[Q] is there a custom recovery that will work for me - Hero, G2 Touch General

I have been wanting to install a custom rom on my phone for several months now however no matter what method i try i am unsuccesful closest i have come is using rom manager which allows me to reboot into recovery but once the handset has rebooted home screen and power button just gets me to the triangle on screen and i have to remove battery. all flash recorder methods fail at either back up recovery
or writing flash.
I believe my phone is rooted as i can grant su to rom manager ect and androot tells me i am rooted it is like something resets recovery every time the handset boots into os.
i really have tried every method i have found but dare not try and install anything for fear of recovery not being available to me and i am now wondering if the 2.1 update has blocked something.
please help willing to make donation to any devs that can help me through this as well as the countless others having the same problem

there was one thread here .. try to search it i forget link it can explain you how to root official 2.1 otherwise run RUU & Do downgrade

according to all the programmes i run to check status of root (latest one is under the hood) it lists
Device: htc_hero hero
Root Status: Device routed
ro. build fingerprint: orange_uk/htc_hero/hero/hero:2.1-update1/ERE27/196735:user/release-keys
every programme that requires root access works for me tho i do have to grant it every time for programmes , the clockwork recovery has to be reflashed if phone has been restarted to enable me to access the recovery, and when i do this su pops up telling me it has been granted.

1 method i tried but never got past step backup recovery was this but i get message backup failed could not run command

Step 1:
It's advisable to format the SD Card before do this process. You're going to lose all the information in the SD Card, do a manual backup to your computer of whatever you want, to do it:
Settings -> SD Card & phone storage -> Unmount SD card -> Format SD card
Step 2:
Download the flashrec from http://code.google.com/p/flashrec/
Download the recovery image provided by Paul from http://www.romraid.com/paul/hero/1.2-hero-recovery.zip
Extract the 1.2-hero-recovery.zip to your PC.
Step 3:
Now copy flashrec and recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img (wich is inside the .zip file) directly to your SD card
Step 4:
Use an app installer from Google Market to install flashrec, i used ASTRO, but can be any other.
Step 5:
Once installed, open the program, click the button "Backup Recovery Image" and wait to finish, shouldn't take much time, this will do a backup of your actual recovery and put it in your SDCard with the name recovery-backup.img.

You're absolutely right, the 2.1 update for the Hero installs a recovery rom reset, so whenever you boot up your phone normally, it reflashes it (or possibly checks that it's not the original and then flashes).
I don't quite remember where this was done anymore, it might have been a script in /system/bin that gets called from init(rc), called something like flash_recovery.sh. Perhaps someone who isn't running a custom rom could help out and pinpoint it for future reference (I am so not going back from cyanogen 6.0
Edit: I grabbed unyaffs and checked out my old nandroids, it's /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, comment out the line in it (add a # at the beginning of the line) and it will not clobber your custom recovery

i have located file but now i feel really stupid as have not got a clue what to edit it with i am assuming it would be some type of txt editor and if u could specify the line i need to edit out or is it the name of the file i am changing,
really am gratefull for you pointing this out i had guessed what was happening just could find nothing to confirm it.

It might need to be a text editor that knows not to break unix line endings, but you can copy the file (cat file > /path/to/destination/file) to your sdcard or use adb to pull the file... fairly straightforward I thought.

A big thankyou to duck0 for identifying the problem and botoo for getting me to a happy conclusion with the correct commands
SOLUTION IS HERE USING Console mode from windows using ADB USB DEBUGGING HAS TO BE ENABLED WITH HERO CONNECTED TO PC THEN TYPE THE FOLLOWING
THEN ENTER AFTER EACH COMMAND

Thats it all done next step
INSTALL ROM MANAGER FROM MARKET IT IS FREE
open it and sellect flash alternate recovery image from the bottom, you can use the clockwork recovery but it is not compattable with all roms.
once done turn phone off, boot into recovery home + power choose to exit recovery with reboot shut down once again and if you can enter recovery then everything is sweet.

