Bluethoot or WiFi!? - Wildfire General

Hi guys,
do you know wich from bluetooth and WiFi drains less battery on Wildfire?
I'm looking to a way in order to transfer my files from pc to the SD of my Wildfire and vice versa using no cable and keeping the connection always on when I'm in office or at home...

But the other part of the equation is.... Which one is faster ?
Fast at a higher battery drain could use less than slower with lower
Lol
As both methods consume a lot of battery I would go for the one that's the fastest, but whilst you say that you don't want to use 'any' cables, can you not plug your phone into the charger.
If you can put your phone on charge then it wont matter which method you use.

Use dropbox, can transfer stuff from pc to phone without using the usb cable. Uses wifi or mobile data, you can put something on your phone and access it when you get home on your pc.

dropboc can be used with bluetooth too?
I just realiza that in office I have to use bluetooth instead of WiFi for some reasons...

I dont think it uses bluetooth, i use it over wifi or mobile net, its not too bad and is a very useful app. You get 2gb of storage online for free.

My girls Wildfire (unrooted): wifi + bluetooth + 3g + 90% standby = 3-4 days
My wildfire (rooted): wifi + bluetooth + 3g + internet + about 25% standby = 1-2 days
This is much better as my g1 by same use = 6-10 hours (with a new original battery running cm6)

Using Wifi via WMWifiRouter consumes battery even when on AC power

Hi,
I use WMWifiRouter to share the 3G internet on my Hermes on my laptop. The problem I'm facing is, even with the battery fully charged and having the mobile on AC power - the battery runs out by 3 hours at max.
Is this normal behavior? Is the power consumption really that high when using internet (GPRS/HSDPA) and Wifi at the same time?
(my apologies in advance if this has already been answered - i tried the search )

I don't know exact figures, but usually running 3g/HSPDA will drain the battery pretty fast, using WiFi will do the same, both together and I think it could be reasonable to see the phone die after a few hours of constant usage. But, if its plugged into AC power, I don't see why it would drain at all, or at least that fast...I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in as well...
i used to be regular wmwifirouter user with my hermes and i can confirm that battery will jux drain regardless u put it in charge with usb or ac.
if i recall correctly, i think i see it somehere tat hermes has known issue that the charging will stop if it's get overheat and YES when using WIFI & 3G it can fried egg.
anyway, i hv quit wmwifirouter and stick to internet sharing with bt / usb
thanks for your responses... i guess than this is not unexpected.
and yes, it does heat up like anything. Also, sometimes it would stop charging as soon as i launch WMWifiRouter (infact i've noticed this behavior without WMWifi Router too :S) but usually quitting and restarting WMWifirouter or restarting the device fixes it.
The reason I can't use it with BT is that the signals in my room are really low, so i usually leave it in one end of the room where the signals are relatively strong and connect via Wifi
tried an HSDPA router I got from work, that fixes my issues, but I am still evaluating whether its worth it to purchase a router of my own

Wifi sucks on touch HD

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.
I've no such issues!
Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.
Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone
Next time put [rant] on the title
My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.
The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?
I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?
I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.
Guys,
Sometimes even cordless phones, microwaves, etc will interfere with the connection.
Cheers.
As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.
But it seems nearly nobody cares.

Stron,
Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.
Cheers.
What if it is capable of connecting at 54 Mbit, but can actually do only 11 Mbit? Nice trick. I hope it is just a bad idea.

Using the HD2 as a 3G modem for laptop: use bluetooth or the new Wifi router ?

In one hand, using the Wifi router is simple. On the other hand, Wifi draws more battery power than bluetooth...
How long do you intend to use it for as, in my opinion, both are a poor long-term solution due to the power draw.
Also, bluetooth may use less power but it will also create a bottleneck that will mean that you have to use it longer.
Yes both will eat power. Cable is much better, however if you have no choice then I'd use bluetooth it consumes a bit less power than wifi.
That said if you use Linux, as I do on some laptops, (and maybe Mac? I dont use.) you might have some trouble getting internet to flow through bluetooth, in which case wifi is better.
I would use WiFi, much easier to setup and use on the fly just as any wireless router is. In either case, I believe your best bet is to have it plugged in during use as power usage will be high either way!
The Wifi router of the HD2 only supports WEP.
That's a "no go" for me...

Why not? What secrets do you have on your pc....and do you live in an apartment block surrounded by hackers?
I can plug my hd2 into my laptop and surf the net via mobile web. But how do i set it up so I can use the hd2 as a WiFi modem ?. Even with WiFi on, it still uses mobile web. Updating my laptop via my hd2 takes hours lol.
BTW I have WiFi router in my home.

