[Q] Problems making a 'Tasker' profile launch/activate? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Decided to try this app out due to reports of it being able to help battery life in android by controlling various functions of the hd2.
I'm trying out a simple test profile as described on a link I found via google, which is simply to enable wifi when the browser is launched.
I've set up the profile, the contexts and actions but cannot get them to work and I'm not sure why.
For instance, when I press the test button on the tasks screen, I get a message appearing to say "Wifi on" as intended, a vibrate, and when I later check in wifi settings it says it's scanning for a network so has clearly been enabled. That's great, but then when I click on Apply and close the Tasker app, nothing happens when I launch my browser.
Likewise I set one up just as a test for bluetooth, a message, and a vibrate to come on when I launch the camera. Again, when I press 'Test' on the action screen for this profile it all works fine, but when I try it for real by opening the camera app, nothing happens.
I'm assuming I've missed out one obvious step somewhere but for the life of me I can't see what, even though it must be staring right at me. I've set a message up as the first action in both cases so it's not just that they can't connect to wifi/bt etc.
Can someone help point me at what I'm doing wrong, or haven't done please? I hope this is in the right sub forum as well - apologies if not.
Many thanks

Are you talking about WM? If yes, you are in the wrong sub forum

Probably best to post the profile, the contexts and actions.
Tasker runs just fine on my HD2, so I'm guessing there is a problem with the script.

No it's Android, don't even know if there is a wm version!
KPN - Can I just export the scripts or something? Can't see a setting for that (sorry!) just an import option for profiles. Or do I need to install some screen grab app and just show the screens?
I just know this is going to turn out embarrassing when I get the solution!
I've tried a few different profiles now though, even one that does nothing except pop a message up when I open a browser. Same thing - works fine when I press the test button on the tasks screen, but does nothing outside the app itself.

KPN is my network provider
as described on a link I found via google

maybe post the link?

otaku888 - Sorry, I was distracted by my mrs while I wrote that! Duh.
The first one I tried was via a link to the Tasker website where it describes the following:
Example Profile
Contexts:
(Application) Browser
(Time) 9:00 - 17:00
Enter Task:
(Setting) WiFi On
Flash: "Happy Browsing"
Exit Task:
Flash "Goodbye"
When the application Browser is started betweeen 9:00 and 17:00 WiFi is automatically enabled and "Happy Browsing" flashes up briefly.

Now I tried that, and have since tried even simpler ones but no joy other than with the test button.
I see I can download ready made profiles from the app itself, so I might get and test one to see if A) they work for me and B) they can highlight what is wrong with my ones.
Cheers!

All sorted now, thanks for the assistance.

Strange phenomenons with Cruise

Just bought the Cruise. Generally very happy with it. But, there are a few wierd things. Let me describe some of them:
1. When I'm in the Home tab and want to go to the Weather tab to check the situation it automatically wants download even if I've just done one a minute before. I can go into it six times in one minute and it will start to download each time. Normal?
2. When my Cruise has not been in use for some time, five minutes to half an hour and I want to use the phone I switch it on and find myself in a programme. It could be contacts or a third party programme that I have installed. To use the phone I have to exit the open programmes first. Normal?
3. I sometimes go into the Comm Manager and find that the Data Connection is on (for no reason). I'm getting a bit paranoid imagining that my phone bill is going to be high because of these situations. Normal?
Or is it just me?
Thanks
Brian
I have never noticed such the behavior, haven't read that anyone there in xda-dev board has noticed things like this. If you still have an original rom I would recommend you to do hard reset and to try to use your device without to install anything for some days to check how it will behave.
i would really recommend a hard reset. if u call them thats exactly what they gonna tell u
If this would be a pc I would think about some sort of trojan has got control over it.
Spamkit: There are NO trojans for Win Mobile. HTC Weather has a timeout of 2 Hours. Maybe O2 did something to the plugin to make it download more often and generate bills

Brian, what you need just to click on your prefferable city on Weather Tab, then go to Menu-Weather Options-remove tick on "Download weather data automatically"
Click to collapse
Try to disable "Download weather data automatically". It can be the cause of data connection activate so you can solve 2 problems at same time.
To do it, tap on your city in HTCHome; in next windows you should have a menu (Bottom right). In Menu Option and remove (by tapping it) flag near the voice Download Data Automatically.
So, you can decide when download data manually tapping the apposite function in HTCHome -weather main page.

