[Q] Application installation location - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi everyone
I just managed to boot android onto my HD2 and I'm loving it!
Question though: when i install applications from the android market, where do they get stored/installed? Is it in the SD card? Or on the flash memory of the phone... I couldn't seem to find a directory on my sd card that had all the applications I downloaded...
Thanks in advance!

they will get stored in the data file unless it needs some external access and then it will create a folder on the sd card

oh, do you mean that 1GB data.img file?
so it basically does just stay on the SD card then right?
i installed quite a bit of applications, but the data.img file still seems to stay at the same size..?

Yes, exactly. everything will be stored in the 1GB data.img. Unless you download additional stuffs through or within the application, then the application will create a new folder to store them.
To conclude, everything will be stored in your SD card.

great! thanks!

Installing apps
Since the topic is about installation of apps, i'd just like to ask a question about installing apps. I'm new to Android on hd2 and was wondering if they are cab files to install android apps like in WM. And also if there is, how do u install the apps as we can;'t access file explorer in android
Thanks

Messy sd card

I installed all my apps in internal memory ...
but all these apps created ''messy'' folders in my sd card ... making it even more messy.
Is there a way to ''ask'' these apps to install in specific sd card folder??
like \\sd\apps\data\
If you mean Froyo apps2sd they are all stored in a folder called .android_secure
Some apps also create folders on the SDcard for storing data regardless if you installed it on sd or internal.. Thats the developers choice I guess, where to put them.

there just app data folders, any you delete will either be restored when you next boot up your fone or next run a certain program so your wasting your time deleting any
They haven't installed on the sdcard. Like others have said, these folders are actually what the app creates to store data on. Some are images the app uses, others may be cached items or backups.
i think what the op means, is,if there is any way to tell the app where to put his data on the sd card, like on windows where you can tell a program where to instal.
and as far as i know that is not possible.
Thats why i have My_Music, My_Wallpapers, My_Ringtones etc. folders in my card, so it can be as messy as it wants, but my own stuff is there in one place. Easy to find.

Install apps on SD card, how?

From few days, i'm using Froyo 2.2 (froyostone) on my HD2 and now i have to install copilot on my sd card to load maps, but it always install on internal memory. Please help me. (in this build i can't connect via usb to change this with PC)
you have to understand how this whole process works...
Android is installed on the SD card, not phone memory. We're good on this point, right? But Android needs something to reference as "phone memory", even though its installed on the SD card. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the data.img file, right?
This file lives on the SD card. When you install an app, it lives in data.img (what Android thinks is phone memory). So yes, apps live on the SD card, just not in the way you are thinking.
I think I am right, but correct me if I'm not.

You're right but you've not answered his question, I think!
He's looking for a way for an app to be installed to the 'sdcard' not 'internal memory'. That is for the app to be installed in /mnt/sdcard not /whereever.
What he needs is this
I know that everything is on sd card but data.img has only 512mb, and some application use more memory. And bobjbain i've tried this one you show, but it doesn't working;/ but anyway thanks for the answers
Have a look at chainfires ADB Magic (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/chainfires-adb-magic/), it has a build-in packet install functions where you can define to install on sdcard.
Maybe this way is working for you. And you will get a really usefull tool as side-effect.
All you need is adb from Android SDK.

[Q] 1 Question (Not too hard I believe)

Hi,
After a lot of tweeking, installing and long hours, I finally managed to get Android 3.2 (Froyo Stone) to work and be able to reboot . Ofcourse, I am very happy, but there is only one thing I am wondering..
Every time I download an app or take a picture or basically do anything on the phone, the phone generates a new folder on the root of the SD Card and not directly in the Android folder. This is not a problem because I can just place them in the android folder whenever I need to reboot only and everything is back too normal acceptttt.. Most games and apps. They are still visible on the SD Card, but I can not play them anymore because I moved them and have to re-download and re-install them every time I need to reboot. And when I leave the folder outside of the SD Card, I can't boot Android because the Android folder needs to be the only one on the root of the SD Card. So here's my question:
Is there a way to automatically save all download/installs to the Android, insted of the Root of the SD Card?
Real simple answer to this.... stop moving the files! I've seen it on the forums where people say that the Android folder must be the only folder on your SD card, but that is just plain wrong.
Just let it do what it does and don't worry about the miriad of new folders that are created.
i don't think "android" must be the only folder in the root. just don't touch any system files.
in fact my understanding is android in sd card is kind of convenience. as long as you backup the file, you can do any experiments you want: moving file to anywhere easily.
much easier than nandroid backup

Some Questions on SD Card Organization (ANDROID NAND)

Hello,
I'm having some troubles understanding the SD Structure after flashing an Android ROM.
Fist of all, Could someone please explain what's the point on Partition the SD when flashing? I just cant understand... Is the OS Installed there?
i've got a few dir's in the SD (.android_secure , ANDROID , LOST.DIR , tmp)
Why are this dir's in there? Can't I have one dir for all this?
And finally, How can I install all the apps to a single dir in SD? Something like program files in windows.
I just would like to have the SD as clean as possible, but the OS just constently keeps stuff in the root of the SD...
Thank you very much for you help.
Thats normal.. all the phones have this structure.. so its okay!
Instead of touching system's settings, i suggest you create a folder "My Documents" or "My Folder" and keep your files there cause the root is gonna be full of folders and files from android if you're gonna install many applications

Android SD is deleting all new files on SD card and new files not visible

Hello,
i have 2 problems:
1. I formated my 8 GB card under FAT32 and i copied on Andorid. Then i copied some apps on the card to install them, but when i opened Files explorer in android, the files were not there. Then i opened the card again in windows, and they were there again!!! So they are visible in windows and not visible in android
2. I put back my music on the card, it was ok for 30 mins and after that all the new files on the card ware gone! Only the android folder was there!
What to do?
Anybody can help?
Am i the only one with this problem
From what I remember this has been a problem when using Android to move files to your sdcard, are you using Nand or SD?
After you copy something try rebooting and then it should show up. Way back when before Nand we had to do it this way as for some reason Android will not see the new file until you reboot.
I've restarted the phone several times, but still no files...
Are you using a SD or Nand rom?
SD. All i can see on the card from droid file manager are only the droid files.
Update: After moving the files on the phone while in WM, now i can see them in Android also... for now I will update it if android deletes them or something...

Glad you got it sorted out, yeah mounting your sdcard while running an SD Android rom has never been the most reliable. I would definitely suggest doing it in WinMo from now on to avoid any issues
