Improving Droid 2 Call Quality - Droid 2 General

Hey All,
Didn't see it here, but I saw a trick to improve the Droid 2 call quality. I saw it for the dx, and gave it a shot.
On the phone's dail pad, enter:
##PROGRAM
Passcode is 000000 (six zeros)
Option 4
I chose 13k, best sound for me, try different ones. You can change back anytime. Just do the same as above.
My call quality was muddy before, now its soupy.

hey im kinda new, could you explain what your doing a little more for me please

We are modifying our phones way of communicationg with the towers. it has made phone calls much better for me. You can always change back. Thanks.

what is default ? id like to know before i try this =P

The default on the Droid 2 is EVRC. Cheers.

I wonder what the difference is between EVRC-B and 13k.. ?
I remember EVRC-B for the Droid Incredible but I didn't have 13k as an option. It made a huge difference for me on the Incredible.
EVRC is the default and will work on every cell tower.. EVRC-B and I believe 13k is not available in all areas, some towers don't have the ability to use the other codecs. If it's not compatible you will hear a series of beeps when you try and make a call. Just remember that you made the switch and if you run into problems just change it back to EVRC.
I'm going to try this trick on my Droid X now! Thanks novagraduate!
I prefer my call quality creamy but I'll take soupy any day.. lol.

Thx ! Gonna try this wen I get off work...why didn't they just do this from factory ?

That's because it uses older technology. I have had it set like this for a week, and nothing but better sound. The other settings may be newer, but they seem to deliver muddy audio on my D2. Night and day for me.

Wow must say...big improvement.. thx !

thanks, this worked awesome... random thought... got to playin around inside that menu, and there is n option for "data calll" option 8...
anybody have any idea what that could be?
Also, just like the Evo (possibly all android phones ?) *#*#4636#*#* is another menu... not sure of its use for this phone just yet..

i was wondering why the call quality was so weird sounding when i first got the phone. will try this when i get off work. hopefully i will notice a difference

...hey guys, .. i would really like to use this code to change my call quality, however, everytime i type in the letters & press send, i'm taken to the Market!!!...any ideas why??

Could you tell us what mods if any you have made to your Droid2?
And what version it is (i.e. 2.2.0 or 4.0)?

Maybe I'm missing something too. First I couldn't figure out how to type in ##PROGRAM. I figured you meant ##7764726 (using the soft key dial pad). when I pressed the enter key, it made a call and the line said "all circuits are busy"
#EDIT#
I figured it out. ##7764726 and press the green handset call soft button.

New Droid 2 owner. Love everything about it except the phone quality.
I tried the ##PROGRAM thing and got to the options screen but I think they may have changed the order of the selections or something from when this thread was made.
Option 4 for me takes me to something that says "SID/NID pair" and I get a bunch of options for SID/NID1, SID/NID2, etc.
Nothing for 13k or EVRC or anything like that. And I can't find those options under any of the other categories either.
Anyone know what I should do here or how I get to the right place?
Thanks.

The menu option should be called "Vocoder"

I've tried press from the phone pad : ##PROGRAM and it actual dials the # instead of the hidden menu. Currently using the GummyJar 2.5 w/ GalxS theme, no luck. The other hidden menu worked : *#*#4636#*#*
Restored my stock d2 rom, I was able to get into both hidden menus. Anyone else can confirmed the GummyJar 2.5 rom?
Also, while being on the Stock D2 rom, I made the changes to 13k but would that setting stick if I revert back to GJar 2.5?

I have the same problem. Though I haven't tried that other menu yet.
But about it sticking it don't believe it would. I would think when wipe data/ factory reset to flash gummyJAR it would revert back to stock

I do not get that option in the menu. When I go to ##PROGRAM (password 000000) here is the menu I get:
01 User Activation
02 AKEY
03 Extended NAM
04 SID/NID Pair
05 Mobile P-REV
06 Test Mode
07 Data Call Settings
08 SMS/MMS Settings
09 HTTP proxy settings
10 Proximity Sensor
11 CMAS Test Settings
And that's it. I've looked under all of those options and there is no vocoder thing in those either.
Under number 05 Mobile P-REV it is set to P_REV_6 (there are options for 9, 4, 3 or 1). I have no idea what that does though or if it's related to Vocoder at all. Haven't played with this setting yet but am willing to experiment if it's generally believed I wouldn't brick my phone or something weird.
Anyone have any ideas? Is this just a thing with my phone or version?

sweet, worked great. much better that was the only thing i really didn't like about the phone, a camera fix would be great also.