Step by Step for Rooting Rogers Captivate (I896)

Hey Guys
So one of the biggest questions I have seen in the last couple weeks since the Rogers captivate was released is how to root. I figured I would write a nice tutorial for everyone to make it easier!
Method 1: SuperOneClick
This is the easiest way, however most people have not been able to achieve root using this. Try this first if no luck move to method 2. Instructions on how to root using SuperOneClick can be found here
Method 2: Manual Root using ADB and Terminal
This one takes more time and not as easy to do as you have to do everything manually. But haven't heard of any problems with it yet
Step 1: Install <PDANet> Drivers. Just download the file and install. Select Samsung drivers. No need to actually install PDAnet on the Captivate you just need the drivers from the install. Follow the instructions with the installer to properly install the drivers.
Step 2: Download <Andriod SDK>.
- Extract the Android SDK .Zip file to C:\AndroidSDK (this should name the new folder created AndroidSDK in the C directory.
- Go to your start menu and search cmd or click run and type in cmd to open command prompt
- Type the following into command prompt, hitting enter at the end of each line
cd C:\AndroidSKD\Tools
adb devices
- You should see a serial number pop up. This is the serial number of your phone. This means ADB is set up
Step 3: Download <RageagainsttheCage Rooting Files>
- Extract them to the c:\AndroidSDK\tools\ folder. HAS TO BE IN THIS FOLDER FOR THE FOLLOWING COMMANDS TO WORK
Step 4: Unplug phone if it is plugged in. Then, on the phone, go to Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB Debugging is Checked ON.
Step 5: Plug phone back in to computer. Make sure SD are not mounted
Step 6: Reopen Command prompt if not open. In the command prompt enter the following, pressing enter at the end of each line
cd c:\androidsdk\tools\
adb devices
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Step 7: On the phone, go to Marketplace and download Terminal Emulator
Step 8: Leaving the phone plugged in, open the Terminal Emulator on the phone. Type the following, pressing enter at the end of each line
cd /data/local/tmp
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Step 9: WAIT. It will take a full minutes for the rage root to install. When finished you will see "Forked Childs". DO NOT DO ANYTHING TILL YOU SEE THIS. Terminal will allow you to type as it goes back to $ while it is installing BUUT DO NOT DO ANYTHING JUST WAIT(Cannot stress this enough)
Step 10: once "Forked Childs" appears, exit the Terminal App, and then reopen it. Instead of $ you should now see #. If not redo Step 7. Otherwise continue.
Step 11: Type the following hitting enter at the end
cat /proc/mounts
This should bring up a list (Easiest to view in landscape mode. Look for the following
/dev/block/XXXXXXXXXX /system YYYY ro 0 0 (the XXXXXXXXX part should be different depending on which device you have. The YYYY part will either be; ext2, ext3 or yaffs2 or something similar. )
My YYYY was rtf , not sure if it will be the same for everyone (though i assume it is)
Step 12: Now in the terminal window, using the info from above, enter the following, hitting enter at the end of each line (Be sure to enter spaces where needed as below)
mount -o rw,remount -t YYYY /dev/block/XXXXXXXXXX /system
cat /sdcard/Superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
cat /sdcard/su > /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
mount -o ro,remount -t YYYY /dev/block/XXXXXXXXXX /system
exit
Step 13: Close terminal window if still open. Check your app drawer and, assuming everything was completed properly, you should see Superuser. If not redo Step 12, again watching for spaces and using the correct info from Step 11.

No other method was working for me (not SuperOneClick, not these ADB instructions). Sure enough, using Terminal Emulator, I was able to get #. I wasn't able get this through adb, nor was I through SuperOneClick (infinite loop @ "mount" command).
I noticed a few things:
-When I compared filesizes from your provided Rage Root files, to the ones that were included in this thread (which also come with SuperOneClick—and which I was unable to get working), I noticed major differences. This gave me hope!, as I'd tried everything else that I knew how to prior to this point.
-My "XXXXXXXXXX" was actually only 4 characters: "stl6".
-My "YYYY" was only 3 characters ("rfs").
-SuperUser showed up on my applist without even requiring a reboot.
THANKS AGAIN
I shall now attempt to apply a lagfix; I will report back with results.
--Bah: no luck. RyanZA's OCLF V2.2+ returns error:

Yup same problem here. I was able to root it manually a few days ago, but have as of yet been unable to lag fix it.
Strange. After I rooted I had no problem using RyanZa's Lagfix. Your still using the stock rom after rooted correct?

Correct. I've tested out quite a few apps from the market, though.
When I mount my device, I notice that there are some files on my internal SDCard:
-su
-Superuser.apk
-nv_data.bin
-busybox (why is this there, I uninstalled that)
-update.zip
...and some folders:
-layar
-twc-cache
-Android -» data -» com.cooliris.media
-Android -» data -» com.google.android.apps.maps
-svox
...These all have subdirectories.
Not knowing what a default internal SD directory ought to look like, I wonder: Could any of these be causing a conflict? I read that some said not to have any apps installed on the SDCard while trying to mess around (with ROMs, I think), so I tried removing what I could, and then rebooting (and some folders respawned), and reapplying the fix—no dice. I've since replaced all of the folders and the files.
Stock rom here as well.
Hrmm not quite sure why lag fix isn't working for you guys. Just a quick question, in RyanZa One Click, is "Un-Root Device" green?
I still have no problems applying RyanZa Lag Fix to my Captivate as I had to redo it last night after i switched back to the Rogers stock rom after testing Cog 2.2. My guess, and it is just a guess, is that the root never applied properly. Have you tried rerooting the device?

