From
Sprint Forums

Some are not seeing it available to download yet. I just tried and see it but 1st attempt it was corrupted, LOL.
2nd was successful and it is currently verifying package

It just keeps getting corrupt, good'ol sprint for ya!

Currently tried downloading it 30 times via network corrupt each time
Tried via wifi and it does not see a update
wish they would allow it other than OTA

Will it break root?
And i'm guessing it will remove any dialer modifications flashed such as no haptic feedback

can't the damn thing to download with out being corrupt. So only time will tell.
If and finally when I get it installed I will let you know about the root question.

man i hope this fixes my bluetooth pairing issues with 2.1...
hopefully if it breaks root someone can strip on that part and just post the rest of it like the one time before.

I've grown very skeptical toward any "update" from Sprint/HTC/SenseUI.
I've given up on the SenseUI platform and believe that the Hero is simply just too underpowered to run Sense effectively. I hated all the lagging and long pauses.
Now, however, running CM6 with the 9/7 nightly and Darc's #14 kernel and I couldn't be happier. My phone zips along quite nicely.
The ONLY thing I miss about SenseUI is the browser. Anybody know of a decent replacement that can do pinch/zoom as well?

I think I might know why your downloads are classified as corrupt.
If you used this root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 towards the bottom there is a section called
"DISABLE OTA UPDATES!!!!"

After doing this, the OTA updates WILL still download, BUT they will not pass signature checks to flash because of the code you just entered.

Dolphin HD is an excellent browser that can do pinch zoom, not to mention it can run themes and add-ons.

I've found that xscope is much better than both it seems less clunky

i bought a used hero from craigslist on Sunday and it had android 1.5 so I hit htc.com and downloaded this update then and flashed it over. I guess there is no root for this version then. I have an evo rooted to 2.2, the hero is for my kid with hopes of using 2.0.5 pre7 wifi router for him to link his laptop to. Haven't turned phone on for sprint yet working way to much. (called sprint before i paid for it esn is clean)

It says....

To update your Hero over the air:
Go to All Applications
Tap Settings > About Phone > System Updates > HTC Software Update
Select Check Now
Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update

Sprint said the Following....
You may not yet have the update for a couple of reasons:
- The software update may not yet be loaded to the servers
- The software update may be released in batches or stages where not all phones will receive it at the same time.
If you are not seeing the update, please be patient and it should be available soon.

Not able to see the update. It says my phone is upto date (even it is not). I understand the updates might not be there for me yet.
I have rooted my phone and removed some sprint bloatware and htc bloatware.
I have not put any custom rom in my phone yet.
I am a little bit nervous to update my phone. Cause I dont know what the update is all about.

The update is making its way through...I've been checking for it for the last two days...however today 9/24....I checked for the update and this morning at 6:15am the update was available.
The update fixes:
Slow response Phone Dialer
GPS Reboot (<-- I have never experienced this problem)
After the download of the update is complete the installation takes about 5-8 minutes or so...once the phone reboots and after you've agreed to install the update...the phone hangs for a bit on the Sprint Now splash screen....I was a little worried at first but I just let it sit....the phone will continue to boot after 2-3 minutes then you will see the HTC white splash screen for another minute or two and finally it will indicate the update was successfully updated.
I was aware of the slow response with the phone dialer and after the update you notice a difference...however I never had a GPS Reboot issue..but still happy they fixed what ever issue they found.
This may just be me...but after the update my phone seems a bit more responsive over all. But again...this could be just me.

Totally agree, finally pulled the CM6 trigger this week as my phone was at risk of being flung on several occasions. Can't believe I ever waited around for Sprint to fix anything, CM flies (but does not get flung!)

