Hardware Info:
- There's no specification of the screentype in the manual or on the box. It looks better than de Touch HD in brightness and colour, but i can't say for sure it's an SLCD.
- Compartment for SIM + SDHC is nicely finished and apparently a lot more resistant to dust and stuff than the Touch HD. (Cover here is fine).
- The camera does come out pretty far. Not really annoying, but it is a bit like a pimple.
- The sound from the build in speaker is good. It lacks some bass, but what else is new. It doesn't have a great max volume, but it sounds overall beter dan de Touch HD. (much less schrill)
- The piece around the flash is a patch of rubber/plastic from the same material as the battery+sim cover. It's just a little thicker, so it sticks out a bit. Very little though. It's properly attached and doesn't come loose.
Additional info (speed and such)
- To sync with my Google Apps it does need Google Talk? Never heard of, let's find out.
- The link to the HTC Sense site works well and the lag between them is really minimal. Click on the site to make it ring, and the DHD starts ringing immediately.
-Surfing is (with 3g) a whole whole lot faster than with the Touch HD. On the THD you'll have to wait for it to render the page and the pictures, on de DHD it's all done in a second or so.
- The Sense skin (and Android ofcourse) provide a far better user experience than the THD on WinMo.
- The rendering of the windows is instant, just as the browsing and the animations. I'm not yet familiar with Android, so I don't know what's normal.
- There's no CD in the package, only a small quick guide with the insert-battery stuff in it. The phone isn't on the support site from HTC yet, so the full manual isn't available yet
-Important: if you're going to use the phone to synchronise with Google Apps or go to the marketplace (or in fact to anything whereby you need a google account) you need to enable the service 'Chat' in your Google Apps dashboard. Else the phone rejects your account and gives an error about google talk or so.
-By default the languages are limited to: English, Francais, Deutsch and Dutch. You can get a keyboard in Turkish and many, many other languages (including arabic as far as I can see)
-The power off (hold powerbutton and choose power off) takes some time (measures:....5 seconds). The powerup then takes 1 or 1,5 seconds. Very quick! All apps are closed during the shut down.
-The restart (really a power off and a cold reboot) takes about 30 seconds.
Results:

Desire HD - 1879 points
Nexus one 2.2+ - 1300 points
Samsung Galaxy S - 800 points

I guess if the guy says its a better screen than the touch hd which has a 480 x 800 pixels lcd and he's saying the colours are better and its much brighter than maybe, just maybe it really is s-lcd.
Would also love to hear about the audio from the external speaker and the video quality and audio..

i was just about to post that! It does look really good compared to the other phone which is using LCD i presume.
However in picture 5 it looks like that black patch around the flash is about to come off. Is it meant to be like that?

look at the screen next to the touch hd, Im sold...that screen looks fine to me, the camera looks like its going to get some serious table damage though, still, I feel much happier now and maybe I wont be going on and on as much....mmm then again

i actually dont think the lens will be damaged because if you look closer at that pic, the lens is slightly beveled in. The edges are protruding very slightly so the edges might get scratched, but not the lens.

HTC HD video

I don't know if anyone else have this video posted but take a look.
It is actually a good review - touchflo seems to have come on leaps and bounds which is still not evident on the diamond (inspite of the fact it has the same processor - more mem perhaps?).
The woman narrating did a decent job except she did make me laugh a few times unintentionally (she got a little too excited about the size of the screen )... Looking at the size of the device though - it is actually pretty big! The Samsung looks to be the optimal size for a smartphone... The HTC screen is superb though

WOW! Very nice video indeed!
My Touch Pro´s TF3D is _almost_ as snappy as that one. Not much difference, hardly noticeable...
another nice video
this is the www.pda.pl video of the HD in HD!!!
...almost like having one...

Gawd damn it!
That looks good, that is very smooth and very nicely proportioned!
lets answer this battery question and get the phone on the shelves to be sold.

The french accent.
I'm french and I prefer the original version with the man who hold the touch HD.
the one from vimeo is mind blowing... seems like htc finally decided to make their devices useful and finger-friendly.. touchflo works as it should ever had to.. simply can't wait!

I'm English and a woman speaking French (or English with a French accent) does wonders for me!
After watching the latest video and esp. seeing TouchFlo performance and that it is not that much bigger than the Diamond I am edging towards the Blackstone over the Xperia X1 (probably be out before the Sony anyway).
Can anyone remember how long the Diamond took to reach the carriers after the official launch? Seeing as the Blackstone is launching on Nov 6th and Orange are more than likely to stock it I am just trying to figure out a timeline....

