[Q] Worth the effort to go Android for 6 months - Touch CDMA General

I'm probably looking at a new phone in about 6 months, maybe less. My HTC Touch is old and I'd love to see some of the new Android builds and software.
My question is, is it worth it to put the effort into finding, flashing, and tweaking a ROM for such a short period of time. More importantly, will the experience on this much older hardware be worth it considering my upgrade will likely be much newer and more powerful hardware-wise.
Along those lines, is a fully tricked out Android Touch worthy of forgoing the newest 4G phones and thus avoiding the $10 surcharge, assuming that my current 3G web browsing is tolerable as long as I get over the screen size issue?
Thank you in advance for any thoughts you have.

Android on vogue is totally worth it. it runs really nicely. not as nice as a new phone, but, hey - you've already got it. and it's pretty easy to get installed. you can always run it via haret for a week or two to 'try before you buy'

Yes, it runs nicely, although because of the somewhat low resolution, some apps are cut off like robo defense, but it's playable. (also kitten cannon, makes the menu buttons all squished up but it is still playable). Remember to use the NAND method because while i used the sd card method, its SUCKED. And you can test out android and all to see if you like it. Not sure if you can do this, but to my understanding you can use a phone for like 30 days and then return it if you don't like it. but that might only be if you are getting a new plan with a new carrier or something.

Thanks for the answers and for the tip on which method to use.

One last thing, if you are thinking about getting a device with 4G to eventually ditch your Vogue, make sure that you do it when 4G is available in your area. Otherwise, you will find those extra $10 per month to be a cause for rage against an otherwise really good carrier.
The Vogue should be perfectly fine as long as you can use it.

New to Incredible

I am leaving att simply because of their shotty data plan. I am also looking at the Incredible because of the unlocked unencrypted bootloader as the droid x has as well as the htc quality that ive seen in the past. I listen to alot of internet radio and 2gbs just isnt enough sorry att and im even more sorry that after 6 years youll be losing 3 lines. At 150.00 a month.
Without starting a pissing match, what rom is good on battery and speed? Generally looking for some user experience reviews.

HeyItsLou's ROMs always gave me great battery life, with Chad's kernels. Right now I am running CM7 Nightly #7, and the battery life is alright for me, not bad enough to switch to something else. Other than that I really like CM7.
I've always had great battery life with the Inc/Evo hybrid ROMs too, I know Lou's got one...there's others out there too by Myn and Chingy.
Thanks! How is your data on verizon?
Sent from Xda Premium on a Captivate running Paragon 6
Like you, I switched from ATT. I had a Curve with them, and the BB was slow along with their network. I had friends on Verizon, and I loved Verizon's phones, so I jumped. Been happy ever since. I live in Madison, WI, and haven't had any issues with 3g drops, dropped calls, or anything like that. I use WiFi alot too, about 50% of the time. I haven't had any complaints about it since switching, it was a great move I think.
This is the kind of thing i need to hear. I am on long island and its not that data is that bad, but att just doesnt get it, 2gbs just isnt enough.

Just adding some input, i love verizon alot and literally have no complaints. I live in California, and i cant remember the last time i dropped a call, or thought 3g was too slow. I use ALOT of data and its a great feeling not having to care about any 3g limits.

Agreed. The last time I remember a call dropping wasn't even my phone/Verizon's fault, it was my brother on Sprint that dropped it. I use data way more than voice, and use my phone heavy for work emails and phone calls (phone calls - only if I am out of the office though).

Do you know anyone that uses Verizon in Long Island that you could ask about the service? Maybe stop someone you see with an Inc or another Verizon phone and ask, just to get an idea of how it operates where you are at. I wouldn't think there would be issues. Just a thought.

I should talk to my brother in law. He has a droidx and knows nothing about rooting and flashing and all that good stuff, but he seems to have zero issues. the best part about this whole thing was when i was talking to the retention dept and praising them trying to pull the unlimited data out of them the call dropped! Which sealed the deal. I had verizon years ago and dont know why i left to begin with. Their unlimited data blows away att's $25.00 2 gb plan.

