Trying to use Wifi Tether (google) app in rooted Vibrant (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=NexusOne)
Everything setup correct and works good on the phone itself. Laptop shows the connection as 'computer-to-computer' network rather than 'wireless network'. Although signal strengh is very good laptop just says "waiting for network..." and never connects. How to change Wifi Tether setting to show as 'wireless network' instead of 'computer-to-computer' network so that it will connect?
You should load the mobile AP patch instead. Works much better than the wifi tether app on the vibrant.

thanks for replying guys..i went to the mobile AP flash thread and read that you have to do clockwork recovery to flash it. I think when froyo update happens its gonna disable mobile AP flash?? I see people saying (and even Youtube videos) of using Wifi tether and Barnacle wifi legacy to tether from Vibrant. I tried both of them and they show as 'compter-to-computer' network on laptop and it wont connect.
You should delete everything & start from the beginning. If that doesn't work then try it on someone else laptop to see if that's the problem if not is your phone. Maybe is a problem the way u rooted your phone. If it continues doing it on the other laptop u are testing it. Most deff is your phone.
Froyo has wireless AP built in by default. We have yet to know if T-mobile will disable it. If they do, someone will just hack it back in.
Interesting. I prefer wireless tether. I think it works much better than the MobileAP.
So this turns out to be an issue with my laptop. Laptop is not able to connect to ad-hoc (computer to computer) wifi networks. Both wifi tethering app and Barnacle worked on a friends laptop. Got around 2 Mbps from T-mobile 3G.
I did have to update the driver for the wireless chip on one laptop to support ad-hoc networks, but it was worth it. If you're interested, check your wireless chip manufacturer's site for a newer driver.
The TMO sales-droids told me that the froyo update would enable the wireless hotspot (MobileAP), but who knows till we actually get it. Even if it does, if it works like the MobileAP does now, I'll continue using wireless-tether.

MobileAP didn't work for me. Win7 showed no internet activity.
Wireless Tether on the other hand worked perfectly, so YMMV.
Does anyone has a problem while using mobile AP while the connection is steady but after the screen dims or locks up the speed slows down and sometimes cut off the tether to the device? would there be anyway around this?

I have a question about tethering I'm trying to use the wifi for my gaming console (ps3). It doesn't recongize the ip address. So will it recongize it when the update comes or will it not work for gaming consoles.

maybe a dumb question but i rooted girl's vibrant and flashed mobileAP which worked great the first day. i couldnt get barnacle or google's wireless tether to actually connect to anything. But now she's trying to use it today and it won't connect due to DNS issues. Would it be the phone at fault or the laptop? I already tried refreshing the IP using command prompt but it didn't help.

Anyone having issues with the Wireless Tether app? Whenever I try using it, my phone keeps constantly dropping its 3g data connection. I also discovered that my WiFi connection on the phone itself kept dropping connections. Couldn't even stream a full minute on any YouTube video without it cutting out. Uninstalled Wireless Tether, and my WiFi has worked fine ever since.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Or, is there another wireless tether app I can try?

i use Barnacle (the Legacy version). It works great with my Fascinate. I had wireless tether at first but my mac would never locate the signal. Barnacle hasnt failed me yet.

Ditto.. before you spend too much time trying to get to the bottom of this, give Barnacle Legacy a shot.
I had a similar problem with both Wireless Tether and Barnacle Tether, but once I used Barnacle Legacy, I'm able to tether my iPad!
Wow, you guys are awesome! I've got Barnacle Legacy installed, and it works great! No degradation in wifi performance that I can see. Looks like it uses a different approach than Wireless Tether, which makes it more compatible across different phones.
Only downside I see at the moment is that it can only use WEP encryption, which was rendered obsolete ages ago. WPA support would be a big plus. I don't necessarily have anything to hide, just don't like to make myself an easy target.

Yes, I was using the latest version, which btw is listed as experimental on the website. I don't see a non-experimental one available. In any case, Barnacle is my friend for the time being.