Problem i see with the X1 is it has a higher res display on virtually the same size screen as the Touch Pro making text even smaller. Now the Touch HD has a much larger screen and higher res thant he X1.
I have one on pre-order and no Windows Mobile device has excited me like this one, it looks fantastic, latest is it should be hitting early November, cannot wait for you guys to start making it work so much better as usual.

Are you kidding??
A-GPS is GPS!!! Its the normal GPS just enhanced by the ability to download sattelite position information over the net, which makes it much faster then the normal GPS. A stands for assisted. So it's calles A-GPS. Theres no reason you would want the "old" GPS.
Raziel1 is spot on AGPS has all the features of GPS with the additional feature of a quick fix using sat positions that can be downloaded OTA so is superior to GPS. The Touch HD will have AGPS

It's fine as long as you can turn the a- off.
Here in Australia the cost of the net assistance is way beyond the value of it, so I only want the "old" GPS.

Xperia Reviews - Let the Battle Begin

Hi,
Post any reviews that you find in this thread, with a small conclusion if possible.
NOTE: I have added a poll to this thread, but do not cast your vote yet. Let as many reviews come in, and then vote.
Reviews: (links to reviews will be added here as they start coming in after being confirmed to be reviewing the final build)
Old Links:
Description: The first review of Xperia to hit the Web. Does not go into much detail on performance and speed but covers a lot of stuff in detail and has a couple of really good pictures.
Link: http://www.jouwmobiel.com/review/view/05-10-2008/Sony+Ericsson+X1
Side-Notes: The biggest concern of theirs was ease-of-use. According to them, using your fingers is hard when you start going into inner menus/windows... However in my opinion, you can set the font size to your needs and can easily overcome this. Furthermore, they say that default panels are great but lacking in functionality - which i agree with, but hopefully new panels will come with more functionality and appeal. (For instance, consider the SpbShell panel or others available at SE's site)
Descriptions: M3's review of Xperia. Not too much detail, just the gyst of it all.
Link: http://m3.idg.se/2.1022/1.183975/fo...ria-x1&usg=ALkJrhjPndp9Yybs6iISJnj1OhWlA9MLBw
Side-Notes: Build quality is great but will Panels live up to the expectations? X-Panels are a bit slow at times - same as what Generation Phone House guys said - but hopefully an update will fix it up. The camera is not as good as can be expected from Sony Ericsson (although in my opinion, having seen sample shots, i think it is great!). TF3D from Touch Pro/Diamond is smoother than Panels - in the sense of switching screens/panels. Spb shell is the absolute best screen at the moment.

Videos: (links to Youtube and other videos - showcasing the final xperia. Videos included within reviews are not included in this list)
Description: Xperia Testing...
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjatGzL-QRA
Notes: Very nice and really fast. Near the end she switches from landscape to portrait and it is almost instant if not exactly.
Description: A look at SE panel... Very smooth and fast!
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OnnDosWiuY
Description: EMP Xperia Video 1 - Goes over the interface of Xperia via various apps. No dialogue and the video is stretched, but worth looking at.

Description: EMP Xperia Video 2 - Word, Excel, browsing, etc.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAE5U-klAHw
Description: Swedish? or some other non-Enligh review. Takes you through panels - more of a quick glance - in the first vid. The second link looks at the keyboard. And the third video again looks at panels though this time using the finger rather than a stylus.

Link 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gbFgJ8d4mU
Link 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D24GNI-ZKB4
Notes: i'm really liking what i see...
Old Links:
Description: A demonstration by Xperiancers. Though they say that it is not the final device, but is the pretty close to it - prob. with the increased RAM and all.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zal6JJn5F38
Notes: Fast. Silver looks Good! Showcases the Spb Panel as well!
Thanks to hrcro for sharing.
Description: A demonstration by Generation Phone House of Xperia.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LlrJAncJxE
Notes: "Finishes impeccable design and fun, this XPERIA X1 is a true success. The camera is effective and the presence of a 3.5 jack a real asset! The app is rather fast, only the X Panel has been a bit slow at times..."
Side-notes: Panels work pretty great in his video, but like he said the X Panel is a bit slow at times.

Best regards.
Thanks to Jabe for pointing out this review, which is probably the very first Xperia review - i.e. the very first review of the final Xperia device.