Thought I might give you some info as well since i've been messing with mine for about a week now. I was able to root the device, oneclick did not work originally for this and I used ADB method similar to what you had here. After this I went for the lag fix, everything was green like it was supposed to be, installed the ext2 tools no problem and then get the same error about unable to mount when applying lag fix.
At this point I used OCLF to unroot the device and it did, I then used the oneclick to re-root which it did this time, in terminal I can su properly and again all the tools are green in OCLF. Tried to lagfix and failed again so I started making some changes manually based on the error messages that were out put. Created the folder it was trying to mount to for instance and then set the permission to this to 777 that would allow world write access, this allowed it to create the new partition in ext2 but when mounting the loopback device it fails saying it doesn't exist (which it doesn't I looked) so while I did get a bit further the lag fix still fails. I would gladly apply the lag fix manually through the terminal if I knew everything that was being done to re-format the partitions for ext3 but I can't seem to find that info anywhere.
Next best thing I would guess is to install a stock rom from rogers from someone else and see if there are any differences, I'm guessing based on the devices in the /dev folder that there are more then one image on the devices some set up more similar to AT&T that the lag fix will work on.

Try the stock rom in the main Rogers Captivate forum. It is one i used to go from Cog 2.2 back to stock and it applied the root and lag fix without a hitch. Give it a try and let us know!

I'm new to the whole android thing though I've been working with linux for years but its a bit of a learning curve coming from a blackberry.
also what are you using to flash your device?

I was finally able to get my last night.
Turns out my first root attempt was a failure. I had to unroot via an update.zip method as i did not have the permissions to remove the files from terminal.
Once unrooted i then did the update.zip method for the I897, and modified the script to look for I896 instead. It worked flawlessley. I am now getting the pop-up asking for root permissions. I had never seen it work previously.
I was then able to install OCLF without any problems. (and it popped up asking for root)
I am now rooted and lag fixed. Previous quadrant score was at 860's and i pulled a 2285 last night after the OCLF.
Can you please tell us how to modify script and how to flash back to stock..I need to return my phone and superuse app wont go away after unrooting and factory reset

Well i cannot help you flash back to stock as i don't quite know how to do that yet myself. But i can help you unroot, re-root, and lag fix.
I have found the files again and uploaded them to rapid share with the necessary modifications.
Download THIS FILE and once downloaded, rename it to update.zip Be careful not to name it update.zip.zip by accident.
Place the file into the root of your sdcard.
Shutdown the phone with the power button, or pull the battery out and put it back in.
Enter recovery mode:
While holding the volume up and volume down buttons press and hold the power button until you see the white text that says SGH-I896, then release the power button only.
When in recovery mode use the volume down key to highlight reinstall packages, then press the power button. It should say completed and reboot the phone.
Once the phone has rebooted, do the exact same thing again, only use THIS FILE instead. Dont forget to rename the file again!
Then install the OCLF from market. Install the EXT2 tools first. Then run the lag fix installer.
I assume you already know how to enter recovery mode, but this way someone else searching for a fix will have all the info at their disposal here.

Hi all i am very lost here....i have tried for hours the last few days on how to root this i896 with the super one click method with no luck....anyways i was speaking to my brother earlier and he has done it with his bell vibrant no problem....anyways what i want to know is what is the purpose of rootindg the phone? I thought it was for downloading 3rd party apps or whats the purpose for superuser? The reason why i am asking is that i can download 3rd party apps already...i allow them on my application settings and download a app downloader and works fine? Im lost someone please help.

I am having a really annoying problem though. The superuser.apk that you included just gave me a black screen. So I updated it to this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828&highlight=no+apps+in+list
Which is newer. But now it just says "no apps in list". Tried installing it from the zip, tried from the market no different.
I do have apps that require superuser: ROM Manager, Root Explorer, Adfree. They all work, also have titanium backup but its is telling me it needs root access.
How can I fix this, it is a major issue.

when i copy update.zip into the /sdcard and then try hitting reinstall packages, it results in an error and aborts. any suggestions?

