Happy Birthday, Hero - Hero CDMA General

Well, the Hero's first birthday or release anniversary is next Monday. How long have you had your Hero for, and when do you plan on keeping it until? I got my hero on launch day, rooted it in December, and plan on dumping it next month.

Got mine back in march and it's just been getting better and better with the outstanding dev support and dedicated community we have here. This had been my first Android phone, and what a wonderful introduction it's been!
I'm in no hurry to replace it, but of course some of the new handsets out there are damn tempting..

I've got mine since Oct. 8, 2009... from a Sprint store, I lucked out and was able to buy it two days before launch

I got mine in April when I came back to Sprint from AT&T. I dearly love my Hero, especially since I rooted, but those new phones are awful tempting. :-D
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Froyo on Hero action here!

I got the Hero sometime when it started to get cold and dark here, ie October or November, and I didn't root the phone until early this year when I got tired of waiting for the official Sprint update (to 2.0? 2.1?).
That seems so long ago. The software updates from this community have been super but the phone is feeling old and underpowered. I get to upgrade in November.
I'd love to upgrade to one of the 4G android phones but wonder if I should wait a little longer until the next greatest phone is released.

This is the problem I'm facing. My one year upgrade is in April, but I'm unsure if I should upgrade or wait it out.

Got mine in January. Rooted about a month ago due to wanting some froyo. My upgrade is in January. Thinking about waiting for the new mobile processors to be out to upgrade.

Got mine on launch day, rooted for some froyo a few weeks ago. I'll probably wait to upgrade till a new model makes me go "oh wow!" which nothing on the radar has done yet.

I will not upgrade until sprint has dual core phones next year... if you buy the evo or the samgsung your making a mistake.

A lot of us are in the same boat. The companies like to keep us guessing so we can't plan too far ahead. I've Googled a bit and can't find anything definitive on new phones in the next few months.
Any clue when dual core phones might be released?
I can wait until January, but if it's gonna be say April, I might as well have an Evo 4G for as long as I can. My market has 4G now and the tether would be useful.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't like having outdated technology for too long, but I would wait it out if it wouldn't be too long. Some of the people at my Sprint store say that 4G comes around these parts (Jersey Shore) in December and something codenamed HTC Sabor, dual-core 1.5ghz is coming out in April. With the rate technology is advancing, doesn't seem to far fetched to me.

Got my hero last November and still love it to death. I don't plan on replacing it when my upgrade comes next month, I want to wait and see what's coming out next year first.
Running cm6 is my only saving grace really. If it wasn't for that rom I'd probably have dumped this for the evo by now.
My main use of the phone is email, rss, and tethering. As long as it continues to perform those well I should be able to hold out till the dual cores arrive. I hope heh.

I got mine back in May this year. Rooted it, (thanks regaw!) and tweaked it with NfiniteFX's roms. It is my introduction to Android phone, and I've been impressed since day one. I'm keeping mine at least till my upgrade.

I got my first Hero in May..it lasted a 1-1/2 weeks..traded it in on a TP2..one of the worst mistakes in cell phones I ever made.I went through 4 of them before finally getting a Hero back last August. Rooted it on 8-26-10. This month Sprint broke my contract I had..and will be moving to a Galaxy S Captivate next week.
I can say it has been quite a bit of fun with them for the short time I've had them rooted.Too bad for the person buying it,since I will revert it back to 1.5 via RUU before shipping it in..( All 4 of my families is already sold and mine needs to be made stock so sad..) Hopefully the Captivate gets as much love from the developers as the Hero has..I've heard Cyanogen is considering porting CM6 over sometime..and if we can get the new Gold theme the Impaler and others have been working so hard on over..I'll be very happy..
I am not too worried about how it will fair against what is coming out.,and what is speculation. It has a very strong and quite separate CPU & GPU with gobs of storage and ram available, and when FroYo is out for it this quarter..will really come alive then. Being able to oc it as we have for the Hero will be a 2 fold job for the developers..one for the kernel..and one for the GPU..
I see faster and smarter phones with better themes on the horizon for everyone..
Mac

I got mine six months ago. I'm going to keep modding it until it dies, or until the dual cores come out. Whichever comes first.

i got my hero on launch day from best buy on the 8th of oct last year and i just upgraded to the epic 4g on the 8th of oct yesterday after getting a good deal from sprint

I got mine on release day. Had to drive all over the city to find a store that still had one in stock. I questioned it at the time but after I got the phone there was no such worry. It has been a great phone and I will hang onto until I find something else that can live up to the expecations I know have.
I am intrigued at what Palm might roll out. I had the Pre for almost a month before this phone and if it was for some bad hardware I would still be a Web OS owner. Android is great but Web OS was pretty awesome. So I will wait to see what else comes.

