[Q] Root and OTA updates? - Vibrant General

Did a search, only thread i found was one that didn't have the question answered either.
So the million $ question! Will having a rooted vibrant not get OTA updates?
The stickied "tips and tricks" thread says yes, you can still get OTA updates, but some people seem to say yes, others no, and even others say "no idea"
Can we have the questions answered?

This is answered in the very first post on this page (it's the Sticky with Tips/Tricks in the title).
Yes. You can receive OTA as long as you're on stock JFD/JI2-3-4 ROM (i.e. not bionix/FTW/etc.). If you updated to JI5 via Kies it appears to be hit/miss.

Yes you can but I got tired of waiting for the update so I just installed it through ODIN.

How hard did you search?
20 mentions of rooted users getting ****ed by their OTA in the threads listed after 30 seconds of looking.
Quite a few also list no issues. You'll get it, but there's no guarantee it'll work.

Im rooted and I got the notification. But with the hit or miss of bricking my phone. Ill stay on JFD till 2.2 comes out. I have no issues with my phone. And for those who like me just want to stay on stock root JFD and got the notification and want to get rid of the little icon of postponing the update. Just use a task killer and its gone.

i will wait as well as its not worth it thanx on the task Kill

Question regarding ROOT

Will Unlocking + ROOTing my Nexus One prevent me from recieving future OTA updates from Google or no?
If you have a rooted G1 (reading your sig) wouldn't the answer be self explanatory?

Did you even read my question?
What does my Sig have to do with my question?
I have a Nexus One and I don't want to miss future updates, such as "Adobe Flash" which is a proprietary app and I don't want to miss out.
If you install ROMs, I assumed you would know that you cannot receive OTA updates anymore. Which I'm sure you do. I don't know personally if rooting your phone, and still using the stock system will disable you from receiving OTA updates. So I'm not of use here. Don't know why I posted here myself lol. Thanks for the harshly toned text ._.

i'm also interested in this question. i would like to root my n1, but i would also like to receive OTA updates from google. i don't plan on installing a custom ROM, just use stock and root for the purpose of wifi tether and a few other root apps. anyone?
I am wondering this as well. I installed the bacon addon from cyanogen and don't want to screw myself out of the ota updates.
Thanks.
You can't have everything people. Pick one. If you need to revert back, I wrote a tutorial.
Chances are you are going to see the updates here first. You guys should know that already unless you are one of those people that come in here, download an update and leave for a few months and recheck to see if there are any other updates.

Sorry, I'm not referring to running a custom ROM. I just want to know if i unlock and ROOT but, keep the original ROM, will I still get the OTA updates or no? So, if anyone knows, I'd gratefully appreciate it.
As far as I understand, as long as you're using the stock, signed Nexus One ROM, nothing would change that would prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
I'm not positive.
The reason custom ROMs do not get OTA updates is because they have the files for them removed, and in the case of the G1, the partition used for doing those is removed if you have the DangerSPL.
Simply rooting and keeping stock should allow you to OTA update still no problem, but like was already pointed out, the updates will be on here befor they are released OTA, and a good cooked ROM is 10times better than the stock.

Why does this matter??????????????
If you rooted, you'd get the OTA updates faster than OTA people!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 100% stock, un-rooted N1. I didn't get the OTA update within the first day, so I did it manually anyway.
What is the point of fearing that you'll miss out on OTA updates??? With root, that should be your *LAST* concern.
BTW guaranteed you will get Flash sooner with a rooted phone than without!
These threads make no sense whatsoever.

Question regarding the early 2.1 update and the official 2.1

Was wondering..
I seen once you update to the early 2.1 update floating around there's no going back to 1.5, which is fine.. I've done the update and have no problems.
However, if they were to tweak more and make the 2.1 update better by the time the official one releases, will our phones still receive the update? Or will it register as already having 2.1 and not pick up on it?
First off please search the Forum and the entire internet before asking questions. I am not trying to be a jerk it is just that if everyone started a new thread for a question this place would be horrible.
Second of all if you have a question related to something you already see a thread started about feel free to drop in and post the question after you have used the search function. Again not trying to be a jerk but about half of the 70+ pages in the 2.1 Leak thread are repetitive questions.
So use the search function and if you still don't find the answer ask it in the 2.1 Leak thread.
Thank you and good luck on the search!

Well, for one, I'm okay answering questions again. IF HTC releases another 2.1 ROM, we can update if we recieve the PB00IMG.ZIP. From what I"ve heard, most of the 2.1 upates won't be OTA, they'll be a process you have to do with a rom update utility from your computer. So we'll recieve that PB00IMG.zip and be able to update just like we did here.
If they release an OTA, they'll have to put two out. One for the 1.5 users, and one for the hacked 2.1. OTA's are designed to update from a certain version to the next, they contain files that are overwritten, not a complete new firmware. That is why the last two OTA updates were 11mb, and the leaked rom was 103MB.
Simply put. If we get an RUU (Rom Update Utility), we will be able to update. If not, I'll give verizon a call and tell them the update failed, I contacted HTC, and they told me to get the Rom Update Utility from them. If we get it, we'll have the newest update
Enjoy!

