Turn 3g off and Edge on. - Captivate Android Development

I dont know if anyone noticed but you cant just turn edge on but here is the way you can.
How to turn off 3G on the Captivate
Enter the Phone app.
Dial *#*#197328640#*#*
Select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Select [8] PHONE CONTROL
Select [4] UE STATE CONTROL
If you want 2G, select:
[3] CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want 3G, select:
[2] CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA

I saw this on some other forum a week or so ago and have been meaning to repost it here, guess I don't have to now! Thanks this is very useful for me when I have terrible 3G service but really nice Edge, for some reason the Captivate will do 3G even if it is barely available.

I read that at&t insisted the captivate stay on 3G, can't remember the source though. Some of their decisions really gimped this phone if you don't root it.

now if someone could enable a script to turn off 3g and 2g on when phone goes to sleep

No, that disables data and re-enables it every 15 minutes, I don't want that.
Cyanogen roms have exactly a mod to do what I posted above; enable 2g, disable 3g on sleep - you still get notifications in when they arrive, not every 15 minutes.

Yep, with the Hybrid rom, there is an option to "Use only 2G networks", it works perfectly fine and it saves me a bunch of battery.

That menu seems to be part of ServiceMode.
I get to it entering *#0011#, then I navigate through it using the menu key.
Does anybody know an easier way to access this menu?. Using programs like Anycut or dg Quickcut doesn't work. All you get after creating a ServiceMode shortcut is a black screen and a application crash when you try to do anything in it.

I love you, its great!!!.
Now I can do it with a few clicks, no more dialing to access it!.
Thank you very much .

Alternate method
Here's an alternate method I puzzled out (and then afterward discovered it was already posted in thread 751237. It's a bit faster and has the advantage of surviving flight mode; still gets reset upon restart.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#*).
This brings up the Band selection menu which you can also access from the above method by dialing *#*#197328640#*#* then going into DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL.
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
To switch back, go to *#*#2263#*#* and select [1] AUTOMATIC > Select GSM &WCDMA All Bands > Menu key > END.
Something else I'm trying out is switching the acquisition order so when it is in "dual" mode, it'll try GSM first. Even so, it will still switch to 3g if there's enough signal. Seems to help keep it on 2G though, when it would otherwise cling to a faint 3g signal with 0-1 bars.
To do that, go into the NETWORK CONTROL menu (see above) then
Select [4] AQUISITION ORDER (yes they misspelled it)
Select [2] GSM->UMTS
Select "Select ACQ_ORDER_GSM_FIRST" (at least they abbreviated it correctly)
Menu key > END
This option does not get reset upon phone restart.

Samservmode
That's great, but with Samservmode you can do it without entering any codes. Its the app Mesasone posted some posts above. You should try it, its great and free to download from the market.

Yes, certainly convenient to have the app. Guess I should've been a bit more clear that the method I suggested is still different once you enter Service Mode, though. The OP's menu selections do the trick but get reset once you toggle flight mode. The steps I posted will keep 3g off even after toggling flight mode.
Depending on the user, that may or may not be more convenient.

I'm fairly certain that the reason at&t wants to force 3G only on this phone is because IMSI tracking via 2g/edge/GSM with the galaxy s is not possible. So if you had one of the old $10 dollar "dumbphone" unlimited data plans and stuck your SIM in a 3G disabled galaxy S they would have no way of telling and you would have cheap unlimited internet.
just saying

Found an easier way to enter this menu than keep remembering this sequence all the time.
Search for this app in market "SamServMode". This opens up this menu directly. Keep in mind, this is for Samsung Captivate, and should work for other variants of Galaxy S too. Not sure of other android phones.

Lol I love how you revived a thread for information that was already provided in it
Using the power of the force close

another option is Tayutama's i9000 ROM. I don't see the sleep option but the network option is there.

launcher pro alows you to creat shortcuts to all the service menus.... easier then anything listed above, if you use launcher pro

Disable GSM!!!!

