[CLOSED/G2] Engadget: G2 Preview - G2 and Desire Z General

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/28/t-mobile-g2-preview/
Looks good.

one thing I noticed is that when the keyboard pops up, its not swype. I thought it was supposed to come with swype? maybe it does but you have to enable it? but if they advertise it as coming with swype, you'd think that would be the default keyboard. not that it matters to me since I'll install it either way.

The pictures are awesome, this phone is gonna rock. Come on kick ass multitouch controller.

Damn finally there's a preview out there. I've been checking cnet and the link you provided every damn day. This is about to own it up.
Thanks for providing the link.

was flipping through screen shots and their a htc logo at boot. looks like no google and g2 logo. backlit keys would be awesome as well as trackpad notifications.

That was a prototype model, you can see the engraved serial number on the front of the device.

Tight photos but still no indication that it will go into landscape mode w/o sliding up the screen to reveal the keyboard?
If anyone knows. Holla at me.

I believe all android phone have the auto rotate. Its just a setting. So we shouldn't have a problem with that the g1 does it

yeah the keyboard lights up. it has a light sensor for the keyboard lights. plus a proximity sensor... darkens the phones screen when you put the phone to your face for a call to save battery. the lcd backlight is also sensor based so it will auto adjust for you too. Those are all features on newer htc models. they come in handy on my mytouch slide. of course, you can turn them off too exept the keyboard light. that one is automatic no matter what. you can hold your hand over the sensor though, lol, but that is never needed. the sensors are EXTREMELY accurate.

Wish it was getting the noise-canceling mic like the N1. Came in handy while driving.

I wont miss the noise-cancelling mic on the N1.
Whenever people have a hard time hearing me while on a call, I usually have to cover the extra mic with my finger. That improves the sound quality on the other end every time. It never worked right for me...

spare parts was only in custom ROMs if I'm not mistaken. the spare parts app provided the extra setting of allowing you to keep your home screen in portrait while auto-rotating otherwise. auto-rotate is a standard feature in android

Are we sure that the phone has no "Noise-Cancel" mic on it? In the video provided by Engadget it looked like it did?

I'm sure now. Holding the G2 and no signs of another mic hole anywhere.

Guys, it is absolutely amazing.

I couldn't believe how tiny the box was, then when I opened it I couldn't believe how absolutely huge the EVO is! It is massive, and the screen is amazing! No lag what so ever. Everything is lightning fast. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

jealous!! congratulations man!
no it hasnt trust me..
I have asked the other people this question but apparently it was too much to ask for..
I just want to know one thing..How is the volume on the phone during a damn phone call in say like a car with the windows down?
For me HTC has always kinda been a bit low on actual in call phone volume and many times i struggle to hear with the windows down talking on the phone.
I'm getting the phone either way but it would be nice to know.
How are the WiMax speeds around Atlanta and the latency on 4G? Thanks!

Be careful not to get a ticket for being on the phone. In NJ that's a $100 ticket.

Quick question, how do you hang up the phone after each conversation if the screen is off? I don't think I see any hard call or end button like the rest of the HTC phones.

i've been meaning to mention to ya..even if the volume is low, once the phone is rooted there's an app available that allows you to up the phones volume levels (in call, speaker, bluetooth, and even headphone jack). So there's no real worry in that regard (ps if you already have a rooted phone, check out Louder Volume Hack...i love it)

Hey congrats on getting the phone and thanks for taking your time to answer silly noob questions
Qik video camera is so neat. I had no idea you could stream right to the web. You can also easily toggle between the front and rear cameras.
I've heard that Sprint TV doesn't work with wifi. Is there anything else, Qik for instance, that doesn't or won't utilize wifi?
And please tell me what the call quality is like when riding a roller coaster. Thanks!

G2 Loose Hinge Video

Since a lot of you don't understand or have no clue what the loose hinge issue is, I made a video!
I love my phone and don't start the "hitorii is bashing the phone" thread. This is just for informational purposes so we can find if this is in fact a defect and maybe help some people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd6DKd_gMO8
Thanks for the video. I've been wondering if mine had the problem. While mine does open up when held upside down by the keyboard it doesn't ever close unless I close it. That would concern me.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yea, **** that, that'd be crazy annoying.
Let's hope it's just an assembly line issue, and not the way it's supposed to be.
wow that looks defective, i get mine today, lets see if it has the problem
honestly, I think its just a non-issue and the way it was designed.
How often do you hold the phone, upsidedown, and only grabbing the keyboard side of the phone, if your in bed it doesn't take much to hold the screen and keyboard.
Mine opens up, but not as much as yours.
Like I said before in other threads. We know how a traditional slider should feel. This is a new technology so to speak and the first slider of its kind, so no one really knows exactly how it should feel.

