Hands on review on DHD~ - Desire HD General

A hands on review?
http://tech-reviews.net/?p=3734
Looks yummy~

its clear from the 720p video is normal LCD not SLCD

There's a part 1 as well. The links were floating around here last night. About 25 mins in total of playing around. Most of it is bog standard Android but there's a few nifty things here and there which are worth watching for. Just music by the way - no voice over or anything.

Just a mix up as the Desire HD and Desire Z were announced at the same time.
Desire Hd = EVO LCD Screen
Desire Z = Desire S-LCD Screen
This is one occasion I hope I'm wrong but I dont think I am.
Why do you think that HTC have edited their video and text description after they realised their mistake.

I feel really pathetic for HTC, they had already created such perfect phone, and why do they want to ruin it by using a normal LCD than SLCD? They had rather use SLCD on Desire Z than HD... Sometimes I really wonder what is in their mind...

Yeah i was pretty confident it was LCD, and after watching those videos, im almost 100% sure it's LCD.

They would rather use S-LCD on the Desire Z because its the same screen as the Desire and they have plenty of them, a S-LCD 4.3 inch has never been made so they were lazy and used the 4.3 Evo screen, its all about fast turn over and making money, they are rushing the Desire HD out because of their new flagship with a 1.5ghz or more processor out for Christmas or after the new year..
But nobody knows 100% so we will have to wait and see.

I don't know.. i saw something on the original htc site that it was slcd
but too bad it's normal lcd then.. The phone is great anyways

Yes thats true but you wont find it on there now, its been removed.

There is also a screen comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bt8ScwAPZE&feature=sub
The screen of the Desire HD looks quite white to me, and the normal Desire has a pink color to it ..,
But we will see when we get it
I expect mine arround 22 october.

I agree there, even with a normal LCD screen the phone is still great, lets just hope that the images and 720p are up to scratch and the loud speaker has been improved over the Desire. I can say that the video audio has improved..
I have heard that the pink spot is still on the images and the 720p is no where near that of the galaxy s...
Is there to may bad points to purchase this phone?
Again, time will tell.

I have seen this before but It didn't make me feel any more confident than before.

Looks sluggish
Ok, this is weird... In the video comparison we can clearly see the HD7 (or whatever is between the DHD and the Z) and the iphone scroll really smoothly, while the DHD lags a bit and the Z lags a LOT. What gives? I thought they were supposed to be super-fast?

Android has flash on, others don't.

Fair enough, though a tiny flash would not justify the way the Z behaves. So are you saying that if the page had no flash then the HTC's would be as smooth as the other two?

The 2 part videos were shared before here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8603717&postcount=26
Also Iphone comparision was shared here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8624052&postcount=278

i saw dozens of pictures and videos so far, even websites hands on comments confirmed it is normal LCD like the Evo but when HTC was asked they did confirm its 16.7million colors so that at least is a bump
either way i'm too addicted to the quality of SLCD on my desire now, i will wait for the next round

Its not the same screen as on the Evo, the evo only has 65k while Desire HD has 16 million colors.

Yes, all those flash banners make a huge difference.

Yes but during the London event, HTC press release states 262K display for the Desire HD, they keep changing it and keep giving out different info, nobody knows for sure.

[COMP]HTC Legend Vs HTC Desire (which one ?)

Hello,
I am extremely fascinated with these two new phones by htc but i can't decide which one to buy. I have been watching videos all over the internet and reading the reviews from the MWC and other hands-on from many sites and still i am in dilemma. I LOVE the design of the legend but i want the power of Desire.
The reason i have this thread here is if anyone can tell me what are the differences between the two phones.
First of all i know the differences below, so if they are the ones you know i'd be gratefull if we don't fill the thread with the same ones over and over again.
1) 1Ghz Snapdragon Vs 600mhz MS7227
2) 3.7" Vs 3.2" Screen
3) 576MB Vs 384MB ram
4) Divx out of the box for desire no for legend.
Ok these are the differences i know for sure and i haven't found anything else. I am asking if anyone knows other ones especially if the ones i am gonna mention here are true or just rumors to get the customers buy the desire.
1) I read that the HTC Legend will not get the flashplayer 10.1 like Desire (will it at least have the flash lite like hero ?)
2) The browser used in the desire is the same as in the legend or is it an upgraded and better version of it ???
3) and something unrelated, is the difference in cpu so much of a problem for the legend???
Thanks and i hope someone will give me answers At least until april when i'll buy one of the two!!!
exactly the same boat, want the design of the Legend but with the screen and power of the Desire. Coming from a Touch HD, I don't really want to loose the screen size, think I'm still going for a Legend though, the Desire looks too much like a Touch HD!
Going to go SIM free though this time so I can swap it easily
One more difference between the 2 devices according to this thread is that the Legend will not have live wallpapers like the Desire.
Not much of a deal-breaker for most, I assume.
Regarding Flash 10.1, this article is worth a look.
Regardlesss, I'll be getting one of these for my wife when it releases. She needs a device that can take a beating. I gave her my Touch Diamond a few months ago. It was in near-mint condition at the time but now, the battery cover is scratched and a corner is broken off. I'm hoping the aluminum unibody design can help.
Personally, I'm pretty much set on getting the Desire for the sheer horsepower...
What about video recording mode?
We know the Desire will have HD recording but what about the Legend??
I hope it's not the wacky 320x240 of the Hero

