda skeptical about the battery life if this monster.
So the purpose of this thread is for all of those lucky people who already have a Evo to post there experiences with the life of this superphone. What I need of you is normal daily battery life with 3G and 4G, normal screen brighness, how much you use internet, email check frequency, and anything else you what to mention. This will really help alot of people out here who are potential Evo owners.
Oh, and Thanks in advance!!!!
EDIT to moderators: This maybe a good thread to make a sticky.

This is the beast of a battery I'm planning to get for my future Evo. Can't wait to see what 2000 mAh of juice will do to its durability .

Keep in mind: this battery will add 25-33% to the thickness.
The extra 3 to 4 mm of thickness would make the Evo as thick as the G1 which to me is no problem at all considering my current phone is the G1 WITH an extended battery.

Not much of a problem for me; if anything, it will make the Evo easier to hold in the hand.

Well I live in a 3g area and work in a 4g area. I have a 2 hour drive each way and half way I hit 4g. Right now if I just stay on 3g the battery can last me all day with normal usage. I usually only charge the device while I'm driving home from work so I can listen to my music or podcasts. I'd say on normal usage you get about 12 hours. That's what I get at least. But here's a solution for you. The Evo takes a normal HTC Hero or Touch Pro 2 battery. I bought a TP2 battery on eBay for about $5. Now all I need to do is make sure I keep one charged and the other charged and in my car. Then I can swap if I need to.
Also note that as of now, 4g sucks battery big time. I think this is a bug in the software so once they fix that then we'll be fine. But right now if you leave 4g on permanently you probably only get about 4 hrs. Just a warning.
Thx for the comments so far! My experience with the Pre, which had alot of battery bugs at the start, says that after all the bugs are worked out it will give you 1-3 hours more. So with 4G running 5-6 hours strait is an ok deal. Just the most important thing to me right now is just to have at least 12 hours of usage with a far amount of browsing on 4G at the time.
I previously owned an HD2, which is nearly identical to the EVO 4G except for OS, and thought battery life was pretty good. Got at least a day out of it and I was on it all the time (wifi connection mostly).
this is pretty surprising that people are getting this much out of the battery.
i was figuring maybe four or so hours max. i can't even last a whole day on my droid with low usage, but the fact i dropped it in the toilet could have something to do with it.

Ha ha. Yeah toilets and phones usually don't mix. Unless it's WinMo in which case thats where it belongs
But yeah my battery has been very good to me. Definitely can't complain. On a side note it does take a considerable longer amount of time to charge than the Hero I was using but that only makes sense.
Yesterday I took my Evo to work with me for the first time since receiving it Friday. It had a full charge when I left the house at about 340pm. At about 1030pm, I got the message to connect the phone to the charger. In between that time span, I did some web browsing and sent some text messages (I love the Evo keyboard). I didn't make any calls because I'm still carrying my Palm Pre with me until the 4th when I can get my service switched to my Evo. But anyway the Evo lasted a lot longer than my Palm Pre. It probably would have even lasted longer but I had some programs pulling information every 15mins and some every 2 hours. So I set all them to pull information at longer intervals. So I'm going to see how long it'll take before I get that message again. But so far the battery that came with Evo serves me fine.

What are you doing with a phone in a bathroom? Jerk off material?
As the owner of a Sprint Hero, I was very happy to discover that the battery is interchangeable with my Evo.
When I actually tested out the battery (second day of ownership): I was at 36% remaining after 14 hours of moderate use (auto-backlight, occasional texting, reading emails, installed a few apps, browsing XDA, etc). Some observations: The first 10-15% will drain more quickly than the others, incredibly intense apps like 3D gaming will extremely quickly drain the battery (like 6% in half of an hour), and keep your brightness on 20% or so because auto seems to always keep it very bright.
Yesterday I tried the typical "full discharge" test since people seem to rave about it, and I don't see any harm. I will see how this goes today.

Too bad the automatic assumption with that screen is it won't work well on battery life. Still worth it for that great phone.
not to say that his isnt possible because i think it could be. i would have liked to see the other screen because mine says right now up 108 hours awake time 30 hours.. when u hit battery use it'll say how long it was unplugged for.

From what I have learned, the up time and what not is how long your phone has been up without a restart. Not how long you have had it for a single charge.

my point exactly the next screen when you hit "battery use" is the actual uptime since it has been unplugged .. if that were the case i could be like i just got 108hours of battery life and still going i'll believe it you get 90+ hours since unplugged
So if I turn everything off and put the phone asleep and not use it, it will last 90+ hours?
Am I understanding this right? If so whats the point? My phone isn't much fun or use when its asleep

Just charge the phone, kill all the apps, leave it under the bed and come back in a week. It should work.
Seriously whats the deal of the 90 something hrs?? Go get a car battery and maybe you get a month of non-stopping usage.