If that's how it was designed, that design team needs to be fired.

I believe you are correct here. If its designed like that, then if its loose in a pocket or bag, it could open up a bit and get all types of junk stuck in between. Not a good design idea, if intentional.
as someone else said, it's part of the design - believe the mechanical z lock is referred in engineering terms as an over-center cam lock
and because of the limitations of the phone's body, it's at it's limit on the lock's travel on the closing side
mine doesn't do it, but it's at the cusp of doing it - ie very little resistance to self opening when held like that, and i suspect with time, as it loosens up, it will do exactly like that
i wouldn't worry about it - if you dwell on it, it's going to ruin the phone for you - i'd ignore it - ie "push away from the trees and see the forest", so to speak
my 02
I really don't think its a flaw at all. Who the hell is hang upside down like a freaking bat to send a text to their mommy? You pretty much need to hold the back side of the phone by your finger tips, than hold it upside down to make this happen. Sorry guys, but you can exchange your phone 50 times and they're all going to do the same thing. Good luck!

Woah! Capacitive Buttons!

Anyone notice that when you touch a capacitive button that the actual light turns off behind that single one? I'm running CM7 B25 Nightly- haven't tested it from stock. I just thought that this was awesome and also hard to notice. Or, eve, maybe my phone is junk and broken.

Does not happen on Stock, Bionix(curent ROM), CM7alpha2, or Modaco r3 as far as I remember. I can restore backups of each of those ROMs to confirm. Lights stay solid as can be.
However, if you like the "feature," I wouldn't consider the phone defective.
EDIT: I am wrong. They do, but it's exceptionally subtle and I had to jab the phone next to my eye to see it. Very cool, in retrospect.
they all do that... Nice touch to the phone I think. Little barely noticable things like that are neat....
I'm running the same build and mine do this as well; I think they probably did on stock firmware too. Kind of cool, but mostly goes unnoticed for obvious reasons.
If they can be controlled independently, than I think we have a prospect of notification LED's. These would work great.

OH SHI--it's very subtle. I just grabbed my phone and stuck it next to my eyeball to see the lights. You're right, they do go off for the splittest of second and you'd really have to be looking in order to see it.
Sorry @OP for misinforming.
Yes, they do this. This is also why they go black for upwards 10 seconds at a time on their own with the common phantom home/back button issue many are experiencing.
Mine are doing that. I'm stock.

Wow cool, just noticed it. Stock and root online.
Capacity buttons turning off per press is cool.
I also think one of the coolest things about the Nex S (and of Gingerbread) is the two finger slide show you can perform in the Gallery albums. Just place two fingers on any album and slide them apart. Neat effect.

This is a cool feature. Like wesbalmer says, it could lead to replacing the NOLED app for notifications! If I hold any of these buttons the light also stays off until I let go.
Not many people will notice this feature coz when you press a capacitive button your finger covers it

This feature was already available on sgs froyo 2.2... Just noticed it now though!
yup, i can confirm that
but usually our fingers are way to big and wide to really notice the special effects
i had to use my tippy tip of my finger to be able to appreciate the effect, else i'd have missed it as every single hour i spend with the phone

I am unsure what is going on I have no seen anything work with my eyes either with all settings on but here the light has to be just right.... I went to Sprint and they are well nevermind lol I just am trying to figure out how to get the Smart Scroll tilting any suggestions would be nice thank you!

There is not setting at all, actually. Just wait for the green eye which indicates that the camera caught your eyes. After that you can just nod your head up and down and it works properly.
Tilting the phone seems much more intuitive (and comfortable) IMO. Here's a good demonstration of both.

I got a headache after trying for a while to look up/down to scroll, so I turned it off ahhah.
The Smart Scroll doesn't follows the movement of your eyes, just does you do with the head, and it makes it uncomfortable, so some people who had reviewed the phone [mine arrives on friday ] said that the best way is balancing gently the mobile up or down, up if you want to scroll down and down if you want to scroll up.
It would be awesome that it just detected the movement of the eyes but it's probably to soon for that "technology"
yea they made it look easy but its not as easy as it seems oh well still a great phone!! lol
