Fascinate gps is oficially useless - Fascinate General

Our worst nightmares have come true, the Fascinate GPS is as fcuked as it is on the other variants. Same behavior too - works for a time and then totally fails.

Ya. Thats pretty unfortunate.

Without GPS its useless for me

Well it works, but only for a day or two before you have to restart the phone, I've been having to do that on my Droid. But Im not making excuses, I've read that Samsung is going to have a fix shortly.

so much for hoping the Fascinate would ship with froyo but now i have to wait for this fix? how is it possible that the samsung epic had a fix?
Verizon better not be disabling gps in order for the to sell their agps VZ navigator crap

So it works as long as you reboot the phone from time to time?

Has anyone tried running the fascinate gps with VZ NAvigator?

So can u download google maps and use that? That may or may not be the dealbreaker for me, someone who knows please answer this question for me as i was planning on being the first one in the store on thursday and they are already holding one for me
Edit: i understand gps sucks, i still want to have google maps tho.

It comes with Google maps. Yes GPS doesn't work the best, but its good enough for me. Never not found me and directs me where to go. Yes could be better but its not useless. I use mine daily.

I've read the GPS problem is software based, something the way its calculating something is wrong, idk.. Samsung is saying they are going to fix it through a software patch, if that's the case, wouldn't rooting and installing stock Froyo or another ROM fix this issue?

iv been using the fascinate for a week now and yes the bing being the main search engine is annoying. and the bing maps does find me it usually takes 60sec or less. bt it does not give voice guided directions. i did install google maps and you can search fine and it finds you right away bt when you go to navigate option it will search and never come up just gives you the route turn list no voice guidance. bt playing with the phone if you go into the navigation app that installs with google maps and do your search in that and do the navigate it will do voice turn by turn. im pretty happy this is working. it still annoys me that bing is on the phone in the first place it belongs in the garbage.

I can wait for the GPS fix. Everything else about this phone is so amazing. Especially that GPU.

That's why i'm rooting the first chance I get. I'm going to remove all the bloatware that I can.

I will say, gpu is crazy, i played need for speed shift on the fascinate, OMG i thought my DX played it well, not even close. Case closed, this phone is sickness. Wish it didn't look like iDouche tho

Based on my examination of the system dump, your SUPL settings are still defaulted www.spirent-lcs.com. Change those to supl.google.com, port 7276, secure sockets off, turn AGPS on by changing mode to MS Based, and see how it works. There are further driver level improvements coming. On my Captivate, there is a significant increase in speed of locking and accuracy when going from JF6 to JH2, and that's not the final fix yet.

UPDATE NEVERMIND
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"

i'm not sure if this applies to everyone, but from what i've tested gps works perfectly in google maps. it shows my location to the accuracy of what corner of my work parking lot i'm standing in. however, if i use the test gps app, it shows no signal. very odd.

New Free GPS from amazegps

Hi Guys,
Thanks for lots of things on the website, I just got my mogul 2 days back and I am installing lots of app. One thing I really wanted was free GPS app. Now I liked msn live better then Google, specially as it was giving ding sound before turn. But I still wanted audibles. So, I downloaded nav4all. But it was pain in the xxx as it will only work some time. Even I kept google maps running in the back so it can lock but when I start nav4all app it will not lock. It only worked 2 times for 10 minutes.
So finally found following app and it worked like champ. I will give outdoor try tomorrow bit it was easy to install, good clear sound. Lots of setting and 2 different option to save bandwidth. I did not have to do anything to even lock on the satellite. It just worked. I tried some entering address and all that stuff and it worked great. I will let you all know more tomorrow after some test. Give it a shot as it is free.
http://www.amazegps.com
how did you get this to work i get an apply screen. i will look deeper into this im also using the mogul. thanks for exposing this app though
same
ive got the same screen
Did y'all follow instructions and write down the username and password they put up on the download page for Windows Mobile?
Apply Screen
Make sure to write down your user name & password, record it from the site download screen.
Pretty cool
Very cool, and it's free, but mine says it's Alpha version, and it looks like it does not have all the features it claims to have for other mobile devices. Also, for some reason, it does not show areal view (I am in Florida, USA). But I like the idead of hearing voice directions. I'll let you know later when I am on the road.