Yes you wouldn't want to use these exact settings and not use the phone much to get 90 hrs of battery life, but this is RESEARCH that can help us figure out what settings do or don't help battery life. If he used the phone a bit it might last a day and a half, or 2 days.
Thanks for checking things out, don't let the haters bring you down.

Has nothing to do with people not caring or believing it. Was just the picture you posted as your "proof" was a meaningless one, just as many have mentioned. Example; Look at Danon.Brown's pictures...if we go by what you posted, we see he has 108 plus hours of usage when in he's only been unplugged for seconds. Great you got your 90 plus hours on it...but what about the time actually unplugged and usage the phone has seen? If one does nothing but let the phone sit idle...it's easy to get 2 plus days out of a charge.

Can you post system panel screenshots?
I'm at 19 1/2 hours right now with 30% battery left and I thought that was pretty good (couple hours of robo defense, couple hours of web browsing, a bunch of movie trailers on Flixter, hour or so of music, a bunch of texts and a couple calls from my mom). Getting nearly 93 hours out of this phone just seems a little difficult to believe under normal use. But then again, maybe I just have more work to do.

I can get my phone to idle at an average loss of 2% per hour with wifi and phone radios on. I see this as completely plausible with minimal use and still being able to receive phone calls texts and emails.

How I got 20+ hours of battery

Im able to run my phone for over 20 hours with sync and data on.
How I managed it:
1. Deleted almost every app
2. Flashed 8/25
3. Switched to Launcher Pro
4. Go to CyanogenMod Settings>User Interface> Automatic Backlight> Enable
5. Go to Spare Parts> End Button behavior > Set Go to Sleep
5. Wiped dalvik cache
6. Recharged to full
7. While at 100% charging, wiped battery stats
8. Unplug and let the phone drain to 0% (let it turn off)
9. Recharge and enojoy
If succesfull backup
Im using the stock kerned with NO battery tweak. I tried it but since I didnt see any improvement I took it out. 8/25 is amazingly fast with launcher Pro so I dont see the point in changing anything else to my Hero. Now I only install Apps that I really want or that wont keep my phone awake. I use pure calendar, handcent, beautiful widgets...stuff like that
Now after 10 months of use im really enjoying my HERO. I hope this helps those of you that are trying to improve your battery life.

genius.
they kept auto installing after flashing a new Rom lol
Im no expert but I figured I had to uninstall them before flashing
How I got 70+ hours of battery
1. Used CM6 Nightly
2. Used TweakTool(still in development http://tweaktool.com but it is the same as collin_ph's battery tweak essentially)
3. Used Decad3nce's experimental BFS kernel
4. Left 3g off unless I needed it
5. ????
6. PROFIT
I have 3g on all the time
The best I have pulled on my phone was 32 hours with twenty percent left this was with light to avg use with 3g turned off, unless o needed it....
I was on nightly 8/24 with uncapped kernel #8

Why? You can use an app like JuiceDefender to set it to turn on every 5 or 10 minutes to allow updates and set it to keep 3g on when the screen is on, could save you some battery

Juice defender destroyed my phones battery life, even when I configured it all, it just drained, drained, drained.
Auto brightness is a waste of battery to me, i set it to 30% and forget it.
My phone makes it through the day, thats all I need. About 30% at 10 pm, off the charger at 7am.

Same here. With Juice Defender I was lucky if my charge held through my lunch break at work.
The biggest battery save for me is to turn off 3G until I have to use it. By the time I go to bed I still have 40-50 percent charge on my phone.
Tried juice defender for around 5 hours and didn't work. At 30% said I had 2 more hours left. During the first hour after setup it drained 9%. That's a lot. Uninstalled

strange I've always had good luck with juice defender. Lately though with how well cm6 is on the battery I've been setting juice defender to only shut off 3g when the screens off and turn it on every hour for 5 minutes to update. My batter life is pretty amazing right now.

[strange] battery drain if phone is put beside my bed

just want to share my strange experience here. i had a battery drain issue (about 60 mA) almost everytime I slept. it turned out it only happened when I put my phone beside my bed! you know the gap between the bedding and the wood? that's where I placed my phone. just last night I tried to prove this theory once again by putting my phone there. and just as expected, currentwidget shows 60 mA of battery drain. then I moved my phone to my desk and some minutes later the drain is stable (8 mA). what's probably the cause of this, you think?

