Happy x10 user - XPERIA X10 General

Let's try this for a change, instead whining about features you wish we had, let's talk about things we like about our beloved x10's.
I love the design, the screen and the camera. I'm glad we don't have multitouch, yes its good for emulator and games, but I hate silly multitouch gestures. I enjoy being able to use my phone with one hand.
Please share you're positive experiences and features you like.
Oh and for the love of god, nobody use this thread to bash the x10 there is already too many treads about crap.

Good idea, lets keep this thread positive.
My favourite things about the X10 are:
1. The screen. It's bright, I can use it even in direct sunlight, it has a decent resolution with a "proper" aspect ratio of 16:9 and even with the "low" colour depth it works perfectly fine for watching videos, looking at photos I've taken and surfing the web.
2. The design. I have the black model and as far as I'm concerned it's the best looking phone out there. It has a nice B&O feel to it, it's pretty discrete and the minimal level of decoration isn't flashy or anything.
3. It feels solid. Compared to other phones I've owned or used for extended periods time I'd rank this in the top 5 when it comes to how it feels. The iPhone 3GS comes in at first place of course and in second place I'd put the HTC Diamond, it's built like a tank. After that it's a very close race between the X10 and the Blackstone but the X10 barely wins by not having any loose parts and proper buttons.

The X10 camera is the best i have ever used and i have taken more photos with this phone than any other

Best phone i ever had.
Best design arround, and as i see it only a new SE phone will take the crown.
Build quality: i read some were that it has the worst build quality, but we have a X10 ran over by a bus and still working, and one gone swimming for half an hour and still working. This has to mean something.
Screen is great.Big and bright.
Battery is also great. 2 days.
About the update it comes when it comes.
So all i can say that i am happy with my X10.

Wish the frame rate was quicker but same here. I find myself actually taking pictures with it! Can't say I really used the camera as much on any other phone I owned before this.
I have even taken a few with the X10 that have become amongst my favorite photos.

I agree with all the previous comments but I have to add one that will probably make some people gasp! lol
I actually like and use MediaScape. I like the (for lack of a proper term) "infinity functions" that link to Youtube videos and the ability to update or add album art directly on the phone. The ability to use all my existing playlists via MediaGo is also a great feature as I have a ZuneHD and now I can use the same playlists on both devices.
I am also very impressed with the battery life (since going back to the AT&T R2CA016 ROM). The original ROM was a little sluggish at times but since I rooted and removed the AT&T bloatware, the performance has been outstanding. Everything works smoothly and quickly. I also re-enabled the non-market apps by following the Captivate guide and adjusting it for the location of the settings.db on the X10.
I really prefer the physical keys over the soft buttons on most of the newer devices as well.
This phone does everything I need and most of what I want so I am extremely happy that I returned a Captivate and replaced it with the X10.

Best looking touch screen phone ever. If I have to take the form of non living creature, I want to be white X10s charger ;-)

I also like mediascape, and with the coming updates it will only get better. As lacking as uxp can be in some areas, timescape for example. Se have put forward some brilliant ideas, and pulled of a fantastic first effort for android.

This is by far the best looking phone i have ever owned, im a very happy with my X10. the lack of 2.1 is no reason to sell it, a month isnt that long to wait really.
Cracking camera imo
Fastest phone ive owned, not saying much since my last phone was a nokia 5800 Xpress music
all in all, happy with it, also i get satisfaction knowing im on a 2 year contract and the phone seems rather indestructible, run over by a bus and left in water for half an hour.

If a bluetooth fix came out i wouldnt give a monkeys to eclair, frozen yoghurt or spotted **** lol

Great phones! Makes calls, writes texts..
Nothing else to add!

As stated before, the design of this phone looks simply amazing, and the fact that it doesn't look like an iPhone (I'm looking at you Galaxy S) is a plus.
The touch response is great, and the screen itself looks wonderful, I always have the brightness jacked up fully just for this very reason.
One of the main reasons I bought this phone was simply for the fact that its specs more than doubled some aspects of my last phone (HTC Touch Diamond), and it shows. This phone is fast! I've never owned anything like this, having something so small that can run something that looks as good as Need For Speed: Shift is a great improvement over what I'm used to.
The build quality seems pretty solid, but I never really have any accidents with tech anyways.
And the camera, the camera is great! As said by someone else, I find myself taking more pictures with this than any other phone I've owned before.
Oh yeah, and the 3.5mm headphone jack is also great for me, I use it most of the time to stream internet radio in my car.
Also, once you dig your fingers into the framework and get rid of some of that monotonous blue, you can really have a nice looking ui on your hands (not that it looks HORRIBLE when it's stock)
That's it for now, I'm enjoying it!

How do u guys get need for speed to work? Ive downloaded the droidx 99mb rip from the droidx xda forum, but even after a clean flash it still says free up space on your device? Any tips?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App

I returned an HTC Aria in favor of the X10, and even though the delay of the 2.1 update is frustrating, I am very happy with my purchase. The X10 is much more solid-feeling phone, with better battery life. I also think Sony Ericsson has a much better solution for managing media than HTC. Superior sound quality and a better camera than either my Aria or my iPhone as well.

