[Q] EVO tethering via USB - Updates 9/2010 - EVO 4G General

OK, so I don't want to use EasyTether or PDANet. I also don't want to pay Sprint a penny more than what I am already paying them. So, I start hacking, debuggin, looking, searching for ways to get the usb tethering working. Here is what I found.
If I turn off Wifi on my laptop, connect PC to EVO via USB and enable WiFi on the EVO, then connect to my WirelessN LinkSys Router.
AND when I connect I choose the USB Tethering option.
It works, what.....yeah, it works.
13.47MB down/3.78MB up, life it good.
I am rooted, used the downgrade to 2.1, root with unrevoke, upgrade to 2.2 procedure defined here at XDA.
Now the caveat, if I use 3G and not WiFi, I get the notorous Error Code: 67
Now, somewhere in this haystack at XDA I saw a thread talking about cheat codes, but for the life of me, I can't find it now.
What I am thinking is SPRINT disabled the modem, I need the code to enable the modem. OR, Sprint did something to disable the feature, need the code to enable the feature.
Anybody ???

um... if you're rooted just install Cyanogen rom and use the built in USB tethering without having all that funky bs. Works with WIFI + 3G.

Are you sure you are connected to the phone itself and not to the original wireless network? Your upload speeds seems out of place... even on 4G it should be close to 1 Mbps, download speed also seems suspicious... a few members have hit 10 Mbps but 13 sounds way off.

i agree.
the phone is picking up the data connection from the router, and passing it along to your laptop. therefore the laptop is just getting its net from the router as well. you are not "tethering" off of your mobile data.

I have the same problem.. I called Sprint and they said I had to pay 30$ to use the usb modem.
By the way, I tested my speed in NYC and it reached 10Mbps on download and 1Mbps in upload. There are some places in NYC where you can get 4G signal.

lol... your just using wifi from your router

Ok, so I use easytether and wireless tether sometimes , but my download speed on my laptop compared to my phone are terrible. Is this a normal occurrence, or am I missing something.

Free Mobile Broadband [For your Laptop]

Ever wanted to have a fast internet connection that will let you surf the web, play online games (Like World Of Warcraft), without being limited by a Ethernet cable, or wifi range? Well, read on...
What you'll need:
- Sprint With Power Vision Access (15.00 a month)
- A Windows Mobile phone
- A laptop
- A mini-usb to usb connector
First, boot your phone up, and disconnect all usb cables from the phone. Connect to the internet Via IE, so a live webpage is opened. Click Start > Programs > Internet Sharing. Remember that the USB cable is not connected to the phone at this time. Once in internet sharing, make sure to choose "Sprint PCS" from the Network Connection option. Click "Connect". Your status should read "Connected" or "Check USB connection". At this point, you can connect the USB, and windows will automatically load the drivers, and connect. Once your phone reads "Connected", you can open up your favorite browser, or anything else that may require an internet connection, and go at it. You've just skipped out on the $39 monthly tethering charge.
I've actually done this with my Mogul, and got speeds between 1100-1300kb/s down and about 300kb/s up.
Good Luck!
You know they can tell if you tether still... so if you use a lot of data they could catch you

This is a feature built in WM, however, don't get it confused. If you're running the standard Sprint ROM, they can detect you tethering, so don't be surprised one day to get a large bill.
But, agreed this is a easy way to connect, but you may want to look at some custom roms, or research other options if you need to use this.
Oh, btw those speeds must be a typo. I'm using Sprint and currently connected using Internet Sharing and while I might occasionally get 1MB download speeds, I average around 400Kbps - 800 Kbps in Hampton Roads, VA area
Where are you located?
Dude, this is a feature of the phone. Like, it's in the manual. We know.

I wish we have Sprint.
There are some unlimited broadband offer but all sucks (even we can't get real 3G / HSDPA speed right here)
i'm waiting for my touch and just joined sprint... how many months have you been tethering?
I've been tethering for about a year and a half now.
I live in the seattle area, and i've gotten 2.4mb/s once.
wait is this thread dated 2006 and for some reason just showing as new???????
HAVE u TrieD
in 2006 when Vodafone was lanuched in S.A they had a free Unlimited Internet However it only worked through proxy and was only limited to the phone when tryin to tether it brought a blank page. So When you change UA 0n IE or FireFox to Like Nokia6680/2.0 It w0rkeD so change maybe changing UA of the browser SPrinT May n0t b able to detect if ur tethering you could also try www.your-freedom.net it worked when vodafone live was ristricted to Phone Browser UA
Not restricted anymore, by the way.
...I hit 3mb/s today.

