[Q] Samsung Focus on other carriers unbranded?. - Focus General

Been looking around and I can't find any information if the Focus will be available unbranded. I live in Australia on the Telstra network who uses the same band as AT&T (850 MHz) so compatibility is not an issue.

According to Paul Thurrott in his Windows Weekly podcast this is the one to have. Amazing screen, amazingly thin and light and has expandable storage.
Now, where can us folk in the UK get hold of this handset from unlocked?

Scott Whitmore,
I would trade you a Focus for a Omnia 7. I live in the US but don't like how the focus look and would like to get the Omnia 7 instead.

Sorry, the Omnia is not available on my network. I'm thinking of just getting a Mozart and then selling it when the HD7 comes out. I've looked around and I can't find the Focus unbranded. I don't want a branded model.

Hey,
I found a site that is selling the phone unlocked in the US. I'm looking to get ether a Mozart or a Omnia 7.

I wouldn't trust this site, I've found numerous people complaining of scams that have occurred.
Anyone else know if this phone will be available unlocked for purchase?

I'm wondering if you can just buy it at full price and ask for unlock code

plenty of users on xda-developers have bought phones off negri electronics and have been very happy with the service.

I think the issue with these sellers is that there is no after sales service. In most cases you don't need one. Samsung has good QA and I have been satisfied with most of their products. But if you are unfortunate and need to exchange or return the phone, you might be out of luck.

I've ordered a number of things from Negri and never had any issues. They have always shipped fast AND they actually care about their customers. I'm curious where you saw they were a scam from?
The two things I really like about Negri is they aren't afraid to tell you straight, there is no BS with them. Also they just passed along savings on shipping to everyone because they were able to negotiate a better deal with this shipping company. How many companies can you say will do that for their customer.

I would order from them
I haven't ordered anything from Negri Electronics but, I have heard a lot of good things about them. You are definitely ordering from real people, that much I know. From what I've seen they answer loads of questions quickly on Twitter. I am getting a new phone soon and I will definitely be ordering from them.

You can easily buy an unlocked Focus from ebay (as I did) or even Amazon. Most likely it will be the AT&T version since it's the most widespread. I hated the ATT ROM and so downloaded the Rogers Canada version of the ROM from this website - which is much cleaner - and flashed my Focus.
Voila. My phone was still unlocked, no horrible ATT stuff making my Focus slow, no tacky orange ATT intro. Also, I was able to update through Zune to 8107, the latest available build (ATT blocks updates after 7720).
If you want a focus and are worried about branded phones, this might be a useful process for you like it was for me.

Telus HTC Hero, can it be unlocked

Can the Telus HTC Hero be unlocked, without having any telus sim or being activated on telus in any way at all? I'm on Bell but want an android device. Was thinking of buying it, unlocking it, and throwing in a Bell sim.
unlock?
I am looking for the same answer, it should be able to get unlocked question is has anyone don it yet.
Unlocked and android 2
Better yet lets see it unlocked and android 2 installed!
There is a guy on eBay selling unlock code for the Telus Hero (try searching "telus hero"). If you are willing to shell out 25 bucks, you may want to try that. He said that he would refund you if his code didn't work.
Telus does not lock the phone, that's what the CSR told me. Pretty much u can put in any sim card to make it work.

That's really good news for us AT&T guys!!! I just need to buy one now, from what I hear Telus will not ship to the USA.
So far, actually buying one is the biggest issue. There's been discussion both here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=580418
and on some other forums, such as:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=1585687
About buying it. Apparently both Best Buy and Walmart in Canada have them, but only sell them in the store and won't ship them. (Best Buy's is on their website, but Walmart's doesn't seem to be).
I'm an AT&T subscriber that's been keeping an eye out for a way to buy a Telus HTC Hero. If I lived close to Canada, I'd drive up and get one, but I live in Georgia, so it's a bit far. I hope somebody finds a place online or something.
I'd be careful about believing the Telus CSR info that the phone is unlocked. Somebody posted on Boy Genius Report that they bought one and the phone IS locked.
See user "k386" comment here:

I just bought a Telus Hero from Best Buy today, and I can tell you that the phones are LOCKED. Bought a code off a website and unlocked it, it is now usable on Rogers, but I'm with bell, so I will have to get a Bell Sim tomorrow.

thanks for the heads up
I just got my brand new Hero from Telus at square one.
I then put my Rogers sim card in.
I unlocked it successfully through mobileincanada.com it took 10 minutes to receive the unlock code.
Everything is working great so far. Except for wifi ... having issues connecting to any hot spots? it may be just weak signal or something ... will do some more investigating.
btw. My old phone was the HTC HERMES (I loved it for many years) but it's time to move on
Hey all right! Congratulations!