You have to have the WiFi router app. Google XDA WiFi router for Windows Mobile you will find it. Oh and by the way just because it is WiFi does not mean it will increase the speed. The speed is dependant on your cellular data signal you know Edge or 3G.
I have never used the wi-fi app, and have had no need to do so so far. Bluetooth works two different ways--through DUN or PAN.
However, I could see certain situations where that could come in handy. FOr instance, with a device that cannot BT tether, but can access wi-fi--for instance if one has an Ipad

Auto charging via PC/USB

Hello.
I connect my phone to PC very often everyday as 3G Internet modem.
I'm afraid, that this may degrade my battery
Is there any way to disable automatic charging via USB while phone is connected to PC?
Sent from I5800 powered by Kyorarom Ascendency 0.5.1
Nope. There no such option currently. But I don't think that such kind of usage would degrade the battery.
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
Dont know I'f theres such an Option but yeah i must agree with you cause this made my battery degrading more and more so now when i use my old battery and go internet via mobile internet it goes in 1 minute from 100 % to 50 % !
but yeah why not use mobile ap?
If you feel the battery is deteriorating, then wipe battery.stats.bin periodically. Or use Battery Calibration ap.
As mentioned, why not use the mobile to browse rather than connect through it?
I don't use mobile AP because I have PC without wifi network card.
Actually, I have GSM Internet, but from other operator. So, If I want to use it, I must change the sim card in phone, and then connect it to PC via USB as modem.
But I bought 3G Modem, so I won't connect phone to PC very often as before.

[Q] Phone hotspot, mobile hotspot device or 3G USB modem?

I looked through this forum trying to find which method gives the most stable Internet connection for these head units but I'm not having any luck. Which connection have you found to be most stable: the phone's hotspot, dedicated mobile hotspot device or a 3G USB modem?

I don't think a lot of people have tried all 3 options to give an objective opinion. I've only tried connecting to my phone's hotspot and my home router and it works fine on both, however it sometimes takes a while to connect. I would even select the SSID manually and hit "Connect" and it wouldn't do anything. Then I just leave it alone and it connects all by itself in a few minutes.
I haven't used a USB modem so I can't say anything about that.

Any hiccups or gotchas when using your phone as a hotspot? Does the phone get hot? Does it drain the phone battery even though plugged into the charger? What's the longest you've had the phone running as a hotspot at a given time?
I haven't had any problems with this really. The phone doesn't get any hotter than it usually does (I have a Galaxy S6 Edge). The battery still charges while hotspotting when it's plugged in to my car charger. I've used it for a couple of hours at a time with no problems. The only issue you MAY find is the battery drain even while plugged in, bt that will really depend on your phone and your charger so that's a "try and see" situation.

I tested it out today for hours (using phone as hotspot) and you're right - it's a stable experience, no connection issues. The phone didn't get hot and it basically still charged. I was presumed a mobile hotspot device would yield the best experience versus a 3G USB modem (because I saw too many posts citing connectivity issues across multiple models) and phone as a hotspot (because I feared it'll get hot and be subject to connectivity issues too), but phone as a hotspot is solid enough (and I save $20/month over the other two options).
Thanks for the input!
I've tried all 3 options and i've settled on 3G USB modem with Phone hotspot as backup.
in my radio it NEEDS to be a huawei modem or the radio wont recognize it (tried with a TP-Link but couldnt even see it).
The advantage over both phone hotspot and dedicated hotspot (and the reason i use this solution) is that it turns on with the radio, and no need to worry about unsecure network as it isnt shared.
The disadvantage is that it is a bit slow on startup, and looses connection from time to time (could be network related tho)

Yeah, that's why I was weary of going with the 3G USB modem option as most say theirs lose connection often.
The phone as a hotspot option is still working very well for me. My only complaint is that I have to manually turn it on every time I get in the car

Not the one i used... I needed to turn it on when i needed it (usually just before i started my car). The one i used had a power saving mode so if it wasnt used for 15 min it would turn off to save power on the internal battery (7h capacity)

Surely there must be a way to disable that and have it power on automatically when connected to AC. I understand tehe power saving feature, but it should be possible to disable it at least when it's not using it's own battery.
In my case, I use my phone to share the connection via wifi and I set it up to automatically start the hotspot when it's connected to the radio via bluetooth and turn it off when it disconnects. That way I don't even have to worry about turning it on/off.

I thought about setting it up that way too, but my phone doesn't automatically reconnect to the heat units Bluetooth when in range/in the car. How do you get your phone to auto reconnect to Bluetooth and how do you set it up so that hotspot auto starts after that connection?
Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk
It's actually the headunit that automatically reconnects. Go to the bluetooth options and check the settings for your device (after you've paired it). By default it should automaticqally reconnect though, unless you changed it, but check anyways. As for the automatic hotspot, I use an app called NFC Retag. It's meant to be for automating tasks when you use an NFC tag (hence the name, duh!) but it also supports some other trigger, such as detecting when the phone connects to a specific device via bluetooth. I'm using it since I already had it for a few things I do with NFC tags and it's worked like a charm, but I guess you could also do the same with Tasker or some other app.

Just another follow up - phone as hotspot is still very solid for me. The only problem is it cuts out temporarily at start of calls but cuts back in seconds later in a call.
Hope that helps someone

I have Tasker setup on my phone to automatically activate/deactivate the wifi hotspot when it connects/disconnects bluetooth to the headunit. The headunit then automatically connects when it detects the wifi signal. Works great and I never have to touch anything or take my phone out of my pocket.

Ya, I got it to auto connect by checking the button in the Bluetooth app. The thing that sucks is phone screen needs to be awake and unlocked for hotspot to turn on. Otherwise it just sits in the background saying "Authenticating..." forever and never turning on