Well i have no experience with android and after many years of being a palm freak i switched to iphone 2 years ago. It has done the job well and it was only when an offer came up in our newspaper that i decided to order the X10 for my daughters birthday on contract. My work has just upped my handset to the iphone 4 and after playing with the x10 for 2 days now and hearing an update is coming too then i am seriously considering giving my daughter the iphone 4 and keeping the x10 . It is like having an updated palm back . The screen is Brill , market store is tops and the customisation it offers hours of fun .... widgets are cool ... camera is best ive used
Im One happy X10 user

lol cant really say much everyones already stated everything i love.
how do you manage to keep ur battery running two days :O plenty of people have said that but no one tellin me how. i just about manage to run it for half a day lol but other than that and the in call volume and updates i love the phone, best phone ive ever owned

Well, for me, what I like about it is because it's an Android, which is a competitor of the uPhone, and has more growing potentials than a Windows or Symbian phone.
Wanted to try out Nexus One, but as a multimedia fanatic, I read reviews that the music players are not really that satisfactory. So Rachael was an ideal choice since Sony has the upper hand when it comes to walkman-related stuff.
As for HTC, it's only natural to wanna try one, since there are alot of satisfied users out there, but the phones' designs were not as nice as Rachael's. (They even added a 'chin' to the Desire, which wasn't present on Nexus One)
So, yeah... Basically I only go for the beauty and the multimedia functions. OS versions are not really a big deal for me. True, I went gaga over the sight of Live Wallpapers, but then I can live without it. =D
The thing I like about Mediascape it the way the images were animated when they appear and disappear.

Hmm I guess there's no really a 'true way' about this, but I guess sucky battery life happens to new phones...
We all have experienced gradual stability of power drainage as time goes by. It's either the phone has grown accustomed to the battery, or vice versa, or that we have slowly become aware of how to avoid it?
Mine used to have it's power drop to 50% or more within 5 hours, without using it, and now it just drops like what? 3-10% by end day?
Give your phone some time. It will get better =)

I like it because its SE Design, only compnay which knows hardware design. I like it since its white color phone and because its running Android.

Are you happy with your x10? (YES/NO) And Why?

Please vote and post why you like your x10
And if you could have any phone right now other than x10 what would it be?
I own a Sensuous Black Xperia X10i and its one of the best phones out there. Though it has Android 1.6, it offers everything i want. It looks cool, works well, i get a good battery life. Am very satisfied with the phone
Yes,
Because I bought it! It has the design factor I am looking for, its android and its white and its Sony + its a perfect size, not too big like HD2 and not too small like iphone. It fits in hand really nicely. Since I like tech, I wished it had the most updated android as well but I will wait.
VERY happy with my X10!!! I sold my Nexus One running 2.2 for it. Never once did I look back and say "damn, why did I do that". Although the X10 is only running 1.6 it does a damn good job at it. The phone is sexy as hell, far better looking than alot of others out there imo anyway...and when 2.1 hits its gonna be SWEET!!!!
ps. I was all hyped about 2.2 when I had my nexus, when I got it ota I was very disapointed! all the hype for absolutly NO difference in my opinion....a couple extra useless options and did not notice any speed difference...so with the X10 just dropping 2.1 im totally cool with it.
No I am not happy with the Xperia x10 (I have the black one)
It looks cool as all hell, and has a nice display, but these problems are quite upsetting:
1. So sign of multi touch ever (Its important to me, dont care is anyone else cares or not)
2. I can hear people fine, though a bit quiet, but other can't hear me sometimes.
3. Typing on it is hard.
4. Screen collects fingerprints and does not have an oil resistant coating.
I find the phone runs fast, smooth. And I love the camera, but I can't put up with these issues.
Hope that someone accepts my offer to trade me either an iphone 3gs or 4

Typing on any touchscreen is a bit of a challenge with a full QWERTY keyboard - but withAndroid (even 1.6 ) you can install a plethora of other input options (ie. Swype, which is faster and easiter than anything ever.)
Oh, yeah, and I love my x10.

Yup was totally disappointed with the N1 the X10 is much better IMO. All the hype with 2.2 is overblown. On the N1 I didn't see the dramatic speed improvements. I don't even know what Google was thinking releasing Activesync support in the half broken state they did, at least in terms of corp. email support. I am curious to see how much faster the X10 will be with 2.1 on it.

Yeah I installed the HTC keyboard and it was better. I honestly think that the lack of MT is causing me issues. I can type with my wives iphone 3GS no problem and I think its because I am a very fast texter, hell I text faster than I type! I think I end up hitting multiple keys with the x10 causing the errors.

I can't say I was disappointed with the N1...but I sure was unhappy about froyo. While the N1 is without a doubt an awesome phone I love my X10 that much more. I can honestly say I don't want any other phone out there right now.

No.
Bought it when the multi-touch announcement came about, was on the fence until that. Was later greeted by the fact that it lacks it from a hardware standpoint, after spending my $600. Thought it was alright, could live without it. Grew more and more annoyed with laggy software, and then the straw that broke the camel's back was that I started having random restarts.
My phone is now un-usable if there is a sim card inside (will restart on boot), and is waiting to be shipped out to SE for repair.
What phone would I get if I had the option? Probably the EVO 4G or the Iphone 4.
NO
i got SE X10 white
i admit its sexy as hell
but
1- in call volume is very low , i barely can hear people when im walkin in the streets
2- lack of MT
3- low amount of RAM unlinke nexus
4- it lags alot of times
YES.
I bought the phone the day it came out and it set me back bought 700$. Coming from an iPhone that wasn't jailbroken before ios having an x10 was a whole new view on freedom. It was first laggy at first, but after debrand, rooting, new software, etc. I'm starting to like this phone a lot. Only lags on lock screen.
Browsing is great on the huge screen and typing on the horizontal keyboard isn't awkward like the iPhone. Tactile feedback is great too. The only thing ill probably ***** about is no multitouch. Can't play fps games like on iPhone. But its only games.
Writing reports on the phone in documents to go is great too.