I'm still debating about CM6...I brought my HTC hero back in March-April due to my old phone dying....unfortunately the HTC EVO was still about 2-3 months away so I really had no choice...it was either the Hero or the Moment...I chose the Hero since it was a better phone in my opinion.
I am however upset that Sprint has given up on this phone so quickly...I'm still a little hesitant of rooting my phone and voiding my warranty. I've started to read up on rooting and CM6 a little bit as I am a bit curious of CM6.
Am I right to say that if I don't like CM6 I can revert back to stock rom and Sprint will not being able to tell...just in case I have to take my phone back at any point in time?
Also I've heard of Unrevoked and the fact that you can root you phone by just using this app....I've seen some threads that look extensive at how to root your phone...so if this "one-click" app works...can this be applied to the overall process of getting CM6 installed?
While I don't mind using Sprint Navigation or UI Sense....that is really the only apps I would like to be able to use....all other sprint apps..such as Sprint Football and Nascar I don't care about....If I get CM6 installed can Sprint Navigation be reinstalled?
Now that sprint pushed out a new update out there...will procedures have to change to install CM6 or rooting due to this new update??
I guess just a few questions..like I said..I'm curious about CM6 but have yet to decide if I really want to get CM6 installed...any feedback would be great.
Thanks!!!

I down loaded the update but it won't install, my phone is rooted with the one click app so that might be why it won't install

uk 1.5 update

This morning I just recived the 1.5 update, I am in the uk and am in the durham county Region , after 20 mins of exploring I think it is great. Has any else recived this update in the uk. Ps I am using the onscreenbord for this.post
I'm in Cambridge UK.
Woke up this morning to find update available. Loaded it while i took a shower.
Love it to bits. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Think i will now move over to my G1 permanently instead of my Touch HD. Might even sell the HD and pocket some money too...wow, money in pocket, G1 update..could this be heaven?
The on screen keyboard is what needed the most. I like the new browser icon too, never did like the sort of folder paper thingy before.
Only one minor thing i need now, Bluetooth file send and receive. No big deal though.
A lot of people in the UK have got OS 1.5 (Cupcake) now..
I got my update last night!...
Read the comments on here:

lol, just as i was about to do a manual update, the ota message popped up.
Only problem is there's still stuff missing, like Latitude... again! Oh well, guess we'll wait until next century for the UK to catch up, lol.

Just out of curiosity where any of your phones rooted when you received the notification of the OTA update? I cant seem to find a straight answer on if you can get the update OTA on a rooted phone or not. Currently my phone is rooted however I do want to download 1.5 when its rolled out in the US.
According to the About Phone section in the settings menu im running "kila-user 1.1 PLAT-RC33 126986
ota-rel-key,release-key"
Thanks
butlerguy, if i were you, i would better get JesusFreke's build. The OTA will not give root options as it is based upon the ADP1.5 basic build.
You may even loose root altogether, then need to downgrade to do the process again....
Well im not really too concerned with losing root at the moment. I havent found many personal uses for root yet other then using the openoverclocker app to set the clock speed of the processor which just makes the phone run smoother. From what I understand 1.5 seems to address the laggy issues. Just really need to know if im gonna have to flash back to a tmobile build to be able to get the update or not.
I like the upgrades. I don't like the interface at all. Too cld and boring for me. I wouldn't use the on-screen keyboard either (but it would be used by other android phones)..
So yes I will receive the update OTA with a rooted phone? Is what I'm getting out of this?

No. You wont be able to install it, believe me, i've tried.
I'm JF, RC9, FIRMWARE 1.1, RADIO,1.22.14.11
So if you are rooted apart from rc7, then you wont be able to.
If i'm right in saying that? Anyone?

I can't be the only one with this problem....

I was hit with the update before I knew better and it installed.
As soon as it restarted I can no longer access the top of the touch screen.
The notification bar, camera controls, web address bar, ect. there is basically a quarter inch dead spot at the top of my screen.
I tried factory and hard rests with no effect, the issue remains.
I did e mail HTC about this, but I'm not going to hold my breath on a reply, also the Sprint forums are down.
I installed the OTA last night.
My screen is not experiencing the issue you mentioned.
Might take it into a Sprint store for confirmation.
Good luck!
I am really enjoying mine.
I don't seem to be experiencing any issues since the OTA update either. It was the first thing I installed, even before my apps! I hope you get your problem worked out.
No problems here. I installed the OTA updates and have since rooted it as well. No problems.
3 Keyboards installed, Wifi-Tether(still working out the kinks) and its just moving along
no problem here either

Can we say it's pretty much safe now to go ahead and install the updates without worrying not being able to root after? Also did this update fix the SD Card issue for you? I've experience a couple times now that my card not being able to read until I remove it then place it back in. Even try formatting on the computer with a card reader but still no luck.
Both unrevoked and Toast's method still work after the OTA update.