SGS - internet connecting pc problems

Hi,
I live in Australia. I bought a SGS from UK. It has nothing changed in firmware its the same as it comes from the box. (just a few games and apps installed from the android market).
My problem is when I connect the SGS to my laptop through the USB cable and I chose "PC INTERNET" I get a connection but i get a lot of drop outs, I would say being honestly every 5 minutes my connection drops. I live right in the city and my phone has good reception so its not the reception.
I haven't tried teethering (i dont wanna teether coz mobile plans says, NO teethering).
What can I do to fix the drop out connection problem.
if you are using your internet via the LAPTOP over the USB cable, then you need to figure out WHY your LAPTOP is not connecting properly to the Internet.
it takes about 1 min to connect and when it connects i choose HOME connetion. than it works good for 5 mins and it drops out and reconnects itself.
Correct me if I've read your post incorrectly but isn't what you're doing tethering?
From Wikipedia: "Tethering is the use of a mobile device such as a mobile phone to supply Internet access for another device which is otherwise unconnected, using the mobile device as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology, Portable Wi-Fi hotspots, or cables (such as USB)."
well yes and no...
it is teethering but carriers cant prove that.
however
if i do select teether on my phone it says something like this option will use black hole date or something (from my understanding is that it will use different data to my free date) so i choose to try the cable connect than select interent connection.
anyways the problem is still there... has anyone got any solutions or give me some ideas?
thanks
are you trying to use your phone as a modem or not?
if you are, then we can help you there are many ways to do it.
but if you are doing the opposite, using your laptop internet, for your phone to access internet (which doesn't make any sense at all) then we can't help you as it's a laptop problem.
im trying to use my phone as a modem but in a way without carriers finding out im actually using my phone to teether.
my problem is that my connection keeps droping every 5 minutes for 10-30sec.
I use my Galaxy as a modem and I had nothing but hassle when connecting using the cable. I found out its far better to go into settings then wireless settings then switch mobile AP on. Your phone sends the connection over wifi to the pc and gives me no hassle at all.
I reckon the only way your service provider would know is by looking at how much data you use so just be careful and you should be fine. Or find out what your monthly limit is and put a data counter on the phone, I use Netcounter, its free and simple but gives the info you need like daily, weekly and monthly usage
yup, the wireless method is by far the easiest one, and best of all it is build in!
as for your cell phone provider finding out, regardless of what you do, they don't care, they only check how much data you used up, and charge you that amount
well im on 1gb per month. Plenty of data there.
I tried another method today: turn bluetooth on and connect through bluetooth and that seem to works perfectly. I was online for 3 hours without dropping once.
Now I`m wondering why was it dropping with the cable connected? And not even once through bluetooth!
I understand your Problem, but at time i reading your last Post i have an question.
I understand your Posts that you dont use Wireless thether becouse your Carrier dont Allow Laptops to Acces Wireless conections right?
But it makes no difference if you use the cable or a wireless conection to thether your Internet. If you surf under the radar you dont getting into troubles. And there is no blackhole Data when you tether wireless. Its a gprs, edeg, 3g or umts Connection and your Phone manage this automaticly. So now comes my question. Why you dont use the build in wireless tether function which is the fastest and easiest way to connect. You dont need the phone directly near the laptop, you can give it to the point of best data connection, okay and a powerstrip for the akku. But its much faster then the Bluetooth connection, becouse of wlan.