Like the phone so much. I learn something new everyday. White has a killer looks. One guy who owns a 3GS told me after playing with my phone for your few minutes and after I shown him the demo movie that was on the phone, that he's going to buy one. Android Market is great, whatever you want your phone to do, there's an application in the Market that will make it happen...
I have the Sensuous Black too, and love it!
It's a Sony Ericsson, it's touch-screen, it's Android & it's a beautiful piece of equipment, and even if it wasn't getting an O.S upgrade would have still bought it. 1.6 gives me everything I need, so the upgrade is going to be nothing more than a bonus for me.
Yup, love mine with exception of bluetooth not working with my car kit. 9/10

I'm not voting because I don't even know if I'm happy with my x10. Being my first Android phone, I can say that I'm having fun playing around with it, and its non-iPhone-like looks allows it to stand out from the crowd. Somehow, I'm having regrets on buying it, but I think I would probably still feel some regrets if I had gotten a Nexus One or Galaxy S (btw Galaxy S was available to me at $0, as was the X10). I guess I'm just not ready for the Android platform, as I still feel that it's much easier to make phone calls on a Symbian(Nokia) phone. Also, the lack of Ovi Maps and PuTTy on my new phone leaves much to be desired. Connectbot just doesn't cut it, as lots of page switching is required when using it with Full Keyboard. Not exactly the kind of hassle a VIM user would expect.
My other gripes with the X10 are probably the common ones mentioned throughout the X10 community, like the outdated OS, MT, yada yada. Still, I'd give anything to own an Android phone which doesn't look like the iPhone.
Edit: Hah, this is funny. About 30 minutes after I posted this message, I received an update notification about Connectbot. Turns out the new update allows me to send Ctrl and Esc without having to use Full Keyboard, so I'm all good with VIM now
i voted no because i got the phone the first month it was relased. so i just used it for one month and the phone died :'( from april till now trying to find a solution :'( wish it comes back to life some day... now im really thinking about getting an x10min pro and move on with my life right now just using the crazy wild x1
Hells yeah.
Absolutely no problems with the phone. Tons of great features!

Where did you get it from?
EDIT: Just bumped one of your posts.
Maybe.
Why?
Because at the moment I don't have Wi Fi or a data plan, so I don't know the full features of the phone. I'm in a new country before school has started, so no contacts because I haven't made friends yet. So really, there is not much use for me except listening to a few songs and watching podcasts.
I personally like Apple's iTunes store to get applications and to easily transfer media to your device. There is no such online store for Android. It makes my life harder because you are forced to use an internet connection on your phone to get apps.
It also sucks that you can't make your computer internet connection (wired) into a wireless one for your phone to use. You can do the reverse, tethering, but no reverse-tethering.
Plus the battery life is concerning me. I'm forced to uninstall applications that I may use later on for a better battery life. My iPod touch has better battery life than the SE Xperia X10.
I'll just have to see after I get my Wi Fi working. At the moment I rarely even use my phone. Hopefully it turns into a miracle.

X10 vS Galaxy S vs Droid 2 GLOBAL

hello ppl,
I currently have a X10 but I was wondering about to change my device soon for a Galaxy S or for Motorola Droid 2 GLOBAL.
I would like to hear some of you, especially now that the X10 will be getting Froyo and Multitouch Officialy by the next year, that was one of the major drawback of the phone.
Is this trade fair?
Lenghty... Go make some coffee.
Ok dig this, I had the Captivate for 3 weeks. The short answer is I returned it because it kept turning off. Google Galaxy S Random Shut Down.
Now briefly, all I know about the Droid phones is that same as the iPhone, If you throw a rock in any direction you'll probably hit an accessory for it.. Man they got the whole 9 yards... From Moto Docks to OtterBox (Defender) .
Captivate Pros
Man that screen... NO FOR REAL! That screen is just amazing, And it's a Corning registered Gorilla Glass device. Go google that if you want to.
The Captivate has the most powerful botton in the known universe " Hearing Adaptive" or something like that. It's a huge boost for in coming call volume. Half way between low speaker phone volume and high ear piece volume. And this way you're not picking up everything in the mic like you would if you used Speaker Phone for the volume hike.
The two main cons that make me not miss it.
Turning off ... C'mon really ???
And those damn stock android Menu,Home,Back and Search buttons. I kept hitting Search by accident to the point of moderate frustration. I'm 5' 9" and weigh 157 pounds... I do not have sausage fingers.
Ok let's talk Pinch Zoom. Really I don't miss it. The Magnification buttons we X10 users have seems like a Button to Zipper comparison. We both can do the same thing just in a different way.
X10 pros .... And this one is worth at least 3 Pro spots of value to me.
The 3 phisical button... dear God sweet Jesus, Thank you for those
The 3 things I wish I could change about the X10
In Call Volume . I have had my hearing tested and I picked up zero decibels on my right and slightly worse on my left. It ain't me man, It's the phone. SPEAK UP [email protected]#$%^& !
Accessories.
There ain't none... Like for real. To find an X10 specific anything you have to hire a Sherpa and climb a damn mountain and then when you get there you're only going to find the OtterBox Commuter and Impact, We didn't even get the Defender
The Camera. 8mp of steaming ... Vignette,Camera 360 or stock, I can't take a clear bright picture to save my own life. ( Please don't derail this thread into a Camera Tips and Tricks, Read those and done that)
So after all this, I have run thru The HTC Aria (Tiny Toy), The Samsung Captivate and then finally the X10.
I'm keeping the X10 because out of all the love hate things you may find from one phone to the other this device has the most " I can live with" and the least " I hate" things.
It's a phone, It's not going to bring you true happiness. It's just gonna make calls and keep you interested in between.
Edit-
Battery! The Samsung Captivate needs to be charged everyday... Really.. Everyday and sometime through out the day. It's that screen I think. Imagine those Donkeys at the Grand Canyon. Now imagine them carrying Fat Sweaty Betty from Wisconsin. The battery is doing the best it can given the load it has to carry.
My X10 however could go a day or two between charges. And I use it on full brightness all the time.
oh nice answer, I didn't know about the battery life of the Galaxy S, I know about the lag and GPS issues.
Also the Galaxy S doesn't have a camera flash.
On the other side
the Androids from motorola all of them have the best battery life amongst the android family device and also has Dual LED flash but the screen is TFT not AMOLED like Galaxy S
EDIT:
For what I have been reading, the battery life on droid 2 GLOBAL is very bad, like 5 hours a day with normal use, that is very bad compared to the X10 with 2.1 that lasts more than a day.
I think the X10 with 2.1 upgrade has the better battery life compared to other android phones, even motorola's phones