Root, Roms and OTA Updates

Now that the slide has Root and an update, I have a question that may have been asked/answered in previous threads, forgive me in advance (I did a search and could not get an answer)...
Once rooted, will the slide still get the Froyo update?
Also if the phone has to go back for exchange/warranty, is there a way to flash it back to "Stock" as we did with the Samsung BHII?
TIA!
There is a nandroid backup of the stock rom available in the development section of the forum to revert back for warranty, not sure if froyo will goto a rooted slide, but I'm sure the devs will have a 2.2 rom out soon

Wait... There was an update?
This is the one thing keeping me from rooting.
Just back up your stock android rom before rooting so you can restore it. When you get to clockworkmod for the first time create a backup.

½anyone know where to get the RUU of the slide rom, not mixed and modified by a dev or cook?
but the origional rom or lastest version of it.
the nandroid backup will get you back to stock(ish) and if you're rooted with an aftermarket rom, you WILL NOT receive any updates from tmobile.. A couple days after release of the update, we'll have a rooted version, i can bet my right nut on it(and yes i do still have my right nut lol)
Guys... I don't play forum police or anything but the questions go in the q/a stickied thread or in general. The moderater already moved several threads like this today. Oh and when we do get an update... it will posted here after the proper mods have been made. You'll only have to wait a couple days and I'm sure that will be faster than you having to wait in line for your ota to be beamed to your handset. So go ahead and root it.. trust me! You'll be glad you did. Oh and if you get an ota... don't install it! Contact me or one of the other forum members. Or better yet post your news and we'll tell you the steps so we all can enjoy it.

How to uninstall unrevoked root and recovery reflash tool so I can get OTA update?

I would like to get the OTA update that comes out today, but assume I cannot do that with root and the custom recovery. Are there directions somewhere on how to do this for the unrevoked3 setup? Thanks.
If you are running a rooted stock rom and all you've done is push super user, busybox, and maybe a modified host file for adfree, I don't understand why you would need to unroot to receive the OTA update. None of the core system has been modified. Am I totally off base here? To my mind, the worst that would happen is you would loose root.
need stock recovery to flash the ota properly. downgrade via the instructions posted in this forum and do the two ota. then reroot using unrevoked 3
I'd just wait for the devs to clear the new OTA. Didn't take long with the EVO.
No need to jump the gun quite yet...

Yeah, this is what I'm waiting for. A similiar EVO solution to the OTA
seriously, you open a thread to answer your other thread? while the answer you looking for is right in the 1st page.
I've reported both threads and suggested a temp ban. **** on the first page there is a huge orange font telling me how to install the ota. I wish this phone woulda came out on anything but verizon. To many kids on verizon....and idiots.
Lol

I'm not issuing warnings yet for questions posted in development which may fall under that scope. I have requested a Q&A sub-forum be created for DI. We'll see how that pans out. Until then, please post questions in the thread where you believe your issue is arises. Otherwise, please post questions in the DI/General sub-forum until a Q&A forum is created. Thanks!

They usually release only to a few thousand at a time the first few days, then up to 10,000 a day a few days later or something like that, so you might not get it till next week if its truly coming out.
They also have typically announced the update in the Verizonwireless.com forums under the android\incredible section. Until you see it there I would consider it a rumor.
Im just wondering if we will even get the ota if we're rooted or if we will have to unroot first.
According to this, the update is for real:

gonna have to unroot to get updates.
EDIT: I take this back. It depends on your version. If you have an older version of software and you have not turned off notifications you will get the notification to update. If, however you're running a froyo ROM then my understanding is that you won't see the update.
Been on all the android forums today , so far nobody has gotten the update OTA.
If it was out today vzw would confirm it like they did when we got the first update.
All I heard today was a friend of a friend got the update , RIGHT !
Verizon hasn't released the "official" OTA, but there is a leaked version that people are downloading and installing. It appears to be authentic, but since not an OTA may affect future Radio updates if you install it. Plenty of info over at the Droid Forum.

I'm really anxious to get the update, but I'm going to wait for the OTA. I updated my Eris with a leaked OTA, and I ended up regretting it. It made rooting much more difficult, and stopped me from getting the final OTA.

Do you know how it stopped you from getting the final OTA? i would think if you wiped and went back to a stock ROM the network wouldn't know the difference.

Nope. Known issue with the Eris leak.
Well, I'm not sure if if I have the OTA or not, or just part of it.
I rooted with the original instructions, then updated everything with Unrevoked 3.1. Stock ROM installed, have working WIFI tether.
Yesterday, got a message in my notification bar that a Verizon widget was available. I can now add a new Data Usage widget to my desktop, which says "Data Usage 0.0/0 MB Estimate as of N/A". Not sure why it isn't updating, but it's possible that it's related to me having a corporate rather than a personal account.
Never got a prompt to install any OTA. Tethering still works.
Hardware version 0002, Firmware version 2.1-update1
So maybe the Verizon widget was pushed by itself without the full OTA since I don't have the standard recovery?
FYI, the OTA has been halted in favor of packaging it up with the official Android FroYo v2.2 update. So instead up two OTA's we will have one OTA to rule them all!

No, the recommendation would probably be to hold your horses and wait till the OTA get's patched so we can simply upgrade without any hassle.