Save a trip. Make sure it's a service and repair site before you drive. Unlike other devices, sales only stores are not able to accept exchanges on the evo.

You should probably clarify that a bit. With Unrevoked, you actually apply the OTA and then root that version. With Toast's method, you're actually writing a version of the old rom onto the phone, thereby overwriting any OTA update you may have had. Then when you apply Flipz rom to it, it wants to update but can't because it fails.
So if you want the OTA, you gotta do Unrevoked for now. Just wanted to clarify that for folks.

sph, since you seem to know what you're talking about, can I bug you with a noob question? Can I follow the first few steps of toast's root process (these):
- Power off the phone
- Hold volume down while powering the phone on. continue to hold volume down until you see the WHITE bootloader screen.
- After a few seconds it will begin to checking for files, and find PC36IMG.zip. while its doing this it will show a blue progress bar while its checking. (this takes 30 - 60 seconds to finish)
- It will then list all the images in the zip and ask you if want to flash. SAY YES
- When its finished it will ask you if you would like to reboot. AGAIN... SAY YES
- At this point it will boot into a rooted rom.
- YOU ARE NOW ROOT!!!

.....then just STOP and be able to run apps that require root access? Or, do I need to go through the whole process and load flipz ROM, which does not yet include the OTA update? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of Android.
Hey I'm having the same problem with the notification bar only, I can access anything else just fine, but I can slide down the task bar at all. I bought the phone and the radio shack guy basically installed the ota as he handed me the phone, although my friend didn't install his ota yet and his task bar rolls down just fine. He postponed his ota because of this. BTW only way I can access it is by home screen menu button.
Ok just realised something since I was writing this from my evo in landscape mode.. I can open the task bar only in landscape not in normal mode. There's a bug right there, guess it only affects random users.
Update
I got my phone from the Sams Club (Radio Shack).
Called Sprint and they told me I am SOL as far as they are concerned, I have to deal with the place I got it from since it didn't ship from their warehouse (sounds like BS to me).
I can see why people are pissed at Sprint, they don't give a rats ass if my phone is having issues and will do nothing to help me get it replaced.
The guy at the Sams has been great the whole time and told me he will call as soon as they get one to replace it with, which since they are Radio Shack you have to figure that Sprint stores will be highest priority to get more phones so who knows how long it will take to get a replacement. I basically have a cool looking expensive battery eater.
I have had one e mail exchange with HTC and they told me to do a factory reset which I had already done twice before I resorted to "tech support". The reset does NOTHING to remove the OTA update. If this is in fact what caused this I can see nothing short of a wipe and reflash of the factory ROM to fix it. I am awaiting HTC's second reply.
I guess a rooted ROM may also be an answer, but since this phone is having issues already I don't know that rooting it would help my cause with getting it legitimately fixed.
A warning to all reading this, Sprint tech support will only tell you to remove the battery to try and remedy any issues you may have. They told me that is all they have been instructed to tell people with Evo issues.

Same here for me with the web browser I can use the upper right and left corners in landscape, but nothing in portrait; I can also drag the notification bar down in g mail in landscape. I will update my ticket with HTC.
Please log this problem...
with both Sprint and HTC.....I have the same problem. I "believe" it started after the OTA.
i'm having the same problem. just got my htc evo with sprint today. the notification bar was working fine until i installed the OTA update. everything else works fine except the notification bar will not work. the only way to access the notification bar is from the home screen by tapping menu and selecting notifications.
my brother got the phone friday when it came out and applied the OTA update and his is working fine.
i emailed HTC i will post the reply as well if anything is different.
i've googled this and apparently there are a few open forums on other sites with plenty of other people having this same issue. nobody seems to have a fix yet.
just a heads up when i called sprint they acted like idiots and told me they couldn't help and to take it to the sprint store to have them troubleshoot it.
that kinda irks me because after ending my 7 year relationship with t-mobile i really thought that sprint would be a little bit better. oh well... you win some, you lose some.
I didn't apply the OTA, but ran into this issue this morning. Taskbar would not roll down...It would start to for a split second, then snap back up.
A soft reset seems to have cured the problem for now.