well considered, well thought out answer. nicely done!
Just my 2 cents. I have the Xperia X10a Rogers and the Captivate AT&T (thanks to amazon.com's 1 cent sale).
Having lived with the Captivate for a couple of weeks, I won't return back to using the Xperia. For a long time, I thought it was AT&T that was providing me with crappy voice calls. Obviously, quiet and lots of hiss noise. The Captivate? Crystar clear all the time. Sorry At&t, I thought it was your fault. Now, I know it is the Xperia.
So far, I have not experienced the issues faced by other Captivate owners. Maybe the latest software upgrade fixed them.
But I'll tell you the main reason why I'll continue using the Captivate: Easy rooting and custom recovery (so far, I don't think the Xperia cooks have been able to create a custom recovery for the X10). Also, Google voice direct phone calls work on the Captivate. For some reason, it stopped working on the Xperia after SE upgraded the software to 2.1.
yeah, the X10 has a bad phone speaker and the bootloader still hasn't been cracked , and I would love to install another kernel on the X10 because Im looking forward to reverse tethering my phone so I could use my laptop internet
routed to the android phone via USB because I don't have an unlimited data plan.
Hi. This will also be long. LOL.
I own both an X10 and a Galaxy S. To summarize, I had the least frustration with my X10 than with my Galaxy S. Yep, I have two. Both unlocked. That's how things work in the Philippines. You would want to have a separate phone for work and play (personal stuff--like family and friends as our carriers here charge weirdly for their services).
I got my x10 first and I was very happy--lags were negligible and 2.1 really made it zippier. Twas my first Android and was on 1.6 and got updated to 2.1 like 3 days after I got it. Then my contract retention with the other carrier came up two weeks after and I picked up a Galaxy S. Initially, my Galaxy S was on 2.1 and it was OK save for some negligible lags but after a 2.2 upgrade, it kept freezing and dying, and Swype won't even let me write anything sensible. I was so frustrated to the point that I wanted to flush it down the toilet, if it wasn't so pricey. Then I applied a lag fix and it went all zippy and I'm happy with it.
Now for some real comparison
Galaxy S over X10
- faster operation (after the lag fix)
- way way better S-AMOLED screen, perfect for long movies
- pre-loaded apps like English Dictionary, Vlingo, Office Editor, File and Task Manager
- Multitouch (though the x10 will get one by March 31 2011--latest)
- cool slide out usb hatch
- front facing camera
- access to froyo (2.2)
- FM radio (not true for the captivate)
- in my case longer operating time than the x10, my x10 drinks juice
- notification pull down has remote control to wifi and others
- more possible to get updated to 2.3
- very light and easy to pocket
- better voice calls with or without headset
X10 over Galaxy S
- more eloquent UI / software tweaks (better animations, more premium feel)
- a lot better and stand out body design (IMO)
- three hardware buttons
- better 8MP camera
- better continuous autofocus (after 2.1)
- I love timescape over buddies online (samsung's own social media widget)
- more convenient location of lanyard eye (lanyards are important to me because I used to drop phones often)
- feels heavier and feels greater on hand thanks to the curves
- best sound (music, I mean) reproduction (IMO)
Galaxy Cons
- Soft keys (back button, and home if you are on captivate/vibrant) can take you out of what you are doing
- Less reliable operation due to lags and soft key back button issues
- Looks cheap, uninspired design
- TouchWiz UI sucks big time
- clunky messaging and contacts interface--shows less information at once due to big font sizes, probably useful for older people
- can't use samsung widgets when using launcher pro
- buggy because it's Samsung!
- low user interface quality check--you might be surprised to find poorly constructed and grammatically incorrect sentences on the Galaxy S's UI, thank God by 2.2 most have vanished
- Samsung Kies (syncing software) sucks
X10 Cons
- plastic usb flap cover
- poor photolight does not help night shots, in fact blinds people you are taking pictures of
- kind of laggy due to timescape, but I can live with this
- mediascape is kind of old-world and hard to use, best use poweramp / winamp
- pre-loaded apps don't add much value
- stuck at 2.1 for the foreseeable future, probably forever
- does not have much faster ROMS available due to the bootloader not being cracked yet
- poor voice calls experience until you wear a headset
So mostly X10 wins over the Galaxy S on the hardware design bits and on the custom UI bits. Galaxy S, however, is overall better in performance after the lag fix. But if you are too scared to do it, you will be stuck with a laggy and freezing FROYO phone. It might even die on you. It's all a matter of finding what you can live with and without and then picking that one. I haven't had any MOTOROLA ANDROID phone, but DROID 2 Global sounds nice, but it's bound to be heavier. Good luck on the choosing. As for me, I'm stuck to these 2 for two years. LOL.

are you running WINDOWS 7 or MAC? If so you can reverse tether. MAC supports it natively, I heard, while Windows 7 needs Connectify installed. Just enable your PC's wifi and it shares your 3G internet.