I'm glad its working for others. I had one heck of a time finding the right combination of files and process's for the I896. I am an IT professional and it took me a few days of fumbling around all the I896 and I897 posts.
Anyways, glad to hear it worked, and i hope other people find it useful as well. I will keep the originals, so if the links go down someone just PM me and i will load them somewhere else.

Thanks for the update files they worked like a charm. I had a similar issue where the device didn't seem to be properly rooted, though it didn't give me any issues with most things when applying the lagfix it would die.
applied both your unroot and then root and it worked flawlessly the first time, lagfix then ran with no issues and my quadrant scores are 2250 now.
Not sure what you did exactly, I've tried rooting from update.zip from oneclick and neither worked I ended up rooting with the ADB and though it seemed to work it apparently did not.

Can't write on internal SD card after root

After having rooted (with nexus 10 toolkit v1.3.0) my nexus 10 and flashed AOPK Nexus 10 (WIP) Task650 & Ktoonsez (1-4) rom, I'm unable to upload to, change or move any files or folders on my internal SD card. I installed Root Explorer and changed from Mount R/O to Mounted as r/w. Access is granted by Super SU. I also tried to change permission settings, unfortunatedly without any success. There appeared the following message:
"Warning
Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Is there a possibility to change these permissions in order to be able to create and move files and folders on my SD card?

Just so we are clear, when you say "upload to, change, or move" are you meaning you cannot copy a file from your computer to your Nexus 10? Or just that you cant arrange stuff through root explorer from within the tablet itself?
Neither copying from PC to Nexus nor arranging stuff through root exlorer from within the tablet itself. I can't even download an email attachment and put it to the SD card. The card seems to be locked.
I had that problem once but I dont remember what caused it or what exactly I did to fix. I think I just did a complete wipe by locking and unlocking the bootloader and then installing a new ROM again.
I think I did this too (unroot, lock bootloader, then root and unlock bootloader) and then installed the same rom again. I will try it this time with another rom.
Isn't there really no other solution to get access to my SD card again??

Are you using a toolkit to unlock and root? If so them maybe it is not doing something right and it messing up a permissions somewhere. It could also be a driver problem on your PC with being unable to copy a file to the tablet.

I am using the nexus 10 toolkit V1.3.0. Right now I'm trying to intall twrp recovery with a fully wiped sd card. No easy task fot me being a noob...
In ClockWorkMod, make sure that /data is mounted
Then download the Android SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I usually put all the files just in C:/android-sdk-windows
Once you have it all there open up the SDK Manager and download all the additional files needed. You probably only need to download "Android SDK Tools" and "Android SDK Platform-tools", but I always download the other files for whatever version of Android I am running, in our case Android 4.2. That way I have them if I need to do something else.
Once downloaded, open the Android-sdk-windows/platform-tools directory. copy:
adb.exe
adbWinApi.dll
adbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
to your base C:/Android-SDK-Windows directory.
Now open command prompt from Start -> run
type: cd C:/Android-SDK-Windows
type: "adb devices" and it should list your tablet. It will actually say something with your devices serial number and then "Recovery" after it, showing your tablet is in recovery. If you dont see this then you either dont have your tablet mounted right from in the Recovery, ClockWorkMod is stupid, or you dont have working adb drivers.
Now copy the ROM you want to flash to C:/Android-SDK-Windows
Then type: "adb push blahblahblah.zip /data/media/0"
That should push the ROM to the root of your SD card. Give it time, it takes a while to push a ROM file. Once it is done, flash the ROM.
That *should* put it in the right spot where it looks like it is on your "internal storage" (what you see when navigating files within the ROM). If you dont see the ROM in clockworkMod then keep navigating back to the root of your internal storage and then open up "data", then "media", then "0" and you should see it. If you still cant find the ROM, push it again but just use "/data/media" as the location.
I just did all these steps myself to verify I remembered it all correct and I was able to successfully copy a ROM and find it on my tablet to flash by doing everything I just listed above. SO you should be good to go if you follow all those steps properly. I know it looks like a lot of work, but it really isnt and will go quite fast. Most of it is just the setup for getting ADB and Fastboot ready to use.

^^^^^ To flash that you will want to do a similar thing as how you pushed the ROM to your device. Only this time you will copy the kernels' "boot-r4.img" file into your android-adk-windows directory and use the command: "fastboot flash boot boot-r4.img"
While I enjoy the KTManta kernel more, it does require a bit of tweaking to get running perfect. Which is one of the things I like about it because of all the options to tweak. But for someone just learning this stuff that would be a bad thing, so Franco's kernel is much better than stock and doesnt require you to adjust anything once it is flashed to your tablet.

