List of Apps to Remove when Rooted - Fascinate General

I am new to the Android OS, but would like to remove as much bloatware as possible one I've achieved that SU goodness.
Things like:
VZNavigator
VZRingtone
VZMusic
VZVideo
Verizon Backup Assitant
BING
TW.Launcher
Need for Speed
Tetris
etc...
Can anyone contribute to a definitive list of apps that are safe to remove from the Fascinate, once rooted?
(Also, how can I remove the VZ-related bookmarks from the Browser app?)

Not sure if this is related or not, but I removed the mobile hot spot app or whatever it was called using Titanium Backup uninstall and now the Wifi cannot scan and will not stay on or work at all.

I have removed nfs, vzvideo, vztones, vzmusic, and backup assistant and so far everything seems fine

I also have root with the help of this forum ....
QUESTION: .... do you have a backup / recovery bootloader like nandroid or clockwork mod installed (or are we waiting for these to be released) ?

We are waiting.

What I typically do is create a folder /system/app-del/ and rather than deleting, I will move the apps to that folder. If the phone freaks out or something, I can quickly use adb to move them back and reboot the phone if needed. I also usually will back up the folder to the SD card before making changes just to be safe. Luckily, we have the Fascinate dump which can help us restore original files if needed.
I use Root Explorer, adb or Titanium Backup to move/remove/freeze apps. Here is my current list of apps I removed:
Code:
$ ls /sdcard/backup/app-del/

Based on what I've read, I may add these apps back temporarily when the 2.2 OTA is pushed out to us just to be safe. I also like to remove apps that are available in the Market. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that once an app is updated via the Market, the old version in /system/app is ignored by the system and it goes off of the newer version in /data/app.

Nah. I'm not removing much. Removing too much can break some things, so I'm being very cautious as I really, really like this phone and it does everything very well so far. If I'm not sure which .apk is what (such as Amazon - I didn't know which one that was by looking at the files), I'll use Titanium Backup which will show me the app icon and name. Then I'll uninstall from there.

Here is a list of the files I removed, so far:
CityID_1.0.27_vzw.sch.i500_12118-release.apk ---- CityID
i500_411Search-debug_20100604_KST.apk ---- 411 Search
I500_MyVerizon_05202010.apk ---- My Verizon app to access your account
I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk ---- BING
i500_VCASTTones_QA_060310_1436.apk ----VCast junk
NFSSInstallerSamsungEmbed_1.1.64.apk ---- NFS game/demo
redding-7648-signed-zipped.apk ---- Kindle app
Skype_mobile.1.0.0.19.live.apk ---- Skype
VCastMusic.apk ---- VCast Music
VCastVideo.apk ---- VCast Video
VisualVoiceMail.apk ---- Voicemail icon for Verizon's VVM
vnav_4.7.0.258_i500_rel_PROD_signed.apk ---- Verizon's VZNav
TetrisInstallerSamsungEMBED.apk ---- Tetris game
Blockbuster_Stub_v0_2_build_12-unsigned-signed.apk ---- Blockbuster app
Final_Schi500_3.0.3.3_07262010.apk ---- MobileIM

To be clear, when the word "Removed" is used, it's as in "renamed" or "deleted". You've not actually uninstalled the apps, right?

what I do is copy that file to the /sdcard location so I have a backup. Then the next thing I do is "rm FILENAME" so it deletes. At the end of everything I execute "sync"

What do you mean by "wipe it?" What exactly is "it?" I've removed it and my phone is working fine. If I could possibly be screwed in some way, id like to know how.

I've heard the sgs phones do not respond to well to removing touchwiz so I would leave that I read someone saying "I know you're very tempted to remove touchwiz but DO NOT DO IT" this was on I believe either the captivate or the vibrant not sure but I would advise just to get a 3rd party launcher and leave touchwiz alone.
my question is I performed a backup then uninstalled thru Titanium Backup, is there a way I can like copy/paste all those Verizon garbage programs (lol) into a file on my sd card for an unforeseen situation down the road to where I can just re-install them if needed
Can someone possibly post some of the removed apk's I ran into a situation which some may also run into.... I by defualt only had 1 backup allowed therefore when i individually backed up all the apk's I didnt want then un-installed, then performed a full backup it over-wrote my previous backup to the current full backup....!!!!
I read somewhere that you shouldnt un-install "back-up assistant" or the phone wont boot?? is this true? if so that was one of the apk's in my initial un-install that i can not restore!