As described, turn off auto-update. If turned on and you went over 2h with the last update, the Cruise tries to update every time you switch to the tab, unless you let it update. Then it'll try next in 2h.
I switch it on and find myself in a programme

Do you lock the phone or just turn it off? Sounds like you inadvertedly start programs in your pocket when the Phone wakes up for some reason. I'd recommend to lock the screen before you turn off your phone. If you are unhappy with the built in lock, install S2U2 which is superior to the WinMo built in lock and will keep your phone locked unless you willingly unlock it. It's available here in the forums.

This is in fact disturbing, I agree. Reason is probably the Weather Tab which tries to update in the background or do you use Push-Email or set Outlook to automatically check after a given amount of time? If all that doesnt matter to you and you just want the connection to be dead unless you want it to connect: try MoDaCo NoData. A handy tool which allows you to selectively disable and enable GPRS/3G-Connections. I attached it to this post.

This reads like it is a trojan. But it's all bull: there is no silent or unattended installation possible on Windows Mobile. You'll always see the progressbar, and most probably you'd have to select where to install it to. What it does is turn the "Are you really...?"-screen off. So if you catch/caught it: it's your own fault...

Schaggo and all of you- Thanks for your amazing input. I have returned from being out there and I'll update what I've done.
1. Switched off the auto weather.
2. Set up the Mo Da Co programme and toggled off all possible access via my Service Provider. (I'll have to toggle off the service after I've used it, right?)
3. I do use Push-eMail, but I generally go into the Comm manager and switch off the Push-eMail service manually.
4. The only thing I'm not usre about is the setting of Outlook to automatically check for emails. Where does one switch it on to "manual"?
The business with locking: Is it a good thing? Since I have not tried it, how does it work? Once you have locked the phone and someone calls: Do you have to unlock before answering?
By the way, the stuff about the "Trojan" is BS, I think. So I'll stop there.
Thanks a lot for the help. I'll check it and get back to you with feedback.
Brian
Go into your mail and choose tools/options, choose the account in question and select send/recieve schedule. There you can set to manual.

Push-eMail means "as item arrives" setting in ActiveSync/Menu/Schedule. You can also specify Every .... minutes or Manually. Last one is connecting only when you start Send/Receive in Pocket Outlook.
S2U2 is great. Try it. It has Slide to Unlock feature and allows to answer calls same way. It's fully configurable to your needs and easy to uninstall if you don't like it. Had same problems and S2U2 helped.

No Data????

Alright, I have been trying to get Modaco's Nodata CAB to work on my Wizard, but everytime I try it, it just gives me an error and doesn't work (it installs fine, but it won't work).
So, I'm looking for a fix... I don't have a data plan, and all I want to use the phone for are calls, SMS, and Wifi... anyone know a sure fire way to disable the data connection? (other than calling my provider)
Also, I posted this in another thread, but would the Comm Manager in my ROM work to disable data connections? It currently says that data connections are "off"... but I don't want to take the chance of it automatically turning on. But if the Comm Manager is actually capable of keeping the data connection off, then that should work for me, right? (the ROM that I am using is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395173)
Thanks, and let me know if I need to provide more info or whatever. I just really need to try to avoid those kind of extra charges if I can.
You should just be able to put your phone in flight mode from your today screen with two taps. Tap your signal strength icon and then tap "Turn on flight mode."
As far as NoData is concerned: Is there anything else you've installed that might have similar functionality which could be conflicting with NoData? Also, the ROM you flashed is pretty bare. Are you sure your symptoms aren't from that ROM? I'd ask on that guy's thread, if I were you...
The only other thing I'd suggest is turning off automatic email downloads, and anything else you've installed that updates itself automatically (weather programs are NOTORIOUS for this, but any program is a potential suspect, so check them all). Just the email download is hitting the network a minimum of once every 60 minutes. Even without getting email, that's close to 2MB per month. That can add up to some hefty bill, especially while roaming.