My 0.02 cents. Versions network is vastly superior to att. In terms of coverage my dad had an iphone on att and we were driving in Minnesota using google nav to get somewhere. His phone hits a dead spot. We switch to my inc and get there. His phone was in the dead spot the entire time after that. I mean 0 bars, and he wants to switch his entire company next time the contacts run out

Verizon has more coverage for sure. But if you're in an area that actually has at&t coverage, I also think you won't be disappointed at Verizons 3G speeds.
I'm able to stream hulu (modded flash, normally does not stream to phones) to my phone perfectly, watch full episodes without anymore than a 5 second buffer. What makes that statement better is I'm able to do it in an area that has low bar 3G coverage.
And you're right about the unlocked bootloader the incredible has. My dad has the X and there isn't a whole lot of options you can do to increase performance and speed. Pretty much you're only able to swap out ROM's.
The incredible is different, I've been able to change kernels, the splash screen and boot animation, as well as the ROM.
The ROM's choices available are really pretty amazing. There's a bunch of really talented developers here, you can take a quick look at the list here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969371
So I would definitely recommend you jump ship and go with the Incredible on Verizon
I am definitley jumping ship and bringing all three lines over to verizon. I am waiting until monday when i am off from work again so i can sit down and make sure everything is ported over correctly. I already am deciding what rom and kernel im running and it seems to point to skyraider and maybe incredikernel unless you have other suggestions. As far as rooting goes ill be using unrevoked.

Ah excellent choices my friend
You may end up trying out some other ROM's, I know I have- but I always found myself going back to that combination because of the stability, speed and battery life it has provided me.
There are plenty of ROM's I have never tried, so it's all out there to experiment with.
Believe me I flash roms more than I probably should but, Im really excited to use android the way it was meant to be used with unlimited data. Im talking 8-12 hours of continuous sirius and/or pandora usage.

Also, I never have any issues with vzw when I'm on L.I. or anywhere else. Enjoy.

ah that's what I'm using
It's good that you're getting it straight off so you get use to it with it on, some people have a hard time switching.
Well I use the seidio 3000mah battery which is a monster on my captivate. So the size should be no problem. With a little more research i found redemption rom which looks nice. One question I can't get a definitive answer to is on radios. I have flashed radios in the past and was wondering if its absolutely necessary to on the incredible?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
As far as speed goes, I use Incredibly Reengineered its uberfast... for battery life I installed Set CPU to save on batt when I'm low, but I'm never far from a charger. If battery life is more important there's a bunch of ROMs that have excellent life but it's all personal preference.
I am going with re-engineered v2.3.2 and using the lou's #8 which is already built into the rom. As far as sense goes I'll be stripping it and using the aosp theme. As far as radio's go should I just use the one that is shipped with the phone which is being delivered on friday or should I flash a different one? What about HBoot version? I didnt see if I needed to update HBoot to a different version. Thanks in advance!

Im officially impressed

So I got my Atrix a few days ago. With my Captivate (when I had one) I had to carry a spare battery with me cause when used a lot, like I do now, I was getting maybe 8 hours of use out of it. Well yesterday I charged my Atrix to 100% and unplugged it at 10:05am Pacific Standard time. I just checked the battery and 24 hours later its at 30%. This is with brightness set to medium, gps and data on, checking the internet through the day (mostly on 3G), letting my son look around on youtube for a few hours (on wifi) and just getting normal useage out of it, like phone calls, texts and emails.
I really like my Captivate, but there were a few things that really ruined the experience for me, namely the battery life. I can understand why people would want it because of how easy it is to do custom roms and such, but I think I just want a mostly stock phone, just rooted so I can have a little more control. This is the phone. My wife even liked it so we are ordering one for her.
Looks like I will be around these forums for a while as I always find good information here.
There are a lot of things about this phone that are impressive!