If someone can possibly post some verizon apk's that i can just save to my sd card that would be awesome
the following apk's are:
Kindle
Blockbuster
411 Search
NFS Shift
Tetris
InnoPath ActiveCare
Bing
VCast Videos
VCast Music
Backup Assistant
Desk Cradle
3G Mobile Hotspot
Write & Go
Buddies now
Daily Briefing
ThinkFree Office
MobileIM
VZ Navigator
VCast Tones

sorry for the above lengthy list...

Wait, so what does removing TouchWiz do? Take you back Android 2.1 vanilla?

no, probably potentially brick it because at the moment theres no recovery or custom roms to fall back on and touchwiz is still the main launcher

what does one do if they have already deleted backup assistant? :/

You can pull the files from the Fascinate system dump. Put them on your SD card for archival purposes or use a file manager to put them back.

where is that at?

[Q] Cannot unfreeze all apps frozen by TB

I froze a bunch of apps using Titanium Backup. They're not showing up in the defrost batch list. Even after factory resetting my phone they're not in the apps list but I still seem them in /system/app
For example:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 79497 Feb 5 01:21 SoundRecorder.apk
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27496 Feb 5 01:21 SoundRecorder.odex
But SoundRecorder doesn't show up in my app list. If I try to "run" it from something like Super Manager I am told it's not installed.
Any way to fix this?

Hello mate. I got my Blade V from the virgin shop. I am already a virgin media customer so I got the phone for £81.99 and they gave me a free PAYG sim card and £10 top up. I will sell the top up for 7 pound so I get the phone for £75 which is a damn good price.
Very impressed with the phone. It is not as sleek as the galaxy s4 mini or htc 1 but for the price it is 110% worth it.
Hy is any chance to unroot LGL3E430 with this tool
Here's the tutorial that works for XT910.

I have root. I'm on version 13.3.1.0 on my 7" HDX. If you follow the tutorial it should work. (It did for me) What version are you running?
Says 13.3.0.2_user_302075320. Installed on Monday Jul, 29th, 2013 5:01 PM
Just got the tablet today and have not updated anything at all. My tablet cant check for updates since before I turned it on I blacklisted the IP addresses from my router that Amazon uses to push updates to Kindles
Hurry, update to 13.3.1.0 before a newer update comes (or download the update here and for directions to manually install the update). Don't blacklist those IP's until you root it. Update first.
Once you get root you can configure iptables on the tablet to blacklist it but im testing this. I got root 2 hours ago. Once I get it working I'll post a tut.
But you need to be on version 13.3.1.0
Alright I am downloading it now on the tablet, but it seems to be taking a while so I doubt I will get a chance to try for root again tonight.

That's fine. It's a over 700mb. I will be downloading it too, for a backup if Amazon decides to take it down. Good luck!

1: Download Minimal ADB and Fastboot and install it. here
2: Get the adb drivers and install. here
3: Download latest Busybox to your HDX and install it. (It will not run untill you have root, this is for later.)(I got it from 1mobile market here)
4: Download jcase/fi01 code here
5: Download Moronig redone code http://goo.gl/4gBmq5
6: Enable adb on the Kindle
7: Connect Kindle to computer
8: Goto Device Manager in Control Panel
9: Look for the unsupported adb device (if not found safely remove hardware the kindle on the taskbar)
10: Click the unsupported device and click update driver then point it to the android_winusb file in the driver install directory
11: Unpack the files, rename Moroning's file to exploit and copy to the Minimal ADB and Fastboot install base directory, copy jcase's code EXCEPT the exploit file there as well.
12: Run Minimal ADB and Fastboot, make sure your device is connect first
Code:
adb devices
If not listed go back to step 6
13: Copy and paste this into the cmd prompt. Ignore if it says it fails
Code:
adb push su /data/local/tmp/
adb push rootme.sh /data/local/tmp/
adb push exploit /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rootme.sh
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/exploit
adb shell /data/local/tmp/exploit -c "/data/local/tmp/rootme.sh"
At this point you should be rooted. You can now finish installing Busybox on your HDX. To check if you have root if your unsure type
Code:
adb shell
then type
Code:
su
If not, reply. Remember this is tested to work on my Kindle Fire HDX 7" 13.3.1.0
Notes:
If the Hdx is updated past this point Amazon may patch the exploit and so you loose root.
We need to start a thread on how to stop/block Amazon from pushing updates to the HDX.