Huh... I could never get my computer to connect to Barnacle. It's got full bars and I have Windows 7. I can't figure out how to make it work for me.
I've tried several versions of wireless tether, barnacle and barnacle legacy and it gives them all root access, but nothing with WiFi is able to successfully connect.
Remember that wireless tethering uses ad-hoc connections, not infrastructure, like your wireless router does. If your wireless devices don't play nice with ad-hoc connections, that could be your issue. Check to see if there are driver updates for the wireless card in your computer.

I'm running Vista on my laptop and can't get wireless tether to work with it. My laptop sees the network, tries to connect but wont. My wife's netbook running windows 7 however will connect no problem. Anyone have any ideas on this?

There is a good chance that Xbox live won't work with Barnacle since it uses an ad-hoc connection. I know the PS3 doesn't work with ad-hoc but not 100% sure on the Xbox.

All the updates are current, not sure about drivers. I am running pre11, but have tried 11 as well and get the same results, no connection to my laptop running Vista, connects just fine to the netbook running windows7.
The xbox sees the connection and connects to it, I just get NAT set to strict notice.

I had an problem connecting once, but realized that when i was doing some work with vpn's and ports i decided to disable adhoc on my personal wireless card.
To see if it may be disabled on your machine click on start menu, right click computer and go to manage, then click device manager, under network adapters find your wireless adapter and right click and go to properties. Now go to the advanced tab to see if there is anything in there that says adhoc and if it is possible to enable it....
Like I said, I managed to disable mine and all it took was a re-enable to get it back working correctly.
Good luck either way.
Mine works fine too...make sure you are running the latest version of Android Wifi Tether (pre9 - pre13 generally work)..also try running the Internet browser on the phone after you connect.
Also if you are not on Froyo there is the Mobile AP option for Infer-structure tethering.
Working here too. I'm using the SyndicateROM 1.02. It comes with wifi tethering pre11.
The steps I took:
1) Renamed my wifi SSID
2) Added a security key, 13 characters exactly
3) In Win7x64, I manually added the wifi and for the security key, I chose WEP and entered the key.
I could be on 3G or 4G and wifi tethering works without a hitch.

Does your laptop have an Intel card? I am unable to connect with my Intel 6200-based WiFi adapter on my Sony Z. It worked ONCE a while back, but updates seem to have messed this up rather permanently. Other machines that aren't based on Intel seem to work quite peachily.

I have been messing with my Adam for a bit. I have been trying to figure a way to tether the device. I know Android 2.3 supports Adhoc networks, but not 2.2.
Although the Adam's kernal seems to be much higher revision than 2.2, the device itself only seems to have native 2.2 config options, with an Adam skin. With that said, I cannot get the Adam to tether/connect to an adhoc network, no matter what I try.
I have a Sprint Touch Pro. I can get it to detect as a 3G Usb modem in windows, and it automatically detects as such when hooked into a linux machine, but sadly does not do anything in Android/The Adam. The adam will pair with it over BT, but will not connect to it, and will not even see it in wifi-tether mode.
Any ideas? Is this something fixable with a settings change? Rooting? An app (on the phone or the adam?)
Any/all help or insight is appreciated.

Assuming you want to tether to provide a more "mobile" internet connection:
Does your phone have some sort of WiFi tether app for it? If not you could attempt to run Android on your WinMo phone via Haret and then try installing a WiFi tether app and see if it works.
I would imagine to tether over USB Adam would need some type of drivers for mobile devices and that gets tricky. I would first try to tether Adam to a Windows or Linux computer with an Internet connection first, see if you can get that to work. Than go to your phone and try that. If it doesn't work from a computer it probably will not work from a phone.
If you want to tether for other purposes such as transferring files, SSH, SFTP, ADB, logcat, etc there are apps for those.

I'm trying to get in to modify the wpa_supplicant as mentioned, but I'm starting to think more and more the adam doesn't have superuser/root access like they've said, as all terminal apps I've tried have failed. Thanks for the heads up, though.