WebOS was so nice. If only WebOS would come out on a phone that has good build quality... One can hope, eh? But like most of you guys, I'm just going to hang onto my Hero until it dies or something ridiculous comes out.

i got my phone in july of this year rooted it the second week of owning it and been happy with it first smart phone i have ever owned. not planning on dumping it any time soon

I purchased my hero in june and rooted in the second week of owning it

Who here is going to move to the EVO when its relesed or shortly there after?

With all the excitement over this device who here is going to jump **** and move to the HTC EVO? I love my little Hero but this phone is awesome! I will probably just give the hero to my lady, but I'm worried development will halt after this is released. This has been a great learning device as we got it rooted to quickly and customization came shortly there after. Id like to here your opinions on the Hero and EVO. Exciting times for Sprint users

It's been fun... but good bye Hero, hello Evo!

Mine's in November, but I might bight the bullet to avoid a root-patch
Im not a fan of the size, So I will hold out for something better.
If the N1 drops on Sprint before the EVO even has a date and/or price then I will pick it up (the Nexus). If the EVO has a date and price when then happens, well, then it will depend.
I love all the cool phones dropping every 6 months anymore, but wow this is getting expensive!
If it were rooted and had real hardkeys, I'd be at Best Buy at 10am on October 9th to buy one & celebrate my 12-month anniversary. To be honest, I don't really like either the Nexus One or the Evo. The hypothetical phone I really want is an "Incredible" that's rooted and can take a minimally-tweaked N1 ROM almost straight from git and flash without drama. Then I could have my hardkeys, trackball, 850x480 display, enjoy SenseUI for now, but freely ditch it for NexusLand the moment I feel like it's getting in the way and limiting my upgrade options.
4G would be nice, but as it stands I barely have usable data service inside my house (if I disable 'hybrid' and try to force EV-DO, it flat-out doesn't work about 20% of the time, and is unreliable another 20-30%). Assuming WiMax propagation & signals are on par with Sprint's CDMA2000 service, I have every reason to suspect that my neighborhood will be as "urban fringe" for 4G as it is for EV-DO.
(edit)Actually, I take that back. I think part of my problem is the fact that my house shares a Sprint tower with a major regional mall 2 blocks away. Late at night, and in the middle of the afternoon on most weekdays, EV-DO works fairly well. But 4-9pm, and weekends... (((shudder))).
I plan to buy the EVO the day it hits the market. My Hero isn't eligible for the upgrade until December, but my wife and daughter are due April 1. I plan to have one of them delay upgrading so I can use their upgrade to get the EVO, then give them my Hero.
This is one nice benefit of having a plan with 5 phones. I usually have a phone ready for upgrade every 4 months or so.
Not me, I think it sucks.
Ohhh, I almost kept a straight face on that!
I live in Austin, which is crawling with WIMAX. I have been wanting a higher res vid cam. I kept playing with the HD demo here at the GDGT party a week ago (which has a similar sized screen). I've been seriously eyeing the Sprint Overdrive myfi hotspot. HDMI output??? Hello!!
There are just too many things that this phone has that I want. I am not rich but will be getting it even if I have to work nights to save up for it!
I'll be dropping it on my employee line ASAP. Hopefully they won't restrict it on us.
i wont give a shizz if my hero its able to upgrade or anything ill get it no matter what
Will you move to the EVO sub-forum with questions regarding a phone that's not labeled in this sub-forum when it is released?? (which was created 12 hours ago, and before this post?)
lol.. just playing
Since no large screen keyboard devices are coming ill most likely grab the evo.
What i really wanna know is if the great dev support we got for our heroes will be making the move to the EVO?
Flipz? Darch? Toast? etc?
I know Gbhil mentioned he will be switching between the Evo and the Hero due to size.
ill pass on it tbh...the thing is huge and i won't use half of the features. besides the fact i bet the price tag will be about $600+ without an upgrade fee applied.

I just got my Hero less than 2 months ago, so I'll stick with it until upgrade time, by then they should have even more killer phones avail

[Q] How long do you plan on keeping your EVO in service?

With all the new phones being announced and those that should be announced soon, how long do you guys and gals plan on keeping your EVO in service?

