Safe to kill programs and an idea for rom devolopers. - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi.
Do we have a list for programs and services which are safe to close/kill?
For example I use handcent message app and when I kill the samsung messaging app nothing happens and phone continues to work perfectly.
Maybe one of the rom devolopers can disable these apps and saves us from using kill apps

How to stop apps from restarting

Hello,
Not sure if this is possible in Android but, can you kill/exit for good an android app?
I keep using Adv Task Killer but the damn apps keep on restarting after killed...can anyone advise? Its driving me nuts! I liked that tweak in winmo where you long press x and the program is gone for good.
Thanks for enlightening me!

No one knows the solution?
Startup Auditor
I donwnloaded a program called Startup Auditor from the market. It will allow you to disable a program on startup and keep it diabled.
I also deleted the Footprints app (useless) by getting the root explorer app (costs money) that will allow you to delete the app. This is the only explorer I have found that will let you uninstall pre-installed apps.
**BE CAREFUL** removing some apps like Friendstream, mail, messages, etc could mess up your phone, because they are tied into the system.
Google it thats how I figured it out.
Search in market for developer "Gpc". They have a tool called SuperManager for free with great functions such as Root Explorer. In market you will find it with a desktopsymbol icon and japanese letters! no worrys.. whole app can be set to english :d Second entry i think if you search for Gpc. No need to pay for rootexplorer root/data/app/ think there are the apps like footprints you want to deinstall/delete
attached it

This always happens, the easiest way to do it is just to go the manage application in the settings and force the close, the app should not restart after this regardless what the task killer says. Some apps will restart too if you have background data on within the background.
Hope this helps.
I use autostarts. Its capable of stopping the app from loading during boot, and you can block recurring starts through the options. Easy to use. Click on app then disable. It will boot if you run the app, but will not autorun on startup.
You should NOT USE any app killers the are bad for the battery and the memory dont even install them. Next time you update or change your build leave the app killers out like the DEV intended or they would have added 1 for you
Stop looking at the running apps list. Problem solved. If them sitting in that list worries you then uninstall the app. Android isn't winmo, having apps sitting in that list is nothing to worry about.

Hard-code so /system apps dont auto-start?

Is there any way to hard code (when building a custom ROM) the OS so that certain pre-installed system apps DONT auto-start on boot-up, or constantly start while the OS is running (restart themselves and stay running)? I am trying to stop things like Google Maps from starting on its own, unless I WANT to start it. Another example is not auto-starting the GMAIL or MAIL apps, until I open them. Same deal. Possible?
Go into settings then click on the button labeled "Applications". Then click on "Running" and click on the apps you want to stop running and click "Force Stop" and they will stop running until you reopen them again. Otherwise, download ATK.

Or you can use a program called autostarts which can be found in market. Not sure if you can disable the autostart when building ROM.

Apps running and cannot not be killed

I have Skyraider 2.5.2 with Advanced Task Killer installed. I use the Advanced Task Killer widget on my homescreen for quick task killing. However, ever since I rooted and installed leaked roms, apps like The Weather Channel, Google Maps and Sykpe Mobile keep coming back after being killed. I don't even run those apps that much. I've played with Task Killer setting and still cannot get the apps to stay dead. Any suggestions for getting rid of zombie apps?
If you don't use them,, uninstall them

That would make sense, however I like to have the weather channel app on occasion and the Google Maps I use frequently. It just starts running even if I have not used it in a while.
I use taskpanel and it does a pretty a good job.

android does a good job at handling tasks auto, I don't use a task killer par say, but I do have astro, and will occasionally kill certain apps when I know I won't be using them, say market if I know I wont be using it for hours.
The reason they keep starting back up is because either an app you are running uses them, or an event has changed on your phone.
Events include:
Booting.
Market installs
Location changes
Uninstalls
Enabling BT/wifi
Phone calls
data syncing
You would do well to purchase autostarts from the market to see how to control this, and learn more about the OS in the process.
I had a similar issue, if you can uninstall the app and reinstall from the market. This should solve the autostart problem

Remove apps from start up?

My Phone is randomly starting up with all types of apps.. how can this be prevented? Is there a startup folder like on winmo?

This is what android does. The operating system is built to multitask, just like your pc's OS. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll likely cause issues when not allowing apps to run at startup. Get rid of the crappy task manager that you're likely running and let android do its job.
If you want to tweak androids memory usage settings, get autokiller. Read first though. Don't just set it to strict or aggressive and not expect to run into problems.

While this may be true, there are a lot of unnecesary apps running at start up and constantly popping up... as advanhit says, one should know what they're doing before messing with it, otherwise u can completly crap some apps that u like to use or have running. But provided you have an understanding of what apps u need and which ones u don't, u can always root, and use an app like titanium uninstaller or root explorer/manager to remove some apps, such as some of sprints bloatware etc... you just have to know where to look to find them... some simple esearch here or on othr forums like sdx, will help you figure it out.

Download startup manager from the market to stop unwanted apps from starting or restarting automatically.
I should've clarified.. I dont mean system related apps.. I mean, one reboot my Fring or google voice among others, will be in the running apps list.. next reboot, sprint nav, ebay, bank of america will be running..
I'm already rooted, and ive removed the bloat that i wanted to remove.. I monitor my memory usage with Advanced taskkiller.
Thanks for the suggestions and advice guys!

Again... Get rid of the task killer.
As far as google voice, stop that from running and it will effect google sync. Which syncs contacts, calendar events, etc. If youre running Froyo, even apps and settings will be effected by this.. This is what I meant by knowing what you're doing before tooling with these operations. As stated before... This is how android works. Leaving it alone will be the best thing for you. If you're lagging, I recommend a different ROM.
FYI. Not to sound cocky, I'm speaking from experience.. Five generations of android devices used... All rooted and running flawlessly. G1, MT3G, Cliq, Moto Droid, Droid Eris.

How to stop background services?

I am new to Android, still got my iphone 3GS as a backup. One reason for switching was to be able to watch flash video, the problem I have is because apps and services never seem to close, no matter what I try, video too slow to play with everything else running.
Is it possible to stop services on the Galaxy Note so they don't restart automatically, unless I want them to? I have tried several killer apps, but does not really do it. Why is not possible to only run one app and service at a time or why I want?
Help!!!

There are some apps and services which restart upon closing manually. The only way to have them remain closed is by freezing them or uninstalling them. You have to first root your phone and then install Titanium Backup. In there you will have to either uninstall the apps/services or freeze them. It also works on stock apps which came pre-installed on the phone. Just be careful not to uninstall any apps which are part of the O/S.
you need to root your phone, and rum a root level app manager.
This method worked on my Galaxy Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830969
once you rooted, install titanium backup. To back up all you apps. If you are willing to pay, this app will let you freeze apps not to run in the background as well.
Or install gemini apps manager, it allows you to change the autostart, block, and uninstall any apps you want.
Just becareful not to block or uninstall importNt system apps. They are addictive because you feel powerful and in control.
