My friend has a phone but its not turned on i have a rooted hero running cm6 i got the wireless tether app can he get on if i turn on the wireless tether app from my hero

You will be able to get a wifi connection on the phone - you wont be able to call or text - so basically its like an ipod touch -
and he can only connect to your hero if he's using one of the last few nightlies when they turned on the ability to connect to ad-hoc. Normally, an android device cannot connect to an ad hoc network.

Have you heard of punctuation? I'd love to help but I have no idea what you're asking.
EDIT: It appears you're asking if another person can connect to your Hero using their phone. That's only possible if their phone supports connecting to Ad Hoc wireless points.

Along those lines, does a kernel exist that supports WiFi tether in AP mode on the Hero200?
no drivers to allow that. If your friend is running froyo or eclair (doesn't work on all phones), he can use the wpa_supplicant from this thread. Then he can connect to ad-hoc
I am not home i will try it thanks

Anyone using barnacle wifi on mytouch and able to actually tether? I know about wifi tether built into the phone or the wireless tether app. Those work fine, I want to use barnacle because of its open NAT. So no critics please. I just need someone that got it to work because my device can see it, but barnacle won't show me its connected or that its a client

I have it installed and configured, but can't get anything to connect to it. The SSID broadcasts, but it shows up as an available "device" vs. a wifi network. I try to connect by with and without WEP (Barnacle says it failed to parse WEP if security enabled), and it appears to connect, but Barnacle shows no client connections and no access from the other device.
Just using the android wifi tether app instead...

Hope it's not a (too) stupid question - with a rooted device, can I use the Wi-Fi Tether bundled app w/o the tethering option in my plan (read: for free)?
Thanks
Hi there
I use Wifi tether for root users, looks and works better than Barnacle
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Which version have are you using?
None of them specify MT4G.
I have a rooted Mytouch 4g running 2.2 and was able to get "Android-wifi-tether" working using the version for the Samsung Fascinate 2.x. Its the last option at the link h4xdaplanet provided.
I cant provide a direct link since I have a new account, sorry.
Thanks
I actually got this one to work a while ago but forgot to update

I am using to built in hot spot with no issues at all, before and after root. Not a stupid question. As long as you have the data plan, afaik, there is no current extra cost for using wired or wireless tethering. Hope this helps.
I recently added wifi tethering to my rooted Epic, and all works fine when connecting using a pc, or ipod, but for some odd reason I cannot get another Android phone, (have tried an Evo, and LG) to connect, or even find my tethering network. Any ideas? Thanks.

It's just the nature of the beast from what I'm told. Both my friend and I (he has a fascinate) are using the newest wifi tether (pre14 I believe) and neither of us can see the others network.
Its possible..replace the wpa_suplicant in the /system/bin with the one I'm gonna attach (remove the .rar extension)..make sure to keep a backup of the original...you will need to remount for read/write using Root Explorer or Terminal.
Now you will be able to see Ad-Hoc wifi networks...Ive only tested this on DK17 but it probably will work on the others as well.
Some networks if you see it get stuck ad "Obtaining an IP", then you gotta setup a static IP on both clients.
I recently rooted my EVO 4G and downloaded the wifi tethering app. So, a couple questions. 1. Is this an ad hoc network? 2. I dont think ps3 supports ad hoc networks, so is there a way to connect my laptop to my phone and have the laptop act as the AP (non ad hoc).
Nevermind, figured it out. I guess the android wireless tether app is not ad hoc. As my ps3 was able to connect. Worked extremely good by the way.
How did you do it? I need to test it with my G2 but with my slide the ps3 didn't even see the signal from my phone - or if it did, it didn't up on the connection list after scanning.
Use calk sprint hotspot hack works flawlessly

And how would you change the NAT settings to open using WiFi tether? Call of Duty black ops is on strict when using wifi tether, no lag or anything just hard to connected to friends???

Hey all, just updated to cm7 (jt, you are my hero). I was wondering what I need to download for tethering. I tried using the old wifi_tether app I had from froyo and what not but it does not seem to be working. Any ideas?

Barnacle works if all you need is ad hoc (tethering a windows machine), but I haven't found anything that will do access point.
You don't need to download anything... it's built in. Go to: Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Tethering and portable hotspot

Yes, it's there, but doesn't work on my phone. Have you successfully tethered with it?
I use barnacle as well and it works great on my laptop running windows 7 and I have never had any issues with wireless devices and ad-hoc I let friends from work pull from my wifi all the time, maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones

I can verify that my computer at least recognizes the portable hotspot but I did not try to connect to it. Will try tomorrow and will report back.

The issue arises if you're trying to tether an android tablet. They won't use ad hoc out of the box.

Android WIFI Tether should works great for me. I am able to do the wpasuplicant authentication again as well. This app is no longer in the android market so you will have to download direct from the source. There is an updated beta version which does work in CM7 7/17 release.

No offense, but I feel Barnacle is crap. It is one of the only WIFI tether apps that is unable to do WPA authentication. WEP can be cracked in under 5 minutes with open source tools which leaves you vulnerable to man in the middle attacks. The CM7 hotspot even does WPA.
Just got an HTC Rezound and was just wondering if I could tether my Kindle Fire with my phone and use it's 4G connection when I'm not at home or near WIFI? I apologize if this has been covered but I couldn't find any updated threads on this.
If I'm able to can someone please tell me a working tether application that I can use and how to use it properly. I haven't tethered since my OG.
Thanks everyone.
if your phone is able to operate as hotspot then you need nothing at the kf
i'm using zt-180 adhoc switcher from the market to tether with pc (connectify)
this has also been reported to work with phones which only support adhoc mode

Yes, my Rezound has a hotspot app if that is what you mean, its the official Verizon mobile hotspot app? It came preinstalled on the phone. Verizon charges to use the app though.
I was just curious if I could install an app on my phone and kindle fire so my kindle fire could use the 4G from my phone to access the internet, etc.? So if I'm in a car I can just turn my phone on and my KF will have internet. How do I do that with the app your talking about?
If you want to use Mobil hotspots from Verizon that will work but it will cost you monthly to use. If you don't want to spend any lotr than you have to, you will need to root your phone and install Wireless Tether from Google marketplace and you should be fine.