Thanks for your reply. The Comm Manager has a button to turn on/off flight mode, so I should be able to do that pretty easily (I can reach the COMM Manager in 2 taps as well). It also has one to turn on/off Wifi, Bluetooth, Cellular Radio, and Data Connection (maybe one more, but I can't remember it at the moment... my Wizard is at home). My question concerning the Comm Manager is whether or not keeping the Data Connection setting "off" will act as a "disabler" (meaning, if I keep it off, it won't come on automatically or anything at any time unless I turn it on). If it truly does work like that all the time, then I should be set... I just don't know if it does or not.
The ROM is pretty bare, but I don't think I've downloaded anything that would conflict with NoData. The only CAB files I've put on there are SPB Mobile Shell 2.1, PCM Keyboard, TCPMP Player, Total Commander, and BatteryStatus. I know Mobile Shell has the Weather program, but so far it has only updated itself when I have synced it to my PC. I haven't set up my email yet, but I would definitely turn off automatic email downloads no matter what.
So basically, it all kind of depends on whether the "Data Connection" tab in my Comm Manager is capable of actually stopping my phone from connecting to the data network when I have it set to off. Or if there's a way to fix the NoData CAB, then that should work too. But if anyone knows any other options/solutions (again, other than calling AT&T and having them block all data... which I can do, but I'd rather just do it myself), please let me know.
It should work. I can't speak to the specifics of your ROM, so if it doesn't work, you'll have to take that up with the cook, not me.
You can easily test this, though. In the comm manager, turn off the phone radio. Then try to open your web browser, and surf to something (it caches the home page, so that's going to show up anyways...). If you get out, then the phone is accessing the network after you "turned it off."
Also did you see the note from the developer's post on MoDaCo.com?
Note that if you get bizarre registry errors on toggling, you need to app unlock your device (e.g. with SDA Application Unlocker).

Yeah, I guess I just skimmed over that note at Modaco.com... but anyway, I tried it (using the SDA Application Unlock tool, which worked successfully) to no avail. The same error came up while trying to run the NoData CAB (I reinstalled it). The error reads:

I still haven't tried your suggestion with the Comm Manager yet (kind of waiting for a response in that other thread first)... but it looks like the NoData CAB isn't going to work unless someone knows how to fix whatever the error message is saying.

Since I don't think NoData is being actively developed any more, you're probably SOL for a repair/update from them...
Try this: delete both NoData and the App Unlocker. Install the App Unlocker again, then install NoData. The installation may have been fouled by the Wizard because app loading wasn't unlocked at the time.
you ALWAYS get error, when GPRS/etc settings are not SET.
this program is A MUST, and it is working FINE.
I think what nothin is trying to say in his (her?) exceptionally charming way, is that if you had done a Google search for your error and clicked on the very first link, some reading would reveal your problem.
While it could have been done without the e-screaming, nothin does have a point about doing a thorough search for solutions before posting.
Haha, it's fine, I probably need to have some sense knocked in to me once in a while. Thanks for all of your help though... I guess I just don't need the NoData CAB to avoid data plan charges. At least that is what it is looking like. But thanks again. And this thread can be closed or whatever.

What do you want? (Developing Silverlight App)

It looks like the future of applications for Windows Mobile is leaning towards silverlight 2. So My goal for this summer is to create a good, fun or useful application using silver light. I just need some ideas. What do you guys want?
One app I've been looking for for years. Some apps have some functionality but nothing puts it together in a simple package.
Location Aware Reminders
set up points on a map where a reminder of user defined text would pop up when the device is within a specified distance from that point.
Case #1:
I get off of my freeway exit going home, pass the stoplight before the store, my device plays a recording "DUDE! PICK UP SOME MILK!".
Case #2:
I drive away from my house on a vacation, my device plays a recording "Did you remember to pack your underwear?"
User should be able to:
1. View a map with current location based on gps.
2. Move map to different locations.
3. Define and save a point on the map.
4. Define a distance from that point where reminder would fire.
5. Define the text of a reminder.
6. Define an audio file as a reminder.
7. Define a title for reminder
8. View list of reminders
9. When reminder fires there should be a Snooze and Delete Option.
10. Reminders should have a date/time window of when to fire.
10 ex. All Days, only between 4pm and 7pm.
10 ex. On May 25th. any time.
Yes, there are apps that "sort of" do this. But they are unuseable for this use.
Keeping the functionality simple and specific will ensure EASE OF USE and actual functionality.
I will GLADLY pay you $10 for this app.

