HTC Desire HD or wait wait for the glacier? - Desire HD General

My phone is due for upgrade at the end of the month. Ever since it was announced i have had my heart set on a Desire HD and planned to upgrade to this as soon as it was released.
A spanner was thrown into the works today when I bumped into some articles dating back to May about the glacier. The spec looks a huge leap ahead of the desire hd but I could not find any recent references to this device at all.
Does anyone know anything about this device? The reports from may say the launch was planned for end of 2010 and that it has the dual core snapdragon. That is all I can find.
Cheers
Tim

Qualcomm began sampling the dual-core Snapdragon back in early June, promising both 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz versions. There’s no telling which the HTC Glacier might be running – doing some basic sums on the difference between the single-core 1GHz phones leaves the mysterious HTC falling somewhere in-between – but Qualcomm has said that the first devices to use the updated chips could be on the market before the year is out.
This was just my views about the Desire HD using the evo lcd screen to get the phone out quicker to make way for the new dual core. Around December/January time there we be a new phone from HTC Im sure.

That being said you can wait forever and then 3 months down the line there's a new better phone and so it goes on, Im just going to get the Desire HD and then sell it on for the next model if its good enough and I like it, enjoy whats out now and upgrade later...

You're basically in between the generation gap.
The Glacier will be announced officially in November (around the 5th), but there's no telling when it will be available to the masses (retail).
The question is rather: what are your uses for the smartphone, and do you really need the extra power. Unless you're a dev (especially working on native/multithread apps), you won't be needing the extra HP.

You will have to take my word for now. I can't disclose my source.

Any idea how much it will cost, I don't want to pay £470 for the DHD and find out that next month a better phone is announced for the same price. I wouldn't mind if it was next year some time but it's less than a month if you say 5th November announcement.

My god, you guys;/
There will always be a new phone comming out every couple of months, you will be waiting forever))
If i was you i would get this "great" phone, then in a year from now sell it and add about 150 -200 to get the newest phone out.. and you can keep doing this every year!
If your always waiting for the newest release, you will be waiting all your life!
Next year, samsung are supposedly gonna go into overdrive on AMOLED and S-AMOLED production, so all top of the range phones from next year will be SAMOLED and of the dual core chipset.. I will sell my HD around June next year for around 250-300 and just add 150 and get the new beast...

from what i've been reading, the Glacier will be released for T-Mobile US. In other words the 3G won't work here in Europe. I don't think HTC intend for that phone to be in the European market so i think you should forget about it and get the DHD.

You can always wait.

HD3!?

Is this true, if it is... someones gonna get a hurt real bad.
HTC HD3
I just got the HD2 and says it might be coming out in November.
if it is true we wont get it in the US till next year. That is how it has been historically form htc. ie touch pro , touch pro 2, diamond, diamond 2, HD(blackstone) and HD2 were all released in Europe/Asia first then the US gets a dumb down version in a sense. We in the US are just starting to get some video calling support where as asia and europe have had it for years.

Actually, in this case... for HTC... our model of the HD2 is considerably upgraded compared to the EURO version.
But yes, historically... that was the FIRST time that an exception was made for the United States models.
Those are the same rumored specs from months ago. Windows Phone 7 doen not support that resolution, 1280x720 or whatever it is. These rumors are based off of someones "dream phone" specs that were made up. Someone then took them as fact and these specs have been showing up as the rumored HD3 since.

considerably? i hardly think double the rom (yes, thats the only difference) counts as "consideably"
add to that the radios that brick tmous phones but not euro, and id say the tmous is worse.
i certainly wouldn't swap my safe euro leo for a brickable tmous just for the extra rom. not a chance.
if i were a tmous user, id hate tmous for making the hd2 easier to brick and unable to take all the roms.
If you go back to their source site, they list the processor as being, a "1.5 GB" snapdragon.
Doubt this is legitimate. Especially considering that MS is moving to WinMo 7, which means no more 6.5. WinMo 7 has pretty specific tech spec requirements.

As far as the specs of the phone not sure if its real or not. (Do we really want an even bigger screen? 4.5 ) But we all knew WP7 was coming at the end of the year and they would have an awesome phone to launch it on. And with the rate that new "super phones" are coming out you just have to pick one and stay with it and not worry about what might be coming out in 5 months.

By now I would think everyone would be use to speed in which new phones come out. Its like with computers you are going to be spending a lot of money to stay on the bleeding edge of tech.
I say its a fake. I doubt if HTC would launch a device with a new a OS called the HD3.
their choice of words on the site is horribly wrong as well. Its Windows Phone 7. The mobile version is dead. Windows embedded is what will continue along side Windows Phone 7.

You see where this is going

[DISCUSSION]Now that the Desire Z is repeatedly delayed, are you considering waiting?