I agree as well, but I could really use a better display. Love your avatar BTW. hahaha
Till either i brick it, or when it's time to upgrade in a year and a half, lol.
Until june assuming that's when the evo 2 (or next top phone) is coming. I'm giving sprint until ctia (march 21-24) to announce it and it had better be dual core. If not announced by then I'm buying out my contract and getting a vzw lte dual core. I'm tired of not getting 4g here in detroit while vzw lte and tmo hspa+ is active right here right now.
Till June. That's when my upgrade is, no way am I sticking with this beyond that. I really hope Sprint announces a BAD ASS successor, because if they don't then I'm jumping ship to VZW.
when there is a newer sprint phone with 4.3"+ screen with a HTC logo on the front of it and massive dev support behind it
I'll hold out till a month after they release their new flagship phone, only to hopefully get a good price for it.
I remember paying 200 for my hero then a month later it was 100 so

I hear ya on that. You would think this area would be prime for 4G but instead they give it Grand Rapid?!
I usually drive my phone till it dies except in the case of that crappy Samsung Instinct(got it a week after launch, and ditched it on the Evo's launch day). Before that was the BB 6250, and before that a /\/\ i90, then before that a /\/\otorola brick I can't remember what. Long time Sprint PCS/Nextel customer.
The BB what the longest phone I owned (almost 5 years), and it showed its scar's. Replaced the case like 3 times, display once, and keyboard twice. So I'll be using the Evo for quite sometime provided it doesn't fall apart in the mean time.

100% in agreement.
in another 1 1/2 years for me, by then LTE should be deployed hopefully or atleast a better solution for voice & data.
Until something better comes out.
I'm on SERO premium, which means I don't get the annual upgrades (but only pay $50/month). I'm prepared to pay full price (or turn to ebay) every other year if needed. I'd say that as soon as something notably better than the Evo (better processor and GPU, better battery life ideally) is out, I'll plop down the $450 or whatever it costs and do it.
I love my rooted EVO with custom rom, but come this Summer, an EVO 2 will be hard to resist not to upgrade too. Dual cores, better screen tech, newest Android OS, better battery life...yeah EVO 2 will be a first day purchase for me.
I absolutely love this phone. I will Upgrade to the next generation EVO how ever long it takes for it to come. But i will never get rid of my EVO. I had a TouchPro and an old 6700 for nostalgia. But i sold them after rooting my EVO. This phone will be my new BACKUP if anything ever comes along to take its place.
Until T-Mobile gets a HSPA+ dual core phone. I love my EVO but the Sprint service in my area is absolutely horrible.
Probably until July 1st. That is when I have a chance to upgrade. Hopefully Sprint will have some good phones to upgrade too. (T7P or 2nd Gen Evo)
Imma wait till the upgrade from evo->? Is as big as from hero->evo. Or Christmas, which ever comes first. The plus side to upgrading at Christmas is: sprint's summer release schedule. By the time I upgrade, the Dev community is up and running. I'm hoping Google releases a dev phone on sprint soon...that would be my dream come true.

Upgrading(ed)??

Yo yo yo,
Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone is upgrading to a new phone or has already... I love my hero but I've been itching for a new one for the past 6months lol. And tomorrow is my full eligible upgrade date.
Who s upgraded or plans too? which phone you getting the evo? Or should I wait for the evo 3D? (Idk if I can wait) Or shoot heard tthe atrix might be coming to sprint ...
What's your advices??? >:-D

I also am waiting, but getting very anxious.
I like the dual core 1.2 with the 3d, but the 3d camera seems a bit stupid...
I have looked at the Evo forums and there are some nice roms going on over there...
Ya man idk I think the 3D camera is an alright touch especially for like a family stand point I know my niece and nephew would love to record and see the 3D effect on the phone... but ya the dual is what I think waiting for would make the wait worth it .... I thought I had to wait till April 15th and I just checked they said tomorrow.... spool tempting to just go get the evo lol

I've been sitting on an upgrade for a few months. I've come so close to just giving in and getting the EVO, especially after the disappointment of the Kyocera Echo announcement. By no means do I think that the EVO is an inferior device, but after hearing about the EVO 3D, I know its going to be my next phone. And CM7 on my Hero makes it possible for me to get through the next couple months without throwing my phone against the wall. Well that and the fact that my backup device would be my old Samsung Instinct S30

i think the evo 3d is gonna be a beast, even the i phone 5 cant match up against it, trust me wait for it, cause i've just got my upgrade & im waiting for the summer to come

