EVO 4G & Epic 4G Hanging out SIDE BY SIDE - Epic 4G General

For some side my side images of the Epic4G and the EVO 4G check out my post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779123

So do we then get to post about how great the EPIC is compared to EVO? lol...
just kidding
I love the way people defend their purchase. Why can't people figure out the phrase
"Different Strokes for Different Folks"
There is a reason there is an EVO and there is a reason there is an EPIC.

Well said!

I agree with you 100%. Like I said before they are both high end devices and one would not really trade one for the other. Uses are quit content with their high end device.
BTW : the reason why I posted it on the evo forum is because I got an Evo. I def.ly was gonna post it twice because like u said users will defend what they got. Just didn't see the reason to post it twice when I could share the link and ones can comment, but I might as well include the images on the epic forum so epic uses can have their say, lol.

I had 2 Epics. The first one had none working capacitive buttons. The screen was AMAZING but I developed image retention or drooping. The GPS din't work and the slider was not flat so the phone clicked when you touched the screen. I ended up going back to an Evo but I really do miss the Epic. Samsung is developing a really bad reputation anymore. I also really liked the native divx support. I could just copy a full blooded .mkv at 720p and it would play perfectly. I miss that on my Evo.
I hope they fix the issues and maybe I could go back but right now I just needed something that worked....

The evo could play all files including divx and .mkv. just copy the file to your SD card and play it using yx player, works flawless..

Correct, but straight 720p plays at a few frames per second where as on the epic I could copy over a 720p bluray rip and it would play without problems.

Confirmed this last night on my EVO. It chokes on 720p mkv files in both yx player AND rock player. Both of them can play lower quality files though....

Is crappy 720p video a valid reason to exchange for new hardware?

I think we all have the crAppy 720p video. I am assuming the 004 devices have a better camera, and if so it sure seems like we might have a leg to stand on in claiming that we have defective devices. They may not have an argument since they even replaced something in the new model in regards to the camera.
I love this phone but, don't you feel scammed with how crappy the 720p video is? It's worse then the lessor setting.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I thought it only went up to 003? And I don't think that the camera is that bad after the update.
I thought my video was good too until I noticed there was a setting for video recording resolution and it wasn't set at 720p. So I changed it to 720p and now I see why it wasn't set there by deafult, it looks crappy, choppy, and garbled at times. Its almost unwathable. Nothing like buying a phone with a advertised sweet 720p video camera that no one will ever use on 720p because its almost unwatchable.

From what I understand the 004 devices don't have a better camera. HTC just added a second vendor to keep up with holiday demand. Iirc, Sprint will actually be selling 003 and 004 devices concurrently. The only difference will be the camera vendor. It's like they did w/ the screens...

I feel ya, I also would like a 004 evo, especially after today.
I literally got to my local Sprint store at about 2:45. I sat in my car to un-root my evo, which was running baked snack 1.9. I backed up via mybackup, did a nand-backup, downloaded the unroot files (via tethering! Took SOO long!) and put the stock 8gb card in, pre-formatted. This process took 2 hours! Then, I finally had a non-rooted evo, went in the store, and told them about my powerline crack problem. I was told I had to wait 1 to 1.5 hours.
So I looked around at the phones for 30-45 minutes, got bored, and sat there for an hour or so....
finally, around 6:30, the manager (or at least he seemed like it) was free and I asked him if my phone was done. He scanned my receipt, went in the back, and came back with a huge smile, probably because he was thinking "this guy's been in here for 2 hours now, at least he gets a new phone!" (he kept looking at me weirdly during the 2 hours. I guess most people leave the store)
So I got another 003 evo(nova), had an 003 Epson that had a powerline crack (which I neglected to get replaced for a month now), and I just rooted and re-flashed bs 1.9.
If only all that waiting would've gotten me a 004 evo...
I could always make an asurion claim, keep my replacement evo I got today as a PDA!
(I keed, I keed!)
I don't see anything better with the new versions... just new hardware to keep up with demand

Honestly I was hoping somone would tell me that I can fix the video on mine with software or a tweak.also it looks inconclusive on weather video looks any better on 004. I really don't want another phone. I Like mine, except for the video.