You would replace the supplicant file on XDAndroid, not on Adam. The supplicant is for the system running wifi tether acting as the hotspot.

Good luck with that. You're talking about reverse engineering drivers, recompiling kernels, and a lot of time spent for little gain and possibly no gain. It is almost always easier to attempt to get the wifi spewing device to act as an AP than it is to get something else to comprehend ad hoc networks. Besides, security is stronger with the former than the latter.
What about the XDA WiFi Tether from here. Is it any newer, is there an option for WPA? If not thats about all the help I can provide. You are probably going to have to go to XDAndroid forums and ask how to turn the phone into an AP or ask about WPA supplicant info.
Just remembered that some folks on XDA were trying to do the same thing with the Hero I think. They started some stuff and never finished, but did get WiFi Tether to support WPA which is a step in the right direction. You could hunt around the Hero CDMA dev forum and see if anything exists.

I get a "You are not authorised to read this forum" when I try to follow this link. However, I do see that the Notion Ink Hacks update includes Adhoc. Cool.
Tried that on my friend's Adam. It worked.
I can confirm that the NIH updates have enabled ad-hoc tethering, and it works great.

I was using WMWifiRouter, which resulted in the scenario identified above. I downloaded the HTC Wifi app that I found in one of the other XDA forums, installed it on my phone and created a hotspot with it and it worked fully. Apparently there is something different in the HTC implementation as compared to the WMWifiRouter app implementation that lets one work fully and the other only to allow a connection, but not access the internet.

I simply set my Nexus One as a WiFi Hotspot ... configure it with a SSID and WPA2 PSK security and a Password ... then turn on the WiFi on the Adam and enter the Passphrase. Away it goes. That is why I ordered a WiFi only model.
so with my minimal knowledge of phone stuffs ive kinda learned that when i run the wireless tether for root app on my phone it uses ad hoc to supply other computers with internet... basically im asking, will my evo be able to supply my xoom with internet?
Not at the moment, no support for Ad-Hoc networks in HC, not sure if there ever will be - very annoying.
I'm not sure but I believe there is a new version of Wireless Tether that will allow such a connection. When I first tried the Kindle connecting to my DX, it wouldn't connect. With the new version, it does.

My Xoom connects to my DX with no problems.
Go download Wireless Tether from the website. The experimental one is called Wifi Tether now. Works like a charm for infrastructure mode so that the Xoom can tether with your phone. Also Bluetooth seems to work fine as well.

No its not available in the market. Google wireless tether and look for wifi tether. The new app sends the signal via infrastructure mode. I think it applies to certain phone like Droid X and EVO.

The Wireless Tether app is ran on the host phone wanting to be turned into a wifi hotspot. There are certain phones that run in Ad-Hoc mode in default (aka Droid 1) and the only option to tether the Xoom to them is via bluetooth. As others have said, the new version "WiFi Tether" is apparently enabling infrastructure mode rather than Ad-hoc mode, something that the Xoom can actually connect to.
There is no app that you install on the Xoom. When the WiFi Tether is ran on the host device, the Xoom just connects to it as a WiFi router and works just fine (or bluetooth if thats what you're doing).
So OP, if you can't get the new version of WiFi tether to work for you and your Xoom, try the Bluetooth tethering option, it's been shown in detail in a thread here how to do it, and it should work just fine.

The app is for android, and for the host device not the Xoom, so you'll need to Bluetooth tether your iPhone.