Any links to confirm the HD recording capabilities of the Desire?
This was a rumored feature and ever since the device was announce at MWC, there's been multiple sites saying that it doesn't record video at 720p.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s8500_wave_and_htc_desire_headed_to_tmobile_soon-news-1461.php
http://www.toptechreviews.net/mobil...ve-and-the-htc-desire-on-its-way-to-t-mobile/
This news source is the only one that lets me keep my hopes alive for 720p recording. But then, this isn't a feature that I'm too concerned about...
yes the 720p video recording doesn't really matters so much for me. as for the live wallpapers neither but it would be a nice touch to have. also i think it WILL have live wallpapers, i read somewhere that it has but even if it doesn't since the gpu is the same as the nexus it won't be an issue to port them to the Legend. my main concerns are for performance especially and the internet stuff.
Another question is if they support wifi routering or at least tethering
The Legend is a sexy piece of hardware on the outside.
I will buy the next version once they upgrade the inside more with a Cortex chip instead of a cheapo one
I was very exited for both the Legend and Desire but yesterday when I red the review of GsmArena about the Amoled screen of the Nexus 1...I think I will take a Hero now
Why? Because they said the Amoled screen of N1 and most probably Legend/Desire is unreadable under direct sunlight
As long as I remember the Hero has been well reviewed about this particular detail which is important for me
Even if there is a lot of disaturation in direct sunlight there is no way you can't use the phone. and are you going to watch a movie or do something which takes time while standing in sunshine ??? i guess not
im so confused about which 1 2 get.
i definately want the HTC Legend as i had a Hero and like staying with my own.
but the power of the Desire is amaizing.
I don't understand why there is ANY debate about this at all. The Desire is better than the Legend in every spec. Infact, the Legend doesn't seem to be a big upgrade over the Hero imo, unless I am missing something?
yeah but desire looks like it was chewed, swallowed and digested compared to the legend...i mean desire is not ugly at all,but legend kicks ass....and umm does any of you guys maybe know the price range for any of those?
well according to clove.uk
HTC Desire = 464euro plus 25euro shipping(cyprus fedex)
HTC Legend = 426euro plus shipping
the gap between them is so little that makes me even more confused!!!
Isn't it too soon to have final prices?
The Desire and Legend will be released in mid-April right?
these prices are for preorder!!!
The design of this baby is so full of win, that I am willing to compromise with the specs.

me too....
I like the construction quality. This thing can take one serious beating be fore tossing in the towel. Would be nice to have that with the desire.
i wish the desire would come for cdma. at least the scorpion looks like a sprint phone. i fell like android+HTC will make me upgrade phones every few months. i wonder if i a cell company will do 6 month contracts. lol
i reallly dont care about looks, i have the G1 and thought it was the most beautiful piece of equipment when i got it. i hope the new phones will keep call funtionality
The thing that's confusing me is the price
the desire is only 10 euros up from legend ?

Legend to Desire

Hey all !
i was wondering about selling my legend and buy the htc desire ?
but i thought the htc desire looked pretty big.. ?
but is this a good replacement ?
The desire has better specs but a little lower build quality.
I'd say over all its a great replacement though
On a side note, how much would you be selling your legend for? I'm looking to grab one if its the canadian version
I'm from Faroe Islands (check google or something if you want to know more about it)
im not sure how i could send it to you from here.. :S
and.. i know that the specs are better on the htc desire, but i was thinking about the size.. for me the htc desire looks pretty big, but am i wrong ?