I got a class 6 card, and it fixed the choppiness and freezing.
The newer camera will probably be worse if anything. The new provider was probably a second choice, plus with HTC's history with cameras and swapping components..
so, your 720P video looks as smooth as wvga? and it looks sharper too?
maybe might micro sd card is bad. i ran a speed test on it and it said it was a class 2 but it wrote at 3MBps, i think.
i upgraded my card from the stock 8GB to a 16GB class 2. maybe i'll experiment with my older cards.

There is concern that the new hw revision will fragment the otas as well as hinder rom cooking. Currently 004 devices run a different kernel and are at 3.30.something new today. Meanwhile 003 devices are (supposed to be) at 3.29.whatever

Yes, I believe they're backwards compatible, but 003 evos have had issues with 3.30 from what I've surmised. Personally the 3.30 kernel killed pdanet.

Well, does anyone that has HW 0004 have the same stuttering/pixelation issues?
I'm trying to troubleshoot my severe issues @ 720p recording.. I have HW 0003, root performed, and setcpu installed, still on stock rom.. and have replaced the class 2 card with an 8GB class 6 that has consistently gotten 11.4 to 12.2 write speeds via crystal disk mark (external-dont really believe it) and 5.7-8.5 via SD Tools (internal).. ran chkdsk on it and it was fine..
I'm totally stumped here.. was thinking about getting a class 10, but there's possibly no need except for added size..
Again, does anyone that has HW 0004 have the same stuttering/pixelation issues?
Again, the hardware version doesnt matter. If anything, the newest version will have a worse camera.
There is really nothing you can do about it. It's the crappy codec and bitrate that htc/android uses to record 720p. You will get about the same quality video by using the h264 codec at 800x480. Of course, the resolution wont be there, but its much smoother and less pixelated.

Returned my Xoom =[.

I returned my Xoom yesterday to Best Buy( No Re-Stocking Fee) in Prep for the iPad2.
Sadly, the ONLY reason i'm returning is because of Tegra2 and it's depressing ability for High Profile video.

Both my wife and I have the Xoom. And we rarely get force closes if at all. The video complaint I can kinda understand but:
A.) How many 1080p movies can you fit on a Xoom or any mobile device anyway
B.) I am super confident it will be taken care by a Dev or Google itself
I will never go back to ios. A screen full of icons is so 1990s

A) Very True. But, I should be able to easily fit 720P video and/or be able to get software that can decode for me correct? Having to convert manually will never be a solution in 2011 for me to play on a Tablet.
B) This is Theory.
I do want to multi-task I actually sold my iPad for the Xoom; because I have all Android phones*.
I love the screen full of iCons once customized. I think this is also opinion. I love BOTH Android and iOS. But "Honeycomb" just isn't ready for the public. And we don't know how long untill we get updated officially. I root my device's but don't like to really tweak to much. So, even if a XDA hack solution is available I and the common folk won't use it.
The Xoom is sexy and I F*(&*(& Miss it like HELL right now!!!
But, I remember how easy it was to just upload a dam 720P Starcraft2 video from YouTube downloader.
Quite funny as to why you actually went for Xoom in first place?
Just read 1 of the article & it actually sums up entire Tablet war....
1)Various so called websites{Engadget--funded by Steve Restriction Jobs & others} complaints are glitches, battery life, and slowdowns. Yes, glitches and slowdowns are there. Do they ruin/hinder the experience at all? Heck no. People fail to realize that Android Honeycomb is a much more sophisticated interface than iOS. When you take into account everything Android does over iOS (widgets, customization, live wallpapers, true multitasking, better web browsing etc.), of course battery life and performance will take small hits. But in the grand scheme of things, Android has improved tenfold from Android 1.0 and performs amazingly well for everything it does. iOS is an app driven interface, which isn’t a bad thing, but the user has no freedom to customize the device to make it their own. The experience gets boring for someone who has used iDevices for a few years now. If you took a tech blogger’s iPad and compared it to a random 80-year old grandmother’s iPad, they would nearly look identical. But if you took my Xoom and compared it to anyone else’s in the world, I guarantee they would look completely different.
2)It isn’t fair to compare the performance of Android Honeycomb to iOS for previously stated reasons. I get a laugh when a tech journalist “compares” Android Honeycomb to iOS and says Honeycomb isn’t as fast and continues on to crown iOS/the iPad 2 like it’s perfect. Someone who reviews technology for a living should make it clear that Android has much more going on at any given time compared to iOS.
3)Another funny thing I see people say a lot is the Motorola Xoom/Android Honeycomb will never be as popular as the iPad 2/iOS. Uhh, okay? Why does it matter to YOU which one is more popular? Use both, see which one you like more, and go with it. Android Honeycomb will catch on and so will the Motorola Xoom. They aren’t aimed at the same audiences. Apple markets the iPad as this magical, cute, family friendly device while the Xoom is marketed as this totally bad ass, rugged machine that can turn into a spaceship if you try to grab it.
This guy has just summed up the entire Android 3.0 Honeycomb story.
iPad an oversized ipod Touch Tablet
I'm not a fanboy but can someone please explain to me why it's so difficult to play Video on this thing? Can someone also explain why the browser crashes? My device wasn't rooted but it would crash if it had to many tab's open and when I moved to quickly between them. Completely stock with only CNN tablet app installed.
What i'm saying is I paid 847$ for this. I expect it to just play the standard of HD Video. If it cannot handle this standard, you will have to decode the video specifically to this standard. Some as you see on the forums are still having this issue with certain solutions.
This iPad as a ex user didn't have these issues with video. So ofcourse the iPad2 will improve. BUT I feel the Xoom is better hardware so the problem is "how" long will the wait of fix be? I then see an Update that doesn't even list anything about Flash, SD Card Support, but a Time fix?