Hi Guys, I tried it today going to work and it worked really really good. I think UI is better then my Magellan. It shows POI's nearby and text is really clear. Route calculation was really quick. I am pretty much impressed. Now one problem is if you zoom fully and driving on the highway, it sometimes lags on refresh but if you are one level less zoom it works good. Man this is too good to be true but it works and the voice pretty loud. As this is just alpha version I think they should be able to improve it more.
This is too good to be true
I know it's alpha, but I have a few issues:
- US Maps are old - didn't have my area which is over four years old.
- Keep having to enter username/password each time I start - no way I'm going to remember that every time.
- doesn't remember settings (imperial vs. metric, etc.)
Anyone else having these issues?
Installed, ran...unimpressed
I don't really see the point for this app in the U.S. I don't know how LiveSearch and Google maps work in other countries....but this app gave zero new features...in fact, the aforementioned worked better.
In my humble opinion, US buyers, move on.

I don't know why you say that, it is not like you are paying anything for the app. It is free, gives you voice prompt. If you are like me who has unlimited data, you don't worry about updating maps as they will be always updated and it just works.
Also it has an no satellite option which will just give you direction arrows and voice prompt in which it will download map for the whole route so, even if you are going to the place where there is no data service available you will still able to navigate as long as you are on the course and as I said it worked much better then I expected.

No, I have to enter username only once and also I don't have to enter setting again. Seems like you have some write permission issue as it just to storing some values to say, don't need to enter password and other setting. I also have my favorites saved. I use it on HTC Mogul.
Just d\l it an looks good. Demo plotted course well but no audio. Tried WM5 and WM6 and sound is greyed out on the options menu. Anyone getting turn by turn audio?

I am getting turn by turn audio. I did not have to make any changes for that.
I tried this app about a week or so ago and it didn't work on my Mogul -- I just tried it again (downloaded the "now available" WM6 version) and it indeed works... Map coverage in my area is a bit weak, but I'm going to give the app a workout and see how it goes...
The price is right...
I tried this on my Mogul yesterday and it drove me absolutely insane! The maps for my area is seriously outdated and the navigation on the map is painfully annoying. Love the "Turn left at next intersection" voice though. Microsoft's Live Search is still my "free" GPS program of choice.

Thanks for the info. I only tried it in the demo mode and I'll take it on the road tomorrow to check it out. I may be one of the only ones, but I love Nav4All, also free, and doesn't need an active internet connection after the course is plotted so I figure I'll play around with this one over the weekend...
Good stuff considering it's free...but i prefer the tomtom over this any day! but then again in the free category this beats google and live only because it gives you turn by turn directions! In googlemaps u take the wrong turn, the course stays plotted but your blue dot goes awry! GoogleMaps doesn't even warn you that you've gone the wrong way!

Do you have a Radio ROM that has the GPS enabled? If you're Verizon, for example, you're going to need to flash a new ROM. There's plenty of discussion on how to do so here and on PPCGeeks.

UK users: Google Maps Navigation working?

Just seen this thread over in the Desire section - looks like Navigation is working in the UK now without needing to hack maps etc!
Quick test shows it appears to be working fine, haven't been out anywhere but it's giving locations, step by step directions etc!
Anyone else confirmed?
Holy cr*p it does seem to be doesn't it?
I'm stuck in work at the moment, but the navigation option has appeared and I can get it to launch. May have to go for a drive at lunch just to test it
Can anyone confirm it is working? I would LOVE to ditch Co-pilot.
I really hope it isn't an error on Google's part, which they are shortly going to correct and take it away again!?
Yeah, the option has appeared, I cant get a GPS signal tho as im stuck inside at work too.
Awesome update
It is working on my unrooted nexus one. It warns it is BETA version but who cares as Google always beta anyway. Version 4.1.1(#4156)
I did not even realise from the last update they had enabled it. No mention of it
How do i get to the turn bu tyrn navigation? When going to car home, navigation, then enter the end point, then i get some driving directions i can either see on a map, or as text, but i dont get that real turn på turn navigation, is there something you should activate or something like that?
Iam from Denmark btw, i wanted to test out if it maybe was opened to other parts of Europe aswell.
Exciting! Want to test it.

there should an option name "Navigate" just above the "directions". Ensure you have version 4.1.1

PS But thanks again to Brut for his hack that made it work on the old version of Google Maps..)
can confirm its working here too.
In UK with latest Cyanogen on N1.
Been using CoPilot so far which has been ok, but id like to see how google's fair.
This is very cool and it has been released by google quicker than I thought it would have been. I haven't used it for a long journey but compared to the hacked version it seems to tell you the instructions before the junction rather than after so good work google. This is some nice proof that google is working hard to improve nexus one. One other note is my version says htc passion and nexus one and it also has my locale as eng (uk).
Awesome, that's [brut] Maps and Nav Launcher gone from my phone.
Great work, Google!
Yup, working on mine too.
The voice search is superb, just tap the voice search button on the Google search bar, then say "Navigate to" followed by the destination...
Yay. That's the tomtom in the dustbin as soon as my car mount arrives.
Navigation looks really good.. street names too, which was a surprise.
if i try and use the google maps application i get force close every time it searches for directions it works if i use nav launcher though...anyone got any ideas?
im using latest cm with nextheme and avs kernel...
thanks