If you don't install a superuser app, root will still work, but any app that requests it, gets it, and no notification.
Supersu works with that binary, but you can install superuser and let it update the su binary and it will work as well.

If you don't install a superuser app, root will still work, but any app that requests it, gets it, and no notification.
Supersu works with that binary, but you can install superuser and let it update the su binary and it will work as well.

I'm posting that soon(to this thread). I do not have one so I can't confirm it works. Check back here shortly.
-Update I have it posted on the main thread.
Questions about Amazon updates
Has anyone tried to see if you can block the OTA updates like the kindle fire hd.
Using ES File Explorer app, navigate to the /system/etc/security folder. Rename or move the otacerts.zip file.

Thanks For the Root it works Great

I'll try it out.
-UPDATE- I can't confirm if it works or not. Someone else needs to try this up to see if it stops updates.
I'm running iptables.
This worked for me once I updated to 13.3.1. Guess the bug is either not present in the older kernel or it is at a different memory address.

Yah. I think that's what lead someone to port the 8.9" 14.3.1 hdx exploit to 7" 13.3.1

How to root the Amazon FireTV

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 02/03/2015
This guide I posted is well out of date, there are other methods to follow now days.
Please use http://www.aftvnews.com/tag/guide/ as it is up to date and current.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Geohot, we now have root access
1. A) Go to: http://towelroot.com/ and click the red button to download the APK:
or
1. B) Download from this MediaFire mirror I made: http://goo.gl/DQ6xXF
2. Download the Chainfire SU APK from the Playstore: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=eu.chainfire.supersu
3. Sideload both APKs.
4. Run Towelroot, hit "Make it Ra1n" and then your FTV will reboot.
5. After reboot install SU and set default access to "Grant" in it's settings.
Setup SSH after SU install:
1. Download Busybox APK: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=stericson.busybox
2. Download SSH Daemon APK: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=web.oss.sshsftpDaemon
3. Sideload both APKs.
4. Configure SSH Daemon to your liking and to start on boot
5. SSH with username root and password abc123 (configurable in SSH Daemon)
How to disable the FireTV Updater :
1. Connect via ADB and type "su" (without quotes)
2. pm disable com.amazon.dcp
3. If done correctly it should say "Package com.amazon.dcp new state: disabled".
OR
1. Just disable the OTA portion (Thanks JPDeckers)
Code:
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAUpdateMessageHandler"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAService"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.CheckForOTAUpdatesService"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAStatusActivity"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.ResetOTAMessageHandler"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAService$OTAWakeupReceiver"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAService$OTADedupeReceiver"
pm disable "com.amazon.dcp/.ota.OTAService$OTAInstallNowReceiver"
2. If done correctly it should say "Package xxx.xxxxxx.xxx new state: disabled".

Yep.
FYI, you should probably link to the main site instead of deeplinking the APK, same goes for SuperSU, the official download can be found here: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
People can just pull the superuser.apk from the zip file.
Worked for me. Quick and easy.
Now what do I do with it? Can I install Google play now?

i was thinking root wait waiting till amazon releases the new update to thwart any last minute attempt for amazon to 'fix' it...
is this safe or like the other exploit?
The towel root link does not allow hotlinking,so you should just change it to the DOT com webpage.
Also, click the red-ish symbol on their page to download the tr apk.

Hi! I'm still a beginer, so .. can you explain how to change it to the DOT com webpage?
Thanks

Was DP for more attention.
How do we add the OTA links to Fire TV's HOSTS file for blocking the update?
Also, how do I ensure that root is working without having to install another app?
Edit:
I was talking about the OP with towelroot.
*Piccard facepalm*
By DOT com,I meant just the website by itself, and not linking to the apk directly.
I also now know root is working because seeder was granted lag reduction access.
Added some more info.
Hopefully now we will see in influx of custom launchers, removable of bloatware, overclock etc Today is a good day :highfive:
Amazing! I've been waiting for this.
Anywhere besides ebay where a Canadian can pick this up?
can edit that host file with your instructions

SSH to your device then run the following:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system /system
chmod +w /etc/hosts
vi /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com
127.0.0.1 amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
:wq!
mount -o ro,remount /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system /system
reboot
This step can also be done through a gui, root browser lite or other such.[/QUOTE]
Editing hosts for me failed at chmod. Instead I side loaded root browser and modified the hosts file directly on the Fire TV.
Someone else posted in another thread that this will disable the FireTV updater:
Code:
su
pm disable com.amazon.dcp
I checked the amz site after undoing OpenDNS and setting my two router DNS' to Google's two servers.
After two attempts of loading my google bookmark,it errored on one and worked on two,so internet is fine.
I tried loading the amz page and it gave me an error instead of file not found, which must mean it worked from the hosts file!
I also did that adb shell function through terminal app directly on Fire TV as an extra measure.
Landmark!
We have root. Brilliant.
Next, Safestrap? Rom Slots? Stripped AOSP Rom?
We're on our way.