Personal Xoom versus Ipad

Well. have had my xoom for around a week.
Little frustrated with some of the non function, Flash is slow and no SD however. operation wise it does everything I throw at it. Happy. Anyway these aren't avail on the Ipad sooo what am I going to do.
My wife came home last night with a Ipad 2 3G.
First things. Grabbing it the perception is the xoom is smaller. Weight wise can't tell. Both feel equall from weight wise.
Screen on the Ipad is brighter but grainer than the xoom.
Powering on.
Hit the ipad power button, powers on shortly and insist it need to be connected to a computer, no bypass. Plug it in and it needs iTunes. What!
Install itunes and get it online.
Done. Strange, Ipad only needs to be connected for like 1 sec before it is activated. Sure this could have been done over Wireless.
UI feels more constrained than the Xoom. usage difference are mainly due to what I am used to. Ipad Keyboard is a pain, have to start changing all our passwords because mixed numbers is frustrating. Xoom is easier to type on, both numbers and also touch typing.
Speed. Ipad has very smooth transitions however task switching, navigation, apps etc are way faster on the xoom. Backwards and forwards, homescreen, etc. With honeycomb there is no competition.
First thing we tried to do was copy some photo's onto the Ipad. Copy them onto a SD card and use the adpater. Nup. Browse to out website, nup. In the end installed photosync and now working.
However my wife will love the Ipad as I love the Xoom.
This morning my 2 year old has already sussed out to open an audio book and is listening to the gruffilo story. That in itself might say something.
I get my xoom today, and play with it for 4-5 hours. Honestly, i saw a lot of force close in web browser/ market, flash 10.2 doesn't work...but i believe those issue will be fixed by update next version of honeycomb in near future. Of course, i love my xoom.

- when i say "work" i mean it has to work at least 90-95% in all cases. Flash 10.2 on honeycomb can't approach that rate. i tested a lot of website this afternoon, watched a lot of flash video on my xoom, and i can only hear the sound or extremely choppy. However, flash 10.2 on my mytouch 4g, galasy s, even hd2- running android is far better than that.
- There is no custom room right now so i don't think i need to enable sdcard function. BTW, 32GB is enough for me.

No it does not feel like a super mega anything up a hill. People that say that should get out from behind the capacitive screens more often. Google the actual weight difference. Its very close. I have a wifi xoom and my girl has a ipad2. My xoom feels more solid than her ipad2. And she hates it when I show her different home screen layouts or transfer something from my SD card. I've had my 3G Xoom since day 1. This is my One month and then some Review.
I've found the Flash usage on sites in terms of both video, audio and animation content to be pretty damn smooth.
Sadly certain sites refuse to work with the stock browser most notable Channel4.com/4od and tvcatchup.com.

Flash does work at least 90-95% of the time.. It may lag a bit if the site is flash heavy along with bunch of ads. But it gets better once you zoom on the flash video that you actually wanna watch. I pad can't do that. Also, my mytouch4g can't play any song on mixcrate.com, but my xoom can. So I wouldn't really say that my mytouch4g's flash is better than my xooms.