I was more than just impressed when I got my Atrix. had bunch of smart phones in the past, LG, Nokia, Sony, Iphone. Symbian used to be the king of the hill, but after i got this last week i was truly impressed. 720p playback out of the box, connected straight to my Sammy HDTV in the living room, able to get into the webtop (netbook) mode via hdmi cable from a wireless keyboard/mice. It pretty much ran like a little computer but in a pocket-sized form factor. Just wait until they add the mkv native playback and unlock the 1080p mode. Keep in mind that we have one of the most advanced phone/computer in our hands, the hardware is there, just need the software updates to make it even better.
What surprised me more then anything is how much my wife likes the phone. This is her first smartphone and I convinced her to get an Atrix rather then an iPhone. She didn't like my captivate much, but has really been enjoying this phone, especially as a user of Facebook. That really shocked me.

i agree, the atrix is a great phone. i was a bit apprehensive to order one, seeing as i live in australia (which means a pain in the butt if i had warranty issues etc.), and there were multiple threads on the forum with lots of issues such as random reboots, wifi not connecting, bad battery life, bad build quality etc.
i decided to take the plunge, and couldnt be happier. ive had to phone for about 5 days now, and havent had any problems yet (fingers crossed). i dont think think i would care if the devs unlocked the bootloader, because everything just works out of the box. only minor problem is the horrible upload speeds, but im sure an update from AT&T would fix it (if and when they release it).
I'd probably buy one if I were in the market for a new phone right now, but given that I have a Captivate, I just can't see the point. The screen does look nice, I played with one in the store, but I feel like all of the ROM options on the Captivate keep it ahead of the pack even though the hardware has been topped by the Atrix. Interestingly enough, the other two "4G" phones from AT&T have the same resolution as the Captivate, so no upgrade there.
What do you guys upload that can't wait to be around wifi?

Who knows. The uproar about HSUPA is unbelievable. The user experience is exactly the same. HSUPA is probably the last thing I could care about on a phone. I ended up with it by accident by putting a new ROM on my Captivate, and that feature changed my experience exactly 0%.

I havent either. Like you said...people just like to be pissed off about something. I havent noticed it affecting my use of the phone.
By having a low upload speed, your web browsing experience will be slower.
Back, when I had the phone, I had a higher latency than what I do now with my N1.
Upload speeds are becoming just as important as download speeds; having one limited will ultimately slow you down.

I pay for tethering and use it quite extensively while I travel for business. Going from a 1.5Mbit uplink to 300Kbit is pretty noticeable.
Often wifi is either unavailable, costs money to connect to, or in the case of many hotels substantially slower than tethering.

Well, I presume you can switch back to working on something else during the "extended" wait.
Personally I agree that speeds should be uniform across all devices, but I don't think that the upload speed makes much of a difference in everyday use.

I'm the proud owner of a rooted Droid running UD7, and have rooted friends' Droids, too. But STILL, I read the instruction in the root Xoom "how-to" in the dev forum, and I can't for the life of me figure it out enough to have any confidence what so ever while trying it!
-It's the same thing as when root came out for the Droid; there's the "know wtf it all means" crowd getting pelted with redundant Qs from us "can't figure it out" guys!
-So what's the usual donation for this?
I'd probably use one instead of ADB.

Honestly, I'm afraid to go first.
I would assume this is for Xoom 3G and not Wifi only?
Someone point me towards a good backup program for unrooted Xooms so I can backup all my apps and configs and I'll go first
keep in mind that the wifi and 3g xooms appear to be different when it comes to rooting...