My old device was htc wizard. There was an option to disable gsm (phone) only. Is there any way to do this in g1? I just want to avoid calls and in the same time to use wifi. Airplane mode doesn't work for me, because it disables wifi too

Not quite the way you are accustomed to it, but there is a 'way' around it... you basically leave the phone on but you can turn on call forwarding... settings > call settings > call forwarding > always.
It doesn't turn the phone off but it won't ring either.
--M
i was wondering the same thing, there might come out with a fix for this in the next update.
demontefixo, i was using the same solution, but I hoped for real solution to disable GSM. Anyway I will just wait
PS: This device is amazing I'm so happy with it. I wasn't using windows on my computer and laptop, and now i am completely MS free
Install anycut and Create a Software to Hidden Application named Phone Info, their you can see the Phone or Radio disable type of option. I have Tried it
It can actuall disable Radio and keep the Wifi on, But i could not renable radio and must have to reboot the phone.
Through the same Phone Info shortcut you can enable it to use WCDMA only or just prefer WCDMA or use GSM only. I think that is what mony87 was looking for.
Or you can go to:
Settings
Mobile networks
Operator selection
If you only see T-Mobile then Search Networks.
Select a non subscribed Network like ATT
It will tell you you your SIM card does not allow a connection...
But if you don't re-select TMobile the Phone Connection will turn off.
To get your Phone Connection back, just select TMobile

*#*#4636#*#*
Works fine for me.
Tho i do hope a app or a fix for this in any near update

Forcing HSDPA mode?

With every other android phone i had i could force the phone to use 3G only by going to *#*#4636#*# and selecting "WCDMA Only".
I can do the same on the SGS but it does not do anything. it has no effect on the phone.
Anyone has any idea how to do this on the SGS?
Yes..I am looking for the same information..Without this feature..i am screwed.the phone keep going to 2G as long as the signal strength is stronger than 3G..this priority scheme logic suck big time for data centric phone which data speed is more important..
DownlOad anycut, run it,NEW SHORTCUT - ACTIVITY - PHONE INFO
A short cut will now be on your homescreen with all the required options.

You don't need to type all that *#*#.........#*#* on your I9000, just hold the menu button down(which is the button in the middle of the bottom of the phone) and you will see an icon called service mode and this is the mode after you type all that out.

With the SIM card remove Dial *#2263# select WCDMA, select All, then bottom left haptic button select end and reboot with the SIM card in
I mean don't do the next step (Open dialer again.Dial *#2263# select automatic)
maybe this could be a project for the devs that allow us to simply enable and disable using radio buttons or something.
anyone know if it's possible?

Does it drain battery even if you are not in an LTE supplied area?

If you like you can rename the "Name" to whatever you like...I used "AT&T HSPA+"
Click "Save"
This will give you access to HSPA+ network only. I found this info online for the Galaxy SIII with ICS coming stock. This is an ICS only option I believe, I don't recall cause I dumped the Gingerbread 2.3.6 cause it was burning up batteries like crazy.
Please be advised I have the Galaxy SII Skyrocket, they are building the LTE network in my area as we speak and I was getting all sorts of interference from their testing and upgrades so until its complete I'm running HSPA+ only and the problems went away.
Hope this helps!

That might work. But it will not turn off the LTE radio, the phone will still have LTE on but will connect to the slower internet. LTE remains on=battery drain is on.

[Q] Disable Wifi Network Notifications?

Is there any way to turn off or disable all WiFi network notifications? I'm constantly clearing things about available open networks, and also when I connect to WiFi.
The only option I found is in the WiFi settings as "Notify Me - Tell me if Wi-Fi is available when I open an app", which I've turned off.

Which version do you have? On the Verizon version unchecking wifi notifications in settings doesn't get rid of the notification. It only gets rid of an extra irritating popup every time you open an app.
The only way I've found to get rid of the notification is to leave wifi turned off. Not sure if that's what Verizon intended to encourage me to do, but since I'm on unlimited data I'm guessing probably not. I won't feel too bad about staying off of wifi and eating up their data until they fix it though. There's no excuse for cluttering up the notification area with constant notifications about nothing, with no way to disable them.
edit - Oh I see. You have AT&T and they're more sensible about it than Verizon.
So, no answer to this on the Verizon phone?? I am hoping a custom ROM will fix this annoying issue. Yes, Verizon, I know I am connected to my wireless network. That thing drives me crazy!! As noted above I have also been leaving my wifi off and just using my Unlimited data. Max to date is 23 Gig in a month!! Eat it VZW!!

No one's offered an alternative through modding as far as I've seen. How about this, if it's not that hard, YOU fix it and hand over the mod. Not everyone wants a custom ROM with how well stock runs. They never work 100%. So give up IR (ect) for no Wi-Fi notification bug? No thank you. If it was easy as build.prop, would be done. Stop talking out of your ass batterystats.bin guy.