OTA update on G2 Touch (youtube player)

hey guys, i have the G2 Touch running firmware build 2.73.111.26 CL#69351 on T-Mobile Germany.
today, i got the message that a firmware update is available, that mainly affects the youtube player. it was 3,6 MB large.
i clicked on "download" and afterwards on "install now" and then my phone rebooted. after reboot, first i saw the T-Mobile boot screen, then it booted into recovery mode.
in the beginning, there was a status bar moving (but with no status, just some movement, if you know what i mean) and then the status bar vanished. as it stayed like this without any change for about 10 minutes, i removed the battery and inserted it again, then i booted the phone like always.
but now i don't have the update and can't download it again. is there any way to get that update again?
thanks in advance for your help.
ok, i did a full factory reset to get the update again, that worked very good.
i got the update notification again, and tried installing it again.
download works, after clicking on "install now" the phone reboots and starts in recovery mode.
there is the status bar, and it is working until it is about half filled.
then the icon changes, i suddenly have an explanation mark on the screen, the status bar has vanished.
then nothing happens.
why doesn't it work? what can I do?
try pressing back or menu?
no key works.
for some reason, since the first factory reset, my pc's adb doesn't recognize the phone any more, so i can't see the url of the update. but the update window shows the filename, it is "OTA_Hero_T-Mobile_DE_2.73.111.91-2.73.111.26_R_release5pon5e4vkwhssvb1.zip" if that is helpful for somebody^^
also i called T-Mobile support a few minutes ago, and they said there was no update at all since the 2.73.111.26 that was published in november.
any idea, anybody?
and for the record, the following link works to get the update:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Hero_T-Mobile_DE_2.73.111.91-2.73.111.26_R_release5pon5e4vkwhssvb1.zip
can anybody help?
Most likely an update to the Youtube player that allows High Quality streams. All the newer builds (3.XXXXXXXX) have this new version, if you can live without, than it's nothing major.
I experienced the same: OTA Update announcement - something about "YouTube Player" blah - after installation, my hero was frozen.
Back & Menu brought me into the maintenance menu: Reboot without upgrade-activation brought back my old hero. No changes done.
Very quick (~1h later) "first level e-mail support" from t-mobile: No OTA-updates possible on G2 Touch (...harhar), pointed me to website with old firmware update.
I asked them to contact second level technical support - as it was definetly an OTA firmware-update and I already have installed the older firmware-update: Answer pending, since yesterday afternoon.
I hope, this was no hacker-intrusion attempt. T-Mobile not being informaed about an OTA firmware-update by whoever, does not really fill me with confidence. Would be a nice little hack, if some illformed hacker found out a way to pretend an firmware update OTA and used the willingness of all hero owners to take even a small step towards Android 2.1 wonderland...
.g.
No, it's really no hacking attempt. The update is on HTC servers, that's why T-Mobile support doesn't know it. Will contact HTC support today.
ok, I just called HTC.
the guy who could hardly speak german but tried very much told me, that they knew of the problem, as I am not the only one with it.
he recommended to perform a full factory reset, then try again.
as I told him that I already had done this several times, he told me I had to send the phone in via T-Mobile, so they can fix this.
considering the fact that this is a very minor update and that I need my phone, I now decided to wait some more weeks till the 2.1 update will (hopefully) arrive.
maybe the 2.1 update will work, if not I still can send it in. also, the update may be available to install via usb from PC, so it might work better.
so it's waiting for 2.1 again
Hi,
In the Netherlands we got this update too. It fixes youtube and enables the phone to get Android 2.1 OTA, which will be available in a week or two.
The original HTC Hero firmware checks for updates every two weeks. Maybe the next trick will be helping you to force download the update (it worked for me to force the update):
Set the device's date a year in the future (for example 15 june 2011). Go back to home screen and probably the update wil appear in your screen.
Let us know if it worked for you..
It worked for me. As soon as I changed the date I received the update.
Thanks for the solution.
Is it just me thats wondering why.. if they are going to release a 2.1 update soon... are they packaging in an update for youtube in this ota?

I guess more people where complaining about the broken Youtube player than about the 2.1 update (at least it was more visible for our customers). Having this fixed and declared on the support site makes life easier for customer support...it is stupid I know, but the average user is that dump.