And by that I mean, Christmas is right around the corner and though I don't celebrate it cool new phones usually come around this time. Especially now that Gingerbread is getting closer.
Plus there's that rumor about Nexus Two. Developer support+assured updates would be fantastic, though I'm still not sure just how useful it'll be without a keyboard (who needs Tegra 2 or whatever when you can only use it to play casual games?! Only other use I can think of would be 1080p streaming/output)
However, the G2/Desire Z looks like a fantastic phone and most people who are 'serious users' and did not receive a defective unit agree on this point.
So... are you going to wait?
We can safely assume, that most of the people waiting for Desire Z will not switch away to other phone. You must realize who are the people who preordered Desire Z - they are the ones who require a physical keyboard. And considering that so far there are only 2 phones in EU having physical keyboard (G1/Dream and Motorola Milestone) and only other 2 are announced/going to be released (HTC Desire Z and Motorola Milestone 2), there is no other option, only waiting.
And the chance of new phones till Christmas are pretty slim. Maybe something from Samsung, maybe Motorola will finally release the Milestone 2, but that's it.
Tegra, dual cores - for phones that's next year, end of next year. Yeah, you will see Tegra tablets in H1/2011, but that is 2011.

How about waiting for something like this for those of you willing to settle with SwiftKey/Swype?
But then again, Sony Ericsson ...
Edit: also, assuming the specs are correct we should be able to 'port' the games to the Desire Z's itty-bitty buttons.
Are you serious Pickx ? That ?
And because it's Sony Ericsson, it's going to be released on Q1/2012 and going to have Android 2.2.

I'm just seeing what other people think, since I certainly don't have the ability to get a new phone every 9 months.

It's not that there are real alternatives, are there?
So before speculating on the announcement of a not-yet-existing phone (and then again waiting for its delivery) I'll happily stick with my preorder. In three weeks (the latest) we wont look into this thread anymore and start to keep ourselves busy with real stuff again.
The original launch date from htc was late october or november (fourth qt 2010)

I've been waiting a couple of years so I think I can wait another few weeks or months. I still use Tytn. I missed Touch Pro 2, I didn't need new phone then. And when I decided I need one, I thought that TP2 is too old to buy and I can as well wait for something new with keyboard.

Interesting article.
It would make sense that Sprint would make an effort to update EVO's to 2.3 as soon as possible. As someone else already mentioned, this is definitely their flagship device. Though the Samsung Epic is also a 4G phone, it has not been marketed nearly as much as the EVO.
This is pure speculation on my part, but it would seem to be in their best short-term interests to continue to develop for the EVO, as it has hardware that is very capable, and 2.3 would only make the device that much more appealing. It may be cheaper to develop for existing, familiar (and not very old) hardware than to develop for new hardware. I could be wrong.
I can already hear the commercials: "the EVO, now faster than ever..."
Yeah, I hope they push out 2.3, even if it has old sense.

Well, there's the Thunderbolt just around the corner, but from what is known at the moment, it's not that different from the Desire HD...

If you find yourself unsatisfied with what the DHD offers, I suggest waiting. I don't know what will be coming out after the Thunderbolt but naturally there will be more.
If you keep waiting for the next big thing, you will end up just waiting. For a long time. It's a good way to go crazy.

Dual core phones are about to be released by at least other manufacturers. Worth waiting a little more unless you really need to buy now.
In the worst case if you wait and find nothing of interest the price of current phones will drop.

Yes but there is a difference between waiting for a major release (dual cores) vs the usual releases (smaller insignificant upgrades).
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I am not convinced that dual cores will have such a huge impact on a phones performance. I think its a marketing ploy to get people to buy new phones. Mostly, anyways.

Whatever you buy, the next day it will be old fashioned.
example.. 3D TV with glasses is old tech as the latest is 3d without the needf for wearing special glasses.
The day after iphone 3 released, iphone 4 was in pipeline.
So buy what you want now that will do everything you require, only wait if you want a phone that does something no other phone in todays market will do.
As for dual core, except for business use, there is no point, unless it makes tea when the alarm goes off.
Fully agree with malex1.
Plus, even if dual cores are the next major upgrade in smartphone technology it ain't gona be nowhere near cheap that's for sure. A Desire HD is expensive as it is...

That's what people told me when ages ago, my dad got 1 of the first Pentium IV 500Mhz pc's.......and look at it now
To be honest, I waited for the DHD....otherwise I would have had to buy the SGS or I4.
I knew the DHD was just a matter of time before it would be released and as my contract was expiring in that same range, I decided to wait and hope the DHD was released sooner rather than later.
If I had to choose now, I probably would try to find out if the thunderbolt was going to be released within 1-3 months, if not, get the DHD.
Imo you should wait 2-3 days because Thunderbolt will be unveiled at CES on 6 january and then see what you will gonna buy.
Yes, waiting AFTER the CES would already give you a better idea of what's just around the corner. And it's only a few days' wait

But why wait mwc is round the corner .... HTC always announce phones a mwc... but then they always announce in September ... and sometimes in October.