The biggest concern of theirs was ease-of-use. According to them, using your fingers is hard when you start going into inner menus/windows... Furthermore, the default panels are great but lacking in functionality but hopefully new panels will come with more functionality and appeal.
Note: There is speculation that this is also a prototype model's review, and we can't confirm as the reviewer does not state it to be the final set and neither are specs, etc. detailed. Hopefully we'll see more reviews come out in the next day or so.
That keyboard review kinda disappointed me, I was hoping it would feel as good (if not better with bigger keys) than the Touch Pro but just have less functionality... Turns out, according to that review, it feels worse AND has less functionality.
I expected the keyboard review to be just like that.
Regarding the reviewer - its MR from Mobile-Review. I've asked him over there to clarify whether the review is a final retail unit.
not totally happy with the review, of course...
I would like pictures in low light conditions too to see how flash works...
The major problem in my opinion is the tiny text size, thats really sad.
Is it smaller than the diamond for exemple? Because diamond is VGA @ 2.8" and Xperia is WVGA in 3", maybe not that different? I'm used with diamond fonts.

We knew from the beginning that it wouldn't beat Touch Pro's keyboard... HTC did an awesome job with that one.

Well, I knew it wouldn't perform like the TP's keyboard (5 row to 4 row obviously) but I figured with the bigger buttons it would feel good to type on.
In the review he basically said the keyboard was fine, just not the best out there. My impression is that the keyboard is adequate, though not ideal.

Definitely... and though also goes on to say that it is hard to find keys at times and so on, but once you get used to it, it won't be any hassle. It won't match up to Touch Pro's keyboard, but i think it would be pretty good.
"Regrettably, the flat keys. You are constantly with your nails looking for the edges of the keys. Walloons fl on the keyboard is more common than you think. You look regularly to the keyboard to determine where your next button is located. The space between the keys X1 is not sufficient in helping you find the keys. The pressure response is also lower than the Touch Pro. As you have not always good or key is pressed. Touch Pro also has more slope in the keys so you better know where you should be. The number of features that you can reach via the keyboard is less than the Pro. The X1 has no directional buttons and no direct keys for SMS, MMS, or mail. If you or CAPS FN enable you see this on the screen and not through two lights just above the keyboard."
That doesn't sound "fine" to me, that sounds ****ty if you always have to look at the keyboard to know where the next key is.

with time and practice, we'll know.
" The keyboard is good, but we have seen better."
Thats after all the criticisms, so sounds like a final summation to me, and hence why it seems adequate.
A few vids from MR with the panels in action
Looks fine, too bad the panels are nothing to write home about at the present time. Looks like we'll all be using Manilla on this thing for the foreseeable future...

Thanks... hopefully we'll see more vidz soon.
Did he confirm if this is a prototype version or a final one?
I agree, the default panels are pretty basic - if you ask me - but given Xperia's hardware and the Panel SDK, there is a lot of potential over here. (thus why i am in favor of Panels over TF3D)
He has confirmed it was the final release.
Agreed on the panels front, but for now its clearly inferior to running Manilla on this phone.
Inspite of everything else I think that this is the next phone for me. Although it may be lacking at the beginning it has huge potential and I think we will only see it once third party devs start taking an interest in this phone. And let's be honest here most non-diamond WinMo phones have now got Manila variants which people are choosing to use over the default (Even on Omnia )
The spec (esp. screen) and build have enough potential for me. Size of the fonts is not an issue and whichever phone I got Spb Shell was always gonna be an option
I am also realising that I may also need a hardware keyboard as opposed to a virtual one - not a fan of the Touch Pro/Diamond (although again I think it will be great eventually once the kinks have been ironed out). We'll see - I get a feeling that it will be on Orange eventually (end of month????)

I agree with what you said. Xperia's initial panels may fail to impress, but it'll boast the best hardware in the market at the moment for a WinMo device. It definitely has a lot of potential.
Furthermore Manila 2D may be something i might be looking it, but once Touch HD comes out - same resolution - there is chance of TF3D being copied over onto Xperia as well which will definitely be able to take it on with its specs.
Touch Pro is the best alternative there is to Xperia at the moment, but in my opinion Xperia is better - more RAM, customizability (panels), higher resolution, better video recording capabilities...