Sure.. but how many months to wait now.. otherwise why update youtube at all?
Rumours are saying that it's coming the 18th and I think that pretty believable because we have got that update today...
And I don't know anything about youtube update ^^ maybe they wanted to give us something instead of an empty update ^^
Yeah, it makes perfect sense.
There was no "System updates ..." item in the phone status, before this update. I don't see why HTC would update the FOTA client if they didn't actually plan on sending us the 2.1 update soon. Probably takes a few days though.
Be patient
Hi,
I did the clock tip and got immediatly the update message. Download and installation went fine. Rebooting took about 10 minutes, so be patient and let the update do its work.

[Q] disabling the ota update to froyo

Hi,
I travel a lot and do not want to do this froyo update on my vibrant for 2-3 months. T-mobile's answer is to "keep hitting postpone every day". It appears there is no way to actually disable the update other than to keep postponing it. I rooted my phone to see if I could stop the ota update.
I found a few things:
1) /system/etc/cacert.txt has t-mobile as a global CA. removing this breaks lots of the stock apps. Does this mean t-mobile is doing man-in-the-middle on all ssl connections? If so, horrid. However, it doesn't stop the ota update.
2) I see a blue and red double arrow in my notification bar stating the update is pending, but nothing in "ps" output that indicates a running application for it.
3) pulling the tmobile sim card and either leaving it out or putting in another sim card (from say etisalat) doesn't stop the update notification. This could mean the update is already on my phone, i just have to find it and delete it.
Thoughts?
The update you are getting notification for is not froyo. Also, there is a 50/50 chance that it will semi brick your phone. Good part is the update will unlock your hardware for download mode and recovery mode.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
it seems a double-restart with sim removed means the "DM service" doesn't start, so I don't get the update notifications anymore.
Why wouldn't you want the update? You are doing yourself a disservice.

The main reason is I'm traveling for the next 2-3 months, and cannot afford to have the phone broken.
I'd like to wait to see what others experience, and possibly wait for a changelog to appear so I can see what's changed between versions.
There have been many threads about the experience and the changelog has been posted. Most of the changes are very positive including reducing the lag on the device and fixing the GPS.
Just search around a little bit and you will find everything you need. If you still have questions, let me know.

There is no MIM on SSL connections. That is the certificate that the stock apps are signed with.

Hi,
My best guess, and I suggested this in another thread about disabling the update, is to go into /system/app and rename wssyncmldm.apk and wssyncmlnps.apk both to .bak, then reboot into recovery, wipe cache, dalvik cache, fix permissions, and reboot.
hope it helps, cheers, =)
I found out 2 things:
1) /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip will disable the update, because the ssl cert check fails.
2) DO NOT rename /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks (the cert keystore) or the system won't boot. I apparently pushed a bad cert keystore to the device and well, soft-bricked it. Everything just goes bad from there.
Everything was so simple with the nexus one. I lost my nexus one when it fell out of my pocket on the escalators at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong. Let me tell you, the nexus one won't survive a 5 story fall onto marble floors.
I was running bionix1.7 when the update came out and never saw a notification for it. Just run a custom rom and it'll probably sidesteap the update and improve the overall quality of your phone.

I ended up following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798125 and doing the update myself and keeping root. I uninstalled all the crap tmobile and samsung install to stalk and lie to me. This phone is the new Dell computer, loaded with crap and no clean OS to install for yourself.

WP7 small update coming now, more to follow...

Just saw this link on Facebook. Thought I would share here...

From what I remember about the update scheduling, MS can push updates past carrier certification if the carrier delays until the next update is ready. I would love to see MS use these little micro-updates to game that system. Anything that helps to reduce AT&T's interference in the use of its own network is fine by me.