i own a x10i n my dad have a tmobile vibrant...
-all i can say is vibrant is fast, so fast, very fast compare to my x10i... my x10i lags badly... it takes about 15 sec to start up whatsapp from fresh start...
-the super AMOLED on vibrant is juz awesome... da color is so much better than my x10. the x10 color seems more like wash out... x10 itself plays very nice video, but compare with vibrant, x10 is juz that bad...
-even my x10 seems so crappy against the vibrant i still love it. why? because the slick design and is white... i dont like the outlook of vibrant cause it look so much like an iphone 2 or 3G...(im an iphone hater)
i wish my x10 will have the processor and same amount of RAM as vibrant and of cause the super AMOLED is very nice
on specs, the x10 seems like a real competitor to the galaxy s. every little part in the galaxy s is just a little bit better than the x10. but it does come at a price. big advantages the galaxy s has are things like froyo and multitouch. and though its coupled with a gorilla glass amoled screen and hdmi out, i consider thouse a bit behind the scenes. the x10 has a much better camera and a much lower price tag. the performance is alot better on the galaxy s and its a better out of box experience. because of its price, if the x10 had a newer version of android and multitouch, it would be a no brainer. but until then, if you havent bought either, id say save up a little bit more money and buy the galaxy s.
i would like to stress a few points. multitouch... ive never seen an android 2.1 device with a capacitive screen not do multitouch until now. even the g1 got mutitouch. dont you dare try to justify using the volume buttons to zoom. multitouch is more than just zooming, and its not good at that either. you know how long it takes to zoom in an 8.1mp image by tapping in one level over and over? when it comes to replacement android interfaces, many people will agree with me, im not a fan of either the galaxy s or x10's ui's. sonys timescape might take the cake for the most useless one ive ever seen though. only one company, htc, has really been sucessfull at creating a replacement interface. so if your name is not htc, dont think you can do better than google. gingerbread has been out for a week now, its really sad to see devices still running android 1.6 or 2.1. with the nexus s being a gingerbread phone, i can see other galaxy s phones getting an update right after its launch. sony really needs to atleast try for 2.2.

hi folks,
maybe i looked over it, but has anyone here ever tried to update a galaxy s.
i did and it's terrible!! samsung kies is like the worst piece of software ever!
and i wondered if anyone ever dropped a samsung galaxy s from normal standing height.
and dropped it so that its dropped flat on a hard(rock) floor.
because i have heard multiple stories about amoled screens falling (not so hard)
and totally shattering across the screen. i see you saying that x10 has TFT but i specially chose an x10 because of the TFT screen.
the screen of the galaxy is amazing though i must say, and i know samsung is always pretty decent in hardware. software=no but hey android is from google so no worries there.
i'd like to see some test of strength with amoled and non amoled

I know right, Samsung Kies suck big time. After I updated my SGS from Eclair to Froyo, the lagginess of Samsung knew no end. I had to install a lagfix then it was all OK. Question is, why can't Samsung have that out of the box since the problem has been popularly pointed out and not all users, I suppose, knows there would be such a fix.

Timescape is an app not a replacement interface. The general UI overlay on the X10 is much better than the Galaxy S in so many ways. Let's compare the built-in messaging app, for instance of these two phones. At one glance, you get more info on the x10 than on the Galaxy S due to the FWVGA resolution on the X10. Galaxy S also uses enormous fonts and pointless speech bubbles on their messaging app which results to less info being displayed at a time. And this is not just on the Messaging app. On almost everything Samsung-made, they just keep using enormous fonts which makes the phone feel low-res.
I do agree with your points on how sucky the zooming is on Mediascape. It is just not fast enough to justify the loss of MT. But on areas outside of that such as the web, no MT is not much of a dealbreaker. Generally what holds the phone down is the outdated OS, I agree. 2.1 is good and does a lot of stuffs, some even only present in 2.2 were added in by SE anyways, so you can excuse them a bit for that, but it's more of the power-efficiency and performance that you're after with every upgrade and it's a shame SE has no concrete plans for 2.2 or 2.3 on the X10 upto now. Had SE been up to date, SE owners would have been prouder.
P.S. on 16M S-AMOLED and 65k LCD, I don't see much difference. The X10, on proper LCD brightness is on par with S-AMOLED on normal lighting conditions. I find it weird though why at 16M colors, Samsung Galaxy S still dithers. I was expecting this on the X10, but I'm more than glad to see little to no dithering on it.
Hey, what about Droid 2 Global?
I see nothing about Droid 2 Global. By the way, it is the phone for CDMA and GSM networks both. And actually I don't remember any notes about Motorola family vs SE.
Returning to the topic, I have maybe a little politically incorrect point of view on the cell phone (and other technical stuff) design. It is about the culture. Not about "don't littering", but about engineering. Ericsson (and Sony Ericsson) has pretty long history that gave them experience. HTC, Samsung, etc are relatively young and most of their problems are rooted there. Look - overall satisfaction for X10 without the last technology bells and whistles like OLED or multitouch is higher, than hi-tech-packed rival's devices. Why? Because according to the experience, they realize, that it is impossible to be perfect and it is better to concentrate to ergonomics issues. The device should be easy-to-use, foolproof and hard-to-break. That can be understand through the long experience of analyzing how it works through the life of the device. Typical life of Samsung is around a year. I remember my friend changes around 5 or 6 phones (3 or 4 of them were Samsungs), when I used the same SE k790a. And it works fine for now. Another conclusion is to buy a flagship. Budget devices of any manufacturer always have issues. I know, all those galaxies are claimed to be top-models, flagships, bla-bla-bla. But I bet, some months of using reminds you my note about engineering experience.
So, for me, there is the only comparison - X10 vs Droid. And I don't see one. Sorry for my chauvinistic pigness.
the way i see it is
-if you want a keyboard go for the droid 2 global
-if you want an amazing screen then go for the samsung
-if you want to save money then keep the x10
i dont really see a point in upgrading to any other phone right now

Post reasons why you like the Atrix!