Kobo Arc Development

So I was randomly flying around on Google today, and I noticed that someone had claimed to root the Kobo Arc, and gave written instructions here -- http : // www . mobileread . com / forums / showthread.php?p=2584491 (Remove the spaces, XDA won't let me post an actual link, since I don't have 10 posts yet). After running through this myself, I went on the Google Play store and used root checker. Much to my surprise, it worked, and my device now has root access. I even tested with Root Explorer, and mounted the system partition as R/W, and I can move things in and out of it. I'm currently working on trying to get a custom ROM working, but I'm worried that I will cause a brick, since Cyanogen doesn't support the Arc. (yet...)

i have absolutely no idea what im doing but I think I have dumped 12 partitions using
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p10 of=/sdcard/p10.img
is there anyone around that fancies a challenge? im in a position where bricking this thing isn't really much of a problem so if someones up for a challenge and wants to help im willing to lend myself and the device to this

Haha. As soon as I found a thread called "root the Kobo Arc" on Google, I posted it here right away. Sorry if I deprived you of the satisfaction! *troll*
Joking aside, I'm not too sure about the bootloader. I think it's pretty locked down (since I put a nexus 7's cyanogenmod onto the data partition and rebooted. It tried to updated, but said validation failed, or something of that sort). I can't install any custom recoveries either, since I have no idea how to do it in the first place, and there's none made for the Arc.
Also, I analyzed the Arc with the "Droid Examiner" App from the play store (That is a really great app, just so you know), and found that it uses a board called "zeus". The funny thing, though, is that one of Sony's Xperia phones, also has a board called "Zeus", and there's Cyanogenmod for that (albiet not the latest version). However, these two devices have nothing in common. The closest thing to an Arc that has Cyanogenmod is the Nook HD/HD+, which uses the exact same chip (OMAP TI 4470).
If someone is smart enough (not me) to analyze the Cyanogenmod files for the Nook, and see how they work, that may lead into flashing the Arc.
Anyway, I'm resetting the Arc, since I'm having weird cases where the Arc would freeze after booting it from sleep mode, and I'd have to turn it off and on again. I think that was something else I did, since it happened before the root, but neh, I might as well try this all from factory default settings.

I've been looking at starting my own recovery mod branch but its no simple task by the looks of it, if their are similar devices we can use all their data and tweak it to ours which would help a lot!
Oh I think we have fast boot, I held vol down and pushed power on, it just sat at the kobo arc screen, I used the nexus 7 driver from the universal adb/fastboot driver I found on here and it connected up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263822
I stumbled on some to good to be true program on Xda dev that apparently can root anything and unlock any bootloader once your in fastboot mode. I have tried that part and it said it was successful but i have no idea how to test this out yet, the program does a bunch of other stuff too, the adb stuff worked as did apk sending, and the rooting options knew i was rooted, it also has flashing functions, I'll be damed if I can find it now I'm at home though , I'll have another look.
I don't mind doing leg work but if someone can read the map it would be very helpful!

Um... Okay. I've installed the drivers (I think I installed them correctly), and I booted my device using "volume down + power". I have it connected to my System, but whenever I try to use one of the options in the Android Root Toolkit, it tells me it's waiting for the device. I don't know what I did wrong, but something's clearly not working.
As far as the recovery goes, I think that looking at the Nook Tablet from TWRP would work quite nicely. It runs on a similar processor ( I believe it's a OMAP TI 4430 ), and it seems to be quite similar in specs to the Arc. If only I was a bit better at programming...

Okay, so I can't even push apps to the Arc using ADB. I think you have to boot into recovery (power + volume up). I don't know how to use the terminal at all (I'm lost, I know D: ), so I don't have that installed on the Arc. I remember being able to do ADB even with my Sony Reader (First gen, PRST1), so I'm not sure why the Arc isn't quite working. I have both drivers installed, BTW.
As for the recovery, I can't even find a method to flash it. I'm still trying everything I can, though. :\

im not sure that's going to work you know, ive had some permission errors with adb which suggests the root isn't full, terminal on the device works fine, but adb just has some problems, adb shell and the su seems to fix them.

I've already tried that recovery method (I spent about two hours just googling), and it doesn't work with the Arc. The ADB won't let me push the image over.
As for Cyanogenmod, I tried something yesterday. A person on the Mobileread forums (apparently a Kobo employee) put out an update.zip file for the Kobo Arc. The file was quite old, and it's really just the 4.1.1 update that (I hope) we're all running. He said that as long as you put it on the root of the data partition, the Arc will flash it immediately. When I tried taking a Nexus 7's Cyanogenmod file and sticking it in the same place, the Arc started flashing it, but then just said there was an error with the update. So I personally think that you do require a properly signed ROM.
However, if you open up Kobo's update.zip using Winrar, a sidebar pops up that says "signed by SignApk". I don't know too much about this, but couldn't we use this "signapk" to sign our own ROMS and flash them?