The best comparison I could find is here http://www.omio.com/phones/compare/htc_desire+htc_legend
It seems the desire is just a few millimeters bigger length and width wise, so it shouldn't be a problem at all.
How much are you looking at selling it for? As for the islands your at, I'm really not sure how it would work anyways, international mail or something maybe?

I know this isn't what you asked but...
Have you considered the Nexus One rather than the desire? Same spec but the N1 runs froyo...
On paper the desire/N1 is faster, in reality the gap, as far as I can tell in my research is non existent (although I have heard claims that the legend is much faster due to lower res screen). The legend has less memory however and therefore could run fewer apps at the same time? This has never been a problem for me personally.
Build quality of course is a big change, the N1/Desire feel quite sturdy but the Legend is made of frikkin metal.

just an update, legend should get froyo
BUT
flash 10.1 most likely wont run due to the phones processor, it is not capable of running it, as of now anyways...
however, i'm sure after some time flash may get officially released or the modding community may try and do something about it but thats not something to rely on
desire is actually a reallllly good phone, i say sell the legend and get it!
The legend is hot to look at but like most phones it will get damaged. I had an HTC Hero and using a Desire is great for the bug screen and browsing. That extra half inch has made a good mobile experience great! Gaming wise you probably won't notice a big deal due to the higher resolution. Neocore demo actually was on par and sometimes better than my Desire. The only thing would be the number of apps you could have running at once. Build wise I think the Desire is great, mine is anyway though being machine out of a single block of aluminium certainly gives it a feeling of solidity.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i actually just found out that you can use the htc evo flash 10.1 on the legend running froyo with a small work around and it apparently works near flawlessly so it should take much for a full unhacked version to become released. if not the hack version will do just fine
I have one question about the Nexus One..
if i want trackball light on it, do i need to take in half, and install a LED to it, or is this already done ? so i only need boot the phone to get custom LEDs ?

for the price of a nexus one there are many other phones that can and will do a better job.

anything without a trackball, my curve 8330 has a trackball and it always gets stuck. go with a trackpad or nothing.
the new evo is nice along the the droid x, also the htc incredible is amazing.
maybe even the samsung galaxy s?
there are tons of phones out there that are equal if not better then the nexus, just do a little research for what you like best
i'm still probably going to grab a legend either way though

Any one switching from desire .. Are you happy with screen

Hi, I am using desire & was planning to switch to streak as my main phone .. got the phone looks great but I am returning it for one reason & one reason only ... Screen quality
When compared to desire it looks awful ..I think its the combination of resolution & LCD .. AMOLED has way better colours & contrast but I am surprised as you can see pixels on streak much more easily even when it has same resolution as desire, this could be due to bigger screen .. should have meant better resolution.
Played these two clips on it
youtube com/ watch?v=-zvCUmeoHpw
youtube com/ watch?v=XSGBVzeBUbk
there was much more detail on desire ... Its sad because I thought streak was damn good phone other than screen quality
I think I am screwed now after using desire ... I cant ever see myself using a phone with LCD screen .. & boy if only Samsung Wave had android ... Super AMOLED is just unbelievable .. I wish HTC's upgrade to Desire will have HD recording & playback with Super-Amoled 4+ inch screen.
I am mainly posting this for people considering switching from desire to streak .. Please share your experience .. whats your take
I rarely watch video on my device but I'm hoping the video out on the Streak will provide a decent quality on a screen.

Yes but unfortunately it affects text on screen too .. I have also noticed that automatic brightness is better on desire. Although everything looks bigger, it does not look better

Have you seen the Samsung Galaxy S? Looks kind of like you want! http://pocketnow.com/thought/video-samsung-galaxy-s-vs-htc-evo-software-comparison-part-1
Ive switched over and whilst the brightness and vividness of the desire is a lot better, having, the extra space is a major positive. Also sometimes I thought the image quality on the desire looks very artificial, especially with pictures and video.

Absolutely agree with extra space, If I hadnt used desire & compared the two I would absolutely love it ... I just cant get over how everything looks so much better on AMOLED .. with such a big screen a better resolution would have made this a perfect phone

Yeah I do agree with that! And I don't like the iphone style launcher..
Yeah the Galaxy seems excellent spec wise, same as the iPhone 4 in terms of CPU and GPU I believe but it does feel very cheap. I prefer the rubbery feel of the Desire, that said the Streak also feels a solid bit of kit and as an internet device rather than phone seems a cracking size, roll on Android 2.2!

[Q] Desire or Desire HD?