1) Be rooted
2) Install Notifications Off from Play Store (free)
3) Open Notifications Off, scroll down to LGSystemServer, and uncheck it
4) Save
VS980 wifi notifications gone!
Does that kill any other notifications or just the WIFI BS message? Thanks for the find.

4.3 on AT&T S4, Will we loose MOBILE DATA toggle in Notifications Panel?

I was looking at an AT&T Galaxy Note 3 last night as someone was asking some tricks to it. I told them if you turn off your mobile data thru the notification panel you can save a lot of battery loss, so i showed them how quickly they can do that on the S4. I looked at their Galaxy Note 3 and that MOBILE DATA toggle was missing from the page of icons for the Notification Panel.
This is a big one for me before i upgrade to AT&T's latest. I suppose no one knows now if we will see the same icon missing at this time. Just a heads up.

I did when I flashed a 4.3 rom, turning off mobile data was a key tool I use to monitor my phone I don't know why they'd take this step backwards but this was my solution. This app was a great discovery.

As I said, I dont think screenshot is from the North American version; International Note 3 has the toggle
Im gonna wait before updating to 4.3 anyway, it would be pretty stupid to remove it, makes no sense
I have tried two different ROMs based on leaks of MJ6 and both were missing the data toggle. I haven't tried any of the MJ5 versions.

I think saving battery by turning off mobile data will be an individual thing. I ran into issues on my previous Android phone by being too aggressive disabling mobile data with Juice Defender. I discovered that MMS was disabled unless mobile data was turned on, so if you do MMS, remembering to re-enable mobile data could be an inconvenience. And depending on the strength of the mobile data signal, your phone's radio may use more or less power to maintain the connection.
I find I have no battery issues just leaving most everything enabled on my GS4 (data, wifi, gps, gestures, etc.) I don't use many of the smart features, so I switch those off as well as nfc, sbeam and bluetooth.
thanks everyone. i decided to post this Q in the att forums as well . http://forums.att.com/t5/Android-Di...ll-it-be-missing-the-Mobile-Data/td-p/3761065

That is always an option on all android phones. The phone you were looking at just had the icon hidden. In the notifications panel there is a way to select which icons are shown.

I think what he is saying is that it looks like ATT may have had it removed. It is not in the 4.3 ATT leaked firmware for the i747 either, and NO option to choose it. So HOPEFULLY it is just due to a leak and not the full OFFICIAL firmware from ATT. Below are the ONLY choices to choose from on the S3 i747 leak. I have already tried the RESET and it is still not there. So it MAY be something ATT is taking out

Wonder what that reading mode does?
My mobile data button also went missing after the 4.3 update. Be that as it may, I wonder what world you guys live in that find a benefit to turning off mobile data? I find no benefit to doing that. Sure can't send MMS if MD is off. And I have yet to have any battery issues that would make me look for ways to stretch my battery life. OEM battery, stock ROM, Nova Prime launcher.
I turn the bg color from white to yellow

Reading mode changes the white to a more yellow color on apps it's enabled on when the toggle is turned on...you have to go to setting and select apps it effects.
As for the benefit...I like to use it when I'm running low on data...I have a 3gb plan but sadly that's not enough, I often get down to 100 mbs left so turning off data prevents background tasks from using up the last of my data...the main reason I eat up si much data is cause let is faster than any wifi I've ever been connected to...so more often than not I use lte instead of wifi

That, I can understand. But I was under the impression people were turning off data to save battery life, which doesn't make any sense to me (in my world).
I use my MD button to limit my data usage , not to save battery. .. I use that button more than Reading mode.

downgrade

I did when I flashed a 4.3 rom, turning off mobile data was a key tool I use to monitor my phone I don't know why they'd take this step backwards but this was my solution. This app was a great discovery.[/QUOTE]
thanks. I hate Samsung for this dam downgrade.
what's up with business lately, all their upgrades are actually downgrade. has the world spin backward?
How to turn data on/off
Good news is that even with the mobile data button gone from the notification panel, it is still possible to turn the mobile data on/off.
To enable/disable mobile data:
1) Click the gear (Settings)
2) Click "Data Usage"
3) Check/uncheck "Mobile data" box.
Clearly, AT&T wants us to use more data and pay them overage fees or upgrade to a more expensive data plan. That's a pretty cheap trick. With AT&T now offering lower monthly fees when you bring your own phone, my next phone will run stock Android.