I think there is a problem with the setup, I just flashed a CW recovery image and it worked, or didn't rather! but the concept did, transferred, flashed using adb, I had to replace it though as it was totally borked and kept restarting, apparently the touch based recovery methods can be like that, ill have some good time tomorrow night (UK time) if your about, and ill keep at it tonight if I get a chance!

exit adb shell and type
adb reboot recovery
fixed it by holding power button and vol down to boot to fastboot recovery
then ran

inputrecovery being my original recovery file taken from partition 8!
ive updated the partition map on the post above with my progress, but it looks like we can flash to them my name so its probably less relevant now
oh ive ditched the drivers I was using and reinstalled the drivers from the official SDK, generic android adb for within android and android bootloader for fastboot

Yaaas!! recovery replaced
ok, deleting or renaming /etc/install-recover.sh appears to have stopped custom recovery being changed back to stock after reboot, I used the recovery builder to make a build from partition 8, which it did without error, flashed using the above commands.​
Still don't know what im doing though, but progress is progress ​
ill post a link to the custom recovery ive made soon, we need to make up some fstab file listing all the mounts etc, i tried one but it must be borked as recovery couldnt see anything​

I have made a stable and thus far, a working custom recovery.
its mounting everything and backing up / restoring works as it should, unless anyone can find any issues I consider this step in building a complete ROM completed,
you must have root, download arctic.apk and install on your tablet, you will need to enable unknown sources In dev options first
you must have android and java sdk also installed, you will need to add the google usb drivers in the android sdk, you will find them in the "extras"
Enable usb debug on the arc and install the generic google adb usb drivers
Delete or rename /etc/install-recover.sh this will make the custom recovery persistent
Copy the recovery.img to the SDCard, either by using drag and drop in windows ( to root of "internal storage") or by adb push, if you use adb push then remember to copy recovery.img to the same folder as adb
adb push recovery.img /sdcard/
The next job is to open up a command window and navigate to adb folder, type the following exactly, even better copy and paste them!
adb shell
su
cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/recovery
exit adb shell (ctrl+C) and type
adb reboot recovery
and bobs your uncle, one happy new recovery

that's the easy bit, I have a feeling I need to make a couple of changes to the recovery.img but noting major, just a couple of other mounts I may have missed
I probably would like some help with the next bit however.
im just trying to build a development platform, I have a loathing for Linux as a desktop so will need to re educate myself without throwing my laptop out of the window, after that "challenge" the ROM should be easy
Well, I've just done it, and it works. Everything seems to be in order for the time being. I'm going to muck around with the new capabilities, and see what I can do.