That would be pretty tricky, but I would think MS would at least hold off until carriers have shown a pattern of delays.
the only problem is that it isn't really an update. It's an update to help out the future updates. Wtf is microsoft doing? This OS is developing slowly, and their communication is horrible. I feel like I'm going to want a new phone by the time this mythical update shows up (that hopefully corrects all the flaws)
Focus
Everyone with a Focus should read the thread in the Windows Phone Forum very carefully and take a wait and see attitude before updating. Not looking good for the Omnia 7 and starting to look bad for the Focus.
Samsung owners claim Windows Phone 7 update has bricked their devices.
I personally had a Samsung Intrepid v6.5 that after an update, it became a brick. There was NO way for me to go back to the previous version either.
Anyone got the update?
Has anyone got the update yet or a notification of it? I checked my wifes phone and it said no update through the phone or zune. It's completely stock (except the memory) so I'm hoping it won't have any problems.
Edit - Nevermind. I guess it's staged over some time. It also shows her having the firmware that is having so many problems so maybe waiting isn't a bad idea.
Version #
How do you know if you recived the update? I hook up my phone yesterday, and it started synching stuff that has been on my phone for months. The items were never changed since I installed on my phone. I check in the Zune software and it says I'm up to date. Do you get a message that says, "Hey stupid, here's an update"? MS doesn't seem to clear and what is supposed to happen. Do you get a text, or a number in your Marketplace tile, or what?
My firmware version ends in JJ1 for PDA, Phone and CSC.
I got that from dialing *#1234# from the diagnostic app.
I have not seen the notice for the update yet.
Anyone else with a Focus seen the update yet?
Let down in wireless promises
I'm am so let down with Carriers & Manufacturers promising updates! I had the Captivate when it came out, and was happy with the expection of 2.2 Froyo being released. As I was waiting I rooted the phone and ran a developers version of 2.2, which was great. In Jan I decided to swap for the Focus because it was just a simplier phone to use. I noticed on the MS website it even notated an expected release of an update in Jan.
All in all, when you buy a phone I would recommend not giving into the impulse of buying it just because they say updates are coming, especially with Samsung. I do love both phones, but this is just terrible. Seems like technology has gotten to the point that if what you have isn't ready NOW, then it's already old news and updates are just a fantasy.
For gods sake, now there's the new 4G HTC Inspire running Froyo promising Gingerbread.
Actually, the only thing I wish I could do on the Focus was watch youtube videos in high quality using 3G... Hahaha... I guess making ring tones too, but that's it!

Just tried it. I don't see anything saying firmware. The first three all have JJ1. I've been checking plenty of WP sites. I haven't seen anyone on ATT get an update.
AT&T NOT holding back update
I had to speak to the Technical Support area of the AT&T Warranty Center today. All of a sudden, after 2 months, the battery icon at the top of the page ehibited the following symptoms:
. Blinks on and off, sometimes with the "plug" showing on the battery icon even though the phone is not on the charger. Blinks about once every 2 seconds.
. "Beeps" everytime it blinks.
. Screen will not turn off because this icon is blinking.
I was told that Technical Support had a meeting yesterday and that this is a know issue with WP7 by Microsoft and that the upcoming late February/early March update will contain a fix for this issue.
I asked why I had not recived an update notification and whether AT&T was holding up this update. The TS person said absolutely not, especially since this update will contain bug fixes that affect currently released phone models. AT&T is not holding back the update.
This person also told me that the issue is suspected to be caused by a virus that enters the phone when browsing the Internet and that warranty does not cover viruses. Well, that set me off. Their phone, their OS, their browser. I'll address this to be sure.
But, the update is coming, contains fixes, and AT&T is NOT holding it back.

lol. Virus entering the phone via web browsing in wp7. Don't fall for that.

No, not a chance. I already contacted the store manager who I purchased the phone from and he has guaranteed a warranty replacement. I am still going to wait for the update to see if what the ST&T TS person was speaking the truth. If I have to, I'll take the SIM out and put it back in my FUZE running 6.5.x.
I received my updated today ! Window poped up and said there was an update. When I went to check the market place, there were no apps there were ready for up date. One would have to think the small update for the OS was sent out. How does one check ?
Sync through Zune.
Oh ya.... the OS update is not OTA (over the air) like the apps update. I will go sync now.
okay seems the update was pulled after some issues. I was rolled out again this week !

Seems there still might be an issue according to the article. I plugged my phone into laptop this morning after receiving another notification yesterday. It seems to be installing now. Fingers are crossed for no issues.
EDIT: OS Version after update reads 7.0.7008.0
The update took about 10 minutes.
