Dear Friends!
I spent last two weeks trying different app's to get best solution for Movie experience on our beloved Rhodium/Tilt2/Touch pro2 device.
The main idea was to get divx movie to play smoothly and to get best quality as possible.
As we know H.264 codec (mp4) is hardware supported and it gives best results.
So considering that, I got best video experience with inbuilt HTC player that supports hardware acceleration for video.
It does not have a lot of options, and scrolling forward and backward is a little cumber stone, but it provides the best picture so I think (IMHO) is still the best choice.
When Choosing right software my main goal was to have as few steps as possible.
I found that the easiest way to do the conversion is with ImTOO Video Converter Ultimate 6. (http://www.imtoo.com/video-converter.html)
I tried a lot of different software, Trial and Freeware, and ImToo proved to be the best from lot of different perspectives. So it's my number one choice for this task (and also some other video encoding stuff.)
STEP1. Subtitles (Skip to STEP2 if You don't need them)
In case English is not your native language, you would probably (like me) want to have some subtitles with your movie:
You will need to convert *.srt and *.sub subtitles to *.ssa type, so You could get 'Outline and Drop Shadow' effect.
'Subtitle Workshop' (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Subtitle_Workshop) seems perfect for that. (It has all needed settings and also Batch conversion option)
Press Shift+Alt+L to get to Settings/Output menu, where You can set the subtitle settings like Font, Color, etc.
Choose SubStation Alpha (*.ssa)
Border style: 'Outline + drop shadow'
Font:Arial, Bold, 22, (works best for me), encoding...
Load Subtitle and save it as SubStation Alpha format or use Batch Converting option under Tools/Batch Convert options (Ctrl+M) (if You have more than one subtitle to convert):
-set the source folder for subtitles, output folder, FPS and SubStation Alpha format.
STEP2. Encoding to H.264 format with Imtoo
a.Load your video file
b.Load the profile in general video format/ 'H.264/MPEG4 AVC video'
and set conversion settings to
Video: (Manually enter!) Video Size 800x480,
Note: If You enter for example 576x432 instead 800x480, there will be no sound on your HTC, only video. Don't ask me why, it's the same thing that happens to lots of people with many different encoders and it has something to do with AAC settings detailed, which will also change, when you change video settings....but I am not enough in to hardcore encoding, to understand what is the reason, I only know that this problem appears to be very common when converting for Rhodium with different software....
Bitrate 256K, Frame rate 25FPS(should be same as sub file FPS!)
Audio:Mpeg-4 AAC, 44100, 128K
Now You should set/add Subtitles:
Go to: Edit/effect/Subtitles. (Note: only Ultimate version of Imtoo!)
Add Sub if not already there, and set font to Arial, Style to Bold and Size to 22 (or smaller if You prefer)
Convert the movie and transfer it to Your Touch pro2
That's it!
Enjoy playing Your file on HTC.
Final Output size of the file is not the same as stated Output Size, nor it is the Bitrate. Imtoo bug I guess...But File plays smoothly enough at least for my taste.

What i do is open you tube in chrome and i already have chrome extension installed on chrome.http://www.chromeextensions.org/music-videos-photos/chrome-youtube-downloader/. So when i play video i get options to save video in all the available formats and the Mp4 video i get is usually 20mb or 25 mb (sometimes less than that) in best quality.
Other thing you can do is go to this site http://keep-tube.com/ and downlaod video in MP4 format in great quality.
I think the best option is chrome extension because you get best quality video/audio with less size
Give it a try.
I don't know why you do this, just download core player
I watch LOST season 6 on my phone just download jackos s2 rom and disable manila for better performance
I use Pocket Divx Encoder to make xvid files of my favorite videos and then play them with CorePlayer using the QTV setting for best quality.
I use DivX Player. It was made for QVGA but works just fine on TP2, just the menus & fonts are small. It'll play DivX encoded AVI's that must DVDRips are.

Normally works without converted it, in ac format 1,5Gb of movie it will be played smoothly, if not try google to find some converter bc right now i can´t remember any.