All these hater threads being posted about "I'm returning the Atrix" , "The Atrix Screen is horrible" and "The Atrix doesn't do this..." I decided to show this device some love. We all know it's an electronic device/phone first and sometimes things are broken or just not working right...I get that! However, let's not let the VERY FEW bad things out weigh the MANY GOOD things about the Atrix. Let's enjoy our new toy and give props when props is due.
So I wanted to start this thread for people like myself to post reasons why you bought the Atrix, what you like about it and why you might decide to keep it past your 3o day return period.
I'll go first:
What I like about the Atrix is the sleekness of it. The light weight feel in the hand. and The snappiness of it. One of the reasons I think I may keep the Atrix past my 30 day period is because I feel that if Motorola does allow the bootloader to be unlocked the devs will make this phone one of the most powerful devices out if used to the best of it's ability. And if they don't release the bootloader, I'll still be happy with it and still keep it.
I like that I don't have to have a charger at my desk, car, home desk, couch, night stand, etc. the battery life is great for me.
I like that the screen practically fills the face. I like the resolution and crispness.
I love the form factor. I like how it fits in my hand, the placement of the fingerprint sensor works perfect for me.I like that it's light but doesn't feel cheap or fragile.
I like that it's not tied to a pc like my iphone.
I love how fast it is, I have no issues with lag or un responsiveness.
I love that it isn't an iphone. I like iphones..I love my atrix

Ill join in.
I love the weight of this phone, its not heavy like most other phones. Its more like what you expect it to be like.
The phone fits your hand VERY well. The finger print reader is positioned so that if you cradle the phone correctly, your index finger is resting on the finger print reader a good portion of the time.
I have yet to have any problems of this phone slowing down.
The battery life is AMAZING! Now I might not be the uber smartphone user that has the phone in front of his/her face 24/7 (driving/walking down halls running into people) but I still use this phone a lot and it easily lasts a full day on 1 charge.
The screen is perfect, everyone saying that the screen sucks need to wait till software comes out that utilizes this resolution. A good 90% of the stuff on the market right now was not made for the resolution on this phone. Also the real estate of this screen is amazing. They utilized all the screen space they could on this phone.
I will also be keeping this phone past the 30 day return period since I feel that the phone flat out works right out of the box. Yea a custom rom would be cool but this phone does everything I need it to do and more without breaking a sweat.
+1 for the Atrix
I really love the battery life. I got home from work tonight at 6:30 and still had 50% and I used it a ton today.
Speed. Silly speed for days. I've not seen any of the lag I hear about and it never locks up on me.
Games are insanely good, especially Tegrazone approved games. Samurai 2 and Dungeon Defenders is sick.
I dig the size and weight. It doesn't feel like a brick in my pocket.
Love the fingerprint reader as unlock.
The screen is fantastic and realistic.
Camcorder has taken some really great videos for me. I recorded almost an entire live concert with it from the send row and it looks and sounds fantastic. I recorded from the car dock to test it and at 45mph the video was crisp and didnt' stutter.
The car dock owns.
This one even surprises me: I don't hate blur. Yes, I said it.
I like the blur widget options along with the standard Android widgets. I find that with the power of the phone that blur doesn't offer any slow down. I wouldn't like it with a 528mhz processor, but it screams on the Atrix so I'm good with it.
Wow, it is nice to see a thread in which people want to say positive things!
Just to add to what everyone has already said (I'm a big fan).
I already love the device. If the bootloader is ever unlocked... holy 'smokes'... it will just be like another christmas - in the middle of the year.
no dropped calls
better signal (probably helps the no dropped calls stat too)
much better battery life
good hi def screen
great speaker
fast as hell

This is my first smart phone, so I have no prior experience to compare my Atrix experience to. Because of my lack of experience with such devices, I know I am not taxing it, putting it through the rigorous paces that others do, or even utilizing much of its potential. But I like it, and I'm pleased with it.
It is very light, easy to pocket, and it fits my hands well. Sheathed in the Body Glove Mirage TPU case, it is secure in my grasp.
It has a great screen. Even small text in web pages is crisp and readable.
I love having an internet browser with me all the time. I used it today in my garden to look up information on soil preparation.
Texting on this phone is a dream. It has a great virtual keyboard. The screen is wonderfully sensitive to a quick and light touch, which makes typing very fast and accurate.
The phone is fast and delightfully responsive. There is virtually no latency when accessing menus and apps.
The battery life is excellent. I can use it all day without running it down completely. Recharging overnight is all that's needed.
LOVE my Atrix
FAST, absolutely no lag, 1 gig of RAM, great quality construction, GREAT screen despite what others think (just look at a hi res video), a pleasure to play with!!
The phone is great out of the box compared to how the Captivate was. This phone is a smartphone on steroids. Plenty of power, RAM, and internal storage for applications for daily use. The fingerprint lockscreen is pretty nifty. 4in is the perfect size in my opinion and the phone is nice and loud.
The drawbacks are the screen isn't as good as SAMOLED, Motoblur is kind of a bummer, and white notification bar is annoying. I am really nitpicking but there isn't too much to complain about the phone.
ok honestly, i just got mine yesterday and didn't see any of the complaints that people are making about it that would make somebody wanna return it, either u got a defective device or u just complain entirely too much(easy fix, return it for another one that works duh). they talking about speed test this and that compared to the iphone/inspire/evo/etc. but no phone is perfect and honestly this phone is better then all of them. Yea it's running motorola Blur, but motorola blur isn't bad at all, the phone that made it look bad was that weak backflip that had sooooo many bugs, i kno cause my sis has it. Another thing, people are complaining about the bootloader, the devs are currently working hard to crack it, and very soon will from looking at their thread. Just wait til this thing is rooted, it's gonna shock a lot of people that returned it for these future phones that come out, so please(not everybody) stop complaining so much and making people seem like this phone is horrible just because u don't like it and it's not 2 seconds faster then your ROOTED device or inspire, u may just have a defective device......
sorri about the rant but after playing with this phone for a day it kinda frustrated me seeing people giving up on this phone soooo quickly, but i like everything about the phone nothing has disappointed me yet
Coming from a (stock) Nexus One that was the best phone I EVER used, this phone is:
- sexier
- faster
- lasting longer
- much nicer to watch videos on
- impossible to fill up with apps (!!!)
It is in general an awesome phone! Sure, glitches here & there, however nothing that will not be fixed in an imminent update.