So, just checking: You live in Canada, right? You didn't drive there from USA, right?
I'm just looking at this from afar. So that mall has a main Telus store and a satellite store. For the smaller store, I see that the store mgr or seller provides a non-telus email address. So, for those who want this phone, i don't guess you'd think he'd sell & ship them, right?
Because what were the requirements to buy the phone? I'm just curious since so many people in US are trying to find a source where to buy these phones from.
How much did mobileincanada charge to unlock? And would they be a possible source for buying telus phones, and re-selling & shipping, at a markup, to USA?

This is how I feel about my T-mobile Wing... My unlocked Europe/GSM version of the Hero arrives tomorrow. I wanted the brown color Then I should just have to call up t-mobile's data group and get the settings to use it, with my swapped out sim card, right? (I know, i know, i won't get 3G. That's okay with me. there are many tradeoffs)
You don't need to meet any requirements to buy the phone outright. Other than having the cash to do so
I've bought 3 this week for USA members to ship to them. Was no biggie.

That's cool! FYI, if it seems worth your time to buy, sell, & ship, with a markup to make it worth your while, to others, there are folks over at HowardForums who also want this phone badly

Yes that's who I'm doing it for
I am waiting mine to arrive (my friend in Canada bought and shipped it to me).
Just now I went to HTC Canada's website and looked at the spec again:
Dual mode UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/2100MHz for
EU/Asia, 850/1900 for US and 850/2100 for Telstra)
It's funny how they list 850/1900 for US on HTC Canada's website, as if the phone was designed to work in the US. They could have put it much better by saying "850/1900 for Telus"... Only AT&T uses 850/1900 here in the US, and NO I don't think AT&T is carrying any Android device in the near future.
It's like "Hey, friends across the borders. I am sorry for making the Hero exclusively on CDMA networks in your country, but you know what, here is something that you may like."

Buy the Focus from AT&T, use on T-Mobile?

Currently I am in the market for a new WP7 phone, and the Focus seems to be the best one out there for my needs. I don't want a keyboard, the screen is great, and I think it's a good device.
Problem is, that I am on T-Mobile and the Focus isn't available there.
Any ideas on how I can get an unlocked Focus in the US? I don't mind paying full price for it, as I've got a Samsung Galaxy S (Unlocked) to sell when I get the new phone.
Thanks!
According to this post, Samsung tech support can provide an unlock code.
Only issue is of course, that the 3G won't work as I learned in another thread.
Kind of a moot point. I'm going with the HTC HD7. I was thinking about the Dell Venue Pro, but it's not out yet, and they have no real history of making phones so I'll just opt to get the one I want.
Actually, Dell VP was available in select MS stores. Should be available online at Dell site on 15th as well.
Not to mention, the VP is suppose to be an awesome phone.

Debrand samsung omnia 7

Can anyone do this debrand? is there a guide?
I have a Carrier version of the phone and the only branding is a spash screen on start up. WP7 was desigined to be carrier free with no overlays. Most carriers will put a hub with there related software in it which you can uninstall or remove the tile from the home screen.
the problem is that with my H3G brand i can't change the mms'apn settings so i can't send mms
exactly that is why I need to debrand mine purchased in Three.
Anyone?
I'm also wondering too mate!

Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887045 : download and install firmware (you may need to do 301k trick - i did but it was easy) there is no branding in sight on the rom I now have - it was originally t-mobiled up to the eyeballs.
Out of curiosity, why do people like to debrand their Omnia 7 phones?
People like to scratch out the branding, too.
Why?

'Because.....' isn't a proper answer.
Carriers brand their phones for marketing purposes, obviously.
Subsidized (cheaper w/ contract agreemnet) phones are branded, unsubsidized (full price w/o contract agreement) phones aren't.

It wasn't meant to be a proper answer. All you had to do is just dig a little further.
Cheaper than w/o contract or not devices bought through carriers are individuals own property and the reason for subsidizing is to generate more sales of their own services and not for placing adverts on the devices. Some people do not feel comfortable advertising the carriers on their devices while they the carriers were not involved in the manufacturing of the actual device. eg. if I buy a discounted device from Amazon I wouldn't be happy if they stamp their logo all over the device unless they mention the reason they are giving the discount is for advertising the logo on the device before purchase.
Maybe because "unbranded" NoDo update is being rolled out before the carrier versions? By running USAIP.pkg you can "trick" microsoft update into thinking you are in a region getting the unbranded update - as long as you are not carrier branded.
question - I have just bought a omnia 7 off ebay which i thought was on 3 but its on orange ... ive bought an unlock code off ebay (had good feedback) which im sat waiting for patiently ..... question is if i debrand does this void the 2yr warranty ??? there is a company on ebay which ive used before and they will debrand the phone for you for less than £20 ..