I understand exactly what the OP is talking about, as i'm trying to do the same thing. What makes matters worse, is that ad-hoc connections ARE possible in android. Meaning android can connect to ad-hoc networks, but it requires swapping out the wpa_suppplicant file in system/bin with a modified one that doesn't filter out ad-hoc networks.
i've even tested this on my EVO, and it connects to other android phones incapable of broadcasting in infrastructure mode, it even connects to my ubuntu netbook broadcasting in ad-hoc...
(if you want to see what i'm talking, just search the forums for wpa_supplicant, something will turn up )
I've tried doing the same "fix" with my xoom, but it doesn't take. Using ADB or root explorer, i've replaced the orignal (making sure to save a copy just in case) and fixed permissions to 775, but it doesn't take. The wifi antenna will turn on, but it doesn't find anything once being replaced, not even saved networks or access points. I can get wifi back by restoring my backup, but i'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work on the xoom (3.0) but does with my evo (2.3).
as a side note, i'm using the right replacement for the wpa version returned by entering
"wpa_supplicant -v" in a terminal emulator or adb. It returns version v0.6.10 and there is a working, modified, v0.6.10 that should make things work, but doesn't....
anyway, if anyone has any input, i would love to hear it!
I am in the same boat. Regardless of whatever permission settings I have tried (mentioned in the dev forums that I can't yet post in), I still get a dead wifi with the new supplicant file.
Ah, I feel better now. It must have been the supplicant file, as I found this other one and it worked without permission modifications first time out.
You will have to google "xoom supplicant" and use the file found on the first response (android.net)-I can't post the link- the downside to attitude having, overlord type forums is inability for new users to provide any help, or at least with any convenience.
i try connecting my xoom to my computer, and it wouldn't work. i have the "Intel My Wifi Technology" but each time i set up a connection, the xoom finds it, but will take like a minute trying to connect and all i see on the xoom is "Obtaining IP address". it shows on my computer that a new device is connected. maybe this only works computer to computer. cuz i have had success with another laptop connecting to my computer with no problem.
I am using the Launchpad kernel and the WPASupplicant file and am connected to my phone's ad-Hoc network now. I used the beta Wi-Fi Tether and it worked great, but crashed my Samsung Galaxy S at least twice a day. So I installed the WPA file without setting any special permissions, just used Root Explorer to copy it an it worked fine.
Is there a way to connect on a ad-hoc hostet by a laptop (win7) yet?

It works like a charm! I'm running a WinMo Touch Pro 2 with WMWiFiRouter, and the Xoom now sees and properly connects to Ad Hoc networks. And, it still works with all other networks.
I don't know which way you prefer to attack the problem (from the Xoom or the phone), but I've been thrilled ever since I got all this done yesterday. Everything else on the Xoom is great, and now I've got the working SD card as well.

Is it right that you host a Wifi on your computer and tether internet to you tablet? I think its the usual problem android and ad-hoch, witch not work!
can it be done? I have the paid app, but it doesnt seem to be recognizing my droid x. Even when easy tether is activated.

if you have a rom that supports wifi hotspot you can u use that to tether to your transformer. I do it with my g2x all the time.

Easytether is for usb tethering. The OP is trying to tether from 1 Android device to another Android device with a usb cable not wifi. At this time it is not possible.

dont think so. wifi hotspot is the only way i know of.

No, I don't think so. I had one app which had to be installed on phone and tab and was able to tether over bluetooth but it was very very unstable and never worked longer than 10 seconds.

SGS (i9000) with darkyrom and build in wifi tether + tasker app for automatically switch on and off wifi tether when a specific bluetooth device is connected.
I use my tab in the car and when i start it, the bluetooth connection from phone to the hands-free is established and wifi tethering enabled with tasker automatically. this takes less power and has the full internet speed. works great for me!

No, I don't think so. I had one app which had to be installed on phone and tab and was able to tether over bluetooth but it was very very unstable and never worked longer than 10 seconds.

I think that is exactly what I am looking for. I want use TF with internet connection when there is no wifi around. So phone provide internet connection to TF. Understood true?
I teathered my TF to my friends Droid X thru bluetooth and I was able to surf the inet using his Verizon account.

You can tether over bluetooth (The instructions are around here somewhere)
I use PDA Net connected over bluetooth to my Droid Incredible. I have the paid for version, but the free version should work too. Paid version lets you get into https sites and VPN's. I don't use a lot now since through work I have a MiFi from AT&T, but sometimes I get into GSM deadspots where my CDMA (Verizon) phone works just fine.