+1; I understand Motorola has a history of locking down their phones, and the Xoom is a different device entirely...but the fact they're giving that the option of a lockable/unlockable bootloader gives me some hope.
It took some time for the Captivate development to take off, but once people were able to utilize i9000 ROMs/kernels, there were a ton of ROM/kernel options, and almost all of those piggybacked i9000 development from people outside of the United States. So I'm planning on sticking with this phone for a while, unless the Atrix part of the XDA forums here becomes a desolate wasteland and the phone gets abandoned. As somebody mentioned in another thread, once this phone comes out on different carriers in different countries, there should be a lot more people plugging away on the development side.
That said, I love the hardware portions of this phone; it feels solid, the battery cover looks nice, the camera is fantastic, the GPS works great, the screen is solid (if not spectacular, yet), I missed having a flash on my camera and LED notifications, and even with the Motoblur bloat still there...it's snappy.
battery life, battery life, battery life. and did i mention battery life?
over 40 hours on my last charge. im pressed.
i was thinking about returning due to locked bootloader......but the fact of the matter is, i can still do far more customization to this phone with a locked bootloader than i could on a jailbroken iphone (what i came from). i loved the roms/kernels for the captivate that i had for 3 weeks, but even with that phone supercustomized and overclocked, it still didnt perform as well as the atrix.

Funny as hell...lmao...Good Post!
I'd like to second everyones opinions about the phone. Coming from a iphone 3g ill never go back. I believe when froyo catches up with better apps to support the atrix's dual cores's and att finally upgrades there cell towers' and the phone has only been out for a little more then 2 weeks I'm sure the devs here need more time to play around with the phone. As I'm not rooting yet ill wait for the gingerbread update and att to upgrade there cell towers before I start rooting. But anyway back to subject I am very pleased with the phone as I agree with all comments that members have posted about the positive things.
Ps. I am pleased to live beside a att cell tower mainantance worker and he has said that middle-eastern southern U.S. towers will be updated to the LTE network no later than this years 2nd quarter and he also made a comment about att working with verizon getting everything going?? But he couldn't provided any hard prof.
Now my fingers hurt thanks swype.

First of all, I've never used a phone that some people didn't hate. The Atrix is the best Android phone. It beats the Nexus S and it beats the oversized, overhyped Desire HD. It beats all the plastic Samsungs. The form factor is perfect. The weight and balance are perfect. The screen is excellent. Call quality is excellent. I like it. I write about smartphones and I use them all. This beats all Androids as far as I'm concerned. And like all Androids, it isn't a boring iPhone, and let's face it that is a boring device.

I had a N1 for a year and now this Arc, I am verry happy specially because it will get rooted in no time and get lot of roms
I'm 3+ year android user and love to see how it developed. the arc has the best screen and camera on a phone that i used.
I am in love with it I cam also from X10 (X10 was my first Android)
Arc is exctly what I wanted to have and settle for a year or more.
All of the features, great camera and design.
SE looks devoted to upgrades and cooperation with Google so...
Very good phone. Reminds me happy X1 times.
Still using X1 which was my best phone ever =) Apart from the classical Nokia 7110
But I already ordered my Arc and I am so looking forward to test my first Android =)
I'm more than satisfied with my arc.
My first phone was an Ericsson GH337 back in 95-96, and since then I've had plenty of motorolas, SE's, Nokias, a few HTC's (WM) and last my X10.
All my phones have had some niggling issue, but so far this thing is leaving me with nothing to complain about. I expected a lot, but it's actually better than I expected.
The call volume/quality and external speaker are outstanding. Phone runs smooth as butter with no lag so far. Screen is brilliant. It's THIN and BEAUTIFUL
My GF also got one, and is amazed how much better it is than her iphone. She's 100% converted to android now
Actually the only thing missing for me is email integration into timescape.
Comming from a Sony Ericsson Satio i am very very happy. The touchscreen is very sensitive and the phone works at the speed i touch it.
Videos play instantly where on the satio i had the green buffering circle.
Emulators and games work better and angry birds is excellent compared to the java satio version.
The only nuisance is the Auto screen lock which means i have to enter my pattern lock each time the screen blanks out.
The Arc kicks the lamas ass!!
Now that I've been able to get rid of the crap that Orange pre-installed on the phone, I'm very happy with it.
When I first got it, the battery life was really bad, but now that I've conditioned the battery, it is preforming much better.
I would recommend it to anyone, although I would tell them to go somewhere like Phones4U or Carphone Warehouse to get one without any of the operator's software.

Same with any phone though.
I'd say I'm satisfied but not completely so.
Yes it's a good handset and I like it but it's not perfect.
Unfortunately the poll doesn't seem to cater for people in my situation...
I have a galaxy s as well as an arc, both are excellent phones, I know this is going to sound crazy but I prefer touchwiz to sony UX. Im really missing the toggles on notifications shade, the smart keypad, swiping to call contacts and swype.
But the arc on the other hand is probably the best looking phone evar! great screen, amazing camera and is super fast. So back to the question, am i satisfied. Hell yeah!
I like it but it can be extremely laggy at times. I expected better really but its still better than my desire i guess

CyanogenMod will add that if/when it's ported.