Hi, I did this yesterday but I used the H3G CSC (which is my network). After the flash, my phone is still branded.
What is the correct method to unbrand my phone? I tried to do it without the CSC but the tool didn't seem to allow it.

Considering DVP from Samsung Captivate

Hey guys,
I remember checking out the DVP a while ago and pretty much forgot about it up until the other day. Im really liking where windows is going with their mobile os so im considering the switch from my samsung captivate. I was checking on dell's website, and you can get the unlocked AT&T 3G version for $300, which i think is a pretty great deal.
My only questions are there any issues i should be aware of before i purchase one? also i live in canada so i will be running it on the Rogers network.. will everything pretty well work with me being in canada (like gps, apps, etc..)?
Any feedback is apprecaited! thanks
dvp is a great phone and the best one hands down if you need a keyboard.
But wait.. see what phones are coming. You should see the HTC ones offered in a few days.
HTC Omega (Eternity) with 4.7" screen... DNLA, AOLED (i don't want it if it is LCD) ..
i WAS waiting for the searay.. but that screen is to small.
I'm definitely looking for something with the keyboard as well. I personally love the look of the dvp. I know there was talk of the dell wrigley coming out.. But I don't know if it will be anytime soon. So I'm thinking if I sell my captivate I can afford this. Only other question I have is that there will for sure be the mango update for the phone right?
also is anyone interested in selling their at&t version of the phone? i thought i could get it of the dell ebay site using my canadian paypal account with an american shipping address but it wouldn't let me. so my only resort right now is to get it off ebay, or even here. in canada i need it for rogers, which is the same frequency as at&t
yes there is mango for the phone.. i'd bet everyone that reads this sub forum already has it on their phone.
why can't you get it from ebay? it doesn't ship to you guys up north? get it from dell's web site then.
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/mobile-venue-pro/fs
i managed to get it off dell.com this morning, but after some dealing with customer service. because its not offered on dell.ca right now, i had to use my credit card with a US shipping and billing address of where i was going to pick up the item, then contact the dell credit card verification centre, and tell them why the info i provided for my billing address wouldn't match the database. so it ended up working out in the end. and to me, $300 for a brand new phone, unlocked, and not contract.. seems like a steal.
so before i get receive the phone, does anyone have any tips or directions to point me? im going to give this thread a read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178338 and hopefully try to jump into getting mango on it ASAP. does anyone know what os version it ships with right now?

[Q] Buying an HD2 off ebay... What to look for?

Hey guys!
I'm excited to say that I'm about to buy an HD2!! I'm finally getting up to speed!! (Upgrading from my Topazi)
I'm planning on buying this off of ebay, but I'm not sure what to look for when selecting it. I'm going to buy new, even though it costs more... I've got AT&T and don't know if i can get a t-mobile one or if i have to get one that ebay says will work with AT&T or if i'm just putting too much thought into this...
Any tips you guys could offer on choosing one off of ebay? Thanks in advance!!
for att get the austrailian (telstra) version, not the tmobile one - this will allow you to get 3g. or if you get the tmobile one, you will NOT get 3g, just edge. (this is a hardware issue.)
other than that, i guess everything you look for is well, what you should look for, ya know?
Make sure it has five buttons on the front, not four as at least some of the Chinese clones have.
Buy only from someone with very high feedback, and a significant number of them.
Avoid buying something that has a stock photo in place of actual photos of what you are paying for.
By the same token, avoid items whose photos are blurry or hard to see. Good sellers have nothing to hide and won't try.
I recently bought my second HD2, this one a brand new unit, and it was a good deal all the way around. But I'm very careful. You should be too.
Ask questions before you bid. In my years of buying from eBay sellers I've come to use this as a way of gauging good service. If you can't get an answer to a simple question, you're unlikely to get one if you experience a problem with the transaction. Good service starts before the sale imho.
Good luck!

Thanks for that, it would suck to not have 3G up here... I can't find anything that specifically states "Telstra" or australian on ebay for new HD2's... I'm searching by compatible carriers and AT&T comes up- would that one work? Here's an example.
Thanks again in advance!
BTW- Do you live on/near MN 78? I'm near MN 33... I like the pic
Sorry mate for the late response. I don't know what the difference is for the telstra in looks. But I would assume it is NOT the one you mentioned unless it specifically states so. My guess is the one you linked is the European version. I woulf pm kameirus as he did what toy want to do.
And am a Minnesotan but in mpls. The highway sign just worked with my handle.