Its not a bad thing to learn ;-) and its really not that difficult to use adb.. people are just so damn lazy in this day and age.. its like "what I have to type something?!?! I can't just click something?" Lol god you younger people would have flipped if all you had was dos when you were a kid like me. Hell back then everything was on 5 1/4 floppy disks Lol
I'm taking classes (I'm 35) and the professor asked the class if anyone remembered before there was an internet.. 3 people raised their hands.. lol so if people now a days can't remember when there was no internet its almost impossible to think people know what it was like before windows, when everything was command based.. me I'd much rather type I to a prompt then click a button

Gosh, thanks for that.
I do remember DOS. I also remember when my school got the new TRS80s during my sophomore year. I remember learning BASIC.
I also remember having to sell my prized posession, a beautiful Fender bass, to pay my rent because my landscaping job wasn't paying me well enough. Thank God I found the part time job shoveling **** at that horse farm. It wasn't so bad because it's cool at night.
Nuttin' like shovelin' **** for five hours after a 10 hour day baking in the sunshine smashing your finger all to hell building rock walls.
What I DON'T seem to remember are any times when I had a spare thousand bucks to set fire to.
Now from all that you might gather that I'm just some dumb ass laborer with no need to even HAVE a Xoom, let alone root the thing, but I'm not. I've hacked my Canon cameras, my K1m, my Droid, and now I want to take my Xoom to its limits.
What I DON'T wanna do is turn it into a friggin paperwieght for my desk (...yes, years later I now work at a desk).
I agree with you that there are a lot of lazy folks these days, and being 8 years your senior, I've witnessed this regression more so than yourself. However, I don't think "lazy" is nearly as accurate as "fearful" is for the true description of folks here looking for a sure-fire way to root with the least amount of possibility of catastophic failure.
Sorry for the rant, but this has always been an issue for me from guys that share your perspective on this.

[Q] questions from a Droid user maybe coming to sprint

I currently have the Original Droid, which has been a great phone in terms of what you have been able to do to it and it's reliability. My question is; how do the owners of the Epic feel about their phone? Still happy with it? Like the roms that have come out for it? And since I haven't paid much attention to Sprint, up until now, any other phones down the line I should think about? My contract with Verizon is up in 3 months.
Yes if you like a hardware keyboard then get the Epic it's a great phone you won't be dissapointed
If you like running the latest and Greatest software then the Nexus S will be out for sprint in like a month.
If you want a powerhouse of a phone then the Evo3D should be out by June following what they did with the original Evo

Thanks for the link!
I never buy phones on contract, and swapped from an iPhone to a Moto Droid in May of last year. Loved the Android platform, since I'm a programmer and super-user -- not a dumb user, the way the iPhone continued to fail.
I switched to the Epic 4G around October of that year (bought off-contract as well, ESN was clear, but ended up still being attached to an account... got scammed and ported it to Cricket myself). Love the keyboard. Love the screen. Not a bad phone at all. I wouldn't buy it on contract, though, since the new phones are coming out. But in my mind, the Epic is a definite upgrade from the Droid, albeit still not quite as flexible as the original Droid was in terms of development and ROMs (was on Sapphire with Droid -- tried pretty much all the different ROMs for Epic and they're nice, but not as nice as something mostly AOSP, i.e. CM7 or Sapphire). Waiting patiently for Epic's CM7 to be mostly stable so I can try to ROM with that -- having very high hopes for it.
So in a nutshell, yes, great phone. But, the only issue is that the phone will be outdated rather quick, though I don't think we're going to see another contender with a decent keyboard for a while with dual-core processors, etc (re: I'm guessing a year). No comment on Sprint service, but double check with reviews in your area to see how coverage, etc, is before making the jump.

YOU have issues, the vast majority of people are capable of flashing a ROM correctly and troubleshooting any problems they might have, don't dissuade someone from purchasing a phone they want because YOU have problems using it correctly.
I really do like my phone and the ROMs are smoke'n.
They have been having a bit of an issue releasing Froyo that doesn't have some level of suckage.
We're expecting a 3rd try this week.
What balances that are the AWESOME devs for it; they popout an updated ROM with the latest update in no time at all.
Everyone is spot on in regards to hardware keyboard, I find myself (I HAD to have a real keyboard) actually using the swype keyboard way more than the physical one. Go figure.
Some GPS issues; though each update makes it a bit better.
There is a reason that this phone is the #1 selling PDA phone.
Having all said that, in a few months there will be some really powerful stuff that will just blow the doors off anything currently available. If I were in your position. I'd go for a multi-processor phone.
Good luck
I say get an evo.
Theres a whole lot more going on with the evo development that its a much more flexible phone.
Our phone has a lot of potential, but with a fracyion of evo/droid devs its harder for the epic to get there.