Would it use GPS or the GSM/3G Network to determine location? Also what navigation software would this use for the maps? This is a good idea however this seems very intermediate. More ideas people.
I'd like this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426089
I would hope it would use the internal GPS.
I like the voice mail thing Like the iPhones right?
It would be nice if my wife could easily make entries via a website or a client on her desktop. (maybe not).
Actually, it would be kinda interesting. Driving down the street and having the app pop up something my friend put in there.
So you could have a group, and allow people to post GPS Pop Ups to your app.
"This is where I proposed to my wife".
"Don't even bother coming to the game tonight sucka cuz you're goin' down".
That would be kinda fun.
Just thinking out loud.

This is a great Idea. Only problem it is not even close to easy and I have no gps experience. But i might assemble a team to create this.
An XDA-Developers forum program that tracks your threads and alerts you when there's a new post, etc. Something that would be cooler than the actual site, and if you could, make it for our phones too.
This is very easy to answer:
1) To the date there isn't a SINGLE mobile e-mail client on the market, which is SIMPLE and FINGER FRIENDLY. In fact, there isn't any finger friendly e-mail clients at all. I think hords of users would welcome this kind of app.
2) Also there still isn't an on-demand connection chooser - look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408243
Thank You.

@ Sean D:
About #2. You remember back in the dial-up days when You started Internet Explorer it had an option whether to ask the connection to use or not? Well, I think for PPC and the apps that need internet connection this would be the ideal solution - if You start PIE for example, the system will ask You whether You'd like to use WiFi or GPRS or whatever else connections You have and You'd just check the option that suites You the most at the given location. If You're in a cafe with free WiFi You'd choose to use WiFi, if You're in the woods You'd choose GPRS (or 3G or whatever similar). Instead of manually connecting to desired network before launching browser. I hope You get the idea...
G-profile is not asking You how to connect, it just manages Your connections with profiles for different occasions. You'd still have to manually choose a profile with the desired connections before launching a browser.
Ha!

The whole point of this thread is that since it's pretty much confirmed there will be a silverlight or some type of WPF subset for WinMo, applications can be designed so that when devices do release, some changes can be made (e.g. support for accelerometer) so that the program can be released from the get-go.
It's also to provide devs with some practice with WPF/Silverlight

HTC Home Weather Not Updating

Just got my Dash 3G, and I have found my first issue. The builtin HTC Home Weather app isn't updating. I have it checked to automatically update, but it doesn't. I have also tried doing a manual refresh, and still no luck. The only time it does seem to update is if I change my Homescreen, and it reloads. Anyone one having a similar experience? Any solutions?
thats a common issue with T-Mobile for years.
theres a few threads already constructed with possible solutions dating back to 2007.
just go thru the search function, see what comes up, theres way too many for me to post.
Later!
I had searched, but most of the posts were for other phones/OS's (6.0 instead of 6.1). Plus, I am not sure if the HTC Home Weather has changed since these other fixes were posted. I don't want to be mashing old fixes into my new phone unless I can be assured it will work. Probably means I will have to wait for someone else to be the guinea pig. Can anyone point to a fix they have confirmed to work?
Just restart phone and notice that it reloads. Myfaves automatically reloads no matter what homescreen you choose.. Have vista need to stop the sync
The problem is with connecting to the network, Mine refused to update until I changed my connection to always on, now it works perfectly. All you need to do is edit the reg:
This wont drain your battery as this is only a GSM network state flag and nothing is transferred, all it does is eliminate the connection wait time.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\
{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\
Connections\*your connection name*\AlwaysOn = 1
There will be two *your connection name* to look for, one is Data the other Internet
Bupahs,
Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion, but still no luck. I am now having issues trying to get the initial update. (Had to do a hard reset). I've been looking at the registry entries at:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\SlidingPanel\HTCWeather
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Chome\HTCWeather
but I don't know what to edit to try, and fix the issue. I've changed the State and Status values at HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather. These seem to control which message the app displays such as "Add City", or "Unable to download..", etc. I've noticed the WeatherApp.exe process isn't running in the background by default, and that the value of the key HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Settings\UpdateCmd\ seems to be a date followed by a time. (2009,7,19,12,21,43) Any suggestions on what else to look at? Do apps referenced in the Registry default to the Windows directory? I noticed CommandLaunch references WeatherApp.exe, but I get no action when I hit refresh. Just wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Do others have this working? Sorry for the rambling post. Useful input or suggestions are welcomed.
mine wont update either tried 3 different networks.