"And there is no blackhole Data when you teether wireless"
From now on I will use the AP to connect. I thought the carriers (OPTUS) might find out. But since they can't find out than this is the best option. Thanks for confirming they cant find out weather I connected my laptop or just used the date from my phone.
This remind my at the old days where you share your internet connection thru a soho rooter or just another pc with 2 network cards built in. In these early days the Provider says its forbidden to use the connection for more pcs than one. But in fact they never could meassure this and no one ever gets an letter from them or an contract decline/service interuption. The truth is, that there was a kind of law process against them and now the isp's is forbidden to limit the usage of your internet connection to only one device. So that means not that you get unlimited numbers of ip adresses, but you can NAT as much devices you want. Now you get from every ISP a Preconfigured router if you like.
And the same will hapen over a pariod of time to the wireless providers as well. Its your connection so you can use them the way u like it. Its already happend here, you can buy umts router for your home.
Where i live there is no question like this. Just do it. But maybe its becouse of our mentalogiy. If somone says no the typical austrian will do it anyway and gives no dime to what others say. If no one forbid you something then its allready allowed to do. ;-)
Greetings to Australia (the country with the kangaroos) like we here in Austria say. lol

Thanks for that info. That takes my concerns/stress away. Just didn't wanna receive a thousand dollar bill that's all I cared

Tethered USB Mode

I'm wondering if I use the tethered USB mode that pops will incur a charge from sprint if I use it.
I am wondering this, too. If needed, what app is anyone else using?
USB Tethered doesn't cost you anything unless you go over 5MB on 3G. 4G is unlimited.
The application is built-in. Plug in your phone to your computer via USB and you'll be presented with three options, Charging Mode, Mass Storage Mode and Tethered Mode. Choose Tethered Mode.
Are you sure about the 5GB limit on 3G? I was pretty certain the $10/mnth fee guaranteed no data cap at all even on 3G.
Also, the tethered mode didn't work at all out of the box on my old Evo. That will be interesting if it works straight up on the Epic.

According to Sprint, the $10 fee guarantees no data cap ONLY on 4G. 3G data cap still applies.
3g data DOES NOT have a cap on the EVO or EPIC. I got into a long heated argument about this with Sprint reps, fine print, and other people. I was on the side that there was a 5gb limit. Let's just say I lost the argument and was shown and told enough proof that there was indeed no set limit on 3g.

If you say so. They went the opposite direction to show me the fine print and confirm with their manager that the 3G is still capped at 5GB and the 4G is unlimited.
I don't care either way; just relaying information I was given by the San Diego, La Jolla store.
Just to clear something up. Selectign "tether mode" does add it as a modem on the computer. I tried the old DUN settings and was nto able to get it to connect.

I'm getting "network cable unplugged" when I try to tether from the epic to my 64bit windows 7 laptop.
Any idea whats up? I have the drivers installed. (and windows shows no errors).
Thanks
Can anyone reply with steps on how they got the phone to tether (w/o the $30 / month hotspot add-on)?
Even if it's with PDANet? I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and I can't even get the drivers to install.
Where would I get the drivers from anyway? Maybe I should check the box @ home to see if there's a CD included (is there a CD included??)

Samsung just posted Vista/Wndows 7 drivers, dated yesterday. You can download here.
Please let us know if that solves the problem for you.
^Awesome, much appreciated. I'll give that a spin.
I am able to successfully USB tether (and wifi tether, I decided to pay for the plan for at least this weekend, was going to be traveling, and need it).
However, I can't seem to get tethered 4g to work. Every time I switch to it, the Epic disconnects from 4g, then the computer tries to get an IP, and is never successful, despite that just before that, the phone was on 4g, and had an IP.
And sprint's mobile hotspot software appears to disconnect the 4g connection as well, when I activate it, very odd.
Tether to USB on Non-Rooted EPIC confirmed
I downloaded this app:
Market Link: market://search?q=pname:com.mstream.easytether_beta
Then I installed this onto my PC:
Win 7 -- 32bit here (I only tested 32bit)
http://www.mobile-stream.com/beta/easytether_x86.msi
Win 7 -- 64bit here
http://www.mobile-stream.com/beta/easytether_x64.msi
Then I downloaded this and installed Samsung Drivers to my PC after Easy Tether
http://www.mobile-stream.com/beta/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
Confirmed working since I made this post from my Netbook connected via my EPIC and no I do not have Sprints tether plan.
Somehow, I'm unable to get this to work, even with Hero's steps with Mobilestream.
My computer isn't matching the Epic as a Samsung device with the drivers, for some reason.
I'm seeing the following sequence in my Windows Event Log:
"