I don't understand what's all this stuff about small fonts.
First of all, WM has the ability to change font size and developers can decide the size of their displays I don't see where is the problem
Second, I had said this before, for the same font size Xperia beats every other phone hands down in sharpness and detail.
Xperia has the highest density of pixels per sq inch. producing extreme detail and sharpness
Xperia 100000 pixels per sq inch
Diamond 86000
Touch HD 60000
iPhone 27000
Omnia 21000

Cool! I was actually wondering about font size customizability... but since i don't know much about Windows Mobiles in depth (this'll be my first WinMo device, so you could call me a newbie) i didn't wanna sound stupid by asking...

Go Ahead.. Hate Me baby!

I know you'll hate me.. so hate away!
i bought 2 x X1's A Touch Hd... and an Omnia too...
Trying to get one of the Korean Omnia's at moment too...
So far.. got the TF3d on the x1's.. and managed just to get the Sony Panel kinda running on the Touch HD too.. I will tidy it up.. so i can choose what i want on what.
Well at least you will be able to say which device you like the most and why
They are all yours? How many money did you spend?

Good.
I returned an Omnia because it was too small (easy to drop), too slow, and it had lots of crackling noise during calls.
No such problems on the HD.
Easy guys...
I did spend alot of lolly.. all sim free.. and nearing the 2k mark..
I do have more money than sense... but i got peed off with all the.. coming soon.. nearly.. we are going to stock it.. and no-one could actually answer some really straight questions..
Does it support Line 1 and Line 2
How quick is GPS lock
How usable in the hand is it.
What is lacking...
so on.. so forth
So i bought them ..and i'll pick and keep the best.. and offload the others i don't want
I initially thought.. 2 x1's.. one for me.. one for mrs
then she liked Omnia.. so.. thats that
then the HD... larger screen... blah blah
(i've found the Touch HD is just thin... but.. it lacks a DPAD.. and the size of fonts and menus as default are pretty much for the blind! there seems no point at general use to have all those pixels.. and set it up to use your big stump/club of a finger.)
May aswell just get a 6500 super big stupid thing,, and set the font up.
The X1 is a good phone. easily pees over the Touch Pro i had.
trumps it in every way.. which is really silly considering they could have tweaked it.. re-shaped (like Touch diamond is on T-mobile) and sold it as a Touch HD Pro. job done
I've got Touch Flo 3d on the X1.. and they run sweet!
i've managed to wedge the Sony Panels onto the HD.. but it totally runs first run .. panel view.. jiggling around panels... fish .. google... spb... x1.... sony panel...... but not after a reboot.... needs alot more work to make it solid.
i asked for help... thinking everyone would love to have the X1 front screen running on the HD... but not one person is assiting me.. so i will do it as i can
omnia from Korea.. i/collegue may have a trip due in the next few weeks.. so may just walk in.. and buy one.. and bring it back
Personally...
The X1.. i think takes the cake.. over the HD... but i will say.. i'd be very tempted with the korean omnia.
Touch HD spec... but in a samsung solid case.. and a camera that is better than the turd on the HD. I have managed to get the Sony Xperia cam app working on the HD also... bit better.. but pic is still not brilliant..and don't forget.. no camera
enough rant.

Don't dismiss that too easily. Bigger screen means everything to some of us, even more than GPS, camera, 3G, etc.

A D-PAD just takes up valuable screen real estate for me. I have no use for a D-PAD. I suppose if you're trying to play shooters that would be a problem
The font sizes are customizable, and should never factor into whether you are going to buy a smaller or larger screen phone.
A stylus is essential for maximum productivity, instead of big stumps. Luckily, the HD stylus doesn't require prying it out with your fingernails to remove it.

A minimum screen size of 3.5"is a requirement for me. Small screens strain eyes and make blunt fingers seem even blunter. Low-res but large screens prevent web pages and emails from displaying well.
The HD is the first WinMo GSM phone in 1.5 years to have a 3.5" screen and VGA or higher resolution, without being too thick or large to fit in a small pocket. This is because it uses the space wisely, instead of cramming D-Pads and keyboards onto it.

The HD's camera is worthless, but I don't buy phones to use them as cameras, even occasionally. Only if there was a once-in-a-lifetime chance and I had to capture something or lose it, would I consider using a phone camera. Otherwise I'll use D-SLR.

I've ordered a Touch HD. I've been dealing with GPS lag on my TOuch Pro since day 1...its when you are further ahead than where the gps is reporting you to be by 3-5 seconds.
Can you report if the Touch HD has GPS lag or not..and what gps applications you tested? I've herd Google so far is the only one that lags on the HD.