Can be installed separately.
As for the rest of it, I'm not familiar enough with the Galaxy S to be able to advise how to duplicate such functionality.
the satisfaction is relative
satisfied :
+bravia trample all others
+fast charging time (bout 60-70mins to 100%)
+sound output quality (using head/earphone)
+smoothness
+design
disappointment :
-divx playback (my worst disappointment)
-stock widgets
-some software bugs
-goddamn media transfer mode (disconnected or not responding after some time)
relative :
±camera (ip4 details are better, but if under low light owns)
±battery life (sometime drained fast, sometime slowly drained)
±auto-brightness
±glossy finish (looks elegant, but fingerprint magnet)
but bout 99% ppl who saw me using arc had those 'wow' face
even my boss who is timid said, "holy **** man, it's so cool"

I'm still on the fence because of those things as well.
There's actually a fix for all those (widgetsoid, dialer one, cyanogenmod) but of course it would have been nice if we have those out of the box.
Nonetheless, Arc is light year ahead of all other phones in terms of beauty!
whats everyones average free memory during normal use? Im trying to figure out if this lag is due to my widgets as my defy did very similar with the same setup but I put it down to being a slower phone.
Does anyone else have lag?
my arcs going back tuesday, mobiles.co have no replacements and have no idea when theyre guna get some more in, ive 3 issues, when in a call the speaker crackles/pops like, second is my camera keeps going to a black screen and cant do anything till i reboot, 3rd is i get some pretty bad lag, id like to thing ive just a dodgey unit, but theyve no replacements so ive to cancel/return it, and either wait till they get more in or get it elswhere, other than that i love the phone

Just bought Arc S

Dropping my iPhone 4 for it.
I basically wrote a list of things I do most on my phone.
No order;
Browse and read news sites
Take pictures
View pictures
Listen to music
Email and text
Calls
Things I don't do:
Use barely ANY of the apps I get from app store
Play games
Watch movies
Prob would of gone for galaxy s2 but it's almost as costly as my iPhone.
Had htc desire before And it put me off htc - not keen on build q and as with most Chinese/Korean stuff a lot of software bits were unfinished. And am I the only person who didn't like sense ui?
Had Nokia n8 - phenomenal camera and good display of what can be achieved with smaller CPU but sw was limited no doubt about it. Considered getting one in anticipation of belle release but ultimately I'd be climbing onboard a sinking ship.
Arc is cheap, it looks good, great cam, great pic facilities and Sony UI seems like only a minimal intrusion on the OS.
Ultimately if you peel back the design of the galaxy s2 and the arc the main diff is in ram and CPU but not so much it would make or break the Arc.
Arc seems very underrated in my opinion.
It arrives 2moro maybe I'll change my opinion but I hope not because on paper it seems to tick every box for me.
Thanks for listening.
Great choice. To be honest i upgraded from the arc to arc s within a month. Purely down the fact i liked the white colour. You are right, though the device can be improved abit, it is under rated. On the contrary the iphone overrated. I had a play around with it for a week. I liked it but not as much as the arc/s. I have taken amazing pictures, sound is awesome. Battery life is for me great. 12+ hours with medium to heavy usage and all ive done is root and remove bloatware...implement v6 supercharger for extra smoothness. Ive also got link2sd but you said you dont use a lot of apps but id still recommended as with android apps you might get carried away
Hope this helps for reassurance that youve made the right choice

It does help thank you.
iPhone is overrated and now I'm outside of that apple/iOS frame of mind it's quite obvious to me.
The antenna issue is a pain in the balls (I know I should get a bumper) especially since I'm in a fringe signal area.
Ability to share (or rather not so) media is a big kneecapping of design
Lack of 'real' customisation - even just to set a custom ringtone eg.
Looking at it objectively it (iPhone ethos) completely goes against what I look for in a phone yet I was sucked in.
Make no mistake, i can be positive about it - it's a joy to behold (though IS starting to look its age)
It's fast, it DOES work in the way it's intended, iTunes store integration on the phone for me as a music lover is brilliant. It's gallery capabilties are generally pretty good. Email functionality for purely email is great.
But it isn't for me.
Lock screen notifications on iphone are very good.. and it does do what it does very well.. but the Arc does almost all of it just as well.. and many other things much better too!
I couldn't go back to iphone either.
Check out my 50 things the Arc S can do, the iPhone 4s can't thread...

Arc S is a great phone and very underrated. Root, remove bloatware, install a few cheap or even free apps ..... and voila ...... an absolutely cracking phone at half the price of thu iphone.
Happy days
Got it, love it but sending it back.
Out of the box (literally) it started randomly rebooting. I thought it was first time start up procedure but it contines, in fact typing this whilst it's sat in standby next to me and it's just rebooted on its own.
Formatted SD, reset factory setts 3 times, took SD out and tried diff sim but just reboots randomly, sometimes at 30 secs of use sometimes two minutes - no pattern.
Getting a replacement, not deterred as def seems HW fault.
Minimal time Ive been able to use it and it seems great
Can't get it collected till Monday tho will continue to update once replaced.
Cheers.
The arc is VERY underrated. I had never heard of it until I started looking for a phone with a great camera. I live in the USA though, which is why I had never heard of it before (good to see Sony finally bringing high end xperia phones to the USA now though).
My previous phone was a galaxy nexus. Only thing good about it is ics. The camera, speaker, etc are absolutely terrible and caused me to go look for a new phone, which led me to the arc.
Honestly? The arc s blows away the nexus in every single hardware category. I can't believe how great the camera and speaker are on this phone. And the screen is the best I've ever seen outdoors. It even looks better than the nexus super amoled HD screen.
I'm also surprised at how light the Sony skin is in comparison to other manufacturer skins. It actually improves gingerbread. Can't wait to see it with ics.
All I know is I'm sticking to Sony phones now. And yes, I've also owned iPhones (3 of them) and will never go back after switching to Android.