mscott,
Would you mind providing detailed instructions on how you got USB tethering successfully working?
*Finally* just got USB tethering to work, with either PDANet or Mobilestream's Easy Tether on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit!
I seem to be the only one remaining in the world who's having these issues, but in case this helps any other poor souls:
1. Google "sdx epic development confirmed working drivers" to download the confirmed 64-bit drivers. (These were confirmed earlier by joeykrim, and confirmed by me as well, (like I matter)). There were many other threads elsewhere pointing to the same drivers, but the first Googled result is quite definitive.
2. Same thread, few posts down written by "chaosfenix", basically explains how toggling USB debugging mode on and off initiates the recognition and installation of a whole slew of drivers (e.g. Samsung Android Modem, ADB interface, USB Mass storage device, etc.). In my case, I simply installed the 64-bit drivers once, and yet unplugged the USB cable, and toggled the USB debugging mode multiple times, in order to have multiple drivers install successfully.
And voila! That's about it. This really tested my ol' Helpdesk chops a lot. Hope the next guy doesn't need to go through as much pain as I did...

[Q] Who is rooted and tethering with a mac via USB?

Title says it all folks. Who here is using an Epic, rooted and tethering just fine via USB? Only one catch....without using PDAnet or other third party apps. Just the phone.
Thanks in advance.

Because these phones heat up quite a bit when running a 4g radio, plugged into a charger, and the wifi radio. I want to tether via usb so that I'm getting power while I tether AND don't have to turn on the wifi radio.
Cut down on heat, increase the life of your battery and phone.
Besides that, it's a feature of the phone that I paid for and I want to be able to use it. Lol.

Cool. Thanks for the tutorial here.
I've been trying to be nice about my data and pay for tethering through Sprint without rooting and doing wifi tether/usb but I'm finding that this Epic doesn't play nice with Mac and USB and there's a glitch which doesn't allow me to do 4g hotspot AND voice at the same time. Every time I get a voice call, the hotspot drops the 4g connection as if I was using 3g. ONce the call ends, the phone reconnects to 4g and continues on. I've brought both of these up to Sprint with no resolution as of yet.
is there any advantage using usb vs wifi? besides what you mentioned, but speed wise. is one faster than the other? or are they pretty much the same. i tether alot with wifi and i usually have my phone plugged into the wall charger whenever i do and notice it can get kinda hot sometimes. if there is no speed diff id prob go wired also

I'm running SRF 1.2 w/Genocide 1.1. Earlier tonight, using qbking's excellent video, I used the Spring Hotspot hack. Everything worked perfectly and I can now wirelessly tether my Epic to my PowerBook G4. However, trying to do a wired tether is another story. Although my network preferences lists the Samsung SPH-D700, clicking "connect" doesn't seem to work. What happens is that it'll saying "connecting" for a few seconds, and then I'll get a pop-up reading: "Internet Connect A Modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." Is there a proper way to configure the network preferences for this modem so that I can wire tether my Mac laptop to my Epic?

Using Evo 4G with Zoom 4501 Router can you?

Hello all,
Here is my deal and hopefully someone can help.. I have an Evo 4g.. currently I do not have internet in my home (cable started getting to pricey in my area) and have rooted my phone and have been using the wifi tether app. However, I want to also share connection with other devices throughout my home, ie, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 xbox360 so I purchased this Zoom 4501 wireless N router that works with 3G/4G, wifi, cable etc..
Now, I was able to connect my phone to the usb port on the router, go through the setup wizard and and was able to actually get the router up and running however, the only way to do it is by turning on the usb tether option in the settings menu.. it only works on 3G and not 4G.. when I turn on the 4G option, it says that I do have an account with sprint.. is there any other way around this? If anyone can help, let me know thanks!

C'mon man.. I'm looking for a legit solution... besides... theirs is encrypted....
Just get a wireless extender and connect all the devices to that.
EVO)))))))))Wireless extender ))))))))all your devices(no device limit) + ethernet.
http://3gstore.com/product/1813_pepwave-surf-mini-200.html I use it with my sprint mifi because I connect more than 9 devices when I'm at work. (grandfathered unlimited plan ) and the mifi only allows for 5
Hey thanks.. just got it to work, just purchased this... http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354515
seems to work pretty well... thanks for the info guys...
Just make sure only the router is connected to the evo with encryption, everything else will be handled by the repeater
Buy a router that you can put tomatousb firmware on it. Then configure the wireless as wireless bridge or client to the evo's wireless tether. Works great for me when the times my internet is down.