Earlier I posted about how to un-root the 3G Slide and go back to the latest 2.2.1 RUU from HTC. Big mistake -- who knew it would be so flipping hard to go back to rooted? My problem was, the WiFi in CM7.2 stable for this phone was terrible! But being confined to an un-rooted stock phone was worse. After doing the below, I flashed the latest radio, and put the latest nightly on the phone for CM7.2 and it's a little better, but still loses connection fairly often FYI - if anyone has any working solutions to the WiFi issues with this phone I'm all ears. But that aside, here's why I'm writing this post.
After spending nearly 4 days trying every root method I could find for the myTouch 3G Slide with the latest 2.2.1 stock ROM - I almost gave up when I decided to try something different. Luckily for me, it worked -- and best part is, I didn't have to touch a PC to do it! So I thought I'd share and hopefully save someone else some headache. Chances are, you've tried some other methods before finding this post too, so you should do a factory reset on your phone (Settings -> Storage -> Factory Reset) to get back to square 1. Also, delete any files you've used as well, and be sure to download the files using the links I've provided below, as they are known to work (for me at least).
What you'll need:
1) I know I said no PC required, but creating the goldcard hardly counts -- after this step, it's phone-only -- Goldcard - wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Howto:_Goldcard -- I found that the psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard site was down quite often, so an alternate is here: huygens.hoxnet.com/goldcard.html - also, this tool helps: www.modaco.com/topic/308798-pc-application-goldcardtool/
I have to say, I had already created a goldcard for many of the other methods I had tried, so I'm not 100% certain it is required, but it only takes a minute to create, so do it anyways.
2) Download www.4shared.com/file/sz0VO2TL/SlideEng-package.html from this link and use an app on your phone like AndroZip Free to extract the zip on your sdcard. I extracted mine to the /sdcard/downloads/ directory. Which is the directory I'll use in the shell commands below.
3) Download the GingerBreak 1.20 apk, and install the app on your phone. Note, because this app isn't in the market you'll have to enable "Unknown Sources" in your settings to be able to install it. droidmodderx.com/gingerbreak-apk-root-your-gingerbread-device/ - Note that USB debugging must be enabled in your phone settings for GingerBreak to work.
4) Download www.4shared.com/file/OsmF_ZD7/ESPRIMG.html and place the ESPRIMG.zip file in the root of your sdcard (/sdcard/ESPRIMG.zip)
5) Download CWM recovery download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-espresso.zip and rename it to update.zip - place it also in the root of your sdcard (/sdcard/update.zip)
That's all you need, now let's get started:
1) Open the GingerBreak app and press the "root" button.
2) Wait a few minutes for it to run, if successful the phone will reboot. Once it has rebooted ensure that it was able to install the Superuser app.
3) Install any RAM booster app. I used the quick boost button in: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.memorybooster.lite
4) Install Terminal Emulator app from the Market.
5) Open your RAM booster app and click on "boost" RAM. You'll need ~ 70% free RAM for the next step to work.
6) Open the Terminal Emulator app.
7) Type the following commands into the terminal (don't type the $ or #'s below):
$ su
# cp /sdcard/downloads/flash_image /data/local/
# cp /sdcard/downloads/mtd0.img /data/local/
# cd /data/local/
# chmod 04755 *
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
8) If you get a memory error when executing that last command it's because your ram booster didn't free up enough memory. Try again, sorry.
9) Now power off your phone.
10) Hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons to power on the phone into hboot.
11) Wait while it searches for and verifies your ESPRIMG.zip file on the sdcard.
12) Once it's verified, press VOLUME UP on the phone to say "Yes" to the installation.
13) When it's done installing the ESPRIMG.zip file DO NOT restart the phone! Press VOLUME DOWN to say "No".
14) Use volume buttons to highlight "recovery" from the menu, and press Power to select it.
15) If you see a red triangle with an exclamation point in it press VOLUME UP + POWER to get past it into recovery.
16) Once in recovery, choose apply update.zip from sdcard.
17) update.zip will run, and afterwards you should be in Clockworkmod recovery. From there you can wipe the data, and install any custom ROM you want.

This thread assumes you want to root the phone in order to flash something like Cyanogenmod. If you simply want to update to the latest stock firmware, this may work -- http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/ (Look for the Espresso exe).

*UPDATED**UNLOCK TOOL (4-2019) for ALL Versions of BLU R1-HD

BLU R1-HD bootloader unlock script tool, and TWRP install tool.
Download is a zip file, unpack it to somewhere you will remember. Run the dirty-cow-tool.bat // mtk-su-tool.bat
The included files and folders are set to hidden, in effort to keep them safe from accidental delete.
Must have adb+fastboot + drivers installed and setup prior to using tool
Easiest method to install adb + fastboot on windows is with "15 second adb + fastboot install TOOL"

It is for windows
In linux :
"sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb"
"sudo apt-get install android-tools-fastboot" Some fastboot commands were missing when i used this one ie "fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability"
"sudo apt-get install fastboot" worked better when I tried. ( i used that command as a check before doing the unlock, so it was needed only for that check)
Using Tool
On Windows?
Unzip the downloaded file to a new folder, open new
folder and click on "dirty-cow-tool.bat". // "mtk-su-tool.bat"
Do the steps in order (1-2-3-4) to be unlocked, then
Step (5) to get to second page where step (1) is root
The rest is optional
On Linux?
Unzip downloaded file to new folder folder .
Open folder. Then open R1-Linux-tool-v2 folder
Open terminal from that folder and type
" . R1-HD-TOOL.sh "
Same order of steps (1,2,3,4) step (5) for extra
Steps (1 on second menu) for superSU root.
Second menu steps (2,3,4,5,6,7,8) are optional.
**Linux Note**
The tool uses "fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability" as one of the methods to check before doing the unlock.
The version of fastboot that installed with "apt-get install android-tools-fastboot" did not recognize
this command. But "apt-get install fastboot" updated some version and then the command was recognized.
******OTHER NOTES****
--- this has been mentioned in the general thread and the modified v17 thread, but It has come up again so I wanted to make note of it.----
--- The newest blu versions (V7.4.2 and V17) Have made changes to "toolbox" and this effects things like "adaway" and "titanium backup"
--- The suggested fix is to install busy-box. I have had success with the version from play store, some prefer to use f-droid version. Either one will do. Install it and open the app. From in the app you need to do an install.

