Automatic Updates? - XPERIA X10 General

Perhaps a silly question but do you need a SE sync account for automatic updates to be received in the notification bar? My phone has never shown these messages and i have updated periodly through SEUS.
Another thing is it true rooted phones won't receive automatic updates?
Any light shed on this subject would be ace, thanks I only ask cos I don't won't to miss the glorious day when 2.1 is released.

Anyone got any ideas on this?

I didn't create a SE-login and I got a few updates in the past. Up to r2ba026.
As far as for the rooting, if you root using the x10 root .apk, I 'm sure everything will work fine
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Thanks for your responce. I wasn't sure that's because I thought you may need the data sync to any FW updates can be sent.
I'm using the universal androot for rooting and finding that pretty good. It allows me to unroot if needs be, does the x10 root .apk you mentioned do this?
Does it make a differnce to any features or usabilty depending on different methods of rooting?
Sorry for so many questions, I am curious about all this

I used the .apk android rood method only to remove moxier and quadrapop, afterwards I unrooted... so I don't know
Of caurse the upgrade will again remove root, but let's hope the apk still works in 2.1

What is SE-Sync?
When updates are available OTA for unrooted phones, the carrier will send out a message as far as I know. I've been notified as soon as the update was available.
Then again, my carrier sent out letters in the mail to make sure people updated their firmware a few weeks ago. (got an update that doubled internet download speed with a new APN, and support for Japanese carrier mail)

If apk rooting doesn't work in 2.1 I suppose it will eventually work one day... Untill then I'll leave the unused apps alone.
Se-sync is the contact/agenda/favorites sync's app provided by SonyEricsson... I don't use it, I prefer google sync.

On the phone, Download z4root from google and install it, then open it and choose Perm Root, then it will install su and the Superuser app.
Hope it helps.
I tried the z4 infact thats was the way I rooted my phone the first time but after the ota update they shut down Z4root's path. I need my root back to tether (no internet at all now!)

use gingerbreak to root and the launcher probably wont work, havnt seen anyone mention it anyway
No you cant sideload apps out of the box. You first need to root with gingerbreak method and then use the gladenable script to enable sideloading.

I was thinking of using the side loading wonder machine. And to root, dont I have to rsd sbf 1.8.3 first? Anyways, thanks for the answers

Congrats! Ateix is a great device. Easiest way to install Nonmarket apps is to go to Android store n purchase "Non Market apps Enabler" created by fellow member here. Only costs 1 dollar somethn. Enables the checkbox n options to enable non market app installs. Works instantly. No side loading n all that needed. Saves a ton of Time n hassle. I got it n was installing non market apps instantly with it!
If its a UK spec one, you can side load without doing anything... Otherwise rooting will be required

Do I need to unlock my bootloader to use autoroot?
How I wish this update would be done via OTA..
main reason for me is I don't want to lose root and to I don't want to flash also because restoring 14gb+ of data will be a lot of work for me.. I'm thinking not to use titanium backup instead I will just copy all my sd card files to my PC as a backup file.. But I fear that if i return all my files back to sd card after update some apps/games might not work properly.
autoroot would be a great idea though, but I don't trust the guy who said it.. I think felix is just boosting his post count by lurking around this forum, giving incomplete details, always saying "there is already thread about that", and other non sense post just to boost his post count.. No pun intended felix..
I think many/most people with a locked bootloader are waiting for the ota (myself included). The ota for the arc xloud update came a while after it arrived on Pc Companion/SEUS so i guess it just a waiting game now for when it arrives.

Im not sure myself since i also have the play but i think it was a few weeks. I just noticed a similar discussion on the arc forum (about if they will loose root) and a few weeks later people were getting the update over ota. But like the last update not every country has had the ota update yet only some.
OTA update 4.0.A.2.368 available + remain rooted (arc)
got the update via OTA today! (Philippines)
and i managed to preserve root!
Yey!
I got the ota update last night. UK generic version

Thats how i did it anyway, you dont need unlocked B00TLoader to use FlashTooL so maybe try that?It may not work though and pretty risky too
I read somewhere you don't need unlocked bootloader to use flashtool but if you try to flash custom kernel via flashtool you need an unlocked bootloader....
I tried ota (uk generic) today but after download I get 'could not install software' error.

Kindle questions

Is rooting really needed for the kf? I am not super computer suave, but I did root my X10a. What I really want to know is will I need to root to be happy with the kf?

If you want the android market you will want to root it. But with burrito root it's pretty easy.
Thanks
I was looking at some of the videos and I just get nervous about bricking it. I will give it a shot when I pick one up.
It's not "needed" but it totally turns into a full Android tablet, once you put CyanogenMod on it that is. It's great.
No need to be nervous. Just follow the guides that are in the Development section and with some patience, everything will go smooth.
I will try it out when I get it.
Who will unbrick it when things go wrong lol

I've heard just about ANY OTA updates kills root access. So if I were you I would totally not take anything from Amazon after rooting and putting CM on it.
Edit: if you don't put CM on it and stick to stock Fire, then to answer your question, yes it will probably kill root access. All depends on what the OTA consists of.
I am really just wanting the Google Android Market. Will the OTA updates kill the market along with root access? I couldn't find where it said that it killed the market also.

I am not so sure on that one, I'm sorry. I would think Stock Fire software wouldn't play nice with Android Market installed as well, I could be wrong, not sure.