Didnt work in a building for me, I had to be outside. I also had trouble with the avoid traffic option. I have to say though that its really well done, works great, also love the voice input.
I like that you can even listen to the music on your storage card! The voice (whom I shall affectionately refer to as sugar lips from here on out) was a little drowned out by the music, but I probably wouldn't listen to it if I didn't know where I was going already.
I can't believe this.
Bing actually replaced Google Maps on my phone.
Tried on T-Mobile HD2 (US) ... very slow in finding your location. After that - very slow in recognizing voice input ... like 3 time slower then Google But it is alternative

No such problems with my HD2, updates location quickly. Also this is still marked as beta, hopefully any bugs will be fixed and more enhancements will be in the final version.
I've noticed that when I use the voice input, it does take some time, however it does seem to be very accurate when using voice input. The voice navigation does seem a bit distorted to me, anyone else have the same impression? Overall I'm really impressed still, and Bing has replaced Google maps for my phone as well!
Rerouting bug
I tried this on the way home yesterday and it worked great at first. At one point on the way home, it had told me to go a way that is actually longer for me, so when I made a different turn, it did a few "rerouting" calculations and came up with new routes. However, a few blocks later it tried rerouting again and I noticed my screen had locked. I unlocked it and found the bing app had just closed itself out.
Hopefully this is an isolated incident.
I posted the cab in the other HD2 thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679761
I should have posted it here since I am a TMOUS HD2 user.
I have also experienced the constant rerouting every time I stop. I think the app cant figure out which direction I am facing unless I am moving. Sometimes when I stop, the arrow reverses direction, then the app recalculates because I am facing the other way.
Plus I dont see any caching of maps. This causes map refreshing problems when the signal is lost, or drops from 3G to edge.
But it FREE!!
Used it today (downloaded early yesterday). It is the real deal. The voice is a little crusty at first but then it sounds a little more pleasing to the ear after a while. Now I hate I downloaded (aka BOUGHT) Copilot Live 8, could've saved the 29.99. All in all, the Bing nav as a FREE Nav is good to go and no more waiting on Googoo Nav to be ported to WinMo 6.5 for us.
Cheers for this one MS. (But only this one for now, you know how you do )
I can't even download it. DNS Errors up the ying-yang
Coming from a G1 and Google Navigation, I'd say the voice is better on this but Google Nav is waaayy better (3D view and the map rotates based on where you're headed). Other than that, the bing Nav is definitely usable.
I tried it twice... searching for restaurants using voice search and hitting navigate... it took about 5 secs to find my position and calculate the route which is good.
I took a wrong turn and the recalculation took less than 5 secs, so thats good too.
So overall its nice but the map on the phone is always pointing north so it'll be a bit confusing for noobs.

I am on TMOUS and this works great! Finally!
I did a search for my home address (inside my home) and then requested directions to this address and was told that the end address needed to be different than the start address.....seems to work great!
used it pretty much all day here in nyc.. Worked great. Even had it reroute me a few times on purpose... Did it fast with no real lag what so ever... Looks like they are gettin er done...

Turn by turn directions now available via Bing app

Just got the latest Bing app update and it now features turn by turn directions a la Google navigation on the Android platform. I am yet to try it but figured I woul
d atleast get the word out.
its about time!
I switched to android about 2 years ago and now I'm back to windows mobile and badly missing my Google navigation. Hopefully this is at least half the app that was, Ill be testing it over the next few days.
Do you know if there's any way to download the map files onto the phone? I don't have a data plan.
I have downloaded it and tried it and it works great... I am really impressed with this free app.

+1+++++++++++++
just finished installing this, and playing around for a little bit. i have to say this is pretty good so far
This is a great alternative to the commercial GPS software in preparation for WP7. Works well.
I was very surprised on the options availble in this app. Turn by turn navigation read outloud and voice activated searches.
This was announced in windows mobile apps a while back....the voice search (you speak) and the turn by turn navigation where it speaks is great but I regularly had issues on a recent trip to florida with the app just exiting with no warning...possibly due to not having access to data....seems to me they could at least buffer the whole trip using data at the BEGINNING so you can continue to navigate through deadspots but failing that have your program CONTINUE from where it left off when you restart it.
If it's not crashing for you then it's a very well done app and highly recommended.
Can we use this app without the data plan and can the map be downloaded to sd card?
Thank for the info
I actually find that Bing app kind of worthless. Upon start up, it just sits at Searching for location. So I exit out of that, go into maps, or directions, go to "locate me" and it just sits there and says locating, never doesn anything else. Maybe im missing something on the settings side of things???

