Difficulties Rooting On Vodafone 32B Handset - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hey There,
I have been researching this topic for quite a while and i'm a bit frustrated at this point. I have come across a pile of threads on this website about information to root/put new roms on the HTC magic.
Here's the handset details before I go into anything else
Sapphire Unknown 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT 1.33.007 (SAPP100000)
CPLD-10
I'm in version 1.6 and i understand that you must downgrade to 1.5 before rooting. I followed a simple tut to downgrade it that entailed putting the sappimg onto the SD card and doing an update.
Whilst Doing this it gives me an error saying it can't find anything but when i look closely it is looking for files called "sappdiag" not sappimg
Please provided what I should do it'd be greatly appreciated
I'm very confused as this is meant to work to downgrade to cupcake...
Cheers

Hi mate,
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Magic_(32B)
Read this through to the letter, and you should be just fine

There is nothing on that page

If this is a stock Vodafone UK Magic with Google branding then you shouldn't have to downgrade, nor mess about with SPLs, goldcards or anything.
The link supplied in the previous post doesn't include the final ')' character, I can't post the correct link because the forum rules prevent me from posting external links. If you have any further trouble go to the Cyanogen wiki and have a good dig around.

Just get universal androot out the market and root, rom manager to flash a recovery and your done

Rooting a Vodafone branded HTC Magic (europe)

Totally n00b at this....
I have a Vodafone Branded HTC Magic,
i live in the Netherlands...(europe)
It has the fastboot-option described here (3 skateboarding droids):
(link removed due to being a new user, grrr)
I also looked at the directions given at unlockr.com (link removed due to being a new user, grrr)
I am in doubt to root my device (warranty-void & not keen bricking my device.)
Questions i have:
1.Can i backup/restore my current/original state (android 1.6) prior to doing anything?
2.How to root safely with the right method for my specific version? (non tmobile and tips at unlockr.com seem to be for everything but vodafone branded version)
3.If i eventually succeed in rooting, how do i pick the RIGHT rom for me? I've read a lot of info on this and other fora, but i cannot seem to find the right rom for me, nor to determine how to find it out...
Any tip/help is highly appreciated...
Thnx
I'm new to the forum and I am in the same situation as you but with a 32B motherboard Vodaphone Australian version.
I have read the same information as you from unlockr.com and other post in here but still haven't been able to do it.
I also tried eclipse and SDK tools but i must be doing something wrong because I haven't succeed. I can't get my Mac to see my device using the command 'adb devices'
If any one in here could help please?

Can u tell me a way to root it? Plz carefully step by step...I'm newbie at here, I try many ways but still cant root it.... I've just moved from Symbian to Android....
Thanks in advance.....

Read this page.
Look at section marked "Non-TMobile 32B Magics".
Thnx !
This will answer this Question:
2.How to root safely with the right method for my specific version? (non tmobile and tips at unlockr.com seem to be for everything but vodafone branded version)

If you read through it says that once you have Amon_RA's recovery installed to "Make a nandroid backup of your current state so you can easily restore to an unrooted state". Nandroid is within the Backup/Restore menu.

Go for Cyanogen's to begin with because it is easy.
Once you are used to Amon_RA's recovery you can take a nandroid copy to your SD card, do a full wipe and then try another. If you don't like it or it does not run do a nandroid restore.
With a UK Magic (32B) it is safer to look at the ROM's here.

Need help on Rooting and Upgrading Rom: SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H HBOOT-1.76 0007

Hi,
Sorry for being a Noob, I have read the Wiki on Ultimate Guide to Hacking your Sapphire Handset and attempted to try to fastboot using RA-sapphire-v1.6.2 but did not manage to get to the screen as shown you thread.
These are the details of my phone and it is bought in Singapore and I recently upgraded to Sense UI. I have seen a couple of threads with others suggesting to create a gold card and others dont need to hence I am a bit confused here.
Is there a thread out there to teach me step by step how to root and upgrade my Rom.
Can you teach me as I have been looking at this forum for a couple of weeks and couldn't find a step by step but and many users seems to experience different problems when hacking it. Seeing my colleague hack his Nexus One I really envy and will like to hack mine as well.
Please help
Thank you in advance

Are you running 1.5 (cupcake) or 1.6 (donut)? You can't push a custom recovery until you downgrade to 1.5. From there you can install flashrec.apk and flash a new recovery. Once you have your new recovery, flash your rom of choice through the recovery.
If you're currently running 1.6, in order to downgrade, you need to find the appropriate SAPPimg.nbh/zip with a non perfected SPL. I believe the SPL you currently have is a perfected SPL which will prevent you from rooting with the one click method. More than likely, you will have to root via the goldcard method, which will require an additional sd card. Preferably a 2 gb kingston micro sd with an adapter to connect to your computer. You can find detailed instructions at the link below. Just read carefully, its really not very complicated if you just follow the instructions step by step and do a little research.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/14/how-to-root-your-mytouch-3g/
since he don't know how ROOT his phone and he said that upgraded to Sense then it is only logic that he did offical RUU 1.5 SenseUI 1.76 PerfectSPL = no love.
Hi Sombionix and dk75,
I am using 1.5 (cupcake), I did some hunting on myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development forum and there were some threads posted but none of them mention anything about successfully rooting phones with HBOOT -1.76 0007 and successfully installing a new rom.
Is this true that it is not possible? Has anyone done it successfully ?
Please help
Thank you
is there a way to downgrade the Sense UI back to the original Rom shipped/stock version then Root and install a new Rom

give us more information about your radio?,spl, and if do you have app2sd or not .
if do ya have the old radio see this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394.