I went through the various options for this a few months ago. In TCPMP, set the following for best performance:
In Video:
Smooth video (only 50%)
Quality: Normal
Video driver: Intel XScale
In Settings - DirectDraw
Overlay with colorkey
In Settings - Intel XScale
Everything selected
Leave all other video settings off or at the default settings.
Unfortunately, the universal can't manage any video (XviD, MP4 or WMV) I've tried at the native resolution of 640x480 without some serious frame skipping. But it seems to cope well with videos I've encoded for my Archos, which are XviD or DivX, 320x240, and are encoded at 1000 kbps or less. You can use B-Frames (they don't take much processing power and give a significant performance increase), but don't use GMC or Q-Pel.
As for converters/encoders, take your pick. There are loads. Dr DivX is pretty simple to use, but IIRC isn't available any more. Your best bet is to follow one of the guides at doom9.org.

Why not try Windows Media Encoder if you are just converting from one format to another (don't know if you can rip DVD, never tried). The built in profiles are good enough for the Uni's screen. To rip from DVD I use IMTOO dvd ripper. Just create a profile as listed above and away you go.....Good luck,Pug

Is it better than DrDivx? I have had some good success with DrDivx. The problem is that it wastes some space for the widescreen formats and I would prefer to use every single pixel available. Is there a setting in DrDivx that reformats the movie to fit exactly in the Tornado screen?
I use
Fox Video Converter. Virtually any format with any setting and you can adjust any of the settings to suit yourself. Generally a 700Mb Divx converts into a roughtly 250-300Mb WMV or ASF or whatever you want. Then TCPMP.

i've always found best results with avi format. TCPMP is available for free for the tytn but does have a playback issue which is very simply worked around.
As for software for converting your videos, I use CarryDVD (not free) for converting my dvd's - I found converting a DVD movie to a 250-300MB avi gives excellent results. For converting non-dvd video files, eg. larger avi files, I use the free version of Lathe - PocketDivX Encoder with Xvid and 2 pass encoding checked.

Ive used AutoGK, it encodes from several sources (including VOB files from DVDs) into Xvid or DivX.
I personally encode into .avi using Xvid (it does a 2pass Mpeg-4 Xvid encoding to .avi) and audio is encoded in MP3 at 128kbit VBR. And i set it to encode into 320x240.
Using Coreplayer (or TCPMP) it plays back FLAWLESSLY.
For example ive encoded an episode of the simpsons (22mins) from DVD into a 60Mb avi file and its just perfect playback on the TyTN. The performance TCPMP/Coreplayer seems to depend somewhat on the ROM you are using.
An excellent guide for using AutoGK alongside DVD Decrypter (both freeware) is found HERE on doom9.org. Using my analogy the filesize you set in AutoGK can be found using 5.45*minutes.
Use half that if you are encoding a low detail picture such as a cartoon (as i did with the simpsons). So for example a 30 minute video of a properly filmed source (ie friends, or cheers etc..) would use a filesize of 163.5Mb.

Thanks Guest69, i've downloaded the trial version of CarryDVD, if I like it i'll buy the software.
Not free, but I am using CloneDVDmobile from slysoft. $39, iirc, though I got the suite (ripping and decoding as well) a while back when it was on sale. Yes, there are free versions that do much of the same, but quite honestly I got tired of going multiple places to get updates. Seems to work well for encoding.
Just figured out that you have to choose the Raw Framebuffer option and NOT the ATI Imageon (in the TCPMP Video Options) in order to get normal playback on the hermes. I've got a recode of Madagascar that looks great at 300MB for the 80(?) minute movie at 320x(whatever the 16:9AR works out to). There are some tearing-like transition artifiacts, and minor artifacting if I keep my eyes within about 10" of the screen (which is as close as my old-fart eyes can focus).

I started off using the guide, but like to have as much control as possible so now I don't. Obviously depends on the codecs you install, but I like it.
Possibly not the simplest one-stop method.