Are you using GPS for it? Mine gets a lock about 5 seconds. Inside, it still seems to know my general location so I can at least do local searches.
I downloaded it about 5 days ago and it gives me the same crappy, incorrect directions that Google Maps does except the phone talks to me so it's definitely a keeper! Works with my bluetooth stereo headsets also.

Interesting...I had the opposite problem....mine would yell out "Rerouting" as I'm pulling into the parking lot of the destination.
They need to:
1) Give a beep when the program is exiting so you know it died.
2) Offer to resume from where you were when app is restarted
3) Cache entire trip at beginning so that area's of poor coverage would continue to work. Update this cache when rerouting.
4) Change "Prepare to turn Left/Right" to "Prepare to turn Left/right at XXX Street"
Not entirely impressed with it. For a free app, I think Waze is better, but Waze's performance depends heavily on whether there's other active Wazers in your area, and good area managers, so results may vary. Being an area manager for my local city does help a bit though

I used it yesterday in LA. It did a great job of not only getting me where I wanted to but rerouting me immediately at the 2 detours and 1 stop I made on the way. I'm warming up to it!
I found it very slow to update my position as I drove. Finally just deleted it. Google maps works much better, faster and stays locked to my position whereas bing would update slowly making the cursor jump constantly.
I do wish Google maps would add rerouting.
BTW, I see that Google Maps supports voice turn by turn with Android phones. My guess is it will eventually be available to WM phones too.
bing worked for me im in hawaii maybe it depends where you live? not sure but its a keeper for me better than copilot and telenav i miss google maps on my g1 but this is good for now and you cant beat the price

Anyone using Google's new buggy Navigation app?

The original Navigation (The blue arrow) app was awesome. It had live traffic updates and would re-route automatically and never dropped signal!
Now Google forced this new app on us, Navigation is no more but has now merged into Google Maps (it's a good thing but it's in beta)
Why the hell would I want to use a beta app?
BUGS ENCOUNTERED:
- If you manually press the power button to turn off the screen (whilst using the navigation), the route guidance will reset back to 'Select Destination' when you turn the screen back on!
That's so annoying and dangerous for me especially when you're on the motorway doing 70mph!!!
- Once you enter your destination and select 'Start' on the bottom right, there's a 50% chance the app will force the shutdown of the app.
This has happened often to me 50/50. Worst thing about it is, you can't just re-open the app or disable/enable GPS to fix this bug, you have to reboot your bloody phone!
- Map Orientation view messes up
Even though the original Navigation app had this bug, it was not as common as it is now. Also, there's a bigger delay in automated view change (when you turn direction, etc) This causes problems which forces you to zoom out of the route guide just to see ahead because the app is so stupidly slow to change direction at your pace.
- Stupid places of interest that you don't give a @~!* about!
Why can't I choose what I want to see on my map! I don't care about the best bars and shops in town when I'm on a mission!
Orientation bug is the worst and most annoying for me. Its never the constant behind the back POV... which is ANNOYING!
However, when I press the power button (while in navigation) so I can turn off the screen, and subsequently turn back on the screen, Maps FCs. Always. Once again, ANNOYING.
I felt like Google took 2 steps forward and 3 steps back with this one (while trying to hard to compete with Apple Maps).
Powering off the screen whilst navigating doesn't FC for me, but when I turn the screen back on, I have to click on maps to get navigation back, annoying

I did, I told them to give me back the old version and go beta test it on people who actually want to beta test it..
Remove new version and search for the old apk and don't update it .

That's very helpful feedback. They can take that right there and use it to improve the app. Not that stuff in the first post. That's useless information. Nope. The most useful information you can give them is a good whinge and a demand the old stuff back. Pfft, feedback, what's that?
Guys, it's this simple
Settings/application manager/maps/uninstall updates.......navigation comes back as separate app
So simple

But Slappy, do you really think someone who gave this as feedback on how to improve the app has the intelligence to know that?
Also the app will have passed Google's in house testing, they however don't have every single Android device, and every single stock and custom rom in existence therefore there could be device specific problems, have you asked people using other devices if they see the same problems?
After a large scale update most apps have teething problems, but they will fix them very soon.

That's how I did it. Then used Titanium backup to detach maps from the market. No more updates