I answered that in a topic about it... The HD supports Line 1 and 2, the Omnia with Orange software does not. With generic software, it does though. Not too strange, right?
Indeed... I have read the comments...
I like the touch HD.. its a good attempt. Poor is the fact that with a little layout change.. the bottom 4 buttons could easily have had the X1/omnia type optical pad put on aswell.
Therefore.. you;d have a control for volume/up and down.. and skip forward and back when in coreplayer/mediaplayer.. seeing as it is very much penned as a media/internet/3g work/play horse / Iphone direct competitor.
I think the HD would be better if i could get a rom stripped of the large menu's everywhere... and get it to run as a PDA and then add large menu's/enable/disable.. and even better.. if you choose a layout that needs finger use.. or if your current layout warrants stylus
As for the Spec of X1 and HD being same... give or take a bit of ram ..i was on about internal goods.
Keyboard..i'm used to the TYTN II size... so.. moving to a more compact one.. has caught me out a few times...
But.. i for one.. did like the X1 panels.... i think it's thinking out of the box... (SE could easily have taken the TF3d...and re-skinned it.. but didn't)
I have done a proof of concept... that makes the X1 Panels (kinda) work on a HD
Anyways...
I got the panels kinda working...
It's only a proof of concept.. and after a reboot.. i cannot access them.. something freaky going on....
It shows it working. and quicker than the X1... just slightly.. but quicker.. All panels have been tried.. and work.. fish.. google... sony.. live (new panel from SE...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443723
have a look... I think they look 100 times better than TF3d.

It's a misconception that a phone NEEDS any UI hardware buttons at all. We can pretend that the iPhone is crap all we want but it demonstrates how to make a good interface. Imagine putting a DPad on there... The screen would be little over half the size making it uncontrollable, and yes, then you suddenly would require a DPad or a stylus to navigate it, because your "big stump/club of a finger" certainly wouldn't cut it.
For the blind? On so many winmo phones I need a freaking stylus to find a contact, which is stupid. I've never seen a Blackberry or an iPhone require a stylus to find a contact... or for anything at all for that matter... Thank goodness they now feature devices with huge screens and great UI's so that I can use my big, clumsy stumps of fingers to GET WORK DONE

What do you mean with a bit better? Is the camera application better, as in does it have better features? Because certainly the camera application does not make your picture any more "brilliant"... The picture is a direct feed from the sensor which you can manipulate but you can't make the quality any better.
"Touch HD spec" is a little more than just hardware, and even that just doesn't match with the samsung... Why would anybody buy a phone because of specs alone? Any good smartphone has GPS, WIFI, fast processor, 3.5G, what not. Care. The silly Omnia interface versus the HD's touch flo for "blind people"? I'd take the HD every time.

I totally disagree.. The Pad i am talking about is the 10mm x 8mm high square pad found on the omnia and X1. the simple touch sensative pad... not the rocker around it. Samsung have done it fine.. and if the 4 keys were spaced...this would have been perfect nested inbetween...
just out of interest.. how do you skip forward on a video you are playing in Coreplayer?
oh.. you drop to windowed view.. then skip forward.. and replay.. well.. thats crap. the x1.. i just swipe over the square pad side to side for forward and back.. and up and down for volume. T.I.D.Y!

I agree.. but this should be a choice!... EVERYONE on here , wants to alter or change the standard form shipped by HTC, To make it more usable for each person.
That is what this whole place is about..
Taking what HTC have.. and make it different for differnt people.
I like the big ease factor buttons..and menus.. but maybe some would like a more tidy.. more informative display and they would rather use a stylus at times.

Oh the HD2 is brilliant.
Some would see Windows Mobile as a let down, I'd disagree. It's an easy platform to develop for, should you come across an application you can't find. The HD2's huge screen with huge resolution is brilliant for... well everything. It's hardware means you get top-performance from whatever you do. HTCs Sense UI is also just a god-send, the best mobile interface I've come across.
Anything that's 'just not right' about it will have no doubt been 'fixed' by somebody here on XDA.