On the topic of the flash "issues". When I first got my xoom flash was sketchy at best. But once I rooted and blocked ads, I haven't had a problem.
P.s. having an sd card is great.

Planning on buying epic (Vs my old Evo)

Hey I am going to trade in my evo for an epic 4g. My evo has a crack and I do not really feel like fixing it or trading it in for another Evo, I like trying out new things when I am done with my old one.
My two questions about the Epic:
1. I take my video watching pretty seriously. I take the subway everyday and I spend that time reading rss feeds, reading comics/manga, and watching tv/movies/anime. Lately it seems no matter how hard a try, my evo doesn't like showing movies any more. Any video player I use just lags. I have tried avi and mp4. Especially when playing 720p video it justs lags, didn't do that before. How are people's experiences with video playback? Also the MAIN reason I am choosing the Epic over other Sprint devices is that I heard the Samsung Galaxy phones support mkv natively. Any anime geek would tell you that a large portion of anime being released is in mkv format. It would save me a lot of time if I could transfer them without transcoding. So does the Epic natively support mkv? How does it fare against 720p mkv playback?
2. I just watched a Youtube vid comparison of the Nexus S and the Epic from Phonearena. The video was made in December 2010 and at the time the Epic was still on 2.1. My Evo is on 2.2...I would hate to downgrade. Is there an official OTA for the Epic to go to 2.2...or even 2.3?
Any other comments on the phone?

Yeah there's an official 2.2 update (it's EC05) - 2.3 (latest is EE03) has been leaked from Sprint, and we're hoping that soon we'll get an official 2.3
I really love the phone, and am super happy I got it. My bro has the evo and (call me old school but) I'm happy I have the option to use a physical keyboard. I hardly ever use the touch keyboard - I find it too finicky.
1. The video playback is superb! The epic has better hardware so you won't experience any lag. Also the epic screen is beautiful. Much more color, and brightness. Your anime won't look like washed colors..
2. There is a leaked 2.3 out (June 20th official?). It's a hit or a miss. But there are 2.2 roms that are ridiculously fast, stable, and battery efficient. Check out the development section.

*someone correct me if I'm wrong*
Supposedly GB is going to enable GPU acceleration for our processors. I imagine that if there were ever any lag present while watching videos that it would remedy the issue. After rooting and adding a few tweaks the Epic does live up to its name. Out of the box I didn't find it to be anything special however. As a testament to the hardware our phones are actually able to run games that are specially tailored to the dual core Tegra phones.
When you get your phone turn off auto brightness and you can slide your finger along the status bar to manually control it which is a really nice feature. Saves a ton of battery as well.

Yes. The epic supports mkv natively. 720p mkv playback has worked nearly perfectly for any video I have tried.
My roomate had the evo. And I'm telling you the epic is much faster, and the screen is soooo much better the evo doesn't even compare. The picture is amasing better then the evo and all the droid phons

I watch a lot of fansubs and whatnot on my Epic. Yes, it does natively support MKVs. If your looking to watch them subbed, though, the default Samsung player will not playback softsubs. But thats easily remedied by other apps you can get from the market. Personally, I use an app called mVideoPlayer. It works awesomely.
I am starting to branch out with a friend of mine who has an Evo and studying some on ROM development and app development and since we do a lot of things side by side, I can confirm my Wifi Tether is twice as fast as his on his Evo. Anyone who wants something tested side by side against an Evo can PM me and I can probably make that happen

I never thought I'd say this, but I love watching video on a cell phone, thanks to the Epic. The screen and internal chips are awesome. HBO go, avi files, YouTube and flash (and Netflix some day officially I hope)--they all work great. This is a cinephile's phone, no doubt.

I'm going to have to agree. I enjoy watching videos of all kinds on my Epic. From MLB to Media Hub and now Netflix. I find myself willing on paying for content thanks to the Epic. I'm guessing its only going to get better when the galaxy s2 comes out.
Wow thanks for all of the feedback guys. I am so amped to get this new phone.
Lately everything has been sucking and I am trying remedy the problems. I am planning on upgrading my cf5770's to a gtx 580 as well. SO having that and the Epic would make me feel so much better.
I have not been able to watch ANYTHING on my Evo for the past few months. Also I cracked the screen but that was after the video lag stuff.
Thanks guys!