No Speed Dial w/ Froyo?

so what's the deal with no speed deal in froyo. i haven't really seen any mention of it by anyone else. i've installed the regular foyo and now again just installed the clockwork version of froyo (after a data wipe) and both couldn't retain phone numbers in the speed dial list.
is there a way we could extract a db or file and manually edit our speed dial lists since it doesn't seem to work setting it up on the phone itself?
wow... can't believe no one's responded.
maybe i should rephrase the question/concern:
does your speed dial work with froyo?
maybe i'm the only one having problems.
You might want to wait more than six hours before flipping out. Not everyone lives on these forums.
actually i'm far from flipping out... but thanks officer
it is what it is really... i was just surprised is all.
Works for me, just tested it out.
Method that works for me:
-Go to Dialer.
-Hold the number you want to map someone to (in my test case, #2)
-When prompted, select the number you want assigned
-Exit Dialer
-Reboot phone
-Re-enter dialer
-Test call

Like DivinityCycles stated:
1. Go to Dialer.
2. Hold down number you want to map someone to.
3. Select the number you want assigned.
4. Check by holding down number.
or the regular way, but dont search for the contact; seems it doesn't work that way, just scroll to the person you want assigned to that number.
both methods has worked for me. hope this helps.

Interesting, running KaosFroyo 31, when I go into my dialer (ie phone? where I'd call somebody from, correct?) and hold down a digit it doesn't do anything w/a long press, even a super long press.
OK, just learned via a Google search that LP hides the "dialer" - are there dialers (free) on the market, or is there a way for me to access dialer on an LP phone?
PS - Should note I'm running an Eris w/2.2 Kaos 31 on it, but I don't think that'll make a diff
I'm in the same situation in which chimpsnest is (even a super long press to the number doesn't trigger any pop-up) but googling didn't helped me.
Any help from your side ?

I had the same problem on cm 6.1. I found that I had to push the number I wanted to assign, then hit the + sign on bottom left and the contact list pops up, then pick the contact to assign to the number. Hope that helps, if you still haven't fixed it.

Don't no about a app but i think cm10.1 has that option , u MAY be able to extract phone app and get it to work on stock ROM .
I guess it will feel strange ! pretty awkward ! although extract the phone.apk from cm10.1 ! though !
Changing system apks on stock will affect your ability to accept and install new otas and will further cause problems doyen the road. Flash the rom. Stock rom is overrated and I don't know why people want to stay on it and they want the features of a custom rom.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
My only issues with my Nexus 4 are...
1. No macro on camera.
2. No stabilization on camera.
3. There is a delay when starting a phone call where the other end can not hear you when you strt talking, using either T-mobile, Talkatone, Groove IP or Vonage.
the call vibrate is handy, better than having your phone glued to your ear.
Did you check the dialer settings? Open the dialer, Menu button > Settings and check Vibrate on Answer. Unless that's not available on stock (I'm using CM10.1)
And yes, this is actually very useful. Saves me the trouble of lifting the phone up to my ear only to hear a voicemail box.

People still use Voicemail box? Just tie it to Google Voice's Voicemail. It transcribes your voicemail as well as allows a press play to hear. No more of that "press 1, press * to delete, etc"
On the 4.3 version, does this feature exist?

Flashlight Toggle and In app call recording.

Is there anyone working on this?
Or close to being done?
ForceRom has them on the to do list.
But im not sure on progress.
anyone have any updates?
Also I know some international roms have in app call recording toggle, is there anyway to port that for sprint? I dont see why it wouldnt work since it has nothing to do with the phone radio. Im guessing it the rom it will just be the secphone.apk? If someone confirms that ill give it a shot and report back.
I, too, really want the Call Recorder function but it seems like either no one on the Sprint side knows how to implement it or don't care enough about it. I know the Wanam rom for the i9505 has Call Recording enabled. You could flash that rom & get it. Just follow the tutorial for installing ROMs from other S4's to our S4.

So I decided im going to try using thee Wanam Lite secphone.apk, and push it to Force Rom.
I am downloading Wanam right now, so when I get done ill report back and let yall know if it worked or not.
It will be super awesome if this works, because I know many sprint users would love to have call recording,
and this should be a pretty simple process.
com.sec.phone kept crashing over and over. and I had no signal.
shuld I get the com.sec.phone from wanam also?
Another Sprint S4 user had success & got Call Record working by flashing the entire Wanam ROM. The tutorial has been deleted, it seems. If I remember correctly, you're supposed to flash the Wanam ROM then flash a Sprint S4 kernel right after in the same session.
Perhaps create a nandroid first then try? If I remember that user's name, I'll let you know or maybe he'll chime in here.

I dont mind flashing it, but the thing is i saw a thread talking about it and apparently people still couldnt get data after, even after they flashed the sprint kernel. Also read it needs to be a touchwiz kernel.
i flashed it, and its working great. everything works on it except for data.
so can anyone help me out with the apns?
and where do I enter the apn settings on the gs4?