Check out the hardware keyboard fix from mkasick - it's implemented in SRF 1.1.0 and its accompanying kernel, Twilight Zone 1.1.0. If you don't want to leave your current ROM, give Twilight Zone a try. The fix is an adjustable one - so you can set the value as low as you want. That should completely eliminate any issues you're having.

YOU have issues, the vast majority of people are capable of flashing a ROM correctly and troubleshooting any problems they might have, don't dissuade someone from purchasing a phone they want because YOU have problems using it correctly.

These forums speak for them selves. You don't see half the problems in the HTC forums. Also if you have BOTH phones you would know how many more problems there are on this phone. I would wait for the nexus s if you want a sammy. I would not choose this phone again if I had it to do over.

I do have both, and have had few issued with either, I made the choice to stick with the Epic as my daily driver because its a much nice phone hardware wise and significantly lighter. I find it difficult to believe you would have any of the issues you're having if you properly flashed it.

I can't even tell you how many times I've flashed this phone trying to get an optimal set up. I have found that over all I've had less problems with the stock rom, but it is still a lot more buggy than the evo. I would just give this phone to my girlfriend and take her evo, but I don't think she would know what to do if the phone went haywire on her. Hers is stock and I've had far less issues with it than this phone. The only times I had any real issues with her evo is when I tried to mess with it. Trust me man, I thought I was the one screwing up this phone, that's why I'm trying out the stock hardware! All I'm saying there are a lot more issues. Trust me I bought this phone for the same reasons as everyone else! I'm just getting sick and tired of having to Odin the damn thing everyone 3 to 4 weeks! I thought a program may have been causing it, so now I'm trying stock ROM EC and I've only rooted it. I've downloaded XDA, Poynt, Blow up, and the Chase apps. These are the only apps I have on here now, so I was hoping that it was maybe an app causing my problems. Today I had my first problem since going to my current set up. I've been talking about it in this forum, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12464672#post12464672. I'm hoping that it's something that I just needed to reboot my phone. The only other thing I can think that made my phone go black screen is when I use the media player and play videos. I'm hoping it's not one of the apps, but I haven't been able to replicate the problem today. I'm just saying that my girl doesn't have any of these issues with the evo and right now I'm basically on the edge with this phone!!!! I also don't want to shell out a bunch more money for a phone so I just kind of have to deal with it and hope I can find a solution, but I would not recommend this phone to anyone after what I've been through! The Nexus S may be a different story since it's stock, but not this phone!

I'm not gonna say that flashing isn't a complicated thing. But that's your choice and if you really want to experience amazing ui then it takes time of the individual to figure how and what they can and can not do. That's why there is 1 click root. Flashing is not meant for everyone so if you don't have the time that's cool but don't blame the phone for your short comings either in time or intelligence or pesistence.

Trust me I've flashed this phone many times. I'm sorry to tell you that when you flash Roms and kernels there are still going to be some problems. I realise that you may want to flash Roms and kernels to make the phone run a certain way, otherwise there wouldn't be multiple roms or kernels to flash if everything worked perfect with one. You're showing your ignorance if you think that a flashed rom and/or kernel is going to be problem free. There's a reason why there are constant updates to the roms and kernels.
I'm just tired of doing it and you should be able to use the phone, without it crashing, without having to mess with it. I don't think it's too much to ask for the phone to not crash when it's stock. Maybe I need to go to full stock with out root. Maybe that's what's causing the phone to mess up. That's my next option!
Edit: I wish I could see other things you've bought. Just curious what type of repairs you had to do to them...
Not sure why you would expect something to NOT work correctly out of the box? You make a valid point it shouldn't work correctly stock..........