T-Mobile Device Tune-up Beta

Hey guys, T-Mobile is implementing a new program with their My Device program for Android devices called Device Tune-up, in beta form. From reading everything, I guess it's essentially another task-killer. I'm going to give it a shot. Anybody else willing to try?
From T-Mo:
Background:
T-Mobile is continually looking for ways to bring new innovation to our customers. Within the My Account application, we are adding new functionality in the My Device section called Device Tune-up. Device Tune-up is built to run in the background at all times and ‘tune-up’ the device by closing unused services that are running.
Device Tune-up is different from most task killers because it does not require you to do anything. Device Tune-up will default to 'on'. While on, Device Tune-up proactively closes services to help the device and battery perform at their best. Most pre-loaded applications will not be affected by Device Tune-up. For our non-technical users, this may mean you never even realize Device Tune-up is running; your device may simply run better.

I installed as soon as I saw them tweet it, and I must say I'm pretty impressed, it works very well. More people should try it though, I would like to see what others think of it.

how can i run this in a non TM devices?and also not a t-mobile user........?
I downloaded this, but it does not allow you to turn off pre-installed apps. That's a major loss and pretty much renders the thing useless. Advanced Task Killer works much better in this department.
I'm going to give it a shot and see if it works okay. I don't use a lot of the apps that are req to stay on and not kill so it may work great for me. I'll see in a day or two.
That's weird I installed it but I don't see the device tune up part anywhere and I'm not on wifi. Also I read this on the download page:
If, after installing the beta, you do not see Device Tune-up on the Quick Tools menu, it means that your device was placed into a control group experience. To opt out of the control group experience and be able to see Device Tune-up, long click on the Phone Info line under Quick Tools tab and choose to ‘opt-out’ of the control group. You will then see Device Tune-up.
I followed the instructions and I long press on the phone info part under quick tools and nothing happens or I don't get any option to opt-out. Anyone else having this issue? Does this app work on nexus one running froyo?

What do you mean? I installed apk manager and all it does is show me all my apps installed. And I do see the myaccount app in installed but there's nothing else to do....did I miss a step?...... Thanks
I got it and installed it through the apk manager as you stated and installed the app but it still doesn't show device tune up or holding long pressing the phone info doesn't give me the option to opt-out....
after you install it open up my device go to quick tools and press and hold on phone info then you get a pop up asking about the control group thing
Yeah I've tried this like 100 times today, nothing happens I hold "phone info" it highlights green I hold it nothings pop ups asking me to opt out. I've installed and reinstalled the app through the apk manager and without it and it just isn't working. I have nexus one running froyo (latest update) am I missing something????
Its for 2.1 devices only

Ah....well then there you go. Thanks
This app is so completely pointless. Except for the percentage meter, which I am testing to see if I get battery battery life with no percentage widget running. I don't like the 1-10 scale the settings menu has.
This is basically how it works for me. Since I know how to end programs using the back button method , I go to my "My device beta", go to end tasks, and every task I would like to kill says "cannot kill pre-installed app".
Facebook, twitter, all sorts of dumb S*** has to be left running. Personally I hate the mail app because it lags and the gmail app is better, so I would like to close mail along with FB and many others. Would it be so terrible if T-mobile made these things optional.
Any one agree/disagree? care to argue?
I agree that this is useless. I have tried it for a few days now and it has done nothing. I still (out of habbit) go and click my task killer and it constantly is still killing apps that this beta is missing. I purposely opened some and let them run in the background for several hours unused and it still did not kill them and they were not stock apps so it should kill them just fine. Anyway, I still use my task killer to save battery so nothing has changed except I lost a few min of my life tinkering with this. Not worth the time.
I've gotten about 2 extra hours (from 10 to 12 hours) of battery life after installing this. There are plenty of articles explaining how advanced task killer is actually a battery drain, and is really only used by people with a microsoft windows mindset. TMOs app runs a bit differently and actually kills tasks that are running in the background, not just holding memory (I'm not going to explain the differnce, as its been done 100x already).
I give the app a good rating.