Defiantly going to try and wait for the 3D, the new ginger roms by AOSP have been pretty stable and smooth. I can handle waiting for another few months. :-D
SPRINT put up the release date/pre-order options
thanks guys for your thoughts and the 3D is going to be baller.
I'm going for the EVO 3D when it hits. I didn't get the EVO when it came out and opted for the Hero instead. I won't make that mistake again. I really like the Hero for the most part, but no matter what ROM it's too limited with the processor an memory.
I've had the Hero from the moment that it came out. Been waiting for that dual processor phone. So for me it will be the Evo 3D. I can live without the 3D, but the performance of that phone is what I'm after. I'll probably have that phone for another year and a half. With the great developers on this forum my Hero has actually been a gem. While my friends were going out and getting the Evo last summer I just kept upgrading the roms on my hero. The Evo 3D should be no different. I just hope it's out by June!
I've had my upgrade for a month now and nearly blew it all when I went to upgrade to an Epic 2 days before the Evo 3D was announced. Luckily, a friend of mine was a few days late on his bill so it wouldn't let me purchase the Epic! Haha
I'm can't wait for this thing to come out. With all that hardware I'm not sure I'll know what to do with it!
I have heard that it will be out in June released on the anniversary of the EVO.
Just came up on my upgrade today. It's a toss up between the Nesux S or the Evo 3d, Just wish they'd hurry up with a release date damnit

I am exactly the same. Had the phone since day one and have been waiting for a dual core since. Even when the EVO came out, there was talk about a dual core and I figured I would just wait for that. The 3D will have some flash that will be fun for a short period but the hardware sounds like it will be top notch plus it is HTC.

Upgrading Dilemma (Premier Gold)

Looking for a way to maximize my final premier upgrade benefit.
My eligibility just kicked in effective today.
Currently using an evo 4g. Don't really have any issues with it, but the upgrade is there, tempting me. If I upgrade now, it'll be another 22 months before i'm eligible. If I wait til summer, something newer and faster will be out.
Suggestions?
You'll be eligible to upgrade in 20 months... and like everyone will tell you: yes there will always something new as soon as you buy something now that will be better... if you need a new device or need to scratch that itch of upgrading then go for it... you wont be able to upgrade again for at least 8 more months (12 mo from gold status -20 regular upgrade) if you miss your current chance
My understanding of the changes was that premier gold could upgrade anytime in 2012 if they're eligible now?

There is no premier gold or silver anymore
No reason to quote if replying to a post directly above.
I know there's no more premier. However, my understanding from reading http://premier.sprint.com/premierupdate/faq.php#goldupgrade suggests that gold members have through the end of 2012 to exercise their upgrade.
Why not just call Sprint to verify? And if you can wait...LTE is around the corner...sort of.
Well the only phone really worth upgrading to right now is the Epic Touch 4G in my opinion.
It's a pretty slick phone, but I was disappointed it was released so late. The SGS2 European counterpart had been available for over half a year before it even came out.
If you check the development forums, the phone has a lot of good support and roms, but no true AOSP roms yet.
Unfortunately, the next Sprint flagship phone likely won't be out until next June or July, if history repeats itself, which it has over the last 3 years.
I've also been sitting on an upgrade since June, been tempted by the EVO 3D and Epic Touch before, but I've managed to hold off.
I just hope they at least announce something tangible about the next Sprint flagship device within a few months.
Getting ICS on our phones will make the wait a bit easier to take, I think.
^^Agreed. The ET4G does look like a nice phone, but wouldn't mind something with a higher resolution too. Lack of AOSP is a big issue on that phone too. After running cm7 for the last 6+ months, I doubt I can go back to anything else.
If I wait til the july launch of whatever is next, at that point I'd be 5 months away from the 20 month upgrade period anyways. Seems either way, the annual upgrade this time around will likely go to waste.

I am 100% in the exact same position. Got my Evo on release day and have been sitting on an upgrade since June. The Evo 3D was not the exponential leap I was hoping for and the initial locked bootloader made me hesitate. I thought I was destined to get the Galaxy Epic but LOS scared me off then Samsung's usual slow response to the problem sealed that "no go" for me. I'm sure they are both great phones but if I'm going to be stuck for two years, I want that big leap in technology like the OG Evo was. Now Sprint is updating to LTE and they are going to be releasing a bunch of LTE ready phones by the 2nd or 3rd quarter 2012. I don't see any "gotta have it now" phones currently and with this incredible dev. community, I can see and test all the latest software anyway.
Frankly I hope the next HTC superphone on Sprint will LTE ready, thin, have a quality build (take some design queues from the Evo Design), be ICS bug free, have a great screen, be as future proof as possible (yeah I know) with a quad-core processor and most importantly, beat whatever specs. the Iphone 5 ends up with. Well that's my wish list; what's yours?