Hi xxDoggyxx,
As a previous X1 owner, I did have reservations about going from a seemingly small device with a hardware keyboard to a big screened touch only device.
I can safely say, I am more than happy with the upgrade! The X1 was a good phone (had its build faults, etc) but the fluidness and ease of use, coupled with the bigger screen makes it worthwhile.
Pros:
- Bigger easier to read screen (even though I have great eyesight, sometimes I did find myself straining to see the X1 details)
- On-screen keyboard (this was a potential no-go for me) it took me less than a week to get used to it from a hardware keyboard (I had one on my last 3 handsets). The haptic feedback seems to really help, but that is an opinion based comment!
- Fluid menus - The SenseUI has actually made me take a step back from SPB's Shell (had the X1 SPB panel) and for most users, it is pretty much there. (There are a few bugs, but it is a complex system)
- Reception - phone reception has been almost double the strength of my X1 in most of the situations I've tested (one of which is my girlfriend's house, which acts like a Faradays Cage to most phones!)
- Facebook/YouTube/Twitter integration - I never really used Twitter that much, nor uploaded any photos to Facebook, but now I actually have decent programs to do it with, its changed my usage pattern totally.
- iPhone comparison - My X1 never really interested my 'iPhone fanboi' mates (I loved it) but a lot of them seem to be jealous now!
- Sat-Nav - I used my X1 all the time as a Sat-Nav device, but with the much bigger screen, the HD2 is a much superior device in this instance.
- Rave reviews - I read the best part of 20 reviews before I upgraded, and most of them only mentioned one or two bad points (pink tinge in camera - solved with update, and windows being the OS - its an opinion whether you like it or not)
Bad points:
- The bigger screen - it may be too big for some, sometimes I've noticed I need to shuffle it around my hand to get to some places, when using it with a single hand. I must admit, watch a few DVD 'rips' on it and the screen is forgiven!
- Little niggles - like not being able to send images via bluetooth (via the Album) - taking a while to be able to type a text reply if you have a lot in your inbox (this is understandable as there is a lot to it!)
- Cost - but there again, when has the bleeding edge of mobile handsets even been cheap?
- Hardware issues - You may come across lots of people complaining on this forum about hardware quality, but then how many people have posted saying it is a fantastic device? Most people only 'pipe up' to complain, not to compliment. I for one are one of the latter.
Haven't really used the Camcorder app, but i'll see what I can find out.
There's 3 resolutions you can record at, VGA (640x480) being the max. They all seem to be 4:3.
Can't find any information on the FPS.
TO: RP-X1.
What does it means by: :"watch a few DVD 'rips' on it and the screen is forgiven!"
sorry, my english... And: "unable to sent picture via bluetooth in the album". i understand that there is a application called album, which view your picture easily. But, i still can bluetooth songs and picture at file explorer right?
TO: RJackson.
With my knowledge of camera... LOL ... The HD2 is not "HD" it does not record "HD" video 4:3 is very very very small. if you view on a 42" LCD tv, you cannot see anything unless you stretch it. UNLESS... ... it is 4:3 @ 720fps [check with me again]
RP-X1 and RJackson, Anyway. thanks for the information... HD2 not "HD". a bit disappointed....

Hi, sorry!
DVD 'rips' are copies of DVD recordings so I can watch them on the HD2. The quality of the screen and hardware make it a pleasure to watch films on it.
Yes, you can send images and audio files via bluetooth in the File Explorer. The Album program is great for looking at pictures and videos, but they seem to have missed the bluetooth sending option out.
Unfortunately, I do agree with the HD2 not being 'HD', but there are many technical issues with HD imagery. The HD2 has a much higher resolution than most other mobile devices, so I can see where HTC have made the HD connection.
actually, not to say that HD2 "sux", but the fact that the screen is really "small". the specification says that the screen is 4.3" (WOW) but it is only 480x680? Seriously, i am very very shocked. X1 screen is smaller yet higher resolution...
If you still had the xperia at hand, mind trying one simple thing to do.
Get the same video, place it at your xperia and HD2. view both at once. does xperia looks clearer? do not compare their ratio aspect. Thanks

They are the same resolution, 800 x 480.
The bigger screen makes things a lot easier to navigate (no need for stylus) and you don't need to struggle to watch things on it (some videos I played on the X1 were hard to watch, especially dark ones).
I can't deny there will be a 'quality' difference as the pixels will be bigger, but you don't notice the images going 'blocky' when viewing on an HD2, well I don't anyway.
I find it easier and more comfortable to watch videos on the HD2, for others they may prefer a smaller screen.
No, you don't understand.
The screen is 800x480, de facto it is the maximum for WinMo, as on your Xperia.
But the video recording is 640x480.
The screen is beautiful and huge, so don't worry about that part.