Exactly
I posted this in another thread, not sure if it works. My guess is that you'd have to copy the settings from a Sprint ROM and then manually input them after flashing an I9505 ROM.
http://www.phonebuff.com/2012/07/configure-apn-settings-for-android/
You should be able to get to some if not all of those settings, by dialing ##3282##. You will need to enter your MSL number. There is a thread here in the Sprint forum, on how to get your MSL. I used, get my MSL from Gplay and it worked. Just follow the directions Once in, right down all of the settings and then put those settings in, once the different carrier's rom is installed. Good luck, and let us know the outcome

1st of all, my main problem, was finding the apns in the wanam rom. I was able to find them in the sprint rom, because ##data# works. but when you go to the i9505 rom, that dial code does not work. I actually ended up getting access to the aps by using an app from gplay, called offline sim apn database. it has an option that opens up your apn list, and from there you can edit them, so I took all 4 of my sprint apn's, and entered them. there was 2 lte apn's and 2 ehrpd apn's. Well after high hopes, that was all I had. nothing happened. so there is definitely more than just entering apn's. I messed around with *#0011# for like 2 hours, trying to figure something out, but I got no results. so imo, we will just have to wait til something gets figured out. I personally am stuck for now,

If you decide you really want to do it, check around XDA for Rom porting threads. There are a few easy to follow TUT's on this. They may just get you where you wanna be
Stock TW has a flashlight widget called "Assistive Light" that is built in and super quick.

For a flashlight toggle, I'm using "Mappz Quick Settings" from Play Store. It gives you AOSP-style Quick Settings tiles, including one for Torch, that you get by pulling down from the center of the top. If you pull down from the top left or top right you get the regular TW Quick Settings and Notifications.
The "Torch" moment's likely csn be interested into the Lockscreen and prolly added to the notification tray. I'm hoping to finish the toggle for turning on/off the am/pm & Time today. I'll look I to the Torch toggle this afternoon.

[Q] ATT S4 adds + to calls, making them fail

Hi everyone,
I've got an ATT I337 running the awesome Hyperdrive ROM version 17.1. Several of us --but clearly not all of us!-- over in that thread have noticed a problem with incoming calls. I think there's a setting somewhere that can fix it, so I'm opening it to a wider audience by posting it here, in hopes someone from this group will know what to tweak.
Here's the specific problem.
If my cell phone receives a call from a known contact "Bob" and Bob's contact info (being a U.S. phone number) is 317-555-1212, so far the phone seems to recognize the call as coming from Bob. However, it reports it as coming from +317-555-1212. When I go into the call log and try to return the call, it dials +317-555-1212, and the extra + causes the system to interpret it as an international call attempt, and the call fails. Cannot be completed as dialed, the message says. If it's an non-contact number, the + is still added. IT's not JUST for contacts.
Let's say Bob leaves a message. The voicemail indicator shows and it says offers to dial *86, the correct access code for voice mail for ATT as I understand it. However, tapping that actually dialed +11 then my ten digit phone number. Call fails.
At the dialpad, pressing and holding 1 to invoke voicemail has the same problem.
In Contacts, contacts are NOT listed with +s, and clicking the call button for them makes them dial OK without a + being prepended.
So, this looks like some international feature is being enabled that I'm not sure how to turn off. Does anyone have any idea how to turn this off? Sorta puts a crimp in the basic phone functionality. Seriously, who actually calls anyone these days? But it would be good to fix.
Please, if anyone has an idea of what might be at the root of this, I would appreciate your help!
Marc
I am confused. Does this only happen on the Hyper rom or all roms for you.
Not sure how anyone else does their contacts. But, I always enter numbers as 1-555-555-5555 even if local.
My voicemail number is set as +15555555555
I never had issues--
I remember some talk of that on Hyper awhile back. But, never paid attention--
Only happens on Hyperdrive. Or at least, I can say I never saw it on stock. Hyper is the only ROM I've actually gotten so far as to run while SIM card is inserted. :good:
My contacts are almost all US based and are just ten digits, no leading 1. I did try editing the contact to my work cell phone by adding a 1 to it, and calling my S4 phone. It still was registered as +317-555-1212 format and return call didn't work.
So, it's not really about the way the contacts are stored, more about how the phone interprets incoming calls.
Try the 1+ and see what happens. Just do a few of your most used numbers to start--
Can you put a different dialer on phone and see