******I have received some reports that some devices are reporting "ro.build.product =R1_HD and not "BLU_R1_HD" like mine, so the added device check is blocking tool from starting If this happens to you , you can make edit to the .bat file like below.

So I got the one-click-root.sh done, maybe. Can some linux users go over it, make sure I didn't do anything stupid? I don't exactly have a device to check it with atm, and I am not pro with scripting, barely novice, so it is a pretty basic conversion of the batch file. Still, it might work . Just would like a few eyes on first.

As far as the begining of the batch, It is adding a few folders to the "path" variable so help ensure the "adb push" commands find the files it is trying to push. Then it sets some folder "flags" to hidden so that the files the batch needs don't get accidentally moved or changed. Then the large section with mostly "echo" that is to set up the "simulated" G.U.I.
The lines of just "::::::::::" are simply used to help with reading the batch file. i use them to seperate functions. They are not needed.
The lines with only 2 "::" are standard windows comment / remark line entries
The lines with 1 ":" are the beginning line of the loop/ function == the line that "goto *" searches for

It is supposed to. It is the same base codes used from original script, and that one was confirmed to work. I Do not have first hand use of V7.4.2 so it is only confirmed through other users.
The dirty-cow being used has been patched by google in Dec but blu has not rolled out the patch. So there is no reason for it not to work.

I have the linux version ready.
-the first step, (ADB Push) is ready. including md5 file checks
-step 2 is ready= running dirty-cow with md5 check before final writing to mmcblk device
-step 3 is ready unlocking bootloader = including check if unlock is done, but need to fix the "unlock_adility" check
I can make to file to compare and grep the line needed, but cannot "sed" the extra information or do a > < comparison
-step 4 is ready .--flash twrp
Finished 90% of tool.
still need to tweek the log feature.
I ran tests on the lop back to menu and test ran
1. push files for dirty-cow and md5 check . then made push fail to verify the check method was valid ==pass
2. run dirty cow commands and md5 verification on resulting file. ==pass
3.unlock bootloader --- I ran it (needed to fake the already unlocked check) it works == pass
4 . flash twrp --installed both version i have, both install fine ===pass
5 extra menus -- ran . install su-----debloat---rebloat--- add fm radio--- preloader roll back =====all pass
(bootloader roll back needs manual intervention to re-enter fastboot during the boot loop that is unavoidable)
6. instruction ====not written yet
7. exit yes it closes == pass
8. logs --- needs completeing

I would note that the batch file does not actually create the /sdcard/Download folder so you might need to go into the terminal and actually create this on your sdcard... also worth noting that this batch file **requires** an sd card in the device to do any of the loads in the "5" menu.

no it does not.
the /sdcard is the internal memory and the Download folder is already there.
you might be having issues but the folder is already part of normal system

Fair enough, my restore didn't have /sdcard/Download and I made an assumption that /sdcard was my mounted card. Thanks for the insight.
OOPS
found typo on V4 of tool. batch files sets variables for "return", from loop functions. And two returns were set to same label9, so if you had tried to do extra's menu option #8. "ROLL Back Preloader" , instead it was running option # 5. " MTK_BLU Debloat v2"
fixed and still reading and re-reading to search for errors.
This looks bad.
The reason I put together this tool was I felt it was important to make a way to minimize the problems usually associated with android modifications. By making "typo's" a thing of the past, and I found them in my own script.

Ok. After you have completed upto twrp install. You can do the options on #5. It is all programed and automatic. What is does is put zip files onto the phone and reboots phone into recovery, then recovery installs them.

I get up to the recovery installation, but then I can not access such recovery on the phone, If I turn it on with power+vol up, it takes me to the default factory recovery by blu.
And If I try to the super su step with the phone on, it resets it, and get it to the screen with the dead android, while the script just shows the ADB DETECTED message.
In case it's needed, my R1 HD is running on

You missed a step in the process.
As tool finishes the recovery install it comes to a "pause" in the script, you need to hold the volume up button on phone "before" pressing button on pc keyboard to continue.
If phone does a normal reboot at this point then the system will replace the newly installed recovery with the stock one.
Giving you the situation you have now.
This step I cannot control, you must press volume button on phone to get the boot menu, and directly boot into recovery to ensure that the install sticks.

When tool says Hold button , keep it held. Then continue the script. Phone should reboot to the boot menu. Then let go of volume
Some phones do not accept the fastboot reboot command, on those phones need to hold power to shut off. Then volume and power together to come on, release power when screen come on