The last of a dying breed 2013: When will you submit to the carrier for a new device

With sprint taking pre orders for the iPhone 5 and also including new devices are being sold, when will you give in?
As much as we upgrade the rom to keep up with what's on the newer devices, is becoming quite hard finding a rom that has everything included. There will always be a sacrafice whether its 4g, stable camera etc. Developers have really out done themselves with such great roms but its the evo hardware that drive compatibility issues.
How many will enter 2013 sending a happy new year text from the original evo 4g, or will some of you switch before making that new years Eve toast....
I'm up for an upgrade in November. Looking at moving up to the LTEVO, SGS III or Galaxy Nexus. Probably going to hand my OG EVO down to my son.
Definitely not going to anything that starts with an "i".

With sprint taking pre orders for the iPhone 5 and also including new devices are being sold, when will you give in?

I'm stuck till April of next year, but that gives me time to test out the sg4.

I can upgrade right now and I'm thinking about it, but even so, 249 + activation charge is still not cheap
Well my contract ends in April, so probably until then. We'll see what the next best phone will be around then for Sprint.
Get the EVO 4g LTE! I jumped the OG EVO ship and I'm never looking back!
PS. Screw the iPhone 5
Yea my upvrade is in april next year too :/
But on the bright side, I might be able to get the next evo!

My upgrade is up. Still between the LTEVO or S3. Its a real honest tough choice. I will say I do see more dev activity on the LTEVO vs S3. Just hard to choose. Lol

Don't know. Sprint has been slow getting 4G at least here in Los Angeles and I hate paying for 4G and not getting it. My friend's Verizon device simply flies. I know Verizon is a bit more expensive but damn their coverage is superb. According to some study I read online, even metropcs is beating Sprint on 4G. My contract is up in November so just sround the corner. Costco has some good Verizon phones and no activation fees.
I got a good year still left. But with the supposed HTC One X+ coming up, doesn't sound too bad with that tegra quad-core.
I'm always behind on my contract when new phones come out. I end up getting the about a year after they are released Hopefully I will be able to correct this soon, and yea I will probably be getting rid of my evo the first opportunity available
While the OG is getting a little long in the tooth, I still find mine quite useable and flash a new rom from these amazing devs about once a week. When development dries up here, that's when I'll start looking for something else. The gf is jumping ship for the iP5 [rolls eyes] after having her Evo for over 2 years. I feel sorry for people who are still running a stock, non-rooted OG with the Sprint base rom. This phone really shines once it's tweaked and modded a bit.
Holdin' out for the next Nexus and hoping it's a Motorola or HTC build.
I'm almost 6 months past my contract end with Sprint.... And am not looking to switch carriers. With development doing what it is doing...... I don't really feel an urge to jump. I switch back and forth between a few roms... Decks... Classic.... DK's Jackpot..... all of them keep me feeling like I have a brand new phone.
HTC vs SIII ... hmmm.... I'm following the forums here and watching who shows up where.
and while I'm here... Thanks to all the developers who just keep on banging out new tricks and new tweaks. It sure makes it fun.

Shh man just don't use the evo to record an unboxing of your girlfriend's iPhone 5 and put it on youtube...lol

I jumped ship about 2 weeks ago and got myself an Evo V (Evo 3D) on Virgin Mobile. It's a nice little step up from the OG. The OG was treating me just fine and I would have been content to stay with it longer, but I have some cracks in the housing (around the power and volume buttons of course) and wanted to decrease my monthly bill. I think this new to me but already dated phone will last me for another couple years just fine.
The OG is still going strong though. I just got it an HDMI cable and coupled with my datel retro wireless controller (it's like a wii classic controller with wii remote built in to it) it is enjoying life as a dedicated gaming device now. Ouya!

Ha, nah not me man. I just don't get the whole unboxing phenomena but I'm sure YT will be flooded with all the iSheep unboxing vids come Friday morning.
By this winter we should probably hear of some worthy candidates to replace our OGs but right now nothing is really tempting me. Also, I hate that everything is itching toward 5" screen size. Too big IMO. Just stop it already OEMs!!

November as well. werd.
honestly what dissuaded me from the iphone the most was the smaller screen. seems trivial to some, and my iFanboy bf thinks my Evo is huge. **** I'd get a Note II if they had it on Sprint, lol. S3 looks frickin sweet, though I shall miss my OG... I'll most likely sell it back to Sprint for a discount on my renewal. Sucks they're only giving about $60 for OG Evo's now "no respect, no respect!!"
as much as i wanted to wait for the iPhone 5, i bailed early and got the SGS3. for those of considering staying HTC; best of luck to you in Brick city.