Try Super. Completely FREE and converts between nearly every file format imaginable. You do need to play with the settings to get good results though. Try 300-400KBps to start with and increase / decrease based on performance, and remember to use single channel and fairly low quality sound to keep the file as small as possible (unless you have decent earphones (and an adapter ))
Super is good but doesn't not give you a 2-pass encode option. Try something like PocketDivxEncoder which has the 2-pass option for encoding to Xvid. It's also very easy to set up and fast.
I actually use WinMEnc. not as polished or professional as PocketDivXEncoder but will convert from DVD or .avi file and is excellent quality plus the second pass is twice as fast as PocketDivxEncoder. (Both are based around Mencoder). For years I did it manually using VDub Mod and even Auto GK.
Another vote for Super. Excellent program for converting any format into any format.
And completely free.

I've got CloneDVDmobile as well. I've used the full CLoneDVD for years with great success. The default for DVD encoding on CloneDVDmobile is set at a quality level of 23 or about 556 meg for a 2 hour movie. What quality level are you finding works best for the Hermes and DVD encoding to get as small an AVI file as possible without making the video un-watchable?
I try to keep my avi files to around 300mb per movie. This seems to keep a sharp picture even with action scenes.
The main goal is to be able to use the hardware accelleration inside the X1. Or, only media player are able to!
Nor TCPMP or COREPLAYER use hardware.
But it was a pain in my ass to find a way to make a script able to convert a full directory fill with videos, with subtitles, and not to manage what is convert. And Free!
The way of thinking is:
I download a lot of free videos inside a unique directory, i have make this one the repository of my download.
I launch my script every night before sleeping
And I don't want to manage what is converted or not and i don't want to launch a application, i want something full auto...
So i make a full automation script.
I work under vista, so i'm not sure that's working under other windows.

Extract the directory where you want
no need to setup anything
To convert:
1- you put your videos inside the dir VIDEOS
2- you start the "LANCE.BAT" inside main dir
3- you wait some hours
4- you transfer (with a copy! not a move) the .mp4 files inside the PMP dir on your X1
To clean when you have watch a video:
1- remove the files inside VIDEOS
2- on the next convert it will remove it from the PMP dir

yes, i have try better resolution and better quality for no visual difference and much more lag.
With these parameters i'm on the border. sometimes some very high details scene are laggy
I bought core player. What are the best settings for it for the x1? Right now mine is on Outpu: qtv display

you cannot have hard accel with any other application than media player.
So you need to make a special mp4 file to be able to read it with it. It's the goal of my script

buffers default except audio 128
sync audio w .avi in adv setting
vid xvid/divx around 600-650 x 300-350 res
bitrate around 800-1K kbps
audio mp3/aac 2chnl around 120kbps
it's not 100% smooth but enjoyable

driver? does is it mean that you add something to your coreplayer?
no it's provided in coreplayer, in fact it's the default set in core if you're using qtv output in core.
try hard reset and install core again from fresh start; i've got some problems too a while ago and wasn't able to playback any video correctly at all; after hard reset those problems are gone.
Not to bug again about this, but doesn't CorePlayer not support Hardware acceleration on the XPeria? Doesn't Sony's player support it?

Sorry, I have read this thread but I still have to ask for proper confirmation; you only get HW acceleration with Windows Media Player? So not when using the SE Media Experience panel?
I ask because I find the panel much faster when playing video than with Media Player (which takes at least the 1st five seconds of a movie to switch to landscape!!)

i have remove panel, so i cannot help you on this. But for me media player only take less than 1sec to switch in landscape.

are you under xp? or vista?
i just try under a xp at office and it works fine.
I tried watching it with both media player and the player on the SE panel, both of them lag from time to time. It doesnt play smoothly.
i cant seem to dl the files, any other links?