Movies/tv shows

A question for all. Is there any way to get movies/tv shows for the tab? Refering to either an app (buy the content) or legal website to purchace. Now im not talking about hulu or any subscription based program. The original tab had Media Hub and tha was great. Another option would be how to rip blue ray or dvd then transfer to tab but i know ripping software are expensive and i would need to buy external blue ray for my laptop to go that route not very economical. Sugestions would be welcomed as i really wast to take advantage of the screen. And what restrictions would i have to install the content on the externat sd card and what could i do in order for it the play. Thanks and hope i was clear on what i am looking for

decided to give itunes a try, i rented a movie and transfered to external sd and nothing, could not play using stock movie player. i downloaded 4 different movie players to try and play it and nothing, even though they all stated they could play the format. now the movie i rented was star trek and it was named as star trek.m4v and file format is video/mp4 as per the stock player. the demo movie that came with the tab is formated as video/mp4 as well only difference is that the name extension is .mp4. any suggestions as to why no movie player can access the movie? or is it because it came from itune?

I think all of the video stuff from iTunes is DRM protected... Not sure if the 7.7 supports DRM or not. Anyone know?

there is always free programs to rip and convert stuff you could do something like this for dvds.
edit: here is a more old school guide for the process just in case.
I pose a moral question. If you already own the material why not just save yourself a lot of time and hassle and download it? The end product is the same as if you rip the dvd and remove the protection then convert it to a more managable .mp4 or .mkv yourself.

Huh? I thought the big benefit of iTunes is to be DRM free, but maybe this is only with music…
btw: Try MX Player! It can play nearly everything for free and you can use hardware decoding.

Also, I am not your lawyer, but it's not strictly illegal to download things. Uploading is what gets people into trouble. That may change in the future, though.
I am using Amazon to rent/download videos for my Note, assume this should work for the 7.7 also.

Wish Amazon would just release an dedicated Android app already.

Yea i don't think there is a free way to rip bluerays anydvd is the only tool i have found to do it and it is like 100 bucks.
Anyway i personally used dvd decrypter for the first step so i dont know about the hd decoder program but after the dvd is on your hard drive handbrake should work the best.

i tried what you suggested but the quality is crap, it is very pixilated not smooth at all. i followed the all the instructions as per the guide but not happy at all with the result. what would you recomend i do or is there something i am missing?
EDIT: i think i found a solution, instead of encoding the file to mp4 i encoded it to mkv, i played back a sample on the tab and it is a lot better, its dvd quality (not great but it is better than nothing) but the process is estimated to take about 22 hours instead of the 40 mins or so if using mp4. :-/

So I was able to get a movie from amazon and download it to my laptop. The file was saved as a .wmv file, I tried to transfer it to the tab and it would not allow me to due to license restrictions ( I dont get it I already payed for it what else do I need ) it also mentioned to convert the file as an option. I tried using handbrake to convert it from .wmv to .mkv, it got to 2% convertion and then got an error message and handbrake stopped, tried it twice and same issue. So I have come to the conclusion that I should just give up because it is getting to complicated to get a simple movie to the tab.

I can't tell you what the best settings are but if the quality is not high enough you can change it to make it higher. If you are using the constant quality slider you can slide it up to 18 or 17 or even 16. If you are using a target file size and you are converting from a dvd you can use lets say 2048 MB and see if that is better. I would stay with an mp4. You can try each codec to see if you prefer one over the other. h.264 is supposed to be better but i guess the other one is a quicker encode i am not sure though.
Not sure if this is much help...but an app called 'remux' (for Mac OSX) copies video files into a new 'container (say mkv to mp4), but does not re-encode the video stream itself. So, would remux-ing the .m4v video file would remove the DRM, or is it embedded into the actual video stream? I've yet to try this myself having never used the iTunes store for getting video files.
Hmm, answered my own question--Googled 'remux m4v to mkv DRM' and found an ehow.com webpage that could that be helpful (Wow...that makes me look incredibly noob-ish, lol) So, hopefully this post is somewhat useful/relevant, and I'm using the correct forum etiquette (OK to reference other websites considering the DRM issue?). Regardless, enjoy those Samsung 7.7's. That AMOLED screen must rock for HD vids, etc.