Most likley you are masturbating too much and causing too much friction near you bed which is causing a drain in energy from your battery as it will be in your energy field.
You can stop this drain by...
a) wrapping your head in tinfoil
b) wanking less.
Thats obviously just a coincident.
But, here's my theory:
When I have my phone near when trying to sleep, I play some games, browser internet etc (when it's not near, I just sleep), so you might have a lot of apps running, some of the apps are stupid and would cause high battery usage event when you turn phone screen off.
My solution was using autokiller on screen off, so when I turn if off now it would kill all those apps giving me stable long battery usage no matter where you put your phone.

No offense, but I'm pretty sure it's not a coincident, because since I put my phone on the desk the drain doesn't happen anymore. And I've been doing this for some weeks. But last night, out of curiosity I put the phone in the bedside gap again and voila, 60 mA. Maybe there's magnet inside my bed or something?

My guess is that the signal is not as good when placed beside your bed, so the phone uses more battery in order to get a strong enough signal.

I usually get around 60mA when the phone is syncing something, the poor signal might be the key.
Check your mattress and blankets for bedbugs. They are known to love Android, and are probably using your phone while you sleep. If you keep it in WinMo while you sleep, they won't bother with it, as even bedbugs have the sense to stay away from anything Micro$haft

Best guess till now!

HTC Shift Keyboard has the Desire/iPhone Cursor Magnifying

So glad I traded in my Epic today for the Shift. This just topped it off.
Word.
Moved to general
You make a good point OP. I'm curious why you moved from the Epic? I'm actually contemplating going the other way around although I might give the Shift a second chance. It's starting to grow on me so as long as I can get around the battery dying in 4 hours thing.

As a current owner of all 3 sprint 4G phones DONT DO IT dont move to the epic stick to one of the Evo's if the wobbly keyboard of the epic doesnt get you the laggy RFS (which can be corrected now) filesystem will, or lack of official froyo (yea the leak works great but lacks the polish feel) you also have the lack of girth it just feels like its going to break in your hands and the screen isnt quite as bright its vivid but only gets about 75% as bright as the evo.
I have some side by side shots if you would like to see em.
^ It's okay, but thanks for the offer. I played with all 3 in the Sprint store for an hour before making a decision. I'm just having second thoughts, because I'm missing a larger screen, but I'm hoping to get around it.
Ok, I'm not familiar with this feature. What is it?
When you are typing a box, try holding down your finger. You will see a magnified popup either above or below your finger. At this point you can see easier so you can slide the cursor around effortlessly.

Yeah I found that nifty little feature my 2nd day owning the phone. It is so awesome, just another notch on the cool wall for this phone. Gmail still has the old select text feature but I think I can live with that haha.

I nearly returned the phone for the same reason. I did a factory reset, then charged the phone until the light turned green, then unplugged and turned the phone off and recharged until the light turned green, then unplugged till the light turned off and then plugged in again until the light turned green.
It took about an hour each time, but now my battery is working great. I am only adding one app each cycle and will watch my battery usage.
Got 13:41 on my last charge! Give it a try.

There must have been something wrong with your setup. I'm 36 hours without a charge and at 30% battery left. I'm not doing anything different than I ever have. I've never had an android phone last this long not even my Optimus S which I thought was the best on battery.
I'm guessing you had something running at 100% cpu in the backround. I noticed I had a download hang up in the market and that killed my phone in a few short hours the first day I got it. I didnt know it was stuck trying to download until the next time I went into the market.

This is a very handy feature...good looking out.
i think the battery life is great, i'm getting between 13 and 15 hours a day and the battery is still at 35% when i plug it in.
i have Sync set to one hour: 2 gmail accounts, facebook and weather.
WiFi is always turned on (and connected about 80% of the time)
Bluetooth is always on and connected to my headset
4G is off (don't live in a 4G market)
GPS is off (turned it off to test 3G speeds and never turned it back on, i don't think it does much in th way of impacting battery life)
and my brightness is set to Auto.
i'm sure i could get more life out of it but i can't justify turning off all the phones features to do so.
this thing is night and day better than my Evo when it comes to battery life, i bought the Seidio 3500mah battery for my Evo and it only gets about 19 hours on a good day, stock battery i was lucky to get 8 hours.
haha funny thing though, i have my Evo on me for testing roms and such, i'm at 40 hours and it's at 27% on the extended battery, thats with everything but WiFi turned off and i hardly touch it during the day.

Happy to report my battery woes are over! I was getting 4-6 hours out of the box, but then yesterday I did a hard reset with PRL+Profile update and that seemed to have done it! I will try power cycling it as suggested to help even more!