Just edited above, adding 1 to the way contacts are stored doesn't change the behavior. I can certainly try a different dialer and see what happens, but it seems to be based on how incoming calls are interpreted. I'm guessing there's a build.prop item or somesuch that needs a-tweaking.
Marc
so you changed the contact number to 1-555-555-5555 with hyphens
i ran hyper for quite a bit awhile back never any issues. of course could be something new--
i am not thinking rom or a lot more would have issue--
I did some tests.
On the phone in question, I edited the google contact for a test phone number. I then called the phone from that tested phone number.
It didn't matter whether the contact was saved in the formats:
317-555-1212
1-317-555-1212
+1-317-555-1212
+317-555-1212
In all cases, the incoming call was recognized as +317-555-1212, which isn't a valid call-back number, and return calls failed. Since this only happened when I put a custom ROM on, I'm sure it's something buried inside the ROM. However, I'm at a loss as to where to check various settings.
Gotta be something deep in there...
If all else fails you can Odin back to stock, reformat your internal card and reroot.
Under Phone Settings/Additional Settings/My Phone Number--is it in format 15555555555
Also, and I don't know where to check, your country code may not be set. I don't know if we even have that setting anymore or would it be in Build Prop.
Probably under ro.something

Interesting thought. I had gone into the dialer settings, and checked the Current Country... it listed United States of America. Then I stopped. But looking further it turns out that in the Assisted Dialing settings just below that, there might be stuff that matters. Currently my assisted dialing is OFF. The settings inside are:
Country code: 1
IDD prefix: 011
NDD prefix 1
City/area code: 131
National number length: 11
The area code probably doesn't matter, but I'm interested in the national number length. Ours tend to be 10. Could you please see what your settings are in there, and let me know if anything is different?
I can always backup (ug, safestrap backup), return to stock, poke around, re-root/restore. But if you could take a quick peek I'd be grateful.
Thank you!
Marc
I tried an alternative dialer... it acted just like the stock with the + thing.
I am on a rom that doesn't have those settings--sorry
Thanks anyway! I experimented changing the last setting to 10, and enabling assisted dialing, and it didn't change anything. Sigh.
Ok, you can still go back to stock with Odin. Or, try one of iB's roms they are very good too, I use them almost exclusively now--
Good Luck--:good:
Yeah. I've been back to stock a couple times with Odin. I've got the process down pat! I prefer the hyperdrive rom if I can work through the few small warts. It's just such an elegantly crafted piece of work. Worth the effort, if I eventually sort out the call issue. Appreciate your help.

When you made this edit did the Advanced Calling options go away in settings?
It's doing that on custom ROM oddly.
But you can still turn off Video Calling in call/settings, but can't get turn AC off completely unless you backtrack the MOD. Was a PITA tracking down what was taking AC away from settings menu and turns out to be this one single edit lol

AC = auto call? I can still turn it off and on without it crashing, but haven't tested if it actually disables if I uncheck it.
Flying home tonight. So I'll check then.

AC = Advanced Calling, sorry.
I think misunderstood my question.
So with customs ROMs I have ran into an issue where I lost the Advanced Calling and Tethering options in Settings menu (see attached screenshot). I finally after way too many hours, tracked the problem down to this one MOD (I had to find if it was from an app I was editing, then down to edits in the system, finally found it was in the customize folder and then in ACC/default.xml and even in there took forever as I had many changes). As soon as I make the edit and reboot they are gone, make edit back to stock and they show.
Everything still works fine - in regards to Advanced Calling, HD Calling and Wi-Fi Calling but those settings menu options just aren't there to turn on and off. I can get to an option to turn off Video Calling (see 2nd attached screenshot) which then leaves it into HD Calling state.
What I do as a workaround is keep a default.xml.bak with this MOD removed if I ever need to get into the options for w.e reason and they are only a reboot away.
Not the biggest problem, but very strange indeed. I made the same edit on M8, but M9 as well and never ran into this issue.
I was wondering if you had this issue as well after doing this MOD.

Ahhh. No I don't have that anymore. I think I never noticed it before the change so I was really confused on what you were talking about.

No problem my friend, I appreciate your feedback.
I couldn't figure out why it was missing and tracked it down to this one edit. Very weird. You should try setting it back to 2 value and reboot and see if Advanced Calling comes back.

Thanks for the directions on this @andybones - Verizon's constant wifi notification nag drives me nuts.
Just applied this to @santod040's Nougat stock rom (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...m-1-85-605-9-aroma-root-root-debloat-t3529732) and it appears to continue to behave as you expect: lost the Advanced Calling and Wifi Tethering options out of the Settings menu. I can still get at the tethering via the sub-menu 'Mobile network sharing' as well as the quick settings pane so good to go. Too bad this even has to be a thing. #&$*#&$ Verizon

Very welcome. I know of another method to remove the WiFi Nag and still keep the Menus correctly in Settings. It's actually a method that we used on the M8 if I recall correctly. The current method posted here was what we used on the M9, and strangely had no affect to Settings Menu, even though the M9 also has Advanced Calling. I remember testing this method out a little bit ago on the 10, and all was fine. However to be sure, I am posting a .zip with the edited .apk and a .zip with stock, to go back to stock, and also if anyone wants to see what was done. Simple edits of removing 10 .png images.