Best response imho... I also moved from the X1 to the HD2 and just dont regret it at all... I agree with all the things said by Rp-X1 above, but would also point out that the lack of a hardware keyboard was my biggest worry as I do a lot of typing on my phone and after almost a week I am so used to the HD2 on screen keyboard (using touchpal so I can also type in Chinese) its just awesome... HD2 is better than the X1 in nearly all respects I can think of at the moment... with more playing I expect it to only get better...

The X1 was a nice device, but the rather small screen (compared to the other 2 devices) and rather slow performance was the reason to switch to the Touch HD. I have to say it was a very good decision. The whole usability changes with the bigger screen - although it wasn't much faster ... But than the HD2 was announced and I sold my Touch HD. And what can I say: With the HD2 I finally got the perfect device. It feels like a whole device, not tinkered like the X1 or Touch HD - BUT you still have the ability to customize it like X1 or Touch HD. The whole TouchFLO (Sense/Manila - w/e you want to cal it) makes much more sense with the HD2 and the nice speed and stability.
However, there are some downside too ... My HD2 has dust under the screen, other users experience problems with their touchscreen responsiveness and so on ... check the forum for those problems.
I can only agree to all the pros already mentioned about the HD2 vs. Xperia X1.
The HD2 outperforms the Xperia X1 by all meanings.
The only thing you might miss is the hardware keyboard.
However, for me personally, the full power of HD2 was only unleashed thanks
to the Custom ROMs which you can get here in the forum. They complete the
device to a degree which one would love to see out of the box.
Thanks to the community here, I was already able to upgrade my Xperia X1
with the HTC Manila user interface; upgrading to the HD2 was a kind of the
logical next step for me. I don´t regret that purchase for any second.
Whenever I grab my still existing Xperia X1 (or any other device, for that
matter) to compare, I can see and feel a difference like day and night.
At the end of the day, it is always an individual decision to purchase anything.
It is always a mandatory step to touch and feel the product(s) of your choice
at a dealer - whatever other users say may not apply to you.
Thanks for all the comment... Perhaps I will get HD2 by next week. Already sold my x1 Lol.
Btw, whats in the box of HD2? I don't want to get scam by the shop. Thanks
also moved from X1 to HD2..
no disappointment at all!!
great device.. btw.. I still got my X1.. when I use it again my X1 feels soooo slow

640x480 is HD2 screen resolution? surprised. X1 was 480x800... LOL. anyway, it doesn't matter.
Do you know the Fps for recording video?
and:
Mind telling me the maximum screen ratio aspect. is there 16:9? or just 4:3?
thanks sorry if i ask too much question...

x1 display is 800x480
hd2 display is 800x480
x1 can record 640x480 , 640x400(wide) and smaller
hd2 can record 640x480 , and other smaller 4:3 sizes
thanks for the answers. I'm currently also considering a switch from the x1 to the hd2.
Did you (or could you pls) try out if the headphones with the integrated microphone also work on the hd2?
Thanks!

(Apologies for the low quality photos)
It would be nice if you describe display quality - viewing angles, panel type (is it IPS) how it performs in sunlight. Is minimum brightness good for reading in dark conditions? Thanks!

Viewing angles are a subjective issue, personally when i pick up my mobile device and look into it, it's always straight in front of me, so that's all i want, but if you have a viewing angle of over 45 degrees like the Tab, all you get is people on the bus, train or plane looking sideways to see what you're looking at
I'm based in England at the moment, they don't have that much sunlight and even less direct sunlight
First impressions, it feels to plasticky, not like it's price suggests that it should, not as bad as an X10, but almost.

How is the call quality/ease of use.. Does the tab "feel" swift?
Hello guys,
Thanks for the initial question. I will cover this question in the video review.
I need more points of focus for the review.

Like if you have had chance to use the ipad, maybe like how does it compare value wise? As I think how much it costs £599 is putting me off, but if it is worth it compared to other tablets then I would consider it more

Wouldn't know about call quality as it's only owned by an engineer that comes into our office, he doesn't have any problems as far as i've heard, but as with other threads here just don't expect it to fit into you jacket or trouser pocket, one it's to big and another it's to heavy to be comfortable.
You may have visited the dell streak forum, or heard of how fragile the dell streak lcd screen is? because of it's large size the body flexes but LCD's by their very nature cannot flex and they snap. Well just look at the size of the LCD on the Tab, and the body of the Tab is made of plastic and (not titanium as per streak) to save weight, this by it's very design will make it more suceptible to breakage, (the body will flex under pressure the LCD will not) = ££££££

Well the ipad and the Tab are two completely different entities, one is a bookreader trying to be a netbook pc, the others a smartphone with obesity problems. They shouldn't be compared IMO.