5. yes i have app2sd
Go to the G1 section
Mate go to the G1 section for info, the hardware is the same as your 32B and you will find it much more relevant - any ROM built for a G1 (and there are way more than for the 32A like you find here) willl work on the 32B and there are great how-to's in the development section that you can follow to flash whatever rom you desire!!
Hope that helped...

XDA Sapphire Hacking Wiki now available

I've just finished putting the last touches on the Sapphire Hacking Wiki available at:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
I urge any new users to read it to help them get started.
I urge any advanced users to read it and help us keep it up to date!
This is a generic Hacking guide for any Sapphire handset - ie. HTC Magic, Vodafone Magic, Rogers HTC Magic, Google ION, even the TMobile MyTouch 3G.
If a moderator could sticky this it would be appreciated.
Looks great man, thanks so much for your hard work =D
+1 Sticky
Hey Radix,
Fantastic effort! I really wish this had been available a few weeks ago when I first got my handset and was trawling through hundreds of posts for info. This should definatly be made a sticky at the very very top...
Cheers
Ben
Yeah, this was partially why I wrote it - everything was so scattered knowledgewise and I kept seeing people flashing roms with no clue and wondering why it wouldn't boot, etc.
My blogs have had quite a few followers and people commenting that this is what they needed, so thought I'd try and braindump everything that I'd learnt over the last month and a half into the wiki and try and put it into some kind of order
Nice one, thread stuck
Dave
Already added some stuff a couple of days ago
Great work
Excellent work
Now if someone is kind enough to write about swap and how to use it .
I wish I read your ultimate guide first before buy my 'Perfected SPL' Magic hahaha..
Excelent work, thanks !!
.dhy
this is professional work.
thanks a lot for sharing.. really...
In section 8.4 I think its have to be
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Sorry for my english
Hi,
Please add http://jimcortez.com/blog/?p=37 to the USB tethering. No root require.
i tried with both ION rom and Hero rom on Vodafone magic Aus
Thanks for both of your suggestions - I've made the changes you've both suggested.
Unfortunately I've had to split the wiki into two pages due to issues with the xda wiki server and it's maximum file upload limit. I've reported it, but meh - splitting it is easier for now.
I would like to point out that if you see something in the wiki that is wrong - simply edit it yourself - that's the whole point of a Wiki!
There's an edit link at the bottom of the page and your existing xda-forums account gives you permission to edit it.
The more people with specific domain knowledge we have editing it, the better it will be.
Thanks a lot. Excelent work.
for section6, How to Restore a Nandroid Backup - how to recover from a bad rom install
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking_2#sec06
I have tried the latest Recovery image by Amon_RA which you can find here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
and the Nandroid v2.1.1 restore function does not need a security-off SPL.
I can backup/restore smoothly by boot to recovery mode and simply choose the appropriate option without flash my SPL.

hi
i am a new magic learner, just read your wiki, many thanks for your hard work.
i found if there had a mistake about :"Perfect" SPL Revisions (that prevent us hacking)
Currently HBOOT-1.33.2006 and HBOOT-1.33.0010 are the known 'Perfect SPL' revisions on the Sapphire handsets that we know of.
in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019,Haykuro quote : "T-Mobile myTouch : 1.33.0006 and 1.33.0010 is the dreaded "perfected" SPL".
This means that it's currently not possible to run "fastboot boot image" on these SPL's, so don't try to flash them.
I just got the magic SPL:1.33.0006 (SAPP20000)
Could u tell me which should be the right one.
If my magic could flash a new rom?
many thanks
BOTH 1.33.0006 AND 1.33.0010 are perfect SPL, so you can't flash them yet.
I thought it is hacking wifi
Good info for noob like me.

I found the wiki had been revised.
Nice wiki / guide, helped me out when I thought I'd bricked my phone
Could do with a matrix of roms / features though so people know which roms have which features.
Just a simple table with features across the top (HTC keyboard / multitouch / exchange support / working wifi etc etc ) and roms down the side... just a suggestion anyway.
Good work

[Q] UPDATE: Changing from Voda to MT3G... did I brick my device?

Hello.
I have searched MANY many threads (Google, Cyanogen... here) and I am resorting to anyone who can help. Here is my dilemma:
* I have an original MT3G 32B USB device (not the Fender)
* In prepping for OTA 2.2 update, I unrooted and flashed back to what I thought was MT3G 1.6. Instead, it would appear the SPL is Voda based on the following stats:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON H

I literally have tried everything (flashing different SPLs to update fail errors, used adb to load files to card/rooted/tried to use ClockworkMod/Amon_Ra recovery...in short, just about everything).
The Voda surprisingly works, but it is now an HTC Magic with a 1.5 with no ability to do OTA updates. I am just trying to get back to the T-Mobile stuff so I can do the 2.2 update per instructions in this forum.
Can anybody help guide me as to what I am doing wrong or what to do right? I will even contribute a decent amount via PayPal for a solution that works... if it is against forum rules, mods, I apologize. I don't have anything against Voda... it's just that I goofed and am trying to get some much-needed help from anyone.
In advance, thanks and until a reply...
The journey takes a screeching halt while this weary traveler holds up a "HELP ME" sign.
UPDATE: I think I have officially bricked my device. I downgraded my HBOOT to 1.33.0004 or 5 and downgraded my radio to 2.22.23.02. I allowed it to flash and it restarted to the Voda logo and stood there... unable to go to SPL/fastboot/ClockwordMod. Is this an official brick?
This doesn't really have anything to do with Development.
Moving to General.