Hi dear,
I own galaxy s and I like it.
After I saw HTC desire hd, I've changed my mind though.
I'm about to sell my phone and going to get the phone ot desire.
Do you think if I will get desire(not hd), is it too late to get it?
Should I wait for desire hd?
I'm tired of the laggy on galaxy s...
13 days till HD is released, thats nothing honestly.
I've been waiting for months =X
@jorkobe23 The only reason you're considering buying a DHD is because of the lag issues on the SGS? If so, why not wait until the end of the month for the SGS update to 2.2 to see if it fixes the lag issues?
It may save you a lot of money to wait, especially since from your post it seems that other than the lag you're happy with your SGS.
nono,
I love sense ui and I want to have bigger screen.
I heard android froyo is optimized for snappgon cpu not hummingbird.
So many people guess even though froyo will release for galaxy s,
the laggy and gps problem will not be solved.
Idree: Haha,
did you sell your galaxy s?
wait for the DHD, its will be on stock very soon, until the 22th.
dono, for me anyway the SGS is not the real thing, no cm for that device yet, and dono, its made like plastic.

if you want a bigger screen i wouldn't go for the desire because that has a 3.7" screen which is smaller than your current phone, which is 4" the desire hd will have a screen of 4,3"
Desire HD advantages:
- updated graphics GPU (faster 3d games performance)
- bigger screen 4.3 vs 3.7inch
- 8MP camera with real 720p recording vs 5MP and broken 720p
- more RAM and more internal storage (internal is no issue on desire with A2SD+)
- Full aluminum body
- new sense
Desire advantages
- Slimmer, lighter and easier to operate in one hand
- Higher screen density (252dpi vs 233dpi)
- AMOLED or SLCD (Sexier colors and blacks then standard LCD on the HD with better viewing angle)
- semi aluminum frame
- new sense is on the way (either officially or by xda)
i'm personally in love with my dense SLCD screen and slim body, so i wait for the next desire, praying for 4inch version
Haha Thanks for useful information, hamdir.
Hm... I think I should go desire HD cos I heard desire has had multi touch problem, right?

a slight multi touch problem, the desire is dual touch, i'm not facing any issues with games like hero of sparta and emulators
the issue appears with FPS like games for example where you might keep one finger still on the movement buttons and aim with the other
in games like heavy gunner where you have to dual control both left and right guns i faced no issues and i've enjoyed that game
as for the interface no problems, pinch to zoom works perfectly
but yes your right if that is a concern go with the HD (i'm not sure if multi touch is confirmed), the HD is more suited to games anyway because of the much faster GPU
for me i compared the HD2 usage to Desire usage and the size was unfortunatly an issue for me
Ok.. so I'm in the same situation here... and I can't make up my mind between the 2 phones ....
I've read this whole forum and also looked at the 20 best mobile phones at techradar - The original desire is still at number 1.
I like the big screen. I am basically in front of a pc the whole day .. So I can pretty much charge the phone anytime.
So I would like some input from fellow xda users ... which is the best to go for? Desire or Desire HD?

I have a Desire and just got the DHD last week. The DHD doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade over the Desire for me personally and I prefer the more compact size of the desire.
If I didn't already have the Desire, I would be happy with the DHD on it's merits.
@Cranzy: my opinion is that if you don't mind the extra 4mm height and 8mm width, if you don't mind the touch buttons and don't need the optical trackball, if you don't mind the maybe little lower battery life (on other side, on first run i still have 52% battery after nearly 12 hour run, so it looks like a full day with a bit higher usage than usual for me), then go for Desire HD. I got it yesterday, and it's impossible to compare with my old Milestone, the speed is like from a different planet .
Thanks for the info... Think I'm much more leaning towards the Desire HD ...
Ok... the more i read the forum here .. the more I'm thinking Im gonna make the wrong choice by moving to the desire HD and that I should rather be moving to the normal desire ... maybe I should go start reading the normal desire forums ...
Each phone has probably got their own problems...
Will future firmware updates fix most of these little nagging problems ..?
I am upgrading here from HTC diamond .. so both desire or desire HD is a major upgrade ...
Is everybody still saying I should go for the desire HD?
It all depends what you want, but don't forget that graphical performance of HTC Desire is ~50% of the Desire HD or Z.
I really like the big screen and htcsense feature ... i don't mind the battery ... just been reading about the sensor and camera issues ...
Im still leaning towards the Desire HD though
I'm on my second day of my dhd not totally sure if I'm keeping it . Love the screen size and battery life . But its not that much of an upgrade from my desire and I do like the amoled screen better on the desire .
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I gathered from the forums that if you are coming from the desire .. the upgrade isn't really worth it... but for me coming from htc diamond ... it will be
To be honest they are both great phones . Very tempted to keep the hd but will live with my desire till something a bit better comes along or my desire goes faulty . But never the less the hd is a class phone if your coming from something totally different .