I want to know if there is a "best" way to enjoy the highest quality and smooth playback from veoh, youtube and also southpark.com .
Also, what settings do you recommend when converting movies, or mainly sitcoms dvds to the player. I want the best I can get without going into choppy mode...gotta love Three's Company on the go

I don't know about online website because most of them are usually choppy, but I do know about encoding videos for your Touch Pro2. If you want a free encoder (which I use) for your windows mobile phone it would be Windows Media Encoder (google it) its from Microsoft, it has built in settings for your windows mobile playback and you just have set resolution and how high your quality you would like. Also you could use At0mAng Enhanced D3D Driver to have a smoother movie on Windows Media Player on your Touch Pro 2. Thats pretty much it for putting movies on your Touch Pro 2.
Lots of trans-coders out there, but not nearly so many that can go directly from DVD to a file. Most you would have to rip from DVD first. A great exception is Handbrake (free). If you are going to use either Media Player or HTC album (both of which are accelerated under WM6.5), then you can go straight from DVD to high quality (720xwhatever, 1500kbps video MP4) and it plays flawlessly.
I will try that tonight.
I do have the D3D driver already.
BTW, I tried installing HTC album on my Tilt 2 but all I get is a was unsuccessful error.
Also with the Handbrake quote, you will need to have a unlocked DVD in order to rip your movie. Other that its mostly explained.

I was not able to test much so I decided to give my favorite converter a shot (total video converter).
Used the pocket pc or similar profile and made the video (avi file) from 700MB to 400 by reducing quality but it was very choppy.
Then decided to give the original AVI a shot and it runs super smooth with core player (WMP cannot read it). The quality is awesome but way too big.
I tried the Windows Media Encoder 9 but I did not see a specific version that gives me the 400x800 resolution my device has.

Shaolin, you are looking in the incorrect place, at first it doesn't let you choose your screen resolution because you must select the type of file that fits into a type of device that is going to play that file that you are trying to play in WMP on your phone.
Here are the steps to get the video size you want, which I hope you will try, you must go to the New Session Wizard, then click on Convert a File (If you are trying to convert a video file into WMV).
Then find your source file which is your Video you want to watch on your TP2, after that choose your output (Where you want to put that file after it encoded into WMV)
After click Pocket PC (Note that you won't change resolution here)
After all that, choose specifically Pocket PC widescreen video (CBR), then choose the quality of your Bitrate, Audio, and if you want you can add all the Description to your video file if you'd like. (Note that you won't change resolution here either)
Click next, and DON'T check mark Begin converting when I click finish.
Then click finish, after that click Properties on your Windows Media Encoder 9 (it should be on top with a Check mark inside a paper symbol) and click the Video Size Tab. There at the bottom of the wizard you should find Width and Height, set the Resolution to 800 x 480 if you want to view your video horizantel or 480 x 800 which is vertical ( which I don't prefer ) After all that, your video should be small but at a good quality and allowing you to have free space on your Micro SD card, and it should be playing on WMP on your phone.

Hello there guys!
Today I'm gonna share my encoding settings that I think are the best for movie/tv-show/anime watching on ideos x5(pro/non-pro) screen.
Note: Encoding is a very heavy task for a computer. Make sure that you computer has at least 2 CPU cores and 2 gb of RAM before proceeding.
For example I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (4 cores at 2,5 GHz),4gb RAM and Win7 x64. Re-enconding 20 minutes of anime/movie takes about 5 to 7 minutes. Output file size is about 160-180 MB.
Anyway.Let's get started!

1) Download a program called HandBrake. You can get it here:http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Note: If you have 64bit OS get the 64bit version of the program,as this will greatly speed up the encoding progress.
2) Install HandBrake(hope you know how to do it ).
3) Run HandBrake
Note: In Windows in case it shows up an error when trying to run it, try running it as admin.
4) Find a movie/tv-show/anime file to re-encode + proper sub suitable for your needs
5) Take a break here and get ready for the hard part