Similar to all owners i would think! why did samsung insist on utilising such a large bezel around the screen? therebye turning a 7' screen device into one more akin to a 10' without any benefits of a 10'?, and adding nothing to the looks of the device at the same time.

Lol yeah I get the point, what I was more curious was in relation to the size, like is 7" too small to get a full web experience? Is it too big to carry round yet too small to use around the home? etc

No, because the 5" dell streak isn't to small for that!

As in other posts! you will not carry this around on your pocket, unless you want to break it! You might try a large overcoat with a very wide collar, if the pockets big enough and you want to look like the FBI everywhere you go.

Thanks for trolling another thread entirely off the rails.
To the OP:
A few things that I'd like to see discussed. Firstly how does it feel to type on it ? I've seen in a few first-impression pieces that it feels good (like a galaxy S in landscape) but it'd be great to get the feelings of a regular user. Also, some shots of the keyboard in action would be nice.
Secondly, can you toss some 720p video on there and show us how it looks. It never looks the same in video as in person, but it'd give us an idea of how the screen does as far as contrast and colour vibrancy is concerned.
Finally, how does the device feel to you ? Does it feel to you like you could carry it in a pocket all day ? Does it meet your expectations for speed/ease of use ?
GL with the video, hope to see it soon!
It is maybe off topic, but ... here goes :
- What release of Android is running ? Same as the one on Galaxy S device ?
- Does this android release supports multiple Exchange sync accounts (like HTC Desire & Desire Z do) ?
- Does it have 2 SIM card slots ? (saw that somewhere, don't remember ... where). If so, is it one for voice plan, second one for data plan ?
- Does it come with a USB host port (or the hw to take care of it) ?
Thanks.
Does it play 1080p files (mkv & flash) or does i only output 1080p..?
I got my hands on this last week to try out for a good half hour, and i loved it. The size was great, and great to watch movies on.
Looking forward to it. Release in Norway is 21. okt )
could it be confirmed if the Tab is going to require Kies in the same way as the Galaxy phones, e.g. for firmware updates
i assume that there will be no difference between this and their phones, but as Kies is software that i truly dislike, i am living in hope that it does not.

Yes, it is confirmed by Samsung already. In their official site, it says in the "PC connectivity" section "KIES". Sorry. I know, I hate that application with a passion myself...
If you have time, it would probably interest many people if you'd manage to try some popular apps from the market and see how they act with the increased resolution. We all probably have out own top10 lists for software, but I think browsing appbrain for most popular and trying a few of them would give people some idea how far that compatibility is.
(I, personally, would love to see how WidgetLocker, Beautiful Widgets and Launcher Pro work on that, but unfortunately at least the first two ain't free.
But more generally, how do widgets work on that screen? What I've gathered from the pictures is that the Tab has a FIVE column display (instead of the traditional 4) on the homescreen. How do widgets work with that? does a 4x4 widget scale to full size, or does it live a "column" free. Also, how many rows does the screen have?
EDIT: oookay, I don't know why these two posts became separate, this was supposed to be an edit to that earlier...
Actually thats a good idea.
I even forget that widget locket etc are even apps these days! But yes that'd be good to see if they scale up or still work properly on the big screen.
I imagine beutiful widget and switchpro you could make them bigger with launcherpro+ if they won't scale up by themselves, same with any other widgets, but it'd be good if they did it for free! However I think the 'grid' on the Tab is bigger anyway, so 4x2 widget would cover more space, but then it appears to have more rows too, so they might still appear small
Anyways, if you have any paid for apps on your main smartphone, you should be able to put the same market account on the Tab and download them again, so that's one way around paying twice just to demo them.
A few things I'd like to see:
- Spotify in action if possible.
- Proper comics and hos they scale to the screen and if it's easy or hard to read them (The Walking Dead for example.)
- A bit more on reading eBooks in different lights.
- In-depth look at the calendar and how flexible it is.
- If possible, how the accessories (like the keyboard) work.
- How it handles different resolutions of video.
Thank you for accepting suggestions!