Whatever you do, do NOT get the Epic. Even if it's free. The keyboard TO THIS DAY does not work properly. It still misses keys and it's not layed out all that well either. I came from a g1 that had a keyboard that ACTUALLY registered keys, even if you type faster than my grandma. Please do not get the epic, get the evo shift or wait for something else on Verizon.

Don't make a mistake - wait for the 3D or get the Nexus S if you can't.

I do agree unless he's getting a crazy deal on the regular evo. Evo 3D but no nexus s.

I would suggest getting the Evo now, and snagging the Evo 3D when it comes this month. Sprint fortunately has the 30–day trade in deal, so I would definitely go to to 3D if I were you as soon as possible.
I would suggest using unrEVOked to root your phone, simple and flawless for the two Evos I had rooted 10 times each. After all that, I would use Amon RA for recovery. No issues, and doesn't have the scripting issues that Clockwork has. ROMs... Go on and enjoy

Just a heads up you pay $30 to swap out your phone.
If that's not too expensive, then go for it!

Thing is guys, I am the middle of no where Alabama...There is no WiFi etc to link up with, usually I just use my phone as a hotspot, but since its TMO, and TMO gets ONLY edge...I can't. This is actually why I am switching to Sprint, because as of right now I am paying 80$ for TMO and 80$ for a Verizon Hotspot(that is only 10GB's of data..not enough!) which is 160.... I figure if I just change to sprint, I will be able to get unlimited everything plus add tethering and will be paying only 100 a month....plus military discount. As far as waiting for the EVO 3D...I don't have time, there is NOTHING to do here...all I have is my internet hahah...so what I will probably do is take advantage of that 30 day return policy to purchase the 3d...or not purchase it at all, because it doesn't seem THAT practical(in my opinion anyways)..and it seems like it could bog the phone down and likely drain the battery very quickly...But then again...since I am paying 200 for the EVO...if the 3D isn't too much more, I might just get it to have the "new new" haha. Thanks a lot guys for the links, etc... Happy Rooting!

I would get the 3D, it is a beautiful piece of hardware. SLCD screen, more RAM, 1.2 ghz dual-core processor, I'm guessing improved camera, Sense 3.0... It really is a nice step for the Evo. I would just shut off the 3D effect though, save some battery. The 3D is supposed to have a bigger battery, and there are claims of better power usage with dual-core processors. So spring for the Evo I say, and snag the 3D when it lands in that 30-day trade-in period!
Welcome to the Evo fam!
I leave in 7 weeks for BCT in OK. I wanted the EVO3D so bad but it would just sit in a locker during the entire training .. Then AIT in GA till Jan2012. So I'll just be keeping my EVO till then. Nexus3 should probably be dropping around that time
The EVO is really awesome and you'll enjoy it 100% Lots of mods, roms, themes, kernels, etcc...and tons of help here on this forum!!
You wont have to 'add tethering' to your acct. After root, most roms have the hotspot unlocked.
I can only imagine you will LOVE your evo. (But the 30day exchange may be good idea, too).

Yea...I know that rooting unlocks it or whatever, but my friend who works for sprint said that if they notice a lot of data usage like that, they will prolly just realize that is what you are doing, and charge you for the tether anyways...I will try to get away with it I suppose.
QUICK question though...
In the MT4G forum there was a Pd115.img (or whatever the name was) that you could just flash, and it was basically the stock...and it rerooted and factory reset basically everything...it was really helpful when I was about to send a phone back on warranty. Is there a thread on here? I will search for it, but if someone just happened to know exactly where it was
Why is it I can get an evo for 90 on amazon but its 199 at sprint...? Pros /cons of amazon?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Mmm finally got my evo in the mail...boy she is sexy! And luckily the 3d comes out within the thirty day period from when I bought this beast.... loving sprint already.