Anybody willing to try the Amazon Kindle*versions?

FYI, to install APKs directly from your Fire TV without the sideloading nonsense, grab a SQLite editor and meander your way through Settings Storage/Settings/Global to change the value of "install_non_market_apps" from 0 to 1.

WP 10 - Android 4.4 inside

Well, after digging a little inside the new feature of running android applications on Windows 10 mobile, i've found something very, very interesting:
WP10 is running what it seems to be a reduced android 4.4 version inside.
C:\wmconnect\platform-tools>adb shell grep ro.build.version.sdk= /system/build.prop
ro.build.version.sdk=19
Sdk 19 is Android 4.4
Also it's not using dalvik, it's using ART:
[email protected]:/system/lib $ ls libar*
ls libar*
-rw-r--r-- root root 1013644 1969-12-31 21:00 libart-compiler.so
-rw-r--r-- root root 2166912 1969-12-31 21:00 libart.so
[email protected]:/system/lib $
The kernel seems to be a modified MS version, i can't find too much related but one thing is for sure, MS should release sources as it is Linux:
cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.4.0-Microsoft ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.7 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 31 14:42:53 PST 2014
[email protected]:/ $
So far i've found a couple of apk's which seems to be the ones which interfaces android with WP10:
[email protected]:/system/app $ ls mic*
ls mic*
-rw-r--r-- root root 116078 1969-12-31 21:00 microsoftappservices.apk
-rw-r--r-- root root 300688 1969-12-31 21:00 microsoftappservices.odex
-rw-r--r-- root root 53633 1969-12-31 21:00 microsoftsystemserverapp.apk
-rw-r--r-- root root 76648 1969-12-31 21:00 microsoftsystemserverapp.odex
[email protected]:/system/app $
Attached are the deodexed files for the MS applications, still working on decompiling them, way rusted with smali
Let's the game begin..
EDIT:
Another weird thing, it appears that androids runs on an hyper-v machine ?
[email protected]:/ $ ls init.hyper*
ls init.hyper*
-rwxr-x--- root shell 1725 1969-12-31 21:00 init.hyperv.rc
[email protected]:/ $
If that is true, then we are talking about another potential feature, mobile virtualization.
EDIT2:
Another interesting thing SELinux is enabled, so is not going to be easy to modify files, we need to edit the security policies...
EDIT3:
Just got an update: build: 10512
aow.wim file located at: c:\windows\system32\aow\aow.wim
file uploaded to Mega
there is any way to hack this feature to accept google services? and how to explore these folders that you found?
we need to create a swap partition, cos with ES file explorer i can only access virtual storage, yes, it is 100% virtual machined, but we need a swap partition
We should be able to Install some system apps like gapps to make Google apps work with Windows 10...
I was just wondering if we can easily access /system/ and add files there... With interop unlock we should be able to access it but who knows?

maybe yes .
did you see leaked W10 Roms for L640xl and etc. ?
they are about 2.5 GB it's a real huge ffu image and it's about 1 GB larger than 8.1 ROMs so it maybe contains much much more for example as you said maybe include an IOS subsystem
but it's really interesting to see Hyper-V mobile version working on w10 mobile !

Nope . it doesn't make any problem to windows store in mobile and also in PC .
why ? you can't use download managers , Players and etc. why ? because they don't have access to your files
OK you can for example move your song files into the android subsystem directory to use android players . that's right . but android apps aren't able to run in background .
they are very very very limited .
project Astoria will port android apps to windows phone format apps not running them in apk format .
running apk apps only good for using some games and apps . as you can see it's a developer mode option so it's not user option .
it will help developers to check witch functions of their apps are working correctly .
hope you got what I mean .

I've tested some apps and they run in background (ex. Alarm clock plus) seems like the MS apk's that came with the Android system interfaces with WP10.
On a side note, seems like the system does not behave the same on all devices, i have a Lumia 920.
Cheers.