1) Click the Source icon located in top left corner in HandBrake interface. Press select video file (I won't do a source->folder example since it's pretty much the same.)
Select your video file. Usually the extension of your video file will be something like .avi .mp4 .m4v .mkv etc.
2) Now in Output Settings (Preset: Normal) make sure that Container: is set to MP4 File
Now click the browse button located a little bit above and right and give a name and location to your output file
The hard part really starts here...
3) In Picture Tab set Anamorphic: to None
See how Width and Height changed and you can now edit their values?
Now change Width: to 800 and Height: to 480 (that's x5(all versions) screen resolution)
Make sure Keep Aspect Ratio is UN-CHECKED
4) Switch to Video tab (leave Video Filters Tab as is)
Set Video Codec: to MPEG-4 (FFmpeg)
Framerate (FPS): Same as source (leave as is)
Constant/Variable Framerate don't make a difference to me but feel free messing around with these options if you want to.I just leave the default one(variable) selected
Now in Quality select Avg Bitrate (kbps):
Enter a value here from 850 to 950. The higher the value the better. I use 920 which I find very good. The only difference here is that in dark scenes higer values will give a better image,where lower values (i.e. 850) will make the image look a little "pixelated-like". Increase it even further (i.e. 1000-1150) if you are not satisfied with the result in your phone's screen.
5) Switch to Audio Tab
Remove any audio tracks you don't want by selecting them from the drop down menu and pressing remove in order to save up space
Now select the audio track you want to keep.
Change Audio Codec to AAC (ffmpeg) (2nd dropdown menu)
Change Mixdown to Stereo (3rd dropdown menu)
Leave the rest as is
6) Switch to Subtitles Tab
If you don't want any sub simply remove any sub track like you removed the audio track previously.
If your video file includes a sub stream(usually .mkv files have one) that you want to use for sure,select it from the track list and check forced only, burned in(This will hardcode the sub into the image.You won't be able to remove the sub after that.If you don't want that,then just remove the check from this checkbox) and finally check default.
If your video file has no sub track/stream but you have a working .srt or .sub file then continue reading.
7) Chapters Tab is useful for some people. I just just un-tick create chapter markers.
In advanced I dont' enter anything
8) Switch back to picture tab and revise your settings (also do this in video,audio and subtitles tab).
Correct any mistakes.
When you are ready press the Start Button located next to the Source Button you used to load your movie.
Encoding should start. Your pc may stop responding fast during re-encoding of your video file.That's normal. Just wait for it to finish.
After encoding finished test your re-encoded video in your computer to test if it is as you want it (in terms of video/audio quality and subs). Well you can't tell much about the video quality by viewing the video in your computer because image will be stretched to fit computer's screen resolution.
9) Now copy your re-encoded video file to your phone's sd card.Better make a folder called movie or something. Paste the movie there. Place any additional .srt subs you may have here.
Download MX Player from PlayStore. Install it.
Open MX Player and load your video. Make sure HW Decoder is in use. Load any sub stream you may have.
10) Turn your phone into landscape view and Enjoy!

Guide is well written but why re-encode?
The only reason in my opinion is the free space, since our phone can play standard definition (didn't try HD) videos with srt subtitles (software decoded). If it is a space problem go with a bigger SD card re-encoding will cost in time...
Also keep in mind that any re-encode from a lossy codec to a lossy codec will cause loss of quality (even when re-encoding at the same bitrate/specs)

By re-encoding to a lower resolution it may use less cpu power to decode it, and therefore less battery (could be wrong though, this may not be that noticeable).
But yes, our phone can even play HD videos (they seem to have a low framerate on my phone, but I think it is related to a slow sd card).

Well to tell the truth I don't do it for the free space.
I watch a lot of anime but there all in .mkv format with softcoded subs at 720p resolution and a high bitrate (1200kbps avg).
Trust me you can't watch this even with hardware decoder.It's laggy. Of course software decoder served me quite well some times but that was for easier to handle videos(like standard avi files).
You are absolutely right saying that re-encoding costs in video quality and time,but I think it worths re-encoding in some special occasions you want to watch something somewhere else apart from your computer and u8800 specs fail to playback the video correctly. Also due to screen's size it's not very easy to spot quality drop ,but only in special scenes. The advantage of re-encoding to me is that I can use hw decoder no matter if I am in 2.3 or aurora and get proper video playback.If I don't re-encode usually I won't have a hw decoder option in 2.3 and in aurora playback will be laggy sometimes even with hw decoder.

I also think it uses less power but I didn't do any tests to proove it.
I don't think that slow hd playback is due to your sd card(I have a class 8 and still a lot of 720p videos shutter/lag a little).