I get your point and I agree, if you wait for better, you wait forever, but if he's about to take a decision, and CES starts in 2 days and he seems unsure, why not wait 4-5 days and make a decision based on more (and better) information. It's really just a matter of waiting for next week. MWC is in a month.
Then again, for me it wouldn't change a thing, because no matter what's announced at CES (or MWC or whatever), Canada always gets it 6 months + late Here, the Desire HD IS the next big thing around the corner (late January at Telus)...
Hi,
As you're interested in the DHD, I assume you're in Europe rather than the US? The Thunderbolt looks like the replacement for the US only HTC Evo 4G (the Thunderbolt being a DHD with US 4G internals) - so it will be US only.
I was interested in the standard Desire in the middle of 2010 but preferred the looks of the US Evo - then heard the rumour of the HTC Ace (which was the codename for the DHD). I decide the wait and got the DHD when it came out months later.
If you get the DHD now, I reckon it's going to be mid 2011 at the earliest before HTC bring out a new top of the range Android phone for the European market - and you'll hear rumours long before it becomes available - with the promise of press-junkets etc for the media.
Go for it now.

Hopefully 2.3 or 2.4 with Sense coming soon;

On engaged it shows what HTC has announced and they either have 2.2 2.3 or 2.4 all with sense, and their "Facebook" phones have the new sense with 2.3.3 and it definitely looks like the Evo could run it as the Facebook phone and wildfire s only have 600mhz, granted its the new process and such, but we should be about on par.
The new phones are a disappointment to me, with last year specs pretty much. Just the new 1ghz processors and 768mb RAM. Here's to hoping CTIA has something...

+1 on CTIA hopes. HTC also had the weakest tablet compared to the other major manufacturers. CTIA or better luck next year.

so far haven't seen a single thing at MWC that sprint would be getting....
Guess CTIA is our last hope of something phone wise being announced for this year unfortunately. Cant believe HTC showed a Incredible S and Desire S yet nothing to go with above Evo in terms of specs and be on Sprints CDMA
I just hope we get a 2.3 or 2.4 update for our Evo since nothing good was really announced HTC wise.

Problem is some of the new HTC phones are being released with Froyo. The tablet dont even have Honeycomb! I love my evo but we might have to rely on the great Team Win for our upgrade needs. ;p

I don't see why everyone is so down. First, new devices do not have to be announced at conferences. They can put together their own event any time they want. Second, there's a high probability that the Evo's successor will in fact be announced at CTIA. That's when the Evo was announced. And finally, it's not necessarily a bad thing that the new device isn't announced yet. It might mean we get a dual core processor or something else really cool that just isn't ready yet. The Incredible S has a second generation, single core, 1GHz Snapdragon. It's certainly better than what's in the Evo, but I'd gladly wait until the summer if it means I get dual core, and maybe even Ice Cream out of the box.
Cept sprint just announced no more yearly upgrades. Only 22 month upgrades and 1 year if your gold premier

Actually there are yearly upgrades you just don't get the full discount price like you did before.

I heard a rumor that we are on the calendar to get it in August 2011. wether it's true or not, who knows.
I think the evo will be seeing a 2.4, and that will be the last official update. =(

+1.........
Darn, I was kind of hoping to hang on to my evo for more then just a couple years. It would be nice to see more long term support with these new devices, but at the speed that technology advances, it doesnt really suprise me.
I've got my fingers crossed for CTIA, really putting my faith in Sprint for that one.
As for 2.3...we already have roms for it and androidball ported a honeycomb rom to his Evo a few days ago (it's around here somewhere).
So, I think we'll be getting our upgrades. Not sure about non XDA, non rooted peoples...but we sure as hell will
I just hope Sprint announces something big at CTIA next month. Fingers crossed for EVO2 announcement, or at least a high end Galaxy-S-2 w/out keyboard, thank you.
And I would like one of these phones come this June, or I might jump ship to the iPhone5, with 4" screen, dual core, new AMOLED + Retina screen, and totally revised iOS5 adding Widgets and Notifications finally.

hahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha.
if you say so...
I've never seen people that get so bored of devices so damned quickly.
They really market technology well don't they?
"OMGZ EYE HAS 2 HAV DAT NU DEVIS TUDAY"
People really need to calm down about the whole Sprint and new phone thing.
It's going to happen.
-The fact that the lack of an "Evo 2" this summer would just be about the most retarded mistake Sprint could make.
-The practically confirmed, although still a "rumor", dual-core WM7 phone.
-The fact that there "is NO CDMA exclusivity" when it comes to the iphone. [Could sprint be waiting for the 4g capable iphone 5 this summer? I would if I were them, At&t and Verizon already has any person who wants the iPhone 4.]
-The likelihood of Sprint getting a WebOS device, or two
-The Blackberry Playbook
-Any Blackberry phones that will come out, that haven't even been talked about yet
And that's just NON-Android based devices!
You're silly if you think that Sprint won't be getting a plethora of Android devices over the next 6 - 12 months.
Android is the hot ticket.
Thus, Sprint, a company that is finally starting to gain customers and wants to continue to pull itself out of the hole its been in, HAS to be apart of that hot ticket.
There's just no way, no how that, coupled with everything I talked about up there, Sprint won't be getting multiple Android devices.
Relax.
Let's also keep in mind that, as sweet as the Atrix and other devices announced at CES are....NONE ARE EVEN OUT YET.
So, take a deep breath, and relax.