How about going to a store and comparing the screens?
Some prefer LCD, others AMOLED.
You obviously get stronger colours and better blacks with AMOLED, while the LCD isn't bad at all and I'd like to say it is a bit sharper than AMOLED.
Also, and this might be due to the fact that I'm used to LCD, but I always find the colors my friends SGS to be oversaturated, and slightly tinted.

Personal preferences. AMOLED is good, but LCD ain't bad. Your computer screen is LCD. Try the Desire HD before you buy it.
The build quality of the DHD is very good. Some people complain about the plastic sim and battery covers, but these are necessary from RF engineering point of view (either you have alluminum back with plastic covers, or you have the whole back plastic - you decide which is better). Anyway, I didn't have any of the issues reported here - no sim cover misalignment, no proximity sensor issues (solved by the first OTA update AFAIK), no init bug (I keep USB debuging on just to be sure ), no nothing. Maybe, just maybe, my screen is tilted a little bit, but it might be my imagination playing tricks on me.
AMOLED vs. LCD is really down to the person who uses it. IMO the only good thing about AMOLED technology is the real black. Other than that, the larger viewing angle is unusable and the colours seem "wrong" to me.
Just a little warning - as you might know, the new 1.72 ROM can't be rooted (yet?), so if you intend to buy from a store, check the phone if it has the old 1.32 ROM, so you can root it and then go with the 1.72 root keeping update procedure.

DHD is a great phone. Love mine to bits. I've been trying to keep an AOSP rom on mine for a while now but keep coming back to Sense. Its just such a fantastic UI. Also the screen is fine. Colours are crisper on AMOLED but text is clearer on SLCD. The text display on AMOLED seems slightly pixelated and blurry to me
I think the S AMOLED screen is great but it's not as sharp. My DHD is sharper than my friends Galaxy S and it is noticable if you stare at both screens. Also after using the DHD the AMOLED seems to have a tint of purple not to mention it's whites never really look white. But boy are the blacks black, I cried a little when I compared. But the thing is the black on the DHD are good anyways.
I agree the dhd is the best phone i've owned, but like i said it just takes a while to get used to screen coming from amoled

I've got a SGS for about 5 months now i switched to DHD. Audio quality is ok but not as good as SGS. Other wise i love it so much as its all leg free with specially with Android Revolution HD rom. I found SLCD does show natural colours then SAMOLED when watching videos. Dolby Mobile sounds great when listening music through headset.
Go for it..
I got the DHD for 3 Days now and its ... omg i cant explain!
the best thing is, i am an android user since G1, and even better , i CAME from G1 ! i was like OMFG *mouth open*
nothing to complain but one thing: after using apps like "Talking Tom the Cat" and same stuff (gf's daughter loves it!) it starts FC such games. it loads the game, i see like 2 seconds of the animated "avatar" than it crashes. a restart fixed it. but after some starts of 2 or 3 other games like that, it happend again.
BUT ONLY with such games!
other games like dungeon defender, nova, exzeus aso run like hell and keep my mouth open!
i was like the little girl in Despicable Me when gettin the fluffy unicorn "ITS SO FLUFFYY!!" but i was like "ITS SO DAMN AWESOME!!"
sry, i am 27 but exited like a 5 year old on christmas
The DHD is far superior. Bigger screen, better build quality (bye bye cheap plastic, hello unibody aluminium), and faster hardware (latest Snapdragon and 768MB RAM vs. outdated Hummingbird and 512MB RAM).

I noticed exactly the same thing with my friends SGS.
The colors are all tinted blue/purple, but the blacks are wonderful.
SGS also has better digitizer (I read somewhere that is runs at 60hz whereas HTC runs at 50hz and iphone at 100hz, cant remember the source though), but you notice how things move better with your finger on the SGS, just slightly.
On the other hand, I notice random lags all the time on my friends SGS.
It's not an easy choice.
im using DHD now and its an awesome phone, the best that ive ever had.
I was coming from a HTC Magic upgrade, thus the difference is very significant.
However, if i owned a SGS, i wouldnt hv upgraded to a DHD to be honest. There will be a slightly better performance from the DHD compared to the SGS, but its not big enough to justify an upgrade IMO.
I wouldve waited next year, and see how those tegra 2 phones performs, and upgrade to one of them.
